Emerging in the context of an evolving urbanism in Melbourne, the public realm of E-Gate embodies a critical opportunity to at once offer exemplary urban open space for a rapidly growing population while harnessing the ecologically restorative potential of the next generation of this “smart” city’s urban form. A defining element to the E-Gate open space concept will be the integration of what we have termed the Productive Realm. Specifically this concept deals with the localized generation of power, food and clean water. The Productive Realm is akin to the public realm but focused on the integration of productive elements into the urban environment. The ability for urban areas to produce energy, clean water and food for local consumption has obvious environmental benefits and results in a reformed aesthetic. E-Gate provides an excellent opportunity to integrate a productive realm overlay in a newly developed piece of the city. Through an intensive activity network of food and energyproduction, water treatment systems, and the intimate experience of an interlinked hierarchy of socialy relevantplaces, the landscape of E-Gate is positioned to offer a layered open space response to the shifting challenges it will face in the decades ahead. Beyond the challenging technical aspects of this project lies the essential social network and establishment of a strong vibrant sense of place.

Design Principles Twelve key principles have emerged as the drivers of the E-Gate Landscape. These describe the individual spatial, ecological and movement systems within the public realm and define the essential functional elements of the landscape. This document describes how these systems interrelate to create a robust strategic framework for the open spaces of E-Gate. In addition to the principles the masterplan was developed with the following four broad climatic, environment and spatial elements;

An effective passive design measure is shading to prevent heat gain and then radiation in the summer months. Another very effective design measure is how exterior spaces allow solar gain through structures or trees integrated into the landscape design. This approach can reduce internal energy demands and significantly increase day time warmth in outdoor areas during the winter months enabling spaces to be comfortable and used all year round, to this end there is the exciting potential of E-gate’s landscape to be an inviting and seasonally responsive environment.

Air movement is a key mechanism to create comfort in outdoor heat. Air movement or ventilation has a direct impact on lowering temperatures, the sensation of a breeze on the skin creates a feeling of cooling and comfort. Landscape features can be used to guide natural breezes into and through key public areas.

The selection of materials will be essential to many aspects of sustainable landscape design, in terms of embodied energy and origin. Consideration of the solar reflectance index (SRI) and the absorption characteristics, when it is new and how it changes over time, a materials relevance to other developments in the vicinity and the extended docklands environment, the ecological, cultural, historic significance of materials and their use will all be critical to the creation of a pleasant landscape space.

Vegetation can add to the thermal buffering provided by careful selection of materials. Vegetation can cool the atmosphere in various ways – as a surface to avoid heat gain and as a shading device. Climbing vines combined with shading structures, as well as ‘green’ roofs and walls, when well designed, can provide some very effective microclimate solutions. Desert roofs with zero irrigation would also provide a surface that will minimise heat gain to the top of buildings.

Large water treatment ponds and wetlands make up much of the western parkland area. These are fed by the urban storm water runoff. By the time much of this water arrives at the wetlands it has been treated within the streets of E-Gate.

E-Gate can support approximately 4,500m2 of intensive horticulture = food for 160 people* “The Productive Realm” is a core element in E-Gate’s landscape and open space strategy. This refers to the meaningful use of open space for the production of food, water and energy, thus shifting a paradigm that primarily acknowledges the public landscape as that which composes and is comprised of SPACE, and focuses on a more legible and structured emotional connection to the often intangible sense of PLACE. Typical food production is found on the ground. E-Gate however, aims to achieve a population density higher than that of inner city Melbourne. To achieve a workable public realm all available ground level space has been harnessed for purposes of circulation, servicing, recreation, water management and ecological functions. This has led to a ‘roof top’ response for locating the Productive Realm. Intensive horticulture will be most appropriately located away from the residential buildings on roofs between 32 and 60M in height. This allows the residential areas to have a recreational and a more casual garden use. The higher roof spaces offer more appropriate solar and wind yields making them most applicable for dedicated energy produce. This does not however preclude the use of fruit and nut trees grown and cultivated within the River park area. The mode of food production proposed is one that is both economically sustainable and managed in conjunction with grocery and food supply within the E-Gate site and beyond. * within a reasonable scenario food types would be focused toward vegetables and herbs supplementing the diets of a broader population.

Doncaster Hill

Victoria Australia - Manningham Civic Centre Public Realm

The Manningham Civic Centre forms the central focus of the Doncaster Hill area and the City of Manningham. As a series of new buildings, pavilions and public spaces it provides a community hub that demonstrates leadership in integrated community initiatives, hosts the regional library and learning centre and provides a civic public space that hosts exhibitions, festival and concerts.

AECOM was engaged by Manningham City Council and the Department of Planning and Community Development to develop the concept design and design development documentation in conjunction with Haskell Architects. We provided water sensitive urban design water balance modeling, a youth based consultation strategy and a strong design focus on the public realm areas of the project. The Doncaster Hill Civic Precinct is located at the heart of the broader development area. The Civic Precinct hosts the municipal buildings, entertainment areas, exhibition spaces, outdoor learning, recreational open space and mixed used development areas. Simon was a key Landscape Architect on this project for Manningham City Council and the Department of Planning and Community Development, assisting Haskell Architects to produce a preliminary master plan for the precinct.

The circulation networks encourage activity and exercise through a structured hierarchy of pathways, connecting parklands and development consisting of the following;

Water reaches the parkland from the development in a cleansed form as it will have passed through numerous treatment systems within the development before a nal cleansing in the wetlands adjacent to the open water body. Water will be stored within the water body as part of the Western water harvesting scheme. The open water body will provide parkland habitat and recreation for the residents and broader community.

Two sports zones are proposed to the parklands, with a ten hectare zone to the north and an eight hectare c sports amenities will be ned in consultation with the community and ne programmatic requirements.

Low maintenance grasslands will complement the existing site character in the parklands and will provide a sense of open space and a natural setting that will be utilized by the regional community for passive open space activities such as picnics and walking.

The parkland revegetation is a key element to the parklands providing:

Productive trees will feature to the periphery of the parklands adjacent to the community centre. These will be structured in the form of a mini orchard that will be run in conjunction with the adjacent community gardens, sustainability and Permacultural centre.

The sports zones will be integrated into the broader parklands character with indigenous trees stitching sports areas and revegation zones together – refer illustrative montages. An amphitheatre will be located adjacent to the northern sports zone that will provide a regional facility for outdoor community gatherings.

Both regional and local play elements are proposed in the parklands. The regional play area will be located to the south of the parklands opposite the southern sports zone. Smaller but related local play facilities are located along the creek line pathway at the junction of path networks. Play elements to these areas consist of the tness and play elements that are detailed in the signage strategy component of this report.

The vegetation is structured so as to provide shelter from colder southerly winds, whilst allowing warm (yet cooling) breezes though the site from the north westerly direction. Trees will be planted to the edges of key path networks to provide shade and to reinforce the circulation hierarchy. Some exotic shade trees will be planted to turf areas, such as that adjacent to the water body, where deciduous trees are desirable for shade in summer and sun in winter.

Community parks are distributed evenly thoughout the neighborhoods so that they are within a 200 meter walking distance from any resident. Analysis 1/2 acre of lawn skirts a typical ranch house set against the only wooded patch in the area. Sprawling commercial development has voraciously rooting itself a stoneâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s throw away to the south and west. An unclear line separates unmanaged industry complexes and this residential community. Surface runoff from the neighborhood works its way across this yard and navigates through the north side of the basement wall occasionally flooding the home. The drainage problem makes itself evident annually, and has become a serious concern. Implied by the local feeding birds, raccoon family, and other random evidence of wildlife is a modest sanctuary amidst adverse environmental conditions. 30 species of songbirds have been cataloged by homeowner Gail Riley, who is both a veteran school teacher and an amateur ornithologist. A walking survey of the nearby woods leads us to select a plate of local vegetation to include river birch, lily of the valley, blueberry, bayberry, winterberry, summersweet, and cranberry viburnum. Program A pea stone pathway which doubles as a swale draws the water to a lowpoint in the backyard. Patches of lawn are defined to create varying senses of enclosure and provide a system of hierarchical organization. Excavation of the drainage scheme revealed several tons of existing native stones which serve to retain slopes, provide seating, and unify the garden experience. Birds are the topic of conversation here. A myriad of chirps and whistles acknowledge the native plant palate.

A precise design was left out, no formal analysis or program. No plan or threedimensional rendering aided the project. A common respect for materiality and technique by myself and the clients would generate the work. The design is interested in revealing causality; the progression of Earthâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s physiography from historical geology to the agrarian and urban human landscapes of today. It was important for us to resolve why their home is where it is, how its domestic form has and will continue to evolve, and what measures can be reasonably achieved based on the assignment of the particular elements of the place within a formal scale of values. But most importantly, how it functions within the larger ecological matrix. What lends greater legibility to this philosophy was the participation in the creative process as the environmental assets are flushed out of obscurity. A collegial and deliberative approach to real materials and conditions progressed within a consequential and physically bound context. The granite and shale outcrop is the anchor, a diffused evergreen canopy the shelter. The pond through the living Hemlock and Pine columns draws the eye outward.

Analysis An addition has doubled the square footage of thistwo story cape, providing the needed living space for the large family who lives here. The newinterior is open and inspired by a charming old world aesthetic. Lawn dominates the immediate vicinity, surrounded by the native ecosystem of central Massachusetts. A 15â&#x20AC;&#x2122; hill separates the two parts of the structureindicating an interesting change in topography and a circulation design challenge. Anunderutilized entry to the front of the original structure is nearly inaccessible, and the new main entry is perched six feet above the driveway level, supported by a temporary deck and staircase. Program This garden embodies rhythm and harmony, growing from a rocky hillside, framed by native vegetation. Walking moves us through the experience. Resting within it engraves a sense of permanence. Radiating tangents of granite spiral up challenging topography, each retaining the earth above it, and together establishing an ascending or descending rhythm. Lines indicate form by shaping the edges of materials. Structural habits and limitations of stone are explored to extend their confines.

This line of inquiry stems from an investigation of the agricultural significance of the archipelago in alignment with a belief that we can bring together disparate pieces of the areaâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s history and landscapes into a productive cohesion of heritage, activity, and socioeconomic advancement. The intention is to re-activate and showcase the context for what it truly is. Santo Stefano, whose terrain and structures represent the broader context of the Maddalena archipelago, is the gateway to Maddalena National Park, and thus to an understanding of the history and ecology of the greater archipelago. This history and ecology canâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t however, be imagined as something thats fossilized in time, but rather, it must be engaged through active recreation and educational programs that espouse the greater mission of the park. The Serra Farm, as well as the military remnants on the island espouse the most relevant organizational system in this conversation weâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re having about a resolution between the unparalleled ecological and visual impact here, and the abandoned points of defense. A network of marooned defensible structures and the formerly productive landscapes of the Serra Farm imply an overarching framework. A pixilated arrangement of follies, that are being assimilated into the place, as their use evolves into obsolescence.

There is a pronounced change in elevation signaling a fertile valley within the two promontories on Santo Stefano. The valley is really a corridor, attracting not only the sheet flow of rain from the two adjacent watersheds, but also the current of tourists and students to and from the mainland.

Existing pathways pick up the connections where the sea left off, unifying all the developments proposed in this scheme. The existing gravel roads will be re-assigned as the primary island loop, while secondary and tertiary circuits or tangents will occur where their needed to unite the key cultural site features with the larger transportation network. The paths physically join the experience, and with a few enhancements theyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ll afford hikers and those on mountain bikes a good deal of movement and union with the terrain.

Circle Mumbai

A new means of movement and distribution for India’s island city.

Transportation infrastructure is the spine of economic and social growth. Other agendas for urban renewal follow. The current motivation to accelerate development of the many proposed mass circulation schemes in Mumbai should be encouraged as they represent necessary steps in inviting both domestic and foreign direct investment into other contingent arenas of the city’s economy. At the 2007 India Infrastructure Investment Conference, it was asserted that while current spending on infrastructure has been about five percent of GDP, it is now targeted to be nine percent by 2012, which would call for an investment of about 500 billion dollars over the next five years. The proposal before you works at the regional scale by physically unifying the five key Central Business Districts in Greater Mumbai with a singular organized ring corridor. As an urban design framework it willencourage the inevitable and increasing densification of the city to happen along this road, (which already exists as a composite of iterative micro-connections but lacks a higher cohesion.)

Where the “circle” navigates through the unique districts of Mumbai it will enhance the public capacity and mobility through Air Rights development. Determined spatially at the neighborhood scale by social infrastructure, pedestrian circulation networks and microclimate, each composition is adaptable to the dynamic foreground matrix and part of a decisive and fundamental strategy for not only increasing, but also strengthening Mumbai’s carrying capacity in the coming years.

Servicios La Prusia Organizing Principles :

Landscape and architectural form & structure being inextricably linked to an emphasis on social interaction and collaboration in La Prusia must be correspondingly organized to both anticipate and accommodate program and circulation in such a way to enhance the potential of social design through ecological sensibility and environmental kinship.The diversity of these public and intimate landscape elements alike contributes significantly to the visual richness of the overall site and should guide all development considerations to prevent future encroachment.

Planting Principles :

All future planting outside of the preservation spaces will reinforce the concept of a cultivated nature, where native species are carefully selected and reintroduced in appropriate ways which reflect and enhance the diversity and spatial integrity of the preservation areas.

Recommendations :

1.Existing productive vegetation is the datum for the organization of social spaces. 2.Preserved groves of trees are delineated with a physical no-cut/no-fill marker based on their specific canopy footprint. 3.The outer-most drip edge of the tree canopy serves as the dominant means of demarcation for the preserved areas. 4.Surface lines extending from the horizontal layout of the protected areas informs the spatial arrangement of all further spatial and structural interventions. 5.These protected areas will be designated as public realm.

The edge opportunity created by the preservation areas is elastic and accommodating to the ambitious variety of program that is being proposed. Infrastructure Principles :

The absorption and collection of rainwater is crucial for sustaining the viability of the development’s ecological and socioeconomic capacity. Low-cost and low-maintenance systems of stormwater management are prioritized over “piped”, catch-basin /detention systems that repel runoff over and through impervious structures. More expensive and ecologically harmful “solutions” will be curbed whenever possible. Instead, rainwater is to be treated as part of the visible landscape. Open streams and swales will provide all necessary conveyance and infiltration.

 Recommendations :

1. Vehicular and pedestrian circulation through the site will be designed in accordance with the recommendations of the canopy preservation framework. 2. Any significant environmental impact (roads, etc.) will occur outside of designated no-cut/no-fill areas. 3. Porous paving units (adoquines) will comprise the surface condition of the circulation systems. 4. Wet meadows at either end of the site serve as dominant central points for the articulation of surrounding activity. As historical and ecological nodes they are to be reinforced and enhanced through recommended policies that comply with preservation efforts.

Project Experience: Current - May 2005 E-Gate: carbon neutral precinct masterplan West Melbourne, Victoria, Australia AECOM’s Design + Planning practice was engaged by Major Projects Victoria to lead the urban design for the E-Gate site at West Melbourne. The site is approximately 20 hectares and given its size and location, it is of strategic significance in terms of the high density inner urban redevelopment opportunities it provides. The vision is to create an innovative, low carbon, sustainable and car free precinct that facilitates positive community development while providing diverse, affordable and high quality living. This is to be achieved in a variety of housing types and available to a wide demographic, with good accessibility, highly developed services and transport. The objectives of Melbourne 2030 / Melbourne at 5 million are prime considerations for the project, which aims to set a new benchmark for urban living in the 21st century. Anthony’s Cutting: Western Highway realignment Victoria, Australia The project consists of five kilometres of new highway between Melton and Bacchus Marsh, to the west of Melbourne. With its steep grades and sharp turns through the cutting, this area has historically been a Victorian black spot. The realignment will achieve a quality, integrated road/landscape outcome, which provides a safe and memorable journey through the distinctive western plains and connection of this important Melbourne growth area to the city. The project is being jointly delivered by the State and Commonwealth Governments. AECOM’s landscape team is engaged within the Alliance structure of VicRoads.


East Coburg: mixed-use housing Coburg, Victoria, Australia VicUrban enlisted AECOMâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Design + Planning practice to design a living roof to offset urban heat island affects and create a sense of place atop a mixed-use development in East Coburg. The rooftop design has evolved from a productive site for urban agriculture to a native forest. The final composition uses reflective mirrors to expand the sense of space and bring light to central courtyard dwellings and plantings. Once complete, the terrestrial garden will appear to be constructed on terra firma, despite the fact that it is actually hovering 3 stories above the grade due to the advanced engineering which integrates deep planting within the slab. Doncaster Hill: civic precinct Doncaster, Victoria, Australia The Manningham Civic Centre forms the central focus of the Doncaster Hill area and the City of Manningham. As a series of new buildings, pavilions and public spaces it provides a community hub that demonstrates leadership in ESD and integrated community initiatives, hosts the regional library and learning centre and provides a civic public space that hosts exhibitions, festival and concerts. We were engaged by Manningham City Council and the Department of Planning and Community Development to develop the concept design and design development documentation in conjunction with Haskell Architects. We provided water sensitive urban design water balance modelling, a youth based consultation strategy and a strong design focus on the public realm areas of the project. Our solution to the site features an â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;urban forestâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;, passive cooling and air induction features as well as a concert viewing area, urban civic forecourt and boulevard scaled streetscape. I served as a designer for the public realm.


Seoul Grand Park: Gwacheon, Korea

AECOM recently won an international competition for Seoul Grand Park in Korea. The winning entry, Gaia: The Living World, envisions an integrated entertainment and educational experience that revitalises the urban realm and showcases Korean heritage. This is a unique opportunity to re-think Seoul Grand Park, taking amusement and zoo attractions into a new paradigm of leisure, entertainment and learning for the future. Ascot Chase: residential masterplan Ascot Vale, Victoria, Australia Ascot Chase will be a premium River Parkland community of approximately 400 dwellings in Melbourne’s inner North West. With a deep regard for the landscape setting in the Maribyrnong Valley and fabric of the established suburb of Ascot Vale, AECOM’s Landscape Plan embodies the City of Moonee Valley’s principles and philosophies of water and environmental management, their goals for sustainability and development of the area to promote lifestyle, diversity and choice. Caojehing: corporate campus masterplan Shanghai, China Concept Design, Phasing strategies, complex cost estimating and design development for this 10 hectare Corporate “high-technology” Campus. AECOM’s Shanghai office was responsible for much of the client liaison and administration work, while the Melbourne team was Design Lead. Victoria Park: recreation renewal Melbourne, Victoria, Australia Located within the City of Yarra, Victoria Park is a local landmark within inner Melbourne. AECOM wss commissioned to deliver the master plan design. This project will replace a demolished grandstand with a functional and aesthetic landscape which provides green relief from the stadium, creates an appealing face at the street edge and from within the park as well as delivering a functioning drainage and water strategy. I played a support role on this project, generating details and amending construction documents.


Land 121 Bandiana: army barracks & training facilities Wadonga, Victoria, Australia Design+Planning was engaged to embue the engineering and architectural design process of this Defence Department Training Facility and surrounds with ecologically driven landscape principles and to provide suitable landform and micro-climate based strategies in the implimentation of meaningful stormwater and landscape management practices. The resulting design confronts issues of water resources, permiability and heat island effect through the creative use of on-site passive irrigation and greatly enhances the identity of the Bandiana Barracks through a layered ecosystems based approach to the sculpting of topography and through the careful selection of regenerative local vegetation Footscray Central Activities District: community development Footscray, Victoria, Australia Footscray will be home to a new $350 million landmark development at McNab Avenue. The currently polluted site will be a vibrant new community, incorporating an array of residential and commercial development, shared community spaces, cafes and facilities. The high quality and innovative design includes: 5 Star Green Star and A Grade office space, A community kitchen and garden to create a social environment and eco friendly and affordable meal options, Excellent access to transport including trains, trams and buses, and shops, More housing options for new home buyers and student accomodation, Rooftop gardens accessible to tenants, providing space to relax and socialize, Co-location of Government departments and agencies, including office space for around 1200 employees. The Victorian Government will deliver this exciting new development by 2014. AECOM Design + Planning designed the conceptual plan for the public realm.


Servicos La Prusia: (ongoing) social developments 30 Hectares, La Prusia, Granada, Nicaragua As Lead Landscape Consultant for the PARC Foundation & Estudio Teddy Cruz Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;m charged with the production of large scale conceptual designs for all landscape components of social housing developments in La Prusia, Granada, Nicaragua. Daily duties include aiding the diverse leadership team of architects NGO volunteers, community members and philanthropists in all landscape related decisions and informing team members of relevant stormwater management and wetland mitigation practices when laying out programmatic structures and other large scale infrastructural interventions on site. Team building and design management skills are central to my involvement with the project. Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;m forced to be creative with very limited financial resources, a low-skilled labor pool, and a limited palate of materials. La Vida Del Corazon: reforestation & educational nature reserve 80 Hectares, San Rafael, Costa Rica Working with a large coffee cooperative and the Ministry of Environment and Energy, My client and I assembled a master plan for her 80-hectare ranch. The plan includes: clustered productive forests in accordance with national guidelines, a dude ranch / agri-tourism destination, 16 units of artist co-housing, classrooms, camping areas, and a meditation center. I was responsible for site layout and determining appropriate scales for each intended program, designing program elements according to carrying capacity (within extremely challenging topography) and managing dialog between stakeholders and agencies interested in the project. Norfolk Housing: public realm & housing integration 1 Acre, 12 units, 474-484 Norfolk St., Cambridge, MA A small scale Boston based developer recruited me to design a parking scheme, garden space and an arrival sequence for an urban revival housing development project in central Cambridge. I generated the circulation and open space layout, designed the landscape systems including: excavation strategies, irrigation, hardscapes, parking areas, drainage, lighting and planting plan/schedule. I produced all necessary drawings and specifications for on-site implementation.


Franklin Corner Housing: neighborhood infill Âź Acre, Single Family Home, 72 Franklin St., Cambridge, MA Set into the dense urban fabric of Cambridge, this project is about engaging in and actively hosting community activities. I designed the landscape to accommodate social gatherings and reflect the small scale of the context. The plan calls for ample storage and gathering space within a Âź acre garden. My work began with several consultations, then the client and I collaborated over a period of one month and I drew plans and detailed perspectives for the landscape, then I produced full cost estimates and invited other contractors to bid. I reviewed other bids and generated a revised proposal. The client then invited me to design his home interiors; I did so, expanding and enhancing serviceable space. I made detailed sketch-up models of each room and each renovation proposal, specified appliances and furnishings and acted as Project Manager overseeing sub-contractors through to completion of the interiors. Harvard University Community Service Fellowship Summer 2008 I was Awarded travel and living expenses to develop prototype systems of rainwater catchment and productive landscapes to be retrofitted into an existing social housing project in the community of La Prusia on the outskirts of Granada, Nicaragua. I Organized NGO volunteers, children and adults from the community to create an edible schoolyard, medicinal garden and rainwater catchment/irrigation systems. With 3 other architects, I designed the systems to correspond with a larger master plan, raised funds, gathered materials, generated local support for the project, and implemented the design within a very small window and with limited resources. Bittersweet Farm: horse ranch on the Pelham Ridge 11 Acre Residence & Co-Housing, Shutesbury, MA I developed a forested bridal path, dressage course, stables, wildflower meadows, a pond and stream, entry/arrival sequences for numerous home entries and a planting scheme that would benefit her extended family of Morgans (horses). I conducted several consultations prior to the design, and produced full cost estimates for the entire system. Weâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re now in the process of selecting materials and a construction team for the spring.


Southwick Barn: timber framed addition 28 Acres, Southwick, CT Designing and overseeing the construction of this 4,000 sq ft timber framed barn was a challenge for me. I worked closely with a highly experienced team of carpenters and other sub-contractors to realize the project. The client required more storage and recreation space than their colonial house could afford and they asked me to help in shaping their vision for a contemporary version of a traditionally built barn for their property. Several consultations involving sketches and dialog, along with the clients selection of specific fixtures and furnishing styles aided the design process. Manhan River Garden: patios and canopies on the riverside 42 Acres, Westfield, MA This is a typical waterfront residential project. I designed the landscape plan which included: 5,000 sq ft of native stone patios and 4,000 sq ft of walkways threaded through a formal bosque of 9 Honeylocusts. The garden overlooks the Manhan river so the main function of the terraces is to frame and enhance the viewshed out. The design was completed by another construction crew. Stanley Park: inventory of the cityâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s arboretum 60 Acres, Westfield, MA Working with the Board of Directors at Stanley Park, I was invited to assist in the creation of a plant species inventory that would serve the park in their efforts to modernize their records and public image. I spent several days on site measuring and cataloging significant vegetation and I finally submitted a set of maps illustrating the contents of the park with best-practice based principles and recommendations for future site planning. Marriot Entry Court: Landscape entry/arrival sequence design 40 Acres, Huntington, MA I drafted plans, sections and perspectives at appropriate scales in concept and DD phases for this project. I served the client as a general consultant and I supplied several hand renderings to illustrate design intentions. I estimated project construction costs and clarified the drawing package for sub-contractors.


Stonework by the pond: an anchor in the forest 24 Acres, Wendell, MA Two entomologists living on a beautiful pond in central Massachusetts hired me to construct their vision of an observation platform set against the south side of their large home. I began with several consultations to deterime our working relationship, sketched concepts over dialog, drafted a materials list and construction budget, assembled project construction team, and project managed construction. There were no working drawings in the project, rather each stone pulled from the ground was examined and inventoried. Using a track driven skidsteer and a Lull, I set the huge stones in place according to their individual properties. I acquired the excavating and earthmoving equipment, all construction materials, and I managed the entire construction process. Bedard Residence: turning granite 6 Acres, Hubbardston, MA Asked by my clients to provide an entry and arrival sequence for a new addition to their home, I worked to compliment the architecture with a series of garden spaces which could be temporarily adapted as informal gatherings occurred. The anticipation of such events required I work closely with the clients to resolve issues of scale and materiality. Hand drawn plans and sections were demanded, and a traditional dry-laid method of wall and hardscape construction was employed. I assembled the construction team, generated the design development and construction documents to realize the concept, acquired heavy equipment, purchased all necessary materials and served as foreman/project manager to see the project through to manifestation. The work began in the fall, when major excavation and stonework were completed, then the next spring I returned to resolve and build a planting scheme into the previously built armature. Rouzier Garden: edible planting beds 1 Acre, Amherst, MA I was hired to design a series of planting schemes to compliment my clientâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s desire to prepared meals from her own land. The garden grew from several key site features, a grand Pine tree, a small knoll, and strategic entry points to the architecture. I selected plant materials, created a seasonal menu, and advised in appropriate construction methods.


Quabbin House: sweeping views to the south 14 Acres, New Salem, MA Working with an experienced local Forester and the client, I produced a land use phasing plan for 14 wooded acres on a hilltop overlooking the Quabbin Reservoir. I sited the home to be built in a Hemlock grove near the hilltop based on principles I drafted with the Forester and the client. I produced a set of site drawings to demonstrate appropriate excavation and construction strategies. I then designed the home and gardens. Private Residence: a front yard to the village 2 Acres, Longmeadow, MA I was responsible for the design and construction of this small garden. The project is built around an undulating berm I created to screen intense winds and frame the community entryway along the road. The garden has within it several gathering spaces, seating and viewing opportunities and discrete spatial moments shaped specifically for contemplation. I drew plans, sections and perspectives, secured the bid to build, assembled the construction team, and acquired all necessary materials and equipment to complete the project. Drainage Swale Construction: integrated planting and runoff 13 Acres, Shutesbury, MA A severe drainage problem in the center of my clientâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s backyard initiated this project. After some consultations and many hours of site analysis, I designed an infiltration and conveyance system that gently modified the landform in the yard. I acquired the necessary heavy equipment, excavated (11), 2m x 2m x 2m dry wells along the course of the flooded channel, connected them with a large swale above a corrugated perforated pipe (to build in redundancy), and backfilled the system with 60 tons of highly porous crushed stone. After installing a layer of filter fabric over the system, I re-graded the landscape and planted it with native wetland plants. The water flowing down the hillside now irrigates the wildflowers and wetland species and any overflow is harnessed and conveyed around the home to a low point retention basin.


Flye-Raubeson Estate: grand views to the Pioneer Valley 22½ Acres, New Salem, MA After a local timber framing company finished the construction of a new 5,000 sq ft “log cabin” on a west facing hillside in the woods of central Massachusetts, I was recruited by the client to produce a landscape design and land use phasing plan for the surrounding terrain. My approach to the project began with several site visits and many hours of conversation and reflection. Blasting the hillside for the foundation left between 80-100 tons of boulders strewn about the site near the house. I utilized this found material and designed large riprap walls to retain an upper terrace and help connect the house with its context. A sloping Apple orchard, Paper Birch groves, and a series of trellised gathering spaces throughout the landscape help situate the large structure. Garwood Landscape: descending terraces to the lake 1 Acre, West Brookfield, MA I was hired to advise and serve the client as landscape consultant in realizing the structural elements of her waterfront landscape. The client had the vision for the site and I shaped that vision with specific landform and hardscape gestures. I acquired all the necessary equipment and materials and assembled and managed the construction team. Stonewall at Grantwood: reclaimed native stone 3 Acres, Amherst, MA This project represents my first extensive masonry effort. I designed and built the straight, gravity held retaining wall with 20+ tons of native Goshen Stone. Riley Garden: a bird sanctuary in the suburbs 1 Acre, Gardner, MA This project began as a consultation for a drainage problem. The client’s basement was flooding with the runoff from her surrounding neighbor’s land. I excavated a 1-2m wide shallow swale/path around the home to draw the stormwater away from the foundation. I used the excavated material to create a series of semi-enclosed spaces along the circulation and selected a number of herbaceous and woody flowering native plants to further shape the spaces and intrigue local songbirds into the garden.
