Dave’s Desk

2009 has been a very exciting year in the Angus business. e obvious highlight would be the World Angus Forum in July. is event was staged to host the world, and it was a world class event held at a world class venue. It will no doubt go down in history as the best World Angus Forum to date. Congratulations to those who made it all possible, it was a huge undertaking.

Page 4

Winter Edition 2009*

e year was, as most have been for the past few years, very unpredictable. e commercial side of the business has been under pressure to say the least. In spite of all challenges, the sales seemed to have held up. Averages for the most part were in line with years past. We at Angus World are making some changes that we feel add to the magazine and the breed. Firstly, the magazine in it’s entirety will be posted online. e complete magazine online will give more exposure to the breed and our advertisers. It will be available for viewing at both www.angusworld.ca as well as with our affiliate www.everythingangus.com.

Angus World

Secondly, this issue we are launching what we call Champion’s Corner. It will appear on this page of the magazine and feature a personality involved in the business. It will be ‘Our salute to those who Champion Angus across the country and the world.’ We hope you’ll like it. Best of the season and all the best in the New Year!

Weights, Measures and Doses What Every Cattleman Should Know Grams, kilograms, ml, cc: what does it all mean? What cattleman hasn’t stood with medication in hand and wondered if he was helping or making things worse with a wrong dose. It really isn’t complicated, but it may seem that way to livestock producers who do not use these applications in everyday life. Let’s open the curtains and see if we can let some light in on the subject. The basic unit of volume in the metric system is the liter. It is slightly larger than a quart (US) 1.06 times the volume of a quart to be exact. Liters are commonly divided into milliliters, abbreviated ml. Each milliliter is equal in volume to a cube which is one centimeter wide, one centimeter long and one centimeter high. Thus one milliliter (ml) and one cubic centimeter (cc) express the same unit of volume and can be used interchangeably. There are 30 cc or ml in 1 fluid ounce. As every housewife know there are 6 teaspoons or 2 tablespoons in a fluid ounce, so there are 5 cc or ml in a teaspoon, or 15 cc or ml in a tablespoon. Volume Conversions U.S. 1 cup = 8 Fl oz 1 pint = 16 fl oz 1 qt = 32 fl oz

Metric 1 ml = 1 cc 1000 ml = 1 liter 1000 cc = 1 liter

The basic unit of weight in the metric system is the gram. One gram is defined as the weight of water that occupies one cc at the temperature at which ice starts to melt. There are 454 grams in one pound. 1,000 grams equals one kilogram, which is equal to 2.2 pounds. One thousandths of a gram equals one milligram. There are approximately 31 grams or 31,000 milligrams in an ounce. Weight Conversions 1000 grams = 1 kilogram 1000 grams = 1 kilogram 2.2 lb = 1 kilogram 1 lb = .45 kilogram 1 lb = 454 grams 1 oz = 31.1 grams Appropriate dosages of pharmaceuticals are often expressed in grams or milligrams per unit of body weight of the animal to be dosed. When medications are given, they are commonly measured in units of volume such as cc or fluid ounces. To determine the correct dose for an individual animal you need to know the concentration, which is the amount of drug Angus World

expressed in units of weight that will be present in each unit of volume of the product. For example, an antibiotic is packaged and distributed at a concentration of 200 milligrams per milliliter. The recommended dose is 9 milligrams per pound of body weight. How many cc would you give a 120 pound calf? 120 pounds times the 9 milligrams required for each pound of body weight equals 1080 milligrams required. Since we know that the concentration of the product is 200 mg/ml. We can divide 200 into the requirement of 1080 and find that we need 5.4 ml - or since they are the same, 5.4 cc. Dosages for oral medications are often expressed in fluid ounces rather than ml or cc. The same principles apply in that we need to know the amount of the drug required and the concentration of the product as supplied. Most over-the-counter drugs have dosing guidelines that are easy to interpret. Prescription drugs, however, may express the dosing guidelines in terms that are not so familiar, and drugs for off label usage will have no guidelines for that application, other than what your veterinarian provides. It may be helpful to know that a dosage level of 1 ml/kg of body weight is equal to 46 mg/100 lbs of body weighty. If dosage is expressed in units of volume, you can remember that 1 milliliter of cc/kg of body weight equals .46 milliliter or cc/pound of body weight. Dosage Conversions 1 mg/kg BW - .46 mg/lb BW 1 mg/kg BW - 46 mg/100 lb BW 1cc/kg BW - .46 cc/lb BW Although today we are blessed with many effective drugs to safeguard the health of our livestock, minor errors in dosage can result in major problems. Always read and follow the label directions carefully. If you are not clear on what to use, how much to use or how best to administer the drug, you should always consult your local veterinarian. In many countries of the world, producers are not allowed to self administer drugs to their livestock and health conscious groups within this country are concerned about the practice here. Their concern is that the use of pharmaceuticals in livestock, and especially the improper use, jeopardizes their effectiveness in human medicine. the future of our ability to medicate our livestock depends on how good a job we do of using drugs responsibly today. Tammy Christine Sewall - In Memory

It is with broken hearts that we announce the passing of our Tam. She was born July 9, 1968 at Pincher Creek, Alberta and died December 6, 2009

at Brooks, Alberta. She fought an unbelievably classy and courageous 8 year long battle with ovarian cancer. Tammy did everything humanely possible to beat this horrible disease and it may look to some who didn’t know her like we do that the cancer won., but it didn’t conquer her beautiful spirit and soul or her unending love for all of us. Tam is survived by her wonderful husband Dan; her Mom & Dad, Bob & Nonee Bonertz; sisters, Wedi (Henry) McCarthy, Heather (Carig) Gallant and sister-in-law Kim (Wylie) Orser. She was also “second Mom” to her beloved neice and nephews, Davis, Anna, Beth & Emmett McCarthy; Lane and Jacey Bonertyz and Reid Gallant. She is also survived by her very special new family, the Sewalls; Chad, Sue & family; Scott and family & Mary Jane and Dwight. Tammy was predeceased by her brother Glen, her Nana and Papa Whipple, Grandpa Bonertz and she will also now meet her mother-in-law Bette Sewall. Whatever Tammy did her whole life, she gave 200%. She will be remembered for her great pies and poppyseed buns, her love for Black Angus cattle, her work ethic, her enduring strength, but mostly for her

unconditional love for Dan and her family and friends. This group of extraordinary friends were also her family - by choice. We are all so blessed to have her in our lives. Tammy had a plaque in her house for many years who’s saying she lived by, especially these last years. It reads “Life is not about waiting for the storm to pass. It is about learning to dance in the rain”. we will love you and miss your presence and beautifull smile forever. Special thanks to the caring and compassionate Doctors and nursing staff in the Brooks and Pincher Creek Hospitals also to Smith Funeral Home in Brooks and to Dennis and his staff at Eden’s Funeral Home for their help and guidance. Thanks also to Fr. Eric Nelson, Rosalee, the choir and C.W.L. all of St. Michaels Church. If so desired donations may be made in Tammy’s memory to: Alberta Farm Safety, P.O. Kenneth William Frazer - In Memory

Kenneth William Frazer was born on August 9, 1926 and passed away on December 14, 2009 at the age of 83 years sitting in his chair overlooking the ranch he loved. Ken married Roberta Harden in 1947 and since then has had his best friend always by his side. Ken loved animals, especially cattle and horses, which were his passion. He was instrumental in the beginning of the Red Angus breed in Canada. Ken took a lot of pride in the accomplishments of all of his grandchildren and great-grandchildren, and loved spending time with them all. In his last few years Ken spent a great deal of his time trying to ensure that there would be a new swimming pool at the Wood Mountain Regional Park for everyone to enjoy. Page 14

Winter Edition 2009*

Ken is survived by his wife Roberta Frazer (nee Harden) of Fir Mountain, SK, grandson Clayton (Corrine) Gibson of Fir Mountain, SK and their children Callie, Cade and Coy, granddaughter Sandi (Michael) Gray of Perdue, SK and their children Gage, Kylah and Luke, as well as numerous nieces, nephews and extended family. Ken was predeceased by his daughter Louise Gibson (1999), parents Annie and James Frazer, father and mother-in-law Armstead and Pearl Harden, sisters Myrtle Williams, Dorothy Hutton and brother Archie Frazer. A Funeral Service was held on Friday, December 18, 2009 at 2:00 p.m. at the Fir Mountain Hall, Fir Mountain, SK with Pastor Todd Moroz and Pastor Rick Aupperle officiants. Grandchildren Sandi Gray and Clayton Gibson shared a tribute on Ken’s life. Mark and Karin Elford and Clint and Don Mitchell were the singers. Great grandchildren Cade Gibson and Callie Gibson were the urn bearers. Honorary pallbearers were Ken’s great grandchildren Coy, Gage, Kylah, Luke and his nieces and nephews Gary, Ellie, Wally, Verna, Patsy, Terry, Rodney. Memorial donations in memory of Ken may be made to the Wood Mountain Regional Park Swimming Pool Fund. Funeral arrangements entrusted to PicheHawkins-Grondin Funeral Chapels, Assiniboia & Gravelbourg. Angus World

Tribute to Ken given by his grandson and granddaughter Clayton and Sandi Grandpa started out his life living with his family, both in town and on various ranches in the Glentworth area. Early in life it was plain to see that Grandpa loved animals and ranching became his passion. At the early age of 14, he left home and went to work for a neighboring rancher, Bud Lamb. He spent that entire winter alone caring for livestock, six miles from the nearest neighbor. Grandpa entered the military in March of 1945 and was stationed in Maple Creek and Dundurn for his training. He was then transferred to Vernon, B.C. however due to the ending of the war he never got to fulfill his dream of doing active duty. Grandpa returned home from the Army and met and married Roberta Harden, or Birdie, as we all know her. Grandpa once said “ I never had a best friend until I met Birdie”. From that day forward they never spent much time apart. They started out with nothing but the determination and the desire to succeed. Grandma and Grandpa were blessed with one child – our mom- Louise Pearl who was born in November of 1948. She was truly the joy of their life. Continued on Page 24

Erika Geis - In Memory

Grandma was born on the farm in Mosside where she lived all of her life. She was the youngest of three girls to Henry and Magdelene Gerloff. She went to Craven school in the Mosside district and enjoyed life on the farm, helping her parents. Her mother had lost her sight in an accident so there was always lots to do. In 1957 she married Don Geis and they took over the Gerloff farm. They had a dairy herd which was dispersed in 1987 and so left more time to concentrate on their Angus herd which had been established in 1975. In 1991 Don passed away suddenly, Erika remained on the farm with Brian and Kim as they continued to farm together. Grandma always had a huge productive garden with corn as tall as the trees and raspberries that she shared with all. She spent hours with her flowers and loved watching and identifying the birds at the feeders.

In her later years she took up painting and spent countless hours creating her masterpieces. She designed many projects from new and antique pieces for friends and family. Grandma took a huge amount of time in detailing all her work, always fixing and perfecting each picture. Her self taught technique by the artist on TV shows improved her passion to paint as she continued to get better with each picture she completed. Grandma was always very good at whatever she did. Everyone that visited the farm had to stop for a coffee, baking, or even better, a three course meal along with a good chat. A conversation or phone call with her was always interesting and enjoyed. Uncle Brian recalls a time when the phone rang one morning, Grandma answered and talked a good 15/20 minutes, when asked who called she replied it was a "wrong number" She had talked long enough to know that the fellow that called was a Texan, his first name, what he did for a living and how the weather was down there. For the last 16 years she was blessed with a great companion Bill Cook. They enjoyed spending time with both families. Also, they took trips to Kansas, California, The Maritimes, Australia, New Zealand, and more. Grandma and Bill were kept very busy attending as many of the grand kids activities as possible: hockey, baseball, dance, 4-H, piano and school activities. She also missed very few cattle sales and shows where she went to see old friends and always made some new ones. It was always important to

Grandma to introduce these new and old friends to her family, who she was so proud of. Erika leaves to mourn her best friend Bill. Her eldest daughter, Darlene and Glen Glessman, daughter Brenda and Terry O'Brien and one son Brian and Kim Geis. Six Grandchildren Melissa and Kyle Beattie, Patrick and Kelsey O'Brien, Kurt Glessman, Amy Glessman, Jenna Geis and Robert Geis. One great grand child Rylan O'Brien. Two sisters Inga Arndt, and Ursuala Nicol and many nieces and Nephews. Also Bill’s sister Jean Lang his brother Denis and Carolyn Cook. Bill’s sons and families Tim and Lousie Cook, Nathan and Nolan. Rob and Sue Cook, Jenniffer, Sarah, Mathew, Madison and Sophie. Stu and Kim Cook, Emily and Ben. She was very proud of her whole family and extended family. Everyone that she met remained a friend. With her recent illness she always stayed positive and never complained. In the last weeks when she was in the hospital with family all around she added her thoughts and humor to our conversations and blew and received kisses from her great grand son. She was always thankful for the support that she received from family and friends. She was very thankful for spending 16 wonderful years with Bill, and especially for how good he was for grandma in the last few months. She will be sorrowfully missed by her many friends and family. We love you Grandma "Your the Best" Written by her grandson Patrick

Ken Frazer continued from Page 14 When mom was just a young girl they lived on the South Ranch that is still part of the Six Mile operation today. When it was time for mom to go to school, Grandma and Grandpa moved to the current ranch site on Six Mile creek. This allowed mom to attend school in Fir Mountain. Right from a young child, mom enjoyed working alongside Grandma and Grandpa doing various ranch work. During mom’s school years Grandpa ran the ranch, was a cattle buyer and did various other jobs to make ends meet. In 1967 I (Clayton Gibson) was born. I was born just two days before Grandpa’s 41st birthday. It was during these next few years that they introduced the Red Angus breed into their cowherd. In 1971 they decided to go into the Purebred Seed stock business and Six Mile Red Angus began. Grandpa was very proud of the motto he coined as Six Mile’s mission statement “Producing cattle that are born easy with the will to live, the ability to grow and the quality to sell”. That is still our goal today. In 1972 I (Sandi Gray) came along and completed the 2nd generation of their family. On my second birthday Grandpa quit smoking cold turkey. That’s the way Grandpa was – once he put his mind to it – there was nothing it seemed he couldn’t do. Sandi and I (Clayton) spent a lot of time at Grandma and Grandpa’s when we were young. Grandpa always demanded respect but was extremely gentle in how he taught us the skills we needed to operate a ranch. We learned a lot from Grandpa – horseback riding, working cattle, braiding rope and running machinery were all things we learned from him. However, once we learned how to do these things – we sure got a lot of practice! Grandpa and Grandma worked hard building their Red Angus herd but they also dedicated a lot of time to promoting the Red Angus breed in general. They were founding members of the Red Angus promotion society and were a driving force in bringing the Red Angus breed to the forefront of the cattle industry. Grandpa helped both Sandi and I (Clatyon) have opportunities in agriculture, however he always liked to have control of the way it happened. Grandpa was a man who believed that nothing should be handed over for free. He was always willing to help us, but made sure we were working and earning that help. Grandpa was know as a shrewd but smart business man and he was made Six Mile a household name in the Red Angus industry and the cattle industry in general. In the mid 80’s Grandpa’s health was failing him and he needed to slow down. It was at this time that he began putting a lot of cattle out on share basis and assisting other people to make a start in the cattle business – particularly with the Red Angus breed. Many lasting friendships were made through these associations. Until the day he died Grandpa talked about the thousands of head of cattle he had spread around the country. continued on Page 34 Page 24

Alberta Angus Association Message

Darrin Hipkin It has definitely been a year to remember! For half the year many of the membership and AAA directors have been gearing up for probably the largest event that we will be involved with in our breeding history and in our back yard, the World Angus Forum. WAF brought every one together across Alberta and the World to the beautiful Spruce Meadows and the incredible quality of cattle that were on display for the world to see. As Angus leaders we showcase a new way of how to promote your herd with the great dry spaces that were put together, which was carried on to out

other major shows in the fall. I personally would like to thank the AAA board members and our membership that volunteered all the hard hours of work to pull this off. It was an event that we will all talk about for generations to come and will be hard to duplicate. The AAA Directors held their fourth annual retreat at the Olds Cow Palace where we did team building and planning for the future of the AAA. Out of this meeting it was recognized that we have a great opportunity to increase the focus of our commercial market and build on our Steak Fries that have taken place throughout the province. We have developed the “One Stop Shop” sponsorship campaign which allows breeders a one time sponsor for the events throughout the year. I hope that these retreats continue as part of the AAA over the next few years as it allows the opportunity for every one to share ideas, build goals, and objectives for the future of the breed and the organization. As a board, we have started to stream line our accounting side of AAA. Within the Retreat we have been able to offer accountability that each committee and chair person with in the committee is fully responsible for their budget. With this in place to help lead into discussion

on the financial situation that the board was in and was able to be proactive in determining where some funds need to be assessed at and changes that needed to be made. I would like to thank all the board members and our membership for all the support, time and effort that they have put forth to make this breed and provincial association leaders of the cattle industry. In closing I am very excited for the coming years ahead and it being lead by one of the most respected future Hall of Fame Angus breeders Colton Hamilton. It has been a pleasure serving as your President and I am committed to help in every effort possible to continue the success of our breed. Please join us at the Alberta Angus Association “Rescheduled” Annual General Membership Meeting, Sunday, January 17, 2010 at the Olds Evergreen Centre, Olds, AB. Lunch will be provided at noon with the meeting following at 1:00 p.m. Yours truly, Darren Hipkin

Ontario Angus Association Message

Richard Tanner Seasons Greetings to all ! I will remember 2009 as whirwind of activity, almost too busy for my first year as Ontario President. From our trip to British Columbia in May to attend the Canandian General meeting to the wrap up of our Ontario Futurity in

it’s a whole new

December ,there was never too much time to get the farming done and visit a few of the fall shows and sales. In the middle of all of that was a very enjoyable visit to the World Angus Forum in July. Even though we are seeing some tough times in the cattle business as a whole, the prices at the Angus sales this fall have for the most part held their own with other years. The Ontario Association meets at least five times a year and I want to thank all the directors who take the time and the effort to attend these meetings. Things such as the Royal show and sale, the futurity and the Annual meeting don't just happen. There is a lot of work done by our directors and secretary to make these events happen.

The Ontario Association continues to be on a good financial footing however we must not sit back and think that our fund raising can slide. The money used to promote Angus cattle in Ontario benefits every member of the Association, and we must strive to be on a solid financial footing. A very big thank-you goes out to our secretary Julie Smith who keeps things running smoothly and efficiently at all times. In closing I would like to extend Seasons Greetings to everyone on Behalf of the Ontario Angus Association . Richard Tanner President Ontario Angus Association

Maritime Angus Message

Tim Dixon As I write this report, the Confederation Bridge has been closed to trucks for two days and cars can only travel at 40 km/h due to 100 km/h winds. If only beef prices would fly so high! Congratulations go out to all the Maritime 4-Hers who showed Angus cattle at the Junior Heifer show in Toronto. Colby MacQuarrie, Hayley Ings, Andrew Dixon, James Worth, Taylor Welch and Brooke Bubar placed well in conformation and showmanship. The New Brunswick Angus association has held its annual meeting and Nova Scotia is busy preparing for the Annual Meetings to be held in June in Halifax. Hope I can meet many of you there! Prince Edward Island will hold its meeting over the holidays in preparation for the Maritime Angus Association Annual Meeting January 10. Highlight of the meeting will be guest speaker Frank MacMaster who will talk about his new beef plant and fresh ideas of working with producers so that all sectors of the industry can remain strong.

While the show season has ended, preparation for next year has begun as first round nominations for the "Igenity Angus Classic Futurity" were due the middle of December. This is a unique show where only Maritime bred and owned animals are eligible and this allows our breeders to showcase their breeding programs. The bull calf class final placings are determined by combining the conformation class results with the results of each animal's Igenity test. Thank you to Merial for sponsoring the event. Season's Greetings and Happy Calving! Tim Dixon

Ken Frazer continued from Page 24 In 1987 I (Clayton) moved home from university to work alongside Grandpa and Grandma in order for them to slow down a bit. I can say with all honesty that Grandpa never really slowed down. In 1991, I married Corinne and that is when we began to take over the ropes of Six Mile Red Angus. We purchased the remainder of the ranch in 2003 and were happy that we were able to allow Grandpa to live on the ranch he loved until the day he passed away. Over the years Grandpa tried to help out where he could, volunteering for various associations such as the Fir Mountain Hall Board, the Canadian Red Angus Promotion Society, the Saskatchewan Angus Association, and the Saskatchewan Stockgrowers Association. Grandma and Grandpa were honored with the Saskatchewan Livestock honor scroll in 1994. Grandpa was honored to be a founding member of the Red Angus Promotion Society and to serve as the president of the Saskatchewan Angus Assoication when Red was not the most popular color of ANGUS!! In the past few years Grandpa’s focus was on the Wood Mountain Regional Park and his goal was to see a new swimming pool built for future generations to enjoy. Grandpa took great pride in his 6 great grandchildren making it to many of their events. He gave each of his great grandchildren their first cows. He was there to watch many of the kid’s 4-H shows and bragged about the incredible show and cattle person his granddaughter Callie was becoming. He always remarked that he thought Coy was going to be one of the best cowhands around – you just wait and see. In the past few years Grandpa often called on his self proclaimed “handyman” – Cade - to assist him with various tasks and it was Cade who often helped Grandpa in and out of bed in the last few weeks. Grandpa was told over twenty years ago to go home and get his affairs in order because he suffered from numerous health issues. It was shear determination and perhaps a little bit of Scottish stubbornness that kept him with us for so long. Shortly after Grandpa’s passing we spoke with his medical doctor and he said, “ that man was like a cat with nine lives” We have many fond memories of Grandpa over the years. However the one thing we can honestly say is that most of these memories include Grandpa and Grandma being together. They built a ranch and a family together and showed us all what it meant to be true partners for life.

CAA - President’s Message

John Donaldson I have just returned from a trip to Alberta and Saskatchewan where I took in some sales and visited with many members. I was pleased to see excellent support and attendance at most of the sales and the excellent cattle offered. The weather was brutal, -49 in Saskatoon with the windchill but us hardy Angus breeders made the effort to come out and help our fellow breeders. I don’t know if the members are aware but being a member of the Board is a volunteer position and the Directors that you see at many events and sales are there at their own expense. I took advantage of a seat sale and convinced Donna that this would be a “fun” vacation. I don’t think

I can pull that one on her again as she is a West Coast girl and was very cold the entire time. She told me that most people have vacations in a warm place in the winter so I think we will be headed there for a short sun drenched vacation in early 2010. I attended Agribition and was pleased to see ten Directors there also. As you all know Angus reigned Supreme again. It was a great show but I was disappointed that the show used glue and some paint. I would like to hear from members that do not show and ask them is they would like us to continue with our ban or aerosols at shows. The ban is successful at shows in the USA and was successful at Expo Boeuf in Quebec. Please let your Director know your thoughts on this issue so that it may be resolved. The ban was instituted due to the environmental and health issues with aerosols and those are issues that effect all attendees at shows, not just the exhibitors. The cattle prices are down due to the soft economy, high Canadian dollar and a shortage of feed in many places. I am optimistic that it will turn around in 2010. The cattle herd is down substantially in Canada and that should be reflected soon in higher prices.

I want to thank the commercial fieldmen for doing a tremendous job promoting Angus this year. Brian Good, Ken Cox, Blair McRae, Bob Prestage(the most enthusiastic Angus cheerleader in Canada), Jack Brown, John Duivendooren and Wayne Gallup diligently attend feeder sales and commercial events all across the country and their work has ensured Angus remains number one. Wayne Gallup arranged for the ATQ tags in Quebec to be Angus green and I am looking forward to seeing a sea of green at the feedlots in Quebec next year. Our next Board Meeting is in Saskatoon in February in conjunction with the GOAL conference for the juniors. If you have any items you want on the agenda at the next meeting please contact your Director soon so that it may be included. I wish you all the best of health, happiness, easy calving and great cattle prices in 2010.

Canadian Junior Angus Association

Quinn Hamilton Hello Everyone, I hope you all had a Merry Christmas and are enjoying the holidays!

The CJAA had yet another successful donation heifer auction at the Masterpiece Sale in Regina. This success was thanks to the very supportive Angus breeders that bought tickets on the heifer. This year, Ivanhoe Angus, Ron and Marilyn Mountenay kindly donated a pick of their ’09 heifer calves. A huge thank you goes out to them as well as congratulations to Youngdale Angus for winning the “pick”. Again, the CJAA would like to thank all of our past supporters who make it possible for us to continue our scholarship program. A reminder to all junior Angus enthusiasts to get your registration in for the 5th annual GOAL conference that will be held in Saskatoon, SK February 19-21, 2010. The weekend will be lots of fun and a great opportunity to meet other juniors from across the country. Lots of exciting things are planned this year including a tour of

the DNA lab, the vet college and the Canadian light source. As well as taking a trip to Champetre Place for lots of fun. There will also be industry speakers throughout the weekend. The deadline for registering is January 10th, 2010 so don’t forget! Finally I want to remind everyone that the CJAA will have board positions available starting in July 2010. There are spots opening up in Alberta, Saskatchewan, Manitoba and Quebec. Nominations must be submitted to Belinda Wagner by January 31st, 2010. Contact a current director for more information, or call the CJAA office if you are interested in running for the board. Quinn Hamilton ~ CJAA President

Canadian Angus Association - CEO Message

Doug Fee

I am writing this message while much of the country is covered in snow and dealing with freezing temperatures. It has been a challenging year in many ways, so it is fitting that the year ends with the many challenges that winter brings. We know that the weather will improve and spring will be here before we know it. Rather than dwell on the gloom of the cold winter weather, we have some exciting initiatives to look forward to next year and much to be proud of in 2009. 2010 Memberships In an effort to save paper and postage, we will send your 2010 membership renewals with your herd inventories. Both will be mailed on Monday, January 18, 2010. If you need your membership renewed sooner to complete paperwork, you can contact the office starting January 4 and we will process your 2010 membership on demand. Rule Changes as of January 1, 2010 As reported in the last magazine, at the October meeting, the Board of Directors made some amendments to our rules. Starting January 1, 2010, all calves born after January 1, 2010 with a known genetic defect carrier within the first two generations of its pedigree must be tested free of the defect to be eligible for

registration. Testing will be at the member's expense and can be arranged by contacting Kajal in Breed Development. Two recent parentage errors that followed American sires used in Canada encouraged the Board to standardize our requirements. An amendment was passed requiring that all imported sires be sire verified before progeny can be registered in order to be consistent with Canadian standards. Angus Tags in Quebec Our CACP Angus Tag program is going national! As of December 15, producers in Quebec will be able to purchase Angus tags through ATQ. The ATQ Angus tag shares the distinct lime green colour of the CACP Angus tag. We are thrilled that CACP is now a truly national program. 2009 Highlights We hosted the world in July, and our World Angus Forum is without doubt the biggest highlight of the year. We put on a successful and prestigious event with the support of all of our members from coast to coast. Each and every one of you should be proud of the role you played in this success. We expanded our commercial outreach in eastern Canada with the help of our part-time commercial fieldmen John Duivenvoorden and Wayne Gallup. Thanks to their efforts, Quebec joined in the fall CACP feeder sales for the first time. We now have CACP sales in every region of Canada. We invested a considerable amount of time in revamping our website and launched a new look in the spring. We continue to offer expanded features and services on our website, the most recent one being the addition of a page dedicated to the activities of your Board of Directors. Canadian Angus Rancher Endorsed Canadian Angus Rancher Endorsed has far exceeded our hopes. We hoped to have four

licensed participants sign on by the end of 2009. We launched the program at the World Angus Forum in July with six licensed participants and end the year with 11 participants and 2 applications under consideration. Our two newest participants are Spring Creek Ranch and Canada Gold Beef who are developing a Canada Gold Angus Beef program. We have recently launched www.rancherendorsed.com, a website dedicated to the program. We encourage you to visit the website to see the full list of licensed participants and to check out the interactive map of Canada. You can click on a province to bring up a list of locations where you can buy Canadian Angus Rancher Endorsed beef. Looking Ahead to 2010 We made a commitment to Foodlogiq and the Beef InfoXchange System (BIXS) and have been working hard in the office to develop an Angus community in this program. A handful of Angus producers are testing the system right now, and we look forward to a full program launch in 2010. Producers have talked about meaningful data exchange for far longer than I have been here but among other objectives this program offers the best opportunity to get real carcass data back to producers. We will be launching a new feature on our website in early January. The “What’s up Angus Blog” will be a new way to communicate with our members. The blog will feature the latest happenings in the office and the Association. Year End As 2009 draws to a close, it is appropriate to extend best wishes to all from the staff in the Canadian Angus office. It has been a privilege to work for you during the past year and we look forward to continuing to serve you in the years to come. Merry Christmas and Happy New Year.

How do breeders get involved in Canadian Angus Rancher Endorsed? We are pleased with the response to Canadian Angus Rancher Endorsed. It is fairly easy to gauge the response to a branded beef program, but no one else has tried anything like Canadian Angus Rancher Endorsed. The success and acceptance of the program is in part because breeders have quickly embraced our efforts. There are two things that you can do as a breeder to get involved and ensure Canadian Angus Rancher Endorsed enjoys long-term success.

First, our licensed participants have been unanimous in telling us they need more Angus tagged cattle. Use Angus tags on your cattle and allow us to share your contact information with purchasers and encourage your commercial customers to use Angus tags as well. Second, continue to help us promote Canadian Angus Rancher Endorsed. The program is good for the breed association, the purebred breeders and the commercial producers who use Angus genetics because ultimately it increases consumer demand for Angus beef.

Ask the CEO What is a spot test and why does the Association require them? The Canadian Angus Association requires that every 200th animal registered be DNA tested. This “spot test” is a DNA parentage test that helps us maintain breed purity. If your animal is selected for a spot test, you will be notified in writing, a DNA kit will be sent for both the calf and dam and the Association will pay the cost of the test. Your animal must pass the spot test to be successfully registered. If you are unable to verify parentage, the animal is ineligible for registration and you must test another animal that will pass. We always aim for 100% pass rate, and we come very close. The 2008 spot test pass rate was 92%.

It’s been quite a fall with a late harvest in some areas, a shortage of feed in others and now some untimely storms into December. Things started off with smaller runs but finished with a thunder of cattle going through the auctions. I was in Assiniboia the other day, and they had over 4,600 head on offer. Ken Cox reported a good run at Killam in early December. Blair McRae has reported a great run in Ashern in late November. All the Angus strings don’t necessarily come to town on our designated days. Wayne Gallup gets to lots of weekly sales in Quebec that have good numbers of Angus for sale. John Duivenvoorden reports that Ontario had some good sales, especially at

Keady. You know, the good cattle still brought a decent price. I could sure see a spread in second and third cut cattle. Breds seem to be doing quite well at different events such as Agribition, Six Mile and Cudlobe, to name a few. Brian Mackenzie’s customer appreciation sale at Fort Macleod was great on the breds along with Remington’s two bred heifer sales. This is all good to hear. We attended many sales for you across Canada, and I will give you a brief summary of each province. Jack Brown drove the BC sale run and attended 5 different sale locations. Ken Cox and Bob Prestage headed north and got to the Dawson Creek location. We managed to cover all sale locations in BC. In Alberta, we covered the majority, that being 23 of 25 locations. Saskatchewan was well represented for you covering 12 of 16 locations. Blair McRae covered some ground making 6 of 9 locations in Manitoba. He made it to our new sale location in Killarney—great sale! John Duivenvoorden had a late harvest but was able to get to 3 of 6 locations.

Wayne got to our 3 new locations in Quebec where prices were very outstanding. There is lots of demand for Angus cattle for the feedlots in that area of Canada. Bill Prior reported a decent sale at the Sussex Sale Barn in New Brunswick. As you can see, we missed very few locations, as our objective is to attend each location once. With our super group of reps, they did a great job of getting around Canada. Congratulations! Our commercial industry was well represented by this group of dedicated people. Also, hats off to the folks who put on the steak fries in Alberta. I know they were much appreciated. Great job Cecilie Fleming and Doug Reid. In closing, my thought for the year: “He who sings his own praise is seldom asked for an encore.” Brian Good CAA Commercial Fieldman (403) 391-4037

Canadian Angus Association - Breed Development

Wishing you all a Merry Christmas and a very happy and successful New Year! And, in case my wishes alone don’t make your year, let me offer you something more powerful: selection tools. Since the beginning of time Angus breeders have used selective breeding to shape and develop the breed into the tasty quality product that Angus is today. Historically, selective breeding was based on phenotype, or looks because the apple does not fall far from the tree. But, what if there was a way to predict just how far the apple would fall, how well it would grow, and how well it would taste? EPDs are generated using complex calculations that eliminate the environmental Page 38

Winter Edition 2009*

influence on traits, giving breeders a prediction of how an animal’s progeny will look and perform. There are several levels of EPDs, so users must be aware of the accuracy when using them. Parental Averages or Pedigree Estimates (PE) are simply an average of the sire’s and dam’s national EPDs. The Canadian Angus Association generates these for qualified calves that do not have any weaning records of their own yet. PEs are a good start for assessing calves. The next level of EPDs is Interims (PE+). These are calculated using the calf ’s sire and dam EPDs and the calf ’s own performance records. The Canadian Angus Association is pleased to announce that Interim EPDs will now be generated for qualified animals. What does this mean to Angus breeders? You will now have a more accurate tool available for selective breeding. Of the highest caliber and accuracy is the National EPD which is generated for qualified animals twice every year. I have a couple more tools in my Christmas stocking that will help Angus breeders select breeding animals for success and profitability. Looking at an animal certainly does not tell you everything about its genetics, particularly recessive genes that cause genetic defects like Arthrogryposis Multiplex (AM), Neuropathic Hydrocephalus (NH) and Osteopetrosis

Angus World

(OS). However, the words “genetic defect” need not terrorize breeders ever again because DNA tests for these genes have made it possible to identify carrier animals. And the Canadian Angus Association is providing members, at no cost, a Geneprob herd analysis that will identify animals with any probability of having inherited these genes. So this year, Angus breeders will have access to a list of animals that have a probability of having inherited the gene for AM, NH and OS. They will be able to test these animals to ascertain which animals are carriers of these genes. Not registering and breeding carriers will help eliminate these genes from the Angus breed. And, with Interim EPDs now available members can use EPDs with even more confidence — remember to look at the % accuracy posted with each EPD. Here to help you all have a happy and successful New Year — Kajal Devani.
