Graffiti removal planned for heritage monument BY BRIDGET RUTHERFORD Graffiti covering a heritage monument in Woolston could soon be removed. The Woolston Borough Monument, which sits on the corner of Ferry Rd and Richardson Tce, has been a target for taggers in the last couple of years. It is a heritage item and because it is made of Oamaru stone, the graffiti is difficult to get off without damaging the stone. The city council is trialling ways to get rid of the graffiti without deteriorating the stone.

Hagley-Ferrymead Community Board chairwoman Sara Templeton said any work to a heritage item needed to get consent, and it was going through that process now. She said the city council was trialling two options before attempting them on the monument. One was poultice application, which involves applying a paste to the graffiti and covering it with a plastic sheet to delay evaporation and pull the stain out of the stone. The other was through mechanical means, such as dry or wet blasting.

The city council would put a sign up to let people know what was happening, she said. The monument was put on the site to commemorate Woolston becoming a borough on July 27, 1893. Ms Templeton said in the past graffiti had been left to fade with sunlight, but the previous tags had encouraged more, and now they would not fade. She said it had got worse in the last six months. When the graffiti was removed the city council planned to put a barrier around the monument to stop further damage, she said.

IN ACTION: Hillmorton High School put on its production, A Midsummer Night’s Dream, last week. Rykah Haddaway played Pyramus, Levi Fridd was The Wall, Daniel Blue played Quince and Dion Thornton was Thisbe. The production, which was on Monday and Tuesday nights, followed on from a successful entry in the Sheilah Winn Shakespeare competition last year where a number of the students were involved and performed an extract from the play in the finals in Wellington. Deputy principal Eleanor Sim said many in the audience enjoyed the age-old humour of the Shakespearean comedy. • More photos, page 7

OUR JERRY LEE a true survivor This is a great story of one very gutsy, tough, utterly loveable German Shepherd pup called “ Jerry Lee”. At just 17 months of age we have seen Jerry Lee over 30 times since his first visit for pup vaccinations. Luckily for us he’s a big softy and has never put up a fight to all our palpating and needle pricking. Occasionally to get us back he rips out the IV catheter in his leg and looks quite pleased with himself. Jerry Lee first presented with weight loss and inappetance over a year ago as a pup. He just was never fussed on eating – no food really tickled his fancy and he was offered the best premium foods on the market and lots of variety. He wasn’t growing as he should have for his age and he often seemed really lethargic and lacking in energy. He had diarrhea and vomiting intermittently, salivating often, but what really concerned his owners was that as a pup he just didn’t have the energy he should of had. He has been blood tested many times, xrays have been taken of his gut and Catherine has performed ultrasounds. There isn’t many tests Jerry lee hasn’t had. No abnormalities were really detected but we all knew he wasn’t right. Many times we treated Jerry Lee with lower fat intestinal moist food, occasional antibiotics, drugs to help with nausea and vomiting, pain medications and we kept his worming up to date. He’d come right initially but before long we’d see him back just flat and listless and basically anorexic. He was a real worry to his owners and to us.

In his wee short life he’s had three anaesthetics and come through them brilliantly. Jerry Lee never complains and honestly is the perfect patient to treat. He’s been under the knife to be neutered, he then had an emergency dash to the afterhours clinic as he suddenly developed a twisted stomach and spleen. Then most

IN THOUGHT: Cashmere Primary School pupils Chris Watson (left), Joel Prince, Lewis Parker and Amos Doogue competed at the South Island Chess Competition held recently in Ashburton. The team came third. The pupils worked hard for their points against some tough competitors and enjoyed the day.

Bridge repairs start recently I performed exploratory surgery to inspect his stomach, small and large intestines all his abdominal organs, biopsying in particular many sections of stomach, bowel, pancreas and liver. This is where finally we got a diagnosis of Inflammatory Bowell Disease – aptly called Eosinophilic, Lymphoplasmacytic, diffuse IBD!!! He’s a true battler and at least we have a diagnosis now. Treatment is complicated, lengthy, costly and it really places an emotional strain on everyone in the family as its very hard seeing your loved pet (and a baby at that), go through at times pain and discomfort. To be hit with IBD as a young pup is very unlucky but Jerry Lee is so totally loved and adored by his family who would do anything for him. It would be fair to say his vet bills have been large and thanks to PetPlan Insurance, a massive financial burden has been lifted from Jerry Lee’s family. PetPlan are covering the vast majority of all his care and we are all praying we can get this nasty disease under control so Jerry Lee can finally enjoy life to the fullest!! Pet Insurance for your new pup or kitten is something worthy of a discussion. Most pet insurance companies will offer 4-6 weeks free cover initially for your new pup or kitten, which gives you time to look at all the insurance options. We don’t sell pet insurance but we give you information on all the pet insurance companies out there for you to investigate the best option for you. Some cover pre-existing conditions which is a bonus. It makes life simplier for us as your pets veterinarian as we are able to do the very best in care, diagnostics and treatment for your pet with the financial worry removed. For more information on Pet Insurance or Inflammatory Bowel disease be sure to give the clinic a call.

Earthquake repairs to the Malcolm Ave bridge will begin today. Work on the bridge in St Martins will take about two weeks, subject to weather and onsite conditions. The bridge suffered earthquake damage and needs to have cracks and damaged concrete underneath it repaired. Two-way traffic will be maintained throughout the works, but Downer workers

will need to return at a later date to re-seal the road, which will mean it will need to be closed to traffic. A date for its re-sealing has not been confirmed yet, but those in the area will be notified closer to the time. There will be no parking around the work site, on Waimea Tce and Hunter Tce during the works.

Councillors back plea to stop bank closures BY BRIDGET RUTHERFORD

City councillors have thrown their support behind a plea to stop the closure of Woolston’s only two banks. Hagley-Ferrymead Community Board chairwoman Sara Templeton spoke before the councillors last week asking them to take a stance of the plans. New Zealand Post announced in July it would close the Woolston PostShop and Kiwibank, and expand in Ferrymead instead. Postal services will be run from another business, but Kiwibank will be removed. ANZ followed suit, leaving residents and businesses outraged they will be left with no banking services within walking distance. The community board has already written to the chief executives of the New Zealand Post Group and the minister of state owned enterprises opposing the closures. The city council will now do

the same, as well as the chief executive of ANZ. City councillor Yani Johanson said it was important for the city council to play a role. “The proposal is to take away a facility where people can walk to, to put it into Ferrymead which is an area where nearly everyone has to drive to.” City councillor Andrew Turner said a post office was not just a place where you go and buy stamps, it was often the heart of a community. “This is about communities’ ability to do things within the community, and to be sustainable as a community.” City councillor Paul Lonsdale urged the councillors to vote to write to both banks. “To plead to them that they are dealing with a post-earthquake environment, we need to see that investment back in those smaller communities to ensure that we actually get the rebuild that we want to see for the future.” The vote was unanimous.

▌IN ▌ BRIEF New deputy principal

St Mark’s School, Opawa, has appointed Adrian Rennie as its new deputy principal. The appointment comes seven months after former principal Paul Mathews and deputy Keith Moorfield resigned and Christine Nijdam was appointed commissioner, with Trevor Beaton as acting principal. Mr Rennie will take up his role at the start of term four.

Road closures

The intersection of Woodbridge Rd and Colombo St, Cashmere, will be closed to traffic from today for McConnell Dowell workers to repair the stormwater network. The work is expected to take about a month to do. There may be temporary parking restrictions and reductions in lane widths during the works. Part of Simeon St, Spreydon, remains closed until Friday while workers repair the earthquake-damaged road. The closure is between Coronation St and Sydney Pl. Detours are in place and there is no parking around the work site. Smith St, Woolston, between Bray St and Ferry Rd will also be closed until October, traffic can use Mackworth St instead. BUDDING GARDENER: Ruby Ryan, 3, of Kidsfirst Kindergarten Wales St, Halswell, plants her sunflower seedling as part of this year’s Daltons Sunflowers in Kindergartens project. The children plant their seedlings and care for them until December 9 when they are judged. Prizes will be up for grabs for the kindergarten that grows the tallest sunflower, and the sunflower with the widest head. More than 12,800 budding pre-school gardeners from around the country will be taking part.

Tree submissions

The public has until today to have its say on the planting of new trees in Somerfield Park and Sydenham Cemetery. The city council wants to know what sort of trees the community wants to be planted. Submissions can be made on the city council website and will close today.

Practical, creative bus stops aim of artist BY BRIDGET RUTHERFORD A Heathcote Valley man is on a mission to beautify and improve bus stops in the area. Flip Leijten was inspired to take on the challenge following the February 2011 earthquake when the community held a meeting to discuss ways to help residents recover. The semi-retired fabrication and welding tutor raised the idea to help improve both the look of stops, but also the conditions bus users face when waiting. “I have the real desire to improve bus stops so people who wait are sheltered from winds and rain, can sit. I believe this will result in more people using the Christchurch public transport system.” Following the meeting, a community working bee was set up, and all the stops in the area were surveyed. There were 25 stops, three were sheltered, nine had seats and the remainder were just stops on a grassy spot or concrete. Mr Leijten often saw people waiting for the bus fully exposed to rain and wind. “You can’t help feeling sorry

PHOTO: MARTIN HUNTER for those out there while you drive by in your car, in particular students going to school or elderly. It’s not a good look in winter.” Residents then showed city council staff the results of the survey, and asked to decorate some of the stops, and worked to have a shelter installed on Martindales Rd. A survey was then carried out with residents who owned the fences next to each bus stop. The first mural, on the corner of Bridle Path and Marsden

$85m LPC project nearing completion BY FRASER WALKER-PEARCE An $85 million project at Lyttelton Port of Christchurch is almost at its finish line. The last of 22 concrete pours were finished recently at Cashin Quay 2 wharf, meaning the massive $85 million project is almost at its end. The entire wharf is reported to be around 230m long, including a large storage area for containers, called the wharf ’s ‘backland’. The backland is a storage space which will allow for up to 700 containers, and will increase the

CLOSER: The rebuild of earthquake-damaged Cashin Quay 2 wharf is nearing completion. port’s productivity and efficiency. The finish line is also in sight for the LPC’s newest project, a

27ha storage space in Rolleston, called MidlandPort. The new space shows that LPC aims to ease the congestion of heavy trucks going through Christchurch, through its rail link from MidlandPort to Lyttelton Port, by early next year. MidlandPort will be put in service to help the increasing productivity from the Canterbury Plains and will help reduce congestion on roading networks. It provides a direct link to the 14 shipping lines and nine shipping services that call at the port.

Delay in lighting up traffic signals The Ferrymead Bridge traffic signals will not be switched on until later this month due to “technical difficulties”. The traffic signals were meant to be live by the end of August but the city council has revised the date to September 14. The intersection, which the city council says will have about 1600 vehicles pass through daily, has traffic signals installed on Main Rd, Bridle Path Rd with a give way signal at the bottom of St Andrews Hill Rd. City council Ferrymead Bridge

Replacement Project chairman John Mackie said there had been unexpected technical difficulties linking the new signals to the citywide system. “The safety of road users is our prime focus, so this work is essential,” he said. Hagley-Ferrymead Community Board chairwoman Sara Templeton said she had not been told about the delay. She said it was “frustrating”, but people in Christchurch were very patient when it came to delays.

PROGRESS: Consent for the St Martins Opawa Toy Library building, formerly the Beckenham Library, is expected to be granted next month.

Repairs to community facilities on track BY BRIDGET RUTHERFORD Plans to repair and rebuild community facilities in St Martins are on track. Concept plans for the St Martins Community Facility, which is to be built on the corner of Wades Ave and Wilsons Rd, are to be presented to the Spreydon-Heathcote Community Board on Friday. The former St Martins Public Library on the same site was demolished after the earthquakes. A geotechnical investigation has found the soils on the site are poor grade, similar to TC3. This could mean the foundation costs increase, and may impact the scale of the building. City council community facilities unit manager Darren Moses said this would mean specific geotechnical input is required to produce a foundation design. But he said the design would be

completed before Christmas and there would be no delays. The current budget for the entire project is $1.1m, and is expected to be completed by mid 2016, he said. Meanwhile, the St Martins Opawa Toy Library, on Sandwich Rd in Beckenham, is currently going through the consenting stage for its repairs. The city council had hoped the repairs would be completed by the end of the year, but acknowledged it was ambitious. Mr Moses said consent is expected to be granted next month, but the targeted opening date would be confirmed once that had been done. “The budget for the strengthening is $400,000.” The building was given a second lease of life after a decision to demolish it in 2013 was revoked by the city council because of its heritage looking exterior.

Opawa pupils on an outdoor adventure

EXPERIENCE: A group of 38 year 6 pupils from Ōpāwa School went on the TranzAlpine train to Arthurs Pass recently. The group stayed at the Outdoor Education Centre for two nights and enjoyed walking and working as a team and a range of other activities. The highlights of the trip were the spectacular views, especially from the top of Bealey Spur, the sensory trail, which involved feeling your way through a trail while blind folded, and the observation platform on the train – even though it was chilly.

COMMUNITY ART: St Anne’s Catholic School pupils Kristyl, Samantha, Taurean and Jamal are helping to transform the former Woolston Library site by designing and decorating a large pot to go on the site. The pot will be placed at the entrance of the Ferry Rd site. The Woolston Library building was badly damaged in the earthquakes and demolished shortly after the February 2011 earthquake. Workshops were held and the community decided to turn the site into a transitional library and green space, which is being created now.

Experiencing Cashmere hospitality

TEAM: Students in the Protocol team (standing) Chelsea Corkindale, Ineke Hemstra, Madi Michelle, Maddie Oates, Mikhala Jordan, Kate Gant, Kelsea Hooper, Taylor Brown. Sitting: Louis Yeki, Jack Wilson, Matthew Shepherd. PIT STOP: Zoe Howman, Mel Cook, Amber Skye Jewell, Joseph Davidson-Labout, Enzo Murray and Kaito Ito take a break on their visit to Arthurs Pass.

WELCOME: Cashmere High School hospitality student Matthew Shepherd greets guests as they come into Protocol Bar and Restaurant as part of the school’s hospitality night last week. The school’s year 12 and 13 students are able to get front of house experience at the restaurant to get NCEA Level 2 credits. The restaurant provided one of the function rooms for the night, and two staff members guided the students while the head chef prepared a three-course meal for family and friends who attended.

Pupils have been working on music, dance and visual art throughout the term, ending with various presentations and exhibitions throughout last week. On Wednesday night the year 7 and 8 team presented Totara’s Got Talent, with 13 acts, as well as class items. It was a great night of dance, singing, music and even some drama.

Daylight saving a good time to check your smoke alarms BY MARK THOMAS – FIRE RISK MANAGEMENT Frosts, snow on the Port Hills, cold southerlies all belie the fact that we are in spring. In fact, on the 27th daylight saving will start again. That’s just a fortnight away so right now is a good time to check out the specials on batteries at local supermarkets, in preparation to giving your smoke alarms a treat on the day and replacing the batteries. NEW LOCATION ADVERT.pdf 1 I’m sure there will be some

advertising from us about this but this is an eyes up that it is not far away. Saturday night saw some easy chairs set on fire at the Sign of the Bellbird on the Port Hills. The fire spread into the roof of this structure and Governors Bay fire crew spent ages trying to dismantle the roof, which was an ancient and intricate design, to put the fire out. More mindless vandalism casually destroying something that has 1/05/2014 11:51:35 a.m. been with us for 100 years. Those responsible sure make it easy to

dislike them. A householder in Rasen Place, Linwood, did the right thing when a fire started in her oven on Saturday afternoon. She called us and didn’t panic. People tend to open the door of the oven but our lady was rewarded for actually doing nothing as she could see the fire diminishing through the glass until it was out when our crew arrived. That’s a good result. If she’d opened it? At the very least the fire crew would have had work to do.

▌READER’S ▌ LETTER Last week the Southern View asked readers if there has been enough information provided for those living on potentially contaminated land in the Spreydon-Heathcote ward. Gary Knight, Hoon Hay: The proposed advisory group amalgamation between Spreydon-Heathcote Community Board and Environment Canterbury to help property owners with possible contaminated land, while commendable, is devoid of essential data for these residents. Definition of contaminated land under section 2 of the Resource Management Act, covering hazardous substances not used, stored or disposed of safely, identifies the following areas: Extreme pesticide use inclusive of agrichemical

9

sources, gas and coal production synonymous with old gasworks, petroleum products, historic mining, timber treatment and sheep dips. All having at some stage leeched into soil or dispersal into the atmosphere, are relevant factors of vital importance for those deemed to have contaminated soil. This additional data would allow them to ascertain and reappraise their land status with relativity to the above. These factors have not been forthcoming for many. Apart from the detrimental effect from exposure to any of these, factors of concern would be corrosion, demeaning to building structures, and reduction in land value through parochial and bureaucratic viewpoints by many now resultant in a $5000 fee for closure on the degree of their property contamination.

Music is taught as part of the performing arts curriculum in all classrooms but extra opportunities exist for students to learn music and to participate in our choir, orchestra, rock band and other music groups. We are also able to arrange music instrument tutors so our students are able to learn a variety of instruments if they are interested. We currently have students learning: cello; violin; piano; ukulele; guitar; flute; saxophone; clarinet and drums. Those students who learn are then invited to join and perform in our orchestra, string ensemble and rock band.

Osteopaths spring to the rescue

A

s Spring comes along, many of us feel compelled to spring into action….dig the garden, clean up the house - inside and out, climb ladders to clean out guttering, tidy backyards, trim hedges etc. This sudden burst of physical activity, after a winter spent in semi-hibernation, can often cause pain and discomfort in different parts of the body, stopping us in our tracks. However, help is at hand from the osteopaths at Osteopaths on Ensors & Wairakei, where our UK trained professionals can bring relief, usually in just a few sessions. “There’s a misconception that osteopathy is only about bones and backs”, says osteopath Christina Creek, “but it can help with shoulder, hip, ankle problems and indeed any other musculoskeletal pain or indeed visceral pain, ie other internal problem.” “We don’t just treat the problem area,” Christina continues, “we look for the cause of the problem and treat that first.” Christina trained in the UK at the European School of Osteopathy, graduating in 1993, then went on to study paediatric

pain

osteopathy in Melbourne, graduating in 1999. Living in NZ since 1993, she launched the Ensors Clinic in 1995 and the Wairakei Clinic in 2004 & both have been busy ever since. “People with sporting injuries, people suffering from migraines or difficulty sleeping, are all able to be given some relief ”, says Christina, “with our gentle hands-on osteopathic techniques.” All osteopaths have undergone comprehensive 4-5 year training and are registered with the NZ Osteopathic Registration Council and ACC. So this Spring, if something ‘Oooooh--Aaaargh!’ happens to your body, pop in to Osteopaths on Ensors or Osteopaths On Wairakei and we will help put the spring back in your step!!! er incredible results really do speak for themselves because Dr Lan Xiao’s patients are happy to tell anyone and everyone just how amazing and how quickly the results of their treatment with her have been. One patient, who suffered from chronic pain and depression for 4 years and tried both conventional and alternative medicine, says that she felt great after just one session. She’s keen to spread the word, saying that “it feels like a pressure has been lifted from her whole body.” Another who suffered from chronic fatigue syndrome for many years used to struggle to find the energy to do her work. Dr. Lan gradually gave her her energy back. “It pulled me back from the brink … and I will be grateful forever,” she says. Acupuncture Without Needles stimulates particular points on the body, giving an instant release of energy and helps the body to heal itself. The treatment is not invasive or painful, and, as Dr. Lan explains, “the results are very quick and effective.” Her ideas are revolutionary and are captured in her book “Dr. Lan’s Reflexology Network.” In it, she explains that unlike many other practitioners, she has found that there are reflexology points across the entire body and not just in certain areas, and she believes that her successes are based on her wider understanding. Treatment offered for headaches, facial and jaw pain

Physical Sense Gym and Physio, located in Colombo Street Sydenham, focuses both on helping people stay physically fit and healthy, and helping people to overcome various health problems.

A

s physiotherapist Ietje van Stolk explains, when our muscles tighten this can refer pain to many of these areas around the face and head. Dehydration can be the catalyst for tightening the neck muscle (SCM), which causes pain in the ear, forehead and round the eye and jaw joint areas. Tightening of the temporalis muscle can refer pain to the teeth, which can be confusing when the person visits the dentist to have it seen to and the dentist

can’t find a reason for the recurring pain. Teeth grinding at night and teeth clenching during the day are also a major cause of muscle tightening. Physiotherapy treatment for these problems is based on deactivating the ‘trigger points’ through hands-on massage therapy to relax the muscles, which is the least invasive and a very effective form of treatment. Dry needling is another technique used for muscle relaxation, but is only used with the client’s consent,

Ietje says. “We release the muscles to give immediate relief, and at the same time work on the cause. For example, we have a feedback headband that is worn at night to help people to learn not to clench their teeth while they’re asleep. We also work on the client’s cervical or neck part of the spine, where overuse can cause muscles to tighten, creating pain.” Teaching self-management of stress is an important aspect of the clinic’s treatment as well as teaching breathing techniques, which go hand in hand with managing stress.

The gym is open to the public for regular exercise classes, including step and spin bike, while also offering specialised classes for people with ailments such diabetes, osteoporosis, vascular problems and those who face difficulties following a stroke. Physical Sense Gym and Physio is located at 300 Colombo Street, Sydenham. To enquire about specialised exercise classes or physiotherapy treatment, phone 377 2577 or visit www.triggerpoints.co.nz.
