his issue of Style launches you into the new year by celebrating all that is great about summer – from days at the beach to holidays at the bach. With January upon us, many of us are finally free to escape to our favourite summer destinations. Baches are home to a wide range of family memories. Many offer a jolt back in time, where creature comforts were limited, families came together and solar showers were a luxury compared to the ubiquitous long drop. Today, with the insurgence of holiday accommodation websites, almost anyone’s home, second property, or sleepout, has become a potential home away from home (and business venture). We searched high and low for a special getaway destination that would provide home comforts, enable holidaymakers to detach from the world and, most importantly, offered a sea view, and we found just the spot on Banks Peninsula. Gaynor Stanley escaped the city buzz to discover what many have already experienced – The Point in Pigeon Bay, an architecturally designed solar-powered retreat a world away from city life (p. 18). As avid style followers, we know you will want to be ahead of the game with the latest and greatest in all facets of life. We did some research on what impact 2018 could have on your home, life and fashion. It’s exciting to see colour coming back – in a big way – into our interiors, and there are wonderful handbags on the horizon! The eco-conscious among us will be pleased to learn electric vehicles are on the rise – and Christchurch is leading the charge in New Zealand. As you will read in our Report (p. 14), shared schemes can enable you to get behind one of these flash sets of wheels, with charging stations set to become much more commonplace around town in 2018. If you find yourself back behind a desk already, check the weather forecast and make a date with the beach – we are spoilt for choice in Canterbury. Stylist Stephanie Rumble shares her tips on how to buy the right swimwear for your shape (p. 32) and has collated the latest in summer fashion for our shoot at Sumner beach (p. 35). INSIDE WORD LOVE SUMMER. Turn off Netflix, pack a picnic and some seats, and head to the Arts Centre to enjoy great films on the big screen for a gold coin donation. The last opportunity to experience the Leighs Construction Outdoor Cinema at the North Quad will be on February 9, and the films to be shown will be determined by public vote. Summer’s a great time to reconnect with the city, and in doing so, exploring the artworks that adorn our streets. Download the SCAPE Public Art App and take a self-guided tour of the Legacy Walkway, past the permanent works added to SCAPE’s public art collection each season. The newest, Seung Yul Oh’s Conduct Cumulus, has emerged from the lawn in the southern quadrangle of the Arts Centre. Enjoy its cheery yellow and white bubbles, then stroll to the adjacent quadrangle to visit one of the two humanoid cast-iron Stay sculptures by Sir Antony Gormley before walking down to the Avon River to see its identical twin. Need to cool down with something sweet? The good news is Rollickin’ Gelato has added to its New Regent Street destination with this second sweet spot in the Arts Centre (in the restored Boys’ High building).

LOVE CHCH. If you haven’t been to the Canterbury Museum for a while, make some time. Showing there until February 28 are the 50 Greatest Photographs of National Geographic. See the incredible moments, places and people (like Afghan Girl, 1984, Steve McCurry, left) captured on film the last 120 years. If you haven’t made your way back to the Christchurch Adventure Park, make it happen. After a 10-month closure and the logging of 600 acres, there are new trails to explore, plus New Zealand’s longest and highest zip line and spectacular views from the 1.8km-long lift (the country’s longest). The lift and trails are open every day from 12–7pm (the gate and the on-site café opens at 11am). While exploring the city, pop in to Ara’s North Green to see the installation by New Zealand artist Bing Dawe. Diverting. Defending. Birds over the Waimakariri features local birdlife and their future.

SACHA VEE. SUNDAY 21 JANUARY Forty million YouTube views for her collective recordings tend to suggest neo-soul singer Sacha Vee is onto something. The local songstress developed a global following during her time in Europe, when she teamed up with Dutch producers Chef Red and Killing Skills and released two EPs with BBE Records. Her collaboration with Polish hip-hop luminary OSTR produced three hit singles, two double platinum albums and a mere 20 million YouTube views. CAM SCOTT. SUNDAY 28 JANUARY There’s somethin’ bout this boy and his rock-inspired take on contemporary country. South Canterbury’s Cam Scott was awarded 2015 CMANZ Male Artist of the Year less than 12 months after his launch as a recording artist with Somethin Bout A Girl. Since then he’s played big stages in Australia, including the Tamworth Country Music Festival. Known for his high-energy performances, Cam and his band bring the party wherever they go.

Then dress the room by adding some bold accents in deep yellow and black. INTERIOR TRENDS Trends emerging from the latest Milan Furniture Fair tell us fringe won’t only be confined to your handbag, and we’ll be seeing more of lilac, rust and fibreglass. Colour Say goodbye to green, this year’s Pantone Colour of The Year has been declared Ultra Violet. Described as being a colour associated with experimentation and non-conformity, it’s also the colour du jour for mindfulness and meditation spaces. Resene is backing this change, predicting a shift away from powdery blues and pastel earth tones to bold and intense colours. While an earthiness will be retained, expect to see a clever use of colour combinations that are moody, strong and unexpected. Bright hues are the direction of choice, to encompass themes of all things wanderlust,

including bringing a touch of the tropics into the home. In fact, there’s talk of neon and rich gem-like hues on the horizon! Living Couches will sit low, soft and comfy – with many designers showcasing plump and curvy styles like Jaime Hayon for Fritz Hanson’s Lune sofa. Fringing skirted not only couches but coffee tables – too 1950s? Bring in the look with a few fringed cushions. Kitchen The 40mm-plus stone benchtop is out as profiles slim down as much as possible, even in marble (which moves to more discreet, earthy tones). Sometimes the bench edge isn’t visible at all, with the benchtop sunk into the cabinetry. All-black kitchens are in, not just for cabinetry, but stone, metal fittings and sinks.

EV CHARGING AHEAD You may soon find yourself zipping around in an electric car. Christchurch is already the official electric vehicle (EV) capital of the nation and the Christchurch City Council has initiatives aplenty to encourage wider uptake. So it may be time to order your Tesla Model 3, available internationally from the second half of 2018 (though production on the right-hand drive model doesn’t even start until 2019). If you can’t wait that long, the Nissan Leaf was rated the most reliable car in New Zealand in a Consumer NZ survey, outperforming 22 brands and 68 other models – the vast majority of which were petrol! In another NZ first, a 100-strong fleet of car-shared EVs began rolling out here in November. Yoogo provides the service for 15 local organisations from the council and Beca to Chapman Tripp. Residents will also be able to book and use the fully electric Hyundai Ioniqs and BMWi3s from March 2018. Book by the minute, hour or day, or keep it overnight at www.yoogoshare.co.nz Where can you borrow an EV? Christchurch Art Gallery car park, the West End car park and Christchurch International Airport are active now. Another seven hubs are on the way to Lichfield Street car park, The Crossing car park, Ara Institute, University of Canterbury, Papanui and Fendalton Libraries, and Lyttelton Community Centre. Where are the charging stations? Sumner, New Brighton, Parklands, the Botanic Gardens, Little River and Akaroa, with more planned for the Lichfield Street car park and QEII Recreation and Sport Centre.

FITNESS FADS The founder of Cadence Cycling Studio, Korey Gibson, has been in the fitness industry for more than 20 years and seen his fair share of trends come and go. He told Style what to expect this year. High-intensity interval training (HIIT) will continue its rapid rise in popularity. It seems the busier we get, the more popular this type of training becomes. The idea is to achieve maximum caloric burn in 30 to 45 minutes through alternating short periods of intense exercise with active recovery periods. Yoga is here to stay, but it is changing. It might upset the yoga purists, but yoga will be infused into all workouts (including at cycling studio classes) – think interval training and spin classes with yoga. These workouts will look to incorporate the physical, mental and spiritual strengths of yoga into everyday workouts without sacrificing time for a cardio blast and resistance training. In addition to more accessible wearable technology, expect to see gyms and studios invest in some innovative in-house technology that will be able to personalise workouts and show you your real-time results and achievements. Calisthenics training (bodyweight only) is sticking around. The term functional gets thrown about, but it’s easier to think of it as ‘the body being strong through every plane and angle of movement’. We should be capable of consistently performing our daily movements and actions better and stronger. Bodyweight training is much more than just pull-ups and push-ups, so ask your gym for ideas.

HANDBAGS OF 2018 The spring/summer 2018 runways heralded some new bag designs we’ll be swinging Down Under in a few months’ time. Think gigantic (look to Louis Vuitton and Balenciaga), geometric (Paco Rabanne’s cube, Marni’s boxes and Dolce & Gabbana’s circles), patterned (hard to go past Prada or Versace), fringes and tassels (Calvin Klein shook these in a big way), and doublebagging (two bags is de rigeur for Chloe, Fendi and others). And if those trends take you out of your comfort zone, you’ll be relieved to hear classic white is also right (try Loewe, Tom Ford or Chanel).

From the outset, Ed Aitken knew he wanted to build a solar-powered eco house with rammed earth walls.

T

he point is, this is not your quintessential Kiwi ‘bach’. There’s no brightly coloured fibro cement, faded Formica and hand-medown furniture squeezed into a compact floorplan in a beaut spot. Rather, The Point is emblematic of today’s upscale holiday homes, with steel, cedar and rammed earth housing luxuriously appointed, cleverly designed and generous interiors. The Point is, though, decidedly in a beaut spot. It was this magnificent location – a rocky headland jutting into the western side of Pigeon Bay – that inspired its build. The Point defines the southern tip of the smaller Holmes Bay and the Aitken family farm, which stretches along 13km of coastline to the north. “Ed’s mother always wanted to build a house on this spot and we’d often gather here for family picnics,” says Penny Aitken. A seed was planted and it was around 2008 that Ed decided, “We must do something about getting that house built in our lifetime.” From the outset, Ed Aitken knew he wanted to build a solar-powered eco house with rammed earth walls. But it wasn’t until 2012, working with architect Graeme Finlay of Warren & Mahoney, that building began, taking inspiration from the sustainable designs of one of Australia’s most recognised architects Glenn Murcutt. Construction finished in 2013 and The Point has been available for holiday rentals since 2014.

The eight category winners in the 2017 Bach of the Year Awards were selected by public vote from Bookabach’s shortlist of 11,000 holiday homes across the country. The Point won gold in the ‘eco’ category, with the supreme award going to the ‘best setting’ winner, a beachfront property in Whangamata, Coromandel.

Like a Murcutt design, The Point, resting on an eight-metre high clifftop pummelled by waves on three sides, is keenly in touch with its landscape. After an hour and a half’s scenic drive up and over the Banks Peninsula hills to the Eastern Bays, the cabbage-tree lined driveway leads around a bend to reveal a linear structure, its long mono-pitched roof housing 12 solar panels. The northern elevation is almost entirely soaring glass walls shielded by deep eaves, carefully angled to allow the perfect amount of sun to warm the concrete floor and maximise the home’s passive solar benefits. In the coldest winter months, this is supplemented with diesel-powered underfloor heating. Yearround, gas heats rainwater collected in tanks for the showers to ensure the solar batteries stay at optimal charge for guests. Extra tall glass sliding doors look to views of the sea through native bush left in place as protection against the notorious easterly, and these concertina open to flow both living and bedroom spaces to the lawn. The black steel beams and oiled ply that line the eaves extend inside to the raked ceiling that runs the length of the home. The southern elevation, both inside and out, is formed of massive 50cm-thick slabs of rammed earth. A Hawea specialist, working alongside Akaroa builder Kevin Templeton,

created these structures from 92 tonnes of clay dug from the driveway. Essentially, it’s another passive thermal technique to keep the home warm in winter and cool in summer, but the beauty and warmth of these softly textured walls is also one of the defining features of The Point’s architecture. Another remarkable feature is how the kitchen, bathrooms and second bedroom sit in the centre of the house with an open walkway either side. This enables sight lines to the windows in each corner of the house, however, if privacy is required, both bedrooms can be closed off with cavity sliders. The airy master bedroom at the eastern end opens to its own east-facing deck and feature windows of differing heights frame bay views. On a clear day, you can even see out to the Kaikouras from bed. Halfway along the 33m x 6m home, an entrance door wrapped in copper commands attention. It’s one of the industrial details the Aitkens specified for The Point, referencing the copper they often find washed up on the beach from shipbuilding days past. Penny planned copper lightshades over the colossal island bench in the designer kitchen, but she “hasn’t quite got around to that yet”. For now, the shades are repurposed Vietnamese fishing baskets, matching a woven picture of one, also from Vietnam, that hangs

over the striking fireplace at the eastern end of the living room. To either side of the fireplace more glass doors open to what must be a favourite space for Bookabach renters, the outdoor room with its own open fireplace and grill plate for cooking snags on a summer’s night. Or might it be the private swimming cove, reached by a short and steep path through ferns down the southern cliff? Guests in the two-bedroom bach are a mix of what Ed terms, “New Zealanders shouting themselves a nice weekend” to English, American and European travellers. “What guests tell us they most love is the setting,” says Penny. The favoured guest book description is ‘idyllic’. “And the peace and quiet, listening to the birds and the waves. We’re so tucked away and they can’t imagine there’d be something like this here.” Apart from five months when the Aitkens lived in The Point themselves while their neighbouring home, ‘Craigforth’, was repaired post-earthquake, it has always been a holiday rental, but they have dreams of retiring to it one day themselves. “We enjoy the simplicity of it,” says Ed. Having always lived in old farmhouses, he loves the clean lines, abundant light and well designed, simply defined spaces. And, naturally, those rammed earth walls.

friend of mind who works in Addington recently asked what has been happening in the central city as he doesn’t work there anymore and hardly goes in. I replied, “Heaps!” Now the holidays are here we have the opportunity to venture in from the suburbs and check out the progress. And there has been a significant amount. I certainly get the sense that the city has turned a corner with several major commercial and retail developments recently opened. Our city centre’s “anchor” Ballantynes, has, of course, traded almost continuously, reopening for business soon after the earthquakes. It is now undertaking a rebuild and refurbishment to create a new permanent store. Ballantynes has recently been joined by major developments including The Crossing, the ANZ and BNZ Centres with their fashion, food, jewellery and beauty retail tenants, as

Now the holidays are here we have the opportunity to venture in from the suburbs and check out the progress. And there has been a significant amount.

well as the restaurant and bar precinct at The Terrace. Each of these developments has architecture of merit and interesting outdoor spaces, be it laneways or small squares for public enjoyment and convenience. The centre of the BNZ development opens up to form a “hidden” public square linked through from Cashel Mall to Hereford Street. The colourful façades facing the square add an element of surprise, while contrasting with the building’s more austere black and white street frontages. This internal square is a great way to get better use out of our (relatively) large city blocks. While building owners may lose rentable building space, much of this area is of less retail value because of its distance from the street. However, a connected public opening in the middle of the site creates more shopfronts, which of course can be

rented at a higher dollar value than a space far back into the depths of a building. This is a common theme in all of the abovementioned developments, although the ANZ Centre does this via a covered atrium space. The central square is a proven successful city form in Christchurch. Think of the quads in the Arts Centre, the central court of the old provincial council buildings, or even the University of Canterbury. The open square allows sun in, protection from the easterly wind and a communal sense of enclosure. The new central city developments have brought with them to Christchurch new retail brands not available in the suburbs. The Cashel Mall shopping precinct is once again true competition for the suburban malls, which have been taking business away from the central city long before the earthquakes. And businesses that were icons of the inner city, such as Scorpio Books and Kennett

Crafted Jewels, are moving back into town. For me, the most anticipated development has been Antony Gough’s “The Terrace”, due to open early 2018. Before the earthquakes this was a very successful precinct of bars and restaurants. It had all of the right ingredients: CBD location, river views, and sheltered from the easterly with north‑west sun. It is no longer just “a strip”, but incorporates a series of laneways between interesting architecture leading into a sheltered central square. Brilliant! While these developments congregate around Cashel Mall, our main central city shopping hub, there are plenty of other pockets of activity in the CBD. Linking all of these and filling in the gaps will be the final touches, and perhaps the most difficult to achieve. But this will eventually happen, and when it does, the Christchurch CBD will feel like an integrated town centre again, only better than before.

This type of technology has seen Amazon selling its own ‘smartlock’, which enables purchasers to authorise the entry of courier drivers into their home, to deliver their parcels and avoid either waiting around or that annoying (yet helpful) calling card. This service hasn’t reached our shores yet, and is only available to Amazon’s Prime members, but it could be no more than a matter of time.

Planting at this time of year induces heat stroke on both the garden and the gardener. Craig Wilson highlights plants that will forgive you for planting them in the heat, and ways to ensure they survive.

I

f I reminisce on growing up in Christchurch, a key memory was playing outside on summer days that seemed to go on forever. Backyard cricket, swing-ball and running under the garden sprinkler on hot days…. This year the summer would be up there with the best of them, with great weather to get about and enjoy the outdoors. The flipside of a classic summer in Canterbury is the typically low rainfall – and again this summer is no exception. During November we had the lowest rainfall recorded for more than 150 years. Our environment’s low rainfall can have a big influence on the gardens we choose to plant. An establishing trend in garden design is to utilise drought-tolerant planting species. This simply means planting species that, when established, will require less water than others to survive. Often New Zealand natives and Australian natives will fall into this category. It makes sense to consider this in your garden as drought-tolerant plantings will end up using less

water, which can only be a good thing for our precious and pressured water resource. Drought-tolerant plants are often characterised by a silver/green foliage colour. For example the New Zealand natives Brachyglottis, Pachystegia, and Olearia, all well suited to sunny, dry Canterbury conditions. Many of our native grasses are accustomed to surviving prolonged dry spells once they are established, too. Even with drought-tolerant species, if you are undertaking a planting project over the summer, it will be critical to put a good irrigation programme in place to ensure the survival of your plants. As we move through summer the soil water content can ‘bottom out’ and soil temperatures can get comparatively high. Here’s a good planting tip: make sure you hydrate the rootball of any plant well prior to digging it into the ground. The best way to ensure you’ve done this thoroughly is to dunk the rootball into a full bucket of water for a minute or two or until the bubbling has stopped – i.e. when the larger soil air pockets are saturated. Also, wet the planting hole for a few seconds to prepare the soil to receive the new plant. The freshly exposed plant roots won’t be burned by hot dry soil. If it’s at all possible, some landscapers would even suggest holding off on planting until March or April when there’s a higher chance of rain and the ground temperature has started to drop. Unless, of course, you enjoy the calm and relaxation of a whip around your property with the garden hose at the end of a summer’s day.

Sculptor Matthew Williams invites the viewer to look through his eyes, providing clues to his artwork through title, form and material. Words Anne Hudson

very year I look forward to seeing new work of Matthew Williams. In fact, I purchased Cognisant in 2016 and enjoy its presence in my garden. There is some debate as to how a title can influence one’s viewing of an artwork and this is true for the work of Matthew Williams. The title cannot be considered separately, it invites the viewer into the artist’s discourse. ‘Cognisant’ means to have knowledge or be aware of something. This work seems a classic modernist shape reminiscent of works by Barbara Hepworth. The simple oval forged in bronze neatly balanced on a concrete plinth feels familiar. We are cognisant of its classic form and our memory works to

reinforce that; such a clever work. The title made me look at the work in a fresh way. Another work titled Conundrum led me to ask Williams if he is interested in mathematical puzzles. This kinetic piece; a large cube with circles cut out of each facet, catches the viewer’s attention and the title makes us question what exactly the conundrum or puzzle is. How do these shapes revolve around one another? How does it balance and spin? Williams says he has worked with architects and designers in the past and as a result has an understanding of the impact of mathematics on design and building. These principles carry over into his sculpture and are manipulated to create something unique. Williams works in wood, metal and stone. He does not favour one medium over another but likes to allow the material and process to have its own life. However, his work portrays a clear intention. The forms are graceful and balanced; they are not that of a wild expressionist. He works within the constraints of the material and within his own personal design framework. The result is well executed and aesthetically pleasing pieces you know will withstand the rigours of life either inside or in the garden. From working

with wood in his father’s workshop, to the architectural design studio of Zaha Hadid in London, making work for sheiks and fantasy hotels in Dubai, to his studio and foundry here in Christchurch, Williams brings a wealth of skill and ability to his work. On arriving in New Zealand he learnt the practice of investment foundry and now runs a foundry in Phillipstown, Christchurch, where he creates not only his own work but also that of other artists, such as Anneke Bester, who creates beautifully balanced figures with long limbs that entrance us as they pivot on Williams’s concrete pedestals. The form, material and title work together in an intellectual way. Williams forces us to consider what he is trying to say or prove. We are invited to spin the work, push it, come close, stand far away – even go away and look up the dictionary. It is this interactive appeal that attracts me to his work and makes me look forward to seeing what he might come up with next. Williams’ work is held in collections throughout New Zealand and indeed the world. He lives and works in Christchurch and exhibits annually at Art in a Garden, Flaxmere, Hawarden.

It’s a case of Just Auckland For Art with two remarkable international shows visiting only our big city cousin. A collection of 80 original pieces by one of the most mysterious and talked-about artists in modern history, Banksy, opens on 5 January at the Aotea Centre. The street artist keeps his identity secret but his work is known to millions around the world, like the controversial Laugh Now – a famous graffiti piece that depicts a monkey with a sign hanging from his neck with the words: ‘Laugh now, but one day we’ll be in charge.’ And Pop-up Globe Theatre Company, travelling with the world’s first full-scale temporary working replica of the historic second Globe Theatre, returns to Ellerslie Racecourse. Experience Shakespearean classics in the Jacobean arena for which they were written. On the bill are Julius Caesar, Midsummer Night’s Dream, The Merchant of Venice, Macbeth or The Comedy of Errors. Might be time to visit the relatives. The Art of Banksy until 6 February. Pop-up Globe pops down 1 April.

SUNSCREEN

Tracey Beeby discusses a few common sunscreen concerns to ensure we are adequately protected this summer. Does sunscreen go on before or after moisturiser? And can you re-apply sunscreen when wearing makeup? Sunscreen should always be the final application prior to the use of makeup. Always allow a minute or two for the sunscreen to penetrate through the upper layers of the skin before makeup application. Sunscreen can be applied over makeup, but, in an ideal world, it should be applied to a clean skin (though not everyone is prepared to cleanse their skin and reapply makeup when in the sun for longer periods of time). Remember to reapply every two hours when in the sun and apply the correct amount of sunscreen, which is half a teaspoon for the face neck and ears. How can we stop brown spots, freckles and pigmentation becoming more prominent in summer? Often it is the heat of summer that draws pigment to the surface, so trying to avoid excessive heat and the sun, as well as protecting the skin with a broad spectrum SPF50+ on a daily basis, will prevent hyperpigmentation concerns from getting worse. There are some treatments available in clinic and homecare products that will help to treat these conditions, so it is advisable to seek advice from your clinician for the most suitable treatment available.

SPF and Broad Spectrum; what do these terms really mean and what should we be looking for in a daily sunscreen? Sun Protection Factor (SPF) is a worldwide standard measure of protection of the skin from predominantly UVB rays. Broad spectrum is the measurement of a sunscreen’s effectiveness against UVA rays. Broad spectrum sunscreens are designed to protect against both UVB and UVA rays. A conventional sunscreen that has an SPF rating only and does not mention the term “broad spectrum” may block very little UVA radiation relative to the SPF it claims. It is important to always look for a sunscreen that has SPF as a primary claim protecting against both UVA and UVB rays providing optimum protection from the damaging effects they have on our skin. How often should we reapply sunscreen when out in the sun all day? Sunscreen should be reapplied every two hours or following swimming. Apply at least a teaspoon for each limb, front and back of the body and half a teaspoon for the face, neck and ears. You should apply one cupped adult hand (30 to 40ml) of sunscreen for an adult body. A former salon owner, Tracey Beeby is the Global Education Ambassador for Australian brand Ultraceuticals.

Some sunscreen manufacturers are distributing products that don’t deliver on promises, while others contain harmful ingredients. Here are some key points to consider before your next purchase. CHECK THE INGREDIENTS: leave on the shelf anything that contains paraben preservatives, oxybenzone, octinoxate, retinyl palmitate (vitamin A palmitate), synthetic fragrances, para-aminobenzoic acid (PABA) and methylisothiazolinone. MINERAL VS CHEMICAL: Containing ingredients such as zinc oxide or titanium dioxide, mineral sunscreens provide a physical barrier on top of the skin, while chemical products (with synthetic ingredients) are absorbed into the skin. Mineral sunscreens are more suitable for sensitive skin types. SPRAY-FREE IS NOT RISK-FREE: While zinc oxide and titanium dioxide are recommended ingredients, inhaling them as nanoparticles is not. Despite the ease of application, it has been suggested that children, especially, are best with lotions. Please note: As Kathy Fields, M.D., an assistant clinical professor of dermatology at the University of California at San Francisco, told Women’s Health, “No one is walking around with sunscreen-induced cancer, but the sun is recognised by the FDA as a known carcinogen.” Always slip, slop and slap, but also make an educated choice when choosing what you put on your skin.

Put your best face forward in 2018 by making sure your haircut brings out your best features. Words Gilbert Wealleans

ith Yuletide past and the holiday memories fast fading, the time is ripe to talk to the ‘man in the mirror’, as the late Michael Jackson put it. If the looking glass presents a casualty of festive excess and selfneglect wearing the various badges of shame: a sinister blue chin, scalp looking like a chewed hedgehog corpse and neck hair resembling Western Front barbed wire circa 1917, it is high time for a tonsorial spruce up. In achieving the perfect haircut there are two key factors: communication and face shape. Talk to your barber! Don’t just park yourself in the chair expecting him or her to read your mind. The result may be grim! Discuss your requirements and show a picture of styles you like, to determine which suits best based on the shape of your face. ROUND: Almost as wide as tall, the round jawline and cheekbones benefit from styles square or higher on top and at the front but less full at the sides. A side/off-centre parting helps break up the roundness as will waves or a cowlick. Consider a ’50s pompadour. Avoid full, round and sticking out styles, these can make a round countenance resemble a church sunburst monstrance (another word for your Scrabble lexicon!). SQUARE: As with round, square works best with shorter, leaner sides with the top higher and longer. Keep things neatly trimmed and

clean around the ears as too much fullness covering the lugs could make your face look too wide, or as if you are wearing a WW2 German helmet! OVAL: Trumpeted as the ideal face shape, oval can wear almost any style. Longer than wide and combining elements of both round and square faces, this pleasantly egg-shaped dial is both strong and youthful due to the absence of pronounced angularity. Wear your thatch as you desire, you fortunate fellows. LONG: Considerably longer than wide, balance is essential for this face, therefore a layered cut masking the forehead hairline compliments well, as do styles longer at the sides and shorter on top. If you have a beard, don’t let it grow too long or your face may end up resembling a violin case. Remedy this with a good shave (refer Style October 2017). TRIANGULAR: Wide temples and cheekbones above a tapering jaw and chin, need a style that narrows the forehead to balance the face. Offset side partings and hair swept to the side will usually do the trick. DIAMOND: A complex shape with wide cheekbones placed between a narrow, often slightly conical crown and tapering jaw and chin. Longer cuts or “messy” styles can work for this face.

SETTING GOALS YOU CAN KEEP Elly McGuinness highlights goal setting principles that will help make 2018 a year of change.

T

he new year often brings with it a desire to revisit health and fitness goals and set up a plan for a great year ahead. Goals should be SMART: specific, measurable, achievable, relevant and time-bound, to help ensure they clearly state what you want. Set your SMART goals, and then also make sure you cover off the following points. Then you can dive into your plan towards a fitter and healthy you in 2018! UNDERSTAND YOUR ‘WHY’ Why are your goals important to you? Perhaps your goal is to lose 5kg by the middle of the year, and then maintain that weight for the rest of the year. So, ask yourself why that is important, and then ask yourself a few more times to get to the real, deep reason behind that goal.

With a weight-loss goal, you might initially say you want to fit back into your old clothes. Okay, so ask yourself why that is important. Soon enough you will get to the deep emotional drivers behind your goal of losing weight. Remind yourself of these often throughout the year. These reasons will either be deep-seated pain you want to avoid or pleasure you want to seek. They’re the factors that will really drive you forward to achieve your goal. MAKE THEM POSITIVE Check your goals are written in positive language. The deep reason you want to achieve them might be to avoid something negative. However, when you write them down, make sure they explain what you want, rather than what you don’t want.

For example, a negatively-stated goal could be something like, “I don’t want to get any injuries during this year’s netball season.” Change it to be a positive goal by saying, “I will work on my fitness, balance and flexibility to ensure I stay injury-free throughout this year’s netball season.” HELP THEM STICK Write down your goals and their importance regularly in a journal so you are continually reminded of what you want to achieve. Make yourself a ‘vision board’ – a visual representation of your goals. Fill this with quotes and pictures that will inspire you. Get some accountability. Let friends and family know what you want to achieve so they can help support you along the way.

EYE APPEAL The new C3 embodies Citroën’s legendary avant-garde design. Words Ross Kiddie

was wandering through the local mall the other day, after dealing with the supermarket shopping list my wife had presented me with. As I exited towards the car park I took notice of the display car inside, one of several placed there by Armstrong Motor Group as a marketing tool. I took special notice of that car, it didn’t just stand out for its presence, it was also the car I was soon to drive, a Citroën C3, the subject of this evaluation. The new C3 is just that, totally new with a fresh shape. However, the mechanicals are those used elsewhere throughout the Citroën/Peugeot line-ups, but the driveline has been refreshed for continued efficiency and performance. Interestingly, the car in the mall didn’t have the Airbump side panel technology that has made some Citroën models a standout in terms of eye appeal. The panels are designed not so much to add visual flair but to protect the bodywork when parked in close confines. That technology was first seen here in Citroën’s Cactus and I’m pleased it is being included on other models within the company’s line-up; it is something I think is a worthy inclusion, anything to protect your investment has to be a good thing. Elsewhere, the concept of C3 has certainly remained intact. It is still the cheeky, five-door hatchback that has commanded good sales globally. In New Zealand it has been a solid performer for the Citroën importers and the new design won’t do sales any harm at all. Considering the importance of the C3 in our market, I was asked to borrow Armstrong’s demonstrator. Normally, I wouldn’t take a demo car away from the dealership for fear that a customer may miss out on a drive that

could result in a sale. That being the case, I had only a day and a bit with the newcomer, but that was enough to gauge how well Citroën has done with the C3. It is a fine car and one which carries much of the Citroën way of manufacture – avant-garde, a little unusual, but with a whole heap of charm. Powering the C3 is a fabulous three-cylinder engine which displaces just 1199cc, it has been widely-acclaimed, winning the world’s best engine award for the last three years. Deservedly so, the wee 1.2-litre unit punches well above is weight, it is turbocharged and is rated with 81kW and 205Nm power outputs. Drive is channelled through a six-speed automatic gearbox. The only transmission available in New Zealand, the distributors wouldn’t have it any other way either – while manual gearbox cars are still trendy in Europe, they don’t sell here. All that aside, the automatic works fine. It isn’t the smoothest shifting transmission I’ve driven, but it is robust and does everything like it should. The ratios are well structured so that economy and performance go hand in hand. The C3 will reach 100km/h from a standstill in 10.5sec and will complete a highway overtake – 80km/h to 120km/h – in 7sec. However, the best figures are those of its economy, it is a mammoth fuel miser. Citroën rates it with a combined cycle average of 4.9-litres per 100km (57mpg). At 100km/h it sips fuel instantaneously at the rate of just 3.8l/100km (72mpg) at 100km/h in sixth gear, the engine turning over quite relaxed at 2000rpm. That doesn’t mean the engine isn’t ready to perform, the beauty of the modern turbocharger is its ability to provide substantial power low in the rev band – 5500rpm and just

1500rpm for torque – as a result, it responds willingly to throttle pressure. On the open road, the C3 cruises with just a hint of the harmonics normally associated with the three-pot design. I’ve made no secret of my desire for that configuration and it is a real gem with its response and characteristics that are part of the catalyst that promotes tidy handling manners. Riding on quiet-riding Michelin tyres (205/55 x 16in), the C3 has controlled grip and purposeful balance. For interest’s sake, the high-grade model gets wheels an inch larger in diameter. Even without low profile rubber, the C3 steers delightfully and, with its height of well under 1.5m, there is little weight transition, body balance stays even and occupants are treated to

a ride/handling balance that you could expect only from Citroën. I remember well the hydro-pneumatic designs in cars of previous generations, and I can safely say, that even with far more simplistic technology, today’s ride from any Citroën model easily replicates that fabulous float-onfluid feeling. At $24,990, or $26,990 for the high-spec version, the C3 represents an easy entry point into the brand. It is loaded with safety technologies, and items for comfort and convenience. Citroën in New Zealand has recently undergone a major restructure in the way it is distributed, that can only mean a higher profile and with fine cars like the C3 a boost in sales is a certainty.

What have you enjoyed most about setting up the three dining areas at Crowne Plaza? Seeing all my own concepts and ideas evolve from scratch and witnessing the new menus coming to life. We’re experiencing a diverse audience of locals, visitors and guests coming in at different times of the day; it’s good to see the spaces have rhythm. How is Market Place different from your usual hotel restaurant? Market Place has a lot of local supporters, we are proud to say it’s humming and guests appreciate all the thought that has gone into its contemporary design and Market Place inspired menu. It’s also got a strong brand with the connection to the history of Victoria Square, and its use of local suppliers. What are your must-have ingredients? It’s hard to narrow it down, we use over 700 ingredients daily in our hotel kitchen. We use a lot of seasonal produce to provide variation in the menu especially with ‘Trust the Chef’.You can never go wrong with premium grade olive oil – we use Robinsons Bay from local Banks Peninsula. What kitchen tool could you not be without? I swear by my own chef’s knife, which I have had ever since I started cooking at the age of 15. What’s something in your career that you wish you had known sooner? Getting the team involved from the beginning. It’s important to have your kitchen on board with the creative process, it creates a better result and an even more passionate team.

he small white projectile flew like a cannonball across the field, pursued by a squadron of riders wielding their mallets like sabres in a manner reminiscent of a Napoleonic cavalry charge. Their snorting mounts thundered in the kicked up dust swirling in the dry Canterbury wind. Seeking relief from the assault of the blowtorch high noon, guests lounged in pre-prandial jollity within the giant marquee. The vibrant auction for Ronald McDonald House South Island took the excitement to a level eclipsed only by the action on the lawn, where the Stella Artois International Polo saw NZ fight it out with longtime rivals Australia.

here was a lot of bleating in Victoria Street on one particular evening recently! The voice doing so was raised in neither dispute nor distress but in greeting to those patrons attending the grand opening of The Good Goat Gastro Pub, the namesake of which possessed that loud vocal capability. Perched on the corner and commanding superb views of the burgeoning city centre, the Good Goat soon filled up with invited guests, their faces kissed by the late afternoon light streaming in through the generous windows. Culinary treasures flowed from the kitchen, delighting all whilst outside the best goat of all stole the show.

hen you come to the end of a perfect day, the place to end up is at the beginning of a perfect party and, whilst the pinnacle of ultimate quality is abstract and unattainable, the reception at Workshop was pretty close. Hospitality flowed in greeting like the nectar that satiates the bee, as along Colombo Street invitees swarmed to the hive of couture. The air inside was sweet with the joy of society and honeyed with the flavour of high fashion. The opening of Workshop, newly installed at The Crossing, could not have been grander, neither in size, nor in welcome.

hat nemesis of stiletto heels, a finely manicured lawn, was steadily filling up with people who, clutching glasses in hand mingled upon the green cushioningly cool underfoot velvet. The garden at St George’s Hospital was dressed for a party as were the guests basking in the mellow sun of the retiring afternoon. Wrapped in the elegance of a Noel Coward play, the Christmas garden party meandered along with waiters deftly snaking through the slalom of staff, supporters and friends, presenting tempting platters to all. The scent of roses borne on the summer evening air painted a fragrant picture for later lingering recollection.

arvellous machines which once ruled the skies to the awe of the earthbound who gazed upwards in wonder, sat silent now, retired from their lofty kingdom to be sentinels in the memorial hall of courage. The courage also of those desperate for usually unobtainable medical help was the motivation behind the evening to enable the Canterbury Charity Hospital to make such medicine attainable. As the cabaret spun a web of wonder around the night of fun and frivolity, in the hearts of the many attending, sat the real spirit of the event and forthcoming season, that of service to others.
