Students from the hip-hop dance workshop at the Thlanganisa culminating performance on Sunday March 10th.

MESSAGE FROM THE DIRECTOR Making Connections Through the Arts For five years running, the Thlanganisa Arts Festival has been one of AISM’s annual showcase events. Each year students from local city schools join AISM students for a weekend and participate in interactive workshops designed to make connections through artistic expression. The build-up to this year’s festival was nothing short of epic. To start with, a 10 th grade student served as the Event Coordinator, taking on the planning of Thlanganisa as her MYP Personal Project. Beatriz Martins and her supervisor, Colleen Fletcher, along with a brilliant group of volunteer parents and students put together an exciting program comprising workshops in clay sculpture, painting, artistic graffiti, hip-hop dance, story-telling, traditional African dance and drumming, physical theatre and choir. This was the first time professional artists from Mozambique, Portugal and France were invited to lead the workshops, adding a fresh perspective and a new level of expertise. We gratefully acknowledge Millenium BIM and the AISM PTA for their sponsorship of Thlanganisa 2013 and for helping us to provide “Mais Cultura Para Todos”! Congratulations and thanks to everyone who helped to make this year’s Thlanganisa Arts Festival a most memorable and successful event.

Primary School Message from the Principal I spent time talking with the Minster for Education in South Africa last week about building an educational community. Through this community, children, teachers and parents grow and continue their life-long journey of learning. Our primary school continues to offer all 3 constituents opportunities to learn and grow. In my opinion, the PYP is the perfect vehicle to drive collaborative learning further. It offers a twenty-first century opportunity without encompassing structures and barriers of the past. Every member has an occasion where their views are challenged and their thinking is changed. We are indeed fortunate to work with a programme that both accommodates and tests us, but more importantly, teaches us all about ‘we’ and not ‘I’.

By Kiran Nandi (world-renowned AISM 5th grade journalist, new from Canada) For the first time in AISM history, 5th graders were given the chance to join in on one of the high-schoolers’ Service Learning days. Ms Lin is very thankful that the 6th graders had the idea because it “prepares them for next year and plants the seed of compassion” as Mr Gabriel said. It was a great experience. Not only did we all enjoy it, we were learning and helping at the same time. One student (who went to the Warethwa Association project) said “it’s surprising that some people think they have nothing to learn from those less well-off than them. The kids I worked with showed a lot more caring than some in this school (no offense)”. A student named Ursula who went to the Deaf School agrees. “Service Learning is awesome! It’s very enjoyable (but not when it’s hot!) and we learned new things from each other. It was a good day.

How can U save our beach?? The Maputo beach is calling everyone to come and help clean up!

Help by going to the beach with friends, family and anyone else and go clean it up. With everyone working together and removing 2M bottles, glass and more POLLUTION, we can all make a difference over time. Make people more aware. Spread the word. Use an hour or so on the weekend or after work and school. The more help this beach can get, the sooner it will end up the way it used to be with clean sand and blue water. Help save our beach. One person makes all the difference. GRADE 5 PYP EXHIBITION At the end of Grade 5, students are expected to carry out an extended, collaborative inquiry project known as the Exhibition, under the guidance of their teachers. The Exhibition represents a significant event in the life of both the school and the student, synthesizing the essential elements of the programme and sharing them with the whole school community. It is an opportunity for students to demonstrate the attributes of the learner profile they have been developing throughout their engagement with the programme. It is a culminating experience marking the transition from the PYP to the Middle Years Programme (MYP). It is time for parents to: Support  Encourage  Ask questions  Listen  Provide assistance with access to resources  Let students be responsible for the work  Attend the celebration on May 9tH

Gabriel Limaverde Sue Lindsay-Rea Hand-washing

HEALTHWISE

Time has been spent with primary school students teaching them about hand-washing and the correct way to cough, as a first line of defense against the spread of germs. They have watched demonstrations on how to correctly wash their hands, with emphasis on the need to wash between their fingers and to soap for at least 20 seconds. The younger students were advised to wash for as long as it took to sing Happy Birthday. We also discussed when, and how frequently hands should be washed. They have been advised to wash their hands at least 6 times a day. The correct way to cough and sneeze was also discussed and they have all been encouraged to cough and sneeze into the inner elbow in order to reduce the spread of germs through droplet infection.

AISM Student Leadership Committee Mission Statement We commit to providing a communicative council that will remain open minded and active in and for the student body. We strive to create a positive, respectful and comfortable learning environment for students to engage in balanced student lives.

As we bid our seniors goodbye we would like to thank those who were part of the leadership committee for the last year. These leaders organised successful events such as The Hunger Games and movie nights as well as instigating change, not least of all the proposal for a cafeteria on the secondary school side. It was their enterprise and initiative in making proposals and meeting with food and catering specialists that finally resulted in the wonderful new space we have. Special thanks go the chairpersons of these committees: Natacha Fateally, Larissa Price, Pedro Barbosa, Laetitia Boon, Hunter Walton, Jabez Joshiraj, Michael Frade and Aarian Charania. Our new chairpersons and committee members will be introduced this week and we welcome them to their challenging roles. The leaders will participate in a full-day training session before the June break and later attend a leadership retreat weekend at the start of next year, where they will draw up their action plans for the year.

Charlie & The Chocolate Factory

A huge round of congratulations go to director Bob Maxfield, choreographer Jacquie Cullen and music director Carol Brandner, as well as the entire cast, band and crew of the spectacular Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, which opened at Teatro Avenida on February 28. With incredible costumes, set, music and lighting, the actors brought magic to the stage with their performances. Well done to one and all. Special thanks to Sandra Fonseca from Agência Golo and Yolanda Thomas from Buzz Design for the amazing costumes, and Spectum Graphics Lda. for the printing of our posters.

Andre Keenoy MOVIE OF THE MONTH!

I am often hesitant to recommend a foreign language film but, as Peter Bradshaw puts it, this is a ”profoundly disquieting movie, superbly acted and directed.” It does have English subtitles and parents are welcome to borrow it from our library. The setting is a remote village in northern Germany, in 1913, an outwardly placid but actually dysfunctional and repressive society, plagued with anonymous, retaliatory acts of malice and spite. In addition to these unsolved crimes, there are, enigmatically, others with perpetrators whose guilt is plain, such as the destruction of a cabbage crop by an embittered farmhand. A group of local children, who appear to go around together in unwholesome intimacy, could be the culprits. Yet there are others with grievances. The midwife and mother of a child with Down's syndrome, is having an unhappy affair with the doctor, who treats her cruelly. The movie is narrated in voiceover by the local teacher (Christian Friedel), now an old man, who explicitly announces that these painful events "could perhaps clarify some things that happened in this country". Could they? Within this puzzle, Haneke constructs scenes and sequences that are instant classics. The schoolmaster is conducting a delicate courtship of a local young woman, and despite Haneke's reputation for darkness, this plot-strand is gentle, touching and humorous. [Extract from www.guardian.co.uk, Peter Bradshaw]

SERVICE LEARNING IN THE LIBRARY Project “Livro Aberto” This year we chose to work with students at Costa do Sol. We usually go out to Costa do Sol to work with the students, but on our last Service Learning Day the students from Costa do Sol came to visit us instead. They loved the swings, the storytelling, the computer lab … but best of all was the barcode reader!

SERVICE LEARNING

Spotlight on ...

Special Education School #1 (The School for the Deaf) Last Thursday was a very special Service Learning Day for AISM. For the first time ever our grade 5 students came along to the field projects to have a sneak peek at the type of experience they will enjoy as part of the secondary school Service Learning Program next year in Grade 6. It was, in fact, an idea that 6th graders came up with. At Special Education School # 1 (School for the Deaf), our grade 5s jumped straight in! Ursula Peres-Gomes happily took on boys twice her size on the basketball court and had a blast before joining her classmates playing card games, doing puzzles, learning traditional games and sign language, and teaching the Deaf School students how to do the Macarena.

The Global issues Service Summit of 2013, held in Kenya was a sensational one. International kids from Madagascar, Ghana, Johannesburg, Nigeria, Zambia, Zimbabwe and other African countries got together to learn about the global issues we face today. This happened by interacting with each other, going to workshops, and most importantly listening to the amazing keynote speakers and expert panellists. The keynote speakers were incredible, inspirational and very encouraging. The first one up, Spencer West, climbed Mount Kilimanjaro, even though he had no legs. Then came Cassandra Lin, who is only fourteen, but persuaded her whole state to make throwing away cooking oil illegal, and instead reuse it to heat up their homes. The last keynote speaker, Justin Bedard, taught us how third culture kids such as ourselves could change our world in a positive way. All three keynotes were remarkable people who have accomplished amazing missions that create a positive impact on our world. So, after three whole days of meeting interesting people, listening to very knowledgeable speakers and doing workshops of our own, the students of AISM came back enthused and ready to make a change in the world. - Michaela Sorensen Street Address: Rua do Rio Raraga, 266, Bairro da Costa do Sol, Maputo Telephone: +258 2149 1994 /+258 2149 3306 / +258 2149 3359,

Lee Clagnaz SPORTS & ACTIVITIES AISJ Swim Meet AISM swimmers went to AISJ in late February to compete against Maru-APula Botswana, AIS-Cape Town, TASOK, and AISJ. Even though we had a smaller team than hosting team AISJ, we came in second a mere 21 points behind them. AISM swimmer Stefan Niehaus was named Top Male Swimmer at the competition. Both Stefan and Craig Cullen were undefeated in their individual events. Stefan Niehaus AISM Hosts Club Swim Meet AISM hosted the Dolphins and Sharks on 13 March. Once again our swimmers dominated, notching up an easy win. The remaining swimming events of the season will take place at the French School on Thursday 21 March and at Josina Machel on Saturday 23 March.

AISM Hosts Varsity and JV Basketball Tournament AISM hosted a 21 team basketball tournament on the weekend of 15-17 March. Our teams have shown incredible improvement this season and the results showed. Our Varsity Boys came in 4 th place after going undefeated in their group games. The JV Girls came in 3 rd, and our Varsity Girls made it all the way to the finals and finished in 2nd place. The highlight of the weekend was when our own JV Boys WON their division! This was the first AISM boys’ team to ever win a basketball tournament. Huge congratulations to all of the basketball players for such great work. Special thanks must be extended to all of the parents and teachers who volunteered at the basketball tournament. It would not have been possible to run the event without your help. Thank you for running the basketball games and keeping all of our players well fed and hydrated.
