BY JEFF TUCKER RECORD STAFF WRITER

As promised, Chaves County commission candidate Eloy Ortega Jr. has loaned his campaign a sizeable chunk of money as the Democrat challenger has out-raised Republican incumbent James Duffey in recent weeks. Duffey still maintains a considerable advantage in fundraising, having raised $12,655 in his re-election

campaign, according to the latest campaign finance reports filed by the two candidates with the New Mexico Secretary of State’s office. Ortega had raised a total of $4,715 through Oct. 6, according to the reports published Monday. Duffey, thus far slow to spend his campaign funds, also had a tenfold advantage in available funds with less than a month to go before the Nov. 4 general

Roswell Police are seeking a man who is believed to have injured two other men in a drive-by shooting Saturday while the two victims were in front of one of their homes. Police were called to the scene in the 1400 block of West Tilden Street at 1:08 p.m., shortly after the shooting, said Todd Wildermuth, spokesman for the Roswell Police Department. An arrest warrant has been issued for Ezekiel Jamal War ner, 20, of Roswell. He is sought on multiple charges of aggravated assault, aggravated battery and shooting at or from a motor vehicle. Investigators gathered information that led them to believe a rifle may have been used in the shooting. One of the victims reported hearing two shots and

then running into the house where he realized he had been shot in the left ankle. The other victim was shot in the upper left leg. There was no one else near the victims or inside the house when the shooting occurred, police were told. Both victims were taken to a local hospital for treatment of their injuries. They are expected to recover. Warner, the suspect in the case, is about 5-foot, 7inches tall, weighs about 135 pounds and has black hair and brown eyes. Anyone with potential information regarding this case, including the whereabouts of Warner, is asked to call the Roswell Police Department at 624-6770 or Chaves County Crime Stoppers at 1-888-594TIPS(8477).

the residents. “We really shouldn’t have people afraid to speak to their police officers,” Clark said. Some of the training officers receive may be the problem, Clark said, especially when officers come into the police force from military careers. “Police officers aren’t soldiers, they have to have a dif ferent mindset,” Clark said. Clark cited the recent problems encountered by police departments in Ferguson, Missouri, and Albuquerque as examples of the problems he was discussing. He said that, in his opinion, police officers escalated potentially violent encounters more than they de-escalate situations. “Do you have any local examples?” City Councilor Caleb Grant asked. Clark said he had personally followed a police officer that was driving 40 in a 30 mph zone, and he had discussed the situation with a sergeant at the

American Legion Post No. 28 held an open house for the community from 5 to 7 p.m. on Friday. Following the open house, Homegrown Boyz from Ruidoso performed for a dance. Post Commander Jimmy Montoya said there was an “awesome” turnout that included members of the Roswell City Commission and a group who had traveled from Albuquerque. Montoya said the Roswell post was established in 1926, but has become almost dormant as many of its members, mostly World War I and World War II veterans, died off. He said that recently the post has been rejuvenated and the members want to reintroduce the veterans group to the community. He said the local post has plans for a “Trunk or Treat” at Halloween and a gift exchange at Christmas for local veterans who are in nursing homes. In no particular order are Jaime Fierro, second vice president; Robert Gibson, chaplain; Les McPherson; John Stites, honor guard; Bill White, secretary; Jimmy Montoya, post commander; Rosie Ginanni, friend of McPherson; and Felix Sosa, sergeant at arms. Resident asks police committee to consider review board on Monday A Roswell man wants the city to consider instituting civilian oversight of the police department. Resident Mike Clark asked the police committee on Monday to consider opening a discussion about establishing a review board for police policies and training. “Nationwide there is a trend toward the militarization of police, and there seems to be a mentality of fear on the part of officers, and we see this over-reaction in the instances of deadly force,” Clark said. “It seems that police officers are more worried about their safety than in helping the civilians, and that is instilling fear on the part of civilians.” Clark said he has the feeling that people are afraid to approach their police of ficers, who are there to serve and protect

police department. He also said he worked part time security at a local nightclub and saw examples of police brutality, although he could not say whether he had seen any city officers involved in the incidents at the nightclub. Councilor Savino Sanchez, chairman of the police committee, asked City Manager Larry Fry if the committee could take any action on Clark’s suggestion. “We’re not prepared to discuss this topic this mor ning,” Fry said. “We can let the chief have some time to prepare and we could discuss it at the next meeting.” Sanchez asked that the topic be put on the November agenda, for further discussion by the police committee. “In the past, when we have had meetings between the police chief and the See REVIEW, Page A3

Food Truck Throwdown planned for Nov. 8 Toddzilla’s to be featured on Food Channel BY RANDAL SEYLER RECORD CITY EDITOR

On Nov. 8, Roswell residents will get to “throw down” with a number of food trucks — including local favorite Chef Toddzilla’s Mobile Cuisine, which was recently filmed for an upcoming episode of “Pizza Masters.” “The food truck throwdown is 10 food trucks competing,” said Kerry Moore, owner of Chef Toddzilla’s Mobile Cuisine. So far there are two Roswell trucks and four Albuquerque trucks signed up for the competition. Moore was discussing the event at Monday’s meeting of the Chaves County Tourism Council. “We hope to attract trucks from Santa Fe or El Paso for the spots we have open,” Moore said. The chefs will be competing by cooking unique
