The Greeks believed that diamonds were tears of gods; the ancient Romans believed that diamonds were fragments of stars. Diamonds are formed from high heat and pressure in the center of the earth. They are the hardest natural materials and the only gemstone that is comparable to the tears of gods and fragments of stars. Only a diamond can scratch another diamond. In the field of design art, crystal is the only material can present diamond-like flames. The eternal image of the crystal is the best symbol of Velo’s constant pursuit for perfection. Like the “shaping progression”of a crystal, this theme in our special issue is what Velo wants to dedicate to our friends all over the world. How much does it pay to possess the brilliance like that of a crystal? Focusing on developing and producing perfect, high-end saddles is the sole aim for Velo founder Stella Yu Tsai-Yun. For 40 years, it is this mission that has been spurring Velo’s staff to achieve even better, as well as to hone outstanding aesthetics and distinct craftsmanship. It is unusual that this kind of “shaping progression” could be provided to clients and consumers at a reasonable cost, offering riders an “affordable happiness”. In this issue, we are going to share the secrets of how Velo saddles make possible the fulfillment in the ride. We also would like to invite you to come on a journey with Velo Vice President Ann to Hong Kong and Dongguan, China for a dialogue with European footwear designer David and supercar lover Tony. With the sharing of their crossover experiences, what kind of spark will ignite from the exchanges of the three experts, and how might it impact the process of excellence that takes place in the research and development at Velo? AFFORDABLE HAPPINESS 打造合理代價的幸福感商品

What is the cost of happiness? Japanese writer Miura Atsushi raised the concept of the fourth-stage consumer society, which is the idea that after people experience the ultimate pursuit of material possessions, they begin to make things simple by crafting products that bring a sense of happiness at a reasonable price. This is a transformation. Instead of seeking material satisfaction from the outside, it is searching within for satisfaction and happiness. Listening to the needs of clients and consumers and endeavoring to provide the ideal cycling experience, Velo creates each saddle with that“ sense of happiness at a reasonable price”. Founder Stella Yu Tsai-Yun emphasizes that, for 40 years, Velo's R&D strength has underpinned the highest quality products at the most reasonable prices. With annual output of 15 million bicycle saddles, the scale of Velo's production capacity sufficiently addresses the needs of different clients in the global market. Each saddle epitomizes innovative R&D, reasonable pricing and the ultimate balance in high quality CP value. This has been the intention of Velo since the beginning and also the shared vision with its partners. In celebration of its 40th anniversary, Velo held a threeday “Grateful to have you along the way” cycling tour of northern Taiwan. Clients and partners from all over the world rode bikes together to promote cycling, which has been the vital philosophy of Velo's company culture. The northern cycling route was specially chosen to show off the beauty of Taiwan. Stella said, “Clients and friends that participated in this activity are long-time friends of Velo and also people who enjoy cycling. Cruising along with views of spectacular mountains and the wide open sea is the best reward.” During the ride, business partners became family members, supporting and taking care of each other. “The more skillful riders rode far in the back to keep an eye on the new riders. This kind of gesture was very touching.” As host, Stella said safe cycling was the most important. Whenever there was a temple, she would go in and pray to

the deity for the safety of everyone on the tour. The special temple culture gave many foreign friends a whole new experience. Her sincerity must have reached the deities; the weather for the three days was fair and during the 120-kilometer journey of the last day, a cool strong breeze rose, sending the entire cycling team travelling on a tailwind at nearly 30 kilometers per hour down the Western Coast Expressway. “When we returned to Dajia headquarters, the entire company greeted us with cheers. Everyone laughed heartedly at this herolike welcoming. It was truly a very wonderful experience.” This unforgettable tour also became the best opportunity for heartfelt exchanges. Facing the huge challenge of the US-Sino trade war, which cannot be ignored by the bicycle industry, many foreign and domestic partners during the northern ride also exchanged views on ways to respond, on how to react to changes in cost and shipment orders, and on whether a production base and factory should be relocated to other suitable places. Stella said that what Velo could do was to stay calm and continue with the spirit of 40 years of persistently focusing on R&D and innovation. “Let each rider, once they sit on a Velo saddle, to immediately feel at ease and untroubled,” Stella said confidently. This is the strength and immutable core competitiveness of Velo.

Shenzhen Saturday afternoon when Velo VP Ann, An-Rong Chen finished visiting the Velo factory in Shenzhen, she carried her luggage and moved on to Dongguan to embark on a learning tour during a brief break in her busy schedule. Her first stop was to visit shoe designer David Hsieh. David was schooled in the UK. He once worked for the Italian name brand United Colors of Benetton, but was now a consultant to many known shoe brands in Europe, the US and China. He made a special arrangement for Ann to visit a shoe sample-manufacturing factory. “I visited many renowned shoe brands but never had the opportunity to truly observe the manufacturing detail on the production line,” Ann laughed. This was a whole new experience for her. 週六下午,剛結束維樂深圳廠業務視察的維樂副總陳安榮 Ann 拎著輕便行李, 風塵僕僕來到東莞,在馬不停蹄行程 的小空檔,展開這趟學習之旅,首站是拜訪旅歐鞋子設計師 謝鎌光 David,在英國留學,曾在義大利知名品牌 United Colors of Benetton 集團任職,現為歐美及內地多家知名鞋 子品牌顧問的謝鎌光,特別安排 Ann 參觀鞋類的樣品工廠, 『以前雖然有拜訪過許多鞋類知名品牌,但一直沒有機會真 正進入生產線觀察製鞋過程的細節。』Ann 笑著說,這對她 可是一個全新的體驗。 A sample-manufacturing factory is on the frontlines of shoe production. Though the scale is small, the factory it has the full process of shoemaking from design, pattern making, cutting, sewing, to outsole, put-on last, tack, outsole attaching, molding, packaging et al processes. All types of shoe samples would be reviewed and tested by clients worldwide. Only when the factory

receives purchase orders, do these samples enter into production to be finally fitted on the feet of consumers. “The manufacturing process of bicycle saddles and shoes overlaps to a certain degree. Shoe production has a larger scale. The use of new materials and technologies tends to first appear in shoe products. It is therefore very important for us to learn from the shoemaking industry.” Ann listened very carefully to every detail David introduced. He shared his ideas for the future potential of bicycle saddles. “Technology and the application of shoemaking change rapidly. Some materials for shoes or the weaving of shoes may be applied to bicycle saddles in the future. For example, the popular flat knitting seen for sport shoes or high technology fabrics that can sense a physical condition and connect to the mobile phone, these are all full of possibility.” 樣品工廠是鞋子生產的最前線,可說麻雀雖小,五臟俱全,從 設計,打版,剪裁, 針車,到大底,入楦,結幫,貼大底,定 型,包裝等流程,全都在樣品工廠內完成,這些各式各樣的鞋 子樣品將接受全球客戶的檢視與考驗,有了訂單後,才有機會 進入生產線和全球消費者見面,『其實腳踏車的坐墊和鞋子的 製程有相當程度的重疊,鞋子全球量產規模大,很多新材料與 新科技的運用,都會先在鞋子的商品上出現,因此對我們來說, 和製鞋業取經是非常重要的。』維樂副總陳安榮非常仔細的聆 聽 David 介紹每一個細節,時而沉思,時而驚喜,而謝鎌光也 分享他對腳踏車坐墊未來潛力的想像:『製鞋的技術與應用日 新月異,像現在有一些鞋子的材料或鞋面的織法,未來也許可 以被運用在腳踏車的坐墊上,例如近年運動鞋流行的飛織或是 可以感應身體狀態並和手機連線的高科技布料,這些都充滿可 能性 !』

Finishing the visit of shoe sample manufacturing factory, Ann took the high speed rail to Hong Kong and visited Lee Tung Street, the Little Europe in Wan Chai. The exotic atmosphere of European style buildings on the streets with red lanterns made Ann laugh brightly. She was highly anticipating the next stop in her schedule – the supercar experience! 結束鞋子樣品工廠的參訪,Ann 一行人搭乘高鐵來到東方之珠 香港,抽空到灣仔有小歐洲之稱的利東街走走逛逛,兩側的歐 式建築搭配充滿年味的大紅燈籠高高掛,異國風情讓人心情整 個輕鬆了起來,Ann 笑得燦爛,除了利東街的氣氛滿點外,最 主要原因是最令她期待的行程 - 超跑之旅要登場啦 ! Hong Kong supercar specialist Tony Kwok arrived in his bright orange McLaren to meet Ann and took her for a drive to experience the supercar and the sensation of catching everyone's eye. As the chief strategy officer of a venture capital company and one of the founders to Dragon Capital Group, Tony said the best reward for his hard work was the pleasure of driving supercars. Ann, who shared his love for speed, visited the stores of McLaren, Rolls Royce and Bentley, three supercar household names. The focus was on their design, the top craftsmanship of car manufacturing, and the seat experience that could not be missed by a Velo executive. The speed and workmanship principles of McLaren, and the excellence and luxury of British breeds Rolls Royce and Bentley all have their own look and feel. “One of the most important

function of the car seat for these supercars is to increase the sense of speed. The seats thus use lightweight carbon fiber materials and leather, finding balance between design and comfort,” Tony explained carefully. He was the youngest Rolls Royce owner in Hong Kong. He said the supercar was the top end, top of the line, top of the market item. Many styles are limited edition and pricy. However, the perfect fusion of technology and excellence in car manufacturing craftsmanship still attracts fans around the world to make a beeline for the supercars. 香港的超跑達人 Tony 郭東龍開著鮮橘色的 McLaren 麥拉倫 跟 Ann 會合, 兩人實際體驗超跑上路,眾人矚目的風光。身 為創投基金首席策略官,瀧資本策略投資創始人之一的 Tony 笑說自己努力工作, 最大的回饋就是能夠享受駕馭這些超跑 奔馳的快感,同樣喜愛速度感的維樂副總陳安榮,在 Tony 的 帶路下,拜訪了麥拉倫,勞斯萊斯及賓利三家超跑展售中心, 參訪的重點在這些超級跑車時尚爆點的設計感,頂級的製車工 藝,以及身為維樂人絕不能錯過的座椅體驗,以速度和工藝為 造車原則的麥拉倫, 訴求卓越奢華的勞斯萊斯, 以及標榜純 英式奢華的賓利, 各具個性及特色,『這些超跑的座椅最重 要的功能之一都是要提升速度感,因此大都使用輕量的碳纖維 材質和皮料,同時在兼具設計及舒適感間找到平衡。』Tony 細心的解釋著,Tony 也是香港最年輕的勞斯萊斯車主,他笑 著強調,超跑是屬於金字塔最頂端的市場,許多車款都是限量 且價值不菲,但完美融合高科技與卓越製車工藝,仍讓全球許 多跑車迷趨之若鶩。

When Ann tried out the driver seat or the back seats of these supercars, she was like a fan meeting her favorite idol; she proclaimed her true love. “I love driving. It's such a great enjoyment to experience in person the aesthetics design and top craftsmanship of these supercars. The sleek details, perfection and excellence are exceptionally beautiful and touching. This has been an impact beyond five senses, making me feel so good and wanting to put the experience into the design and manufacturing of Velo products,” said Ann. There was no difference between Velo’s principles and those of the supercars in seeking excellent workmanship and quality. Ann's two days and one night learning tour gradually came to an end in the Star Ferry in Victoria Harbour. She loved the water and enjoyed the sea breeze. “The trip was short, but the gain was ample. Being able to visit and experience shoemaking and supercars has left me with deeper understanding. Each process, aesthetic concept and function detail brought me enlightenment and inspiration. These will be the vital nutrients for Velo products.” Endless learning, growing and stretching is a vow by Ann and the Velo team. These core values will be on display in every Velo product. Velo produces saddles for almost all the top bicycle brands and is now one of the biggest brands for bicycle saddles in the world. Stella has become the legend of the global bicycle industry; she started from scratch at 30. “Actually I was quite fortunate to have chosen saddles to start my business. Making saddles was the best choice for my financial capacity and ability at that time. A saddle is small but it is the vital component that affects the cycling experience of a bicycle. For when you ride, almost your full body weight

is on the saddle. The quality of a saddle determines the success of a bicycle.” Stella emphasizes that a cyclist can tell the difference of sitting on a saddle for 5 minutes and 30 minutes, of pedaling for 10 kilometers and for 100 kilometers. In the past, a cyclist would allow the body time to adjust to the saddle, but not modern riders. “They demand comfort in the first 5 minutes on the saddle. This is a great challenge for us and the best driving force for Velo to continue with innovation and R&D.” Stella says that Velo launches 10 to 20 new models each year to meet the needs of different clients and consumers around the world. This commitment comes from Stella, herself, who was born in a poor family, with a love and a sense of mission for taking care of her family. “My family was very poor when I was little. Each member had to take turns to bring water in so we could have water to drink. I saw the hardship of my mother and older sister and decided to do my best to take care of my family.” This commitment Stella made to her family is the solid

principle and foundation that underpins the efforts of Velo's staff to their global clients. Velo has spent 40 years studying the technology of saddle making. It uses acclaimed German equipment in its factories and on manufacturing lines, and the finest and newest petrochemical raw materials, with rigorous quality control in the manufacturing process. Velo puts all these elements together to craft each and every saddle keeping in mind top quality and a reasonable selling price for global clients and consumers. “How can a good product be produced without good equipment and good raw material? Looking ahead, Velo will continue to build products that bring a sense of happiness and that are sold at reasonable prices. It will also focus on the saddle as a work of art. “Trends are ever-changing but the pursuit of the ultimate knows no bounds. Technology, aesthetics, petrochemical raw materials are forever progressing; and they push us forward. Only when we stay ahead of the trends can we keep improving. Let us not rest!” This driving force is the reason why 70-year-old Stella is still energetic and refuses to retire. However at the same time, she is passing the torch and Velo's spirit of shaping progression to the younger VP Ann Chen An-Rong. “Ann has better ability and guts than mine back in those years. I am sure she will exceed my accomplishment. Sometimes I feel sorry for her to take on these great responsibilities and so I share some of these with her for now to show my appreciation.” Stella's usual firmness gives way to warmth and support whenever she talks about Ann. Ann, who grew up in the Velo factory, did not fail her expectations. The excellent performance of Velo products in their aesthetics design has been confirmed. “Velo only produces the best products” not only rings true but is also the sweet result of Stella and Ann leading the Velo team through thick and thin.

BUILDING THE YOUBIKE LEGEND DARE TO BE THE ONLY ONE, THEN YOU CAN BE NO.1. " 打造 YouBike 傳奇 " 沒有唯一 哪有第一

As the driving force behind Taiwan's YouBike, Jin-Biao Liu, founder of Giant Global Group who built Giant into a global brand synonymous with bicycles, wrote yet another historical chapter for the bicycle industry. This time it was even more meaningful because he made people fall in love with cycling again. It's rare for a bicycle manufacturer to take part in the operation of a public bicycle system because it might affect business. However, Jin-Biao Liu decided to dive in anyway, resulting in YouBike setting a world-beating miracle in turnover. “It was really hard when YouBike just started. But cycling has many benefits; it conserves energy and reduces carbon emissions, relieves traffic and maintains fitness. As long as the cycling population does not decrease, there are business oppor tunities for the bicycle industry. It would be useless if no one cycles, no matter how good or how beautiful a bicycle is. It's very important to promote cycling. I see a lot of young people, even beautiful women in their shor t skirts, riding a YouBike. They look handsome and full of life and that makes me very happy!” Still full of spirit, 84-year-old Jin-Biao Liu, whom people respectfully address as “brother Biao”, shares his experience in promoting YouBike.

Velo is a capable partner to the Giant Group and also an important driving force in perfecting the cycling experience. Liu handed down his responsibilities to the younger generation in 2016. He confessed that he had been focusing on the bicycle industry since he was 38 years old and was not quite used to retirement and letting go. “At the start when discussing issues, we would be at odds due to different perspectives. But I realized later that the innovation of the younger generation was something the older generation could not match. Their business model also is more in line with the trend of the times. In the past two years, I observed more of their methods and listened to more of their ideas. Now I am slowly getting used to it.” He laughs. Learning when to shut up is also an art.

YouBike, built by Liu, uses the saddle Velo customized for it. He and Velo founder Stella Tsai-Yun Yu are friends for over 40 years. People who enjoy riding YouBike have a deep impression of the comfort of the Velo saddle. The two spent a lot of time in discussions when they were crafting YouBike. “Public bicycles are exposed to the elements. They have to be waterproof and durable. Velo is a professional manufacturer for bicycle saddles. They developed this saddle especially for YouBike which we were very impressed and satisfied with. Whenever a foreign client inquires about it, I tell them that it's a product made by Velo!” Liu says that after many years

People still love to talk about the stories of Liu leading team cycling around Taiwan. He likes to cycle in eastern Taiwan, appreciating glorious sights of green mountains on one side and the vast sea coast on the other. Being caressed by fresh air and a gentle breeze are some of life’s great enjoyment. Bicycle is a business to Liu and it is his passion. Looking ahead, Liu says the electric bike is the product of the new era, but there is a lot of room for improvement, such as battery life, recharging convenience and water resistance. He expects to see more attractive bicycle products. Down-to-earth Liu laughs, “People are willing to spend money on attractive products. When someone pulls out his wallet, it means the bicycle is not only beautiful, but it meets his needs and touches his heart!” This is Liu's philosophy: “Dare to be the only one, then you can be No 1.”

身為台灣 YouBike 微笑單車的推手,巨大集團創辦人劉金標繼打造捷安特品牌後又寫下自行車產業的新歷史篇章,而讓 許多人重新愛上騎單車這件事,更是意義非凡。全球罕有自行車廠參與公共自行車系統的營運,因為可能衝擊本業,然 而劉金標卻毅然決然投入,並創下 YouBike 周轉率世界第一的奇蹟,『YouBike 剛開始真的很辛苦,不過騎自行車節能 減碳,可以健身又舒緩交通,好處很多。只要騎自行車的人不減少,自行車產業就有商機,如果都沒有人騎車,那車子 做得再好,再漂亮也沒有用。所以推廣騎自行車的風氣非常重要,現在我在台北街頭看到很多年輕人,甚至還有美女穿 短裙騎 YouBike,活潑又帥氣,真的覺得非常開心!』人稱標哥的劉金標 84 歲,依舊精神奕奕的分享他推 YouBike 的 心路歷程。 劉金標打造的 YouBike,用的坐墊就是維樂特別為 YouBike 量身訂做的產品,他和維樂創辦人余彩雲 Stella 更是超過 四十年的好友,喜歡騎 YouBike 的朋友肯定對坐墊的舒適印象深刻,當初在打造 YouBike 坐墊時,兩人花了許多心 思討論,『公共自行車在外面風吹日曬雨淋,所以一定要防水耐用,維樂是製作自行車坐墊的專業廠商,他們特別為 YouBike 開發這款坐墊,做出來後我們很佩服也很滿意,每次有國外客戶問起,我都跟他們說這是維樂生產的產品!』 劉金標強調,多年的合作下來,他特別感受余彩雲 Stella 帶領的維樂團隊,對不同的自行車種應該搭配什麼的坐墊,是 如此敬業而專業,對巨大集團來說,維樂是得力的夥伴廠商,也是為自行車打造完美騎乘經驗的重要推手。 2016 年劉金標將巨大集團董事長的重責大任交棒給年輕一代,他坦誠,自己從 38 歲開始專注在自行車產業的經營上, 時間一到要退休放手,的確有點不習慣,『剛開始談事情,看法不同會有些衝突,但我後來理解,年輕人的創意,是老 一輩遠遠不及的,他們經營模式也比較能符合時代潮流,這兩年我多看年輕人的做法,多聽他們的想法,現在慢慢習慣 了 ...』劉金標笑著說,原來學會閉嘴也是一門藝術。 劉金標多次領隊騎車環台的事蹟,總是為人津津樂道,他最喜歡騎乘在台灣東部,欣賞一邊是翠綠山巒一邊是遼闊海岸 的絕美景致,清新的空氣與微風輕拂,是人生一大享受。自行車對劉金標來說是事業,也是熱情所在,放眼未來,劉金 標說:『電動自行車是一個新時代的產品,不過電動自行車還有許多進步的空間,如電瓶容量、充電及防水如何更便利 等 ...』。他期待看到更多有魅力的自行車產品,務實的劉金標笑著說:『民眾願意消費的就是有魅力的產品!當他願意 掏錢,代表這台車不僅漂亮、符合需求、更打動他的心!』這就是『沒有唯一,哪來第一』的劉金標哲學!

Through the years, Merida has supported Velo as the two companies have grown together and struggled shoulder to shoulder. For Michael Tseng Sung-Chu, chairman and general manager of Merida, the past two years can be described as a time of challenge, yet also a time of harvest. AWESOME EVENT THE VELO TOUR DE TAIWAN 超讚!維樂四十週年慶環台之旅

The event was awesome. It was an incredible opportunity to be with the key leaders of the Velo business, stay in the best hotels, eat the finest food in the world, and be taken care of by the Giant Adventure team, every step along the way. The Velo Tour De Taiwan was a memorable event, which provided a tremendous amount of learning about Taiwan, the Taiwanese and the key icons of Velo. The group of 42 participants was diverse. Differences in size, age, fitness, gender, emotional state, and health conditions all suggested the tour would be a testing ground for the will power of this diverse group of leaders. The Velo Tour De Taiwan was an amazing journey covering more than 350 kilometers throughout the nor theastern perimeter of Taiwan. We covered more than 2,000 meters of cumulative altitude gain, over dangerous road conditions, in adverse weather conditions. It proved to be the perfect way to test this successful group of overachievers to put mind over matter for a personal accomplishment. Traditionally, this group is capable of solving challenging business situations and easily tuning them into profitable ventures. This event was different. It required each of them to dig down deep, overcome physical limitations for only self-gratification. When the event started, the skill level of almost everyone was low. Odd body positions, choppy pedaling styles, improper fitting gear and lack of confidence made for an interesting beginning. As the days wore on, the assimilation of cycling skills and cycling etiquette were incredible. The team cooperated together, learned from each other and worked harmoniously forming an elegant, skillful team of passionate cycling experts. They all possessed the skill and determination to conquer even the most challenging terrain in perfect form. It was an incredible transformation. Each day started and challenged everyone. Sunburn, saddle sores,

numb hands, cramps, dehydration, muscle fatigue, chronic knee injuries, back aches and other health issues existed, but not in their mind. They were to determined NOT to complain. Everyone started and finished each day with a smile. Someone said, "Pain is temporary, quitting is forever." It is clear, neither physical nor weather boundaries stopped this team. Within 3 days, everyone had put mind over matter, and earned the right to say. "We finished Velo Tour De Taiwan" Never before has such an influential industry group of leaders united together to strengthen their partnership as well as get a better product understanding. This team challenged their physical boundaries and won. It is a testimony to the Taiwanese, Stella and Ann's vision, and the Velo leadership. It is this perseverance and determination that has made Velo successful in their business and contributing to everyone’s cycling enjoyment around the world. I was happy to participate and now have both an appreciation of the beauty of Taiwan as well as respect for the people within Velo and the industry.

這活動太讚了!住最好的旅館,品嚐世界級美食,全程受到捷安 特旅行社團隊的照顧,這真是一個和維樂領導群相處的奇妙機 會。 旅程中有大量學習機會讓我了解台灣、台灣人和維樂關鍵指標人 物,這使得維樂環台之旅令人難忘。42 位參與者個個不同,身 材、年齡、體能、性別、情緒及健康狀況各異,讓這趟旅程成為 測試這群領導者意志力的考場。繞著台灣東北角騎超過 350 公 里,超過 2 千米的爬升高度,經過危險道路,承受惡劣天候,維 樂環台之旅令人驚嘆。事實證明這趟旅程是測試這群成功人士, 如何用心靈戰勝一切的絶佳方法。 一直以來,這群人可以解決商業挑戰,並輕鬆轉化成可獲利的投 資。但這次旅程不同,它需要每個人付出重大代價,克服體能限 制,只求滿足自我。剛開始時很有意思,幾乎每個人的技術都不 好,姿勢怪異、踩踏斷斷續續、檔速不當且缺乏自信。 隨著難熬的時間緩慢過去,他們對騎乘技術與規範的吸收消化相當驚人。成員彼此合作,互相學習且運作和諧,形成一個由熱 情的自行車專家組成的優雅技術團隊。他們都擁有技術與決心,要以完美形式征服最具挑戰的地形,真是令人難以置信的轉變。 每一天對每個人都充滿挑戰。曬傷、胯下痛、雙手麻木、痙攣、脫水、肌肉疲勞、慢性膝蓋傷害、背痛及其他健康問題一一出現, 但他們並不在乎。他們決心不再抱怨,每個人都微笑渡過每一天。有人說:「疼痛是暫時的,放棄是永遠的。」很顯然,無論 體能或天氣限制都無法阻礙這個團隊。

這 3 天裏,大家用心靈戰勝了一切,贏得資格説出:「我 們完成了維樂環台之旅」。從未見過,一群極具影響力 的企業領導人,像想更了解產品般,聯合起來強化夥 伴關係。這個團隊挑戰了他們的體能極限,並且獲 得勝利。這是對台灣人、Stella 和 Ann 的願景 以及維樂領導能力的一項見證。就是如此的 毅力與決心,讓維樂成功,並幫助全世界的 人盡享騎行樂趣。很高興參加這個活動, 現在我既欣賞台灣之美,又敬仰投入維 樂及這個產業的所有人士。

The huge success of the collection from the collaboration of Puma and Rihanna is a prime example. “Breaking Away” is a film launched in 1979 that tells the stor y of a young man fighting to realize his dream of becoming a road race cyclist. The film ignited the passion of many for bicycles, including Paul Yu, Puma General Manager in Taiwan, Hong Kong and Macau. “I love bicycles very much. Because of this movie, I began to practice cycling and follow the cycling team around. I even once represented Taipei in a bike race.” Paul was the rare cycling fanatic when the bicycle had not yet become a trendy sport in Taiwan. He looked for part-time work at a bicycle shop and when his father wanted to buy a motorcycle for him as a graduation gift, he chose the bicycle he loved so much instead. The founder of Taiwan's first men's fashion magazine Men’s Uno, Justine Lin, is exactly such a fortunate person. “The magazine finished printing on my birthday in July 1997; Men’s Uno officially hit store shelves on the weekend of July 7. It was still the era when there was no e-mail. When I went in to work on Monday, the girl from our Management Department told me that the office floor was littered with rolls of paper from the fax machine. Many years ago when I was sojourning in the Netherlands, some good friends of mine, a husband and wife, along with their friend, flew from Taiwan to the Netherlands with their bicycles for a cycle tour of Western Europe. With companions from afar, I who was almost a local, could not help extending my hospitality as the 'host' and invited them over for nice home-cooking and to catch up . At that time, I had plenty of experience hosting at home. The guests this time were very special. They did not drive a car nor did they take the subway to be able to easily reach my house in Rotterdam. They rode their bicycles, all the way from another city to here. After the long ride, they would be rather exhausted when they reached my home. I did not know if they'd be too tired to eat or they'd be so hungry that they could eat half a cow. I asked my friend two days in advance about what they wanted to eat that night. “As long as it is Taiwanese cuisine, it will be fine,” my friend told me frankly over the phone. “We've been eating Western cuisine and are starting to get homesick. But don' t go to too much trouble. We won't be able to eat anything too greasy after cycling. A bowl of dry noodles or minced pork rice, two stir-fry dishes and a hot pot of soup would be just fine.” It did not sound difficult, but to show my sincerity and to recharge the three riders, I went online to search for food suitable for cycling and came to two key points. First of all, after a long ride, it is better to eat a combination of protein and carbohydrate to replenish energy and repair muscles. For example, one could drink soy milk; eat cold noodle or granola bars. Secondly, long distance riding can easily result in muscle inflammation and soreness, so food that includes omega-3 is best. With these points in mind, the next task was to find out what kinds of food contain high units of omega-3. Avocado, seeds, including sesame and pumpkin, nuts, spinach, kale, and other dark green vegetables, eggs, soybeans, kidney beans and other beans; and salmon, mackerel, Pacific saury (pike mackerel) and horse mackerel, all contain quite a lot of omega-3. All of a sudden, I had an idea. Why didn' t I just let my friends “customize” their own cold noodle feast? I made a big pot of soba (buckwheat noodle), mixing it with sesame oil as the main dish. Cucumber slices, carrot slices, cold blended soybean sprout, kelp sprout, Korean kimchi, poached eggs and ready-made barbecued pork and Western ham were prepared as side dishes for the guests to combine freely with their noodles. I diced the salmon, added soy sauce,

mirin, rice wine and ginger to stew in the minced meat. Salmon is rich with omega-3 and can be cooked for a long time without getting dry. If the guest did not like the cold noodle, they could also have a bowl of hot Koshikikari rice with aromatic sweet and sour minced salmon, accompanied by stir-fried spinach and miso soup. This meal would be both very Taiwanese and filled with protein, carbohydrate, and omega-3. Late that afternoon close to dusk, the three riders arrived as promised. They were exhausted from the 90-kilometer ride, where they stopped here and there to take pictures. The only female rider said she had lost her appetite. However, that night, this petite lady not only ate a big plate of cold noodles but added in two bowls of minced salmon with rice – a great compliment to the dinner's host.

好幾年前,我旅居荷蘭,好友夫婦與友人帶著自行車,從台 北飛至低地國,展開鐵馬遊西歐的壯舉。有朋自遠方來,算 是在地人的我,怎可不略盡地主之誼,請他們吃頓家常菜, 好好聊聊天? 那時,我早已不乏在家中請客的經驗,這一回的賓客最是特 別,他們並非駕著轎車或搭地鐵,輕鬆來到我在鹿特丹市區 的住家,而是騎著自行車,從另一個城市邊騎邊遊而來。如 此騎行大半天,抵達目的地時體力應已消耗得差不多,不知 是會累得提不起胃口,還是餓得可以吞下半頭牛? 於是提早兩天問朋友,當晚想吃什麼?「只要是台灣味都 行,」好友在電話中率直表示,「這幾天都在吃洋餐,開 始想念家鄉味。不過也別太費事,騎完車後吃不下油膩的東 西,來碗乾拌麵或魯肉飯,炒兩個菜,煮一鍋湯就很好了。」 聽起來並不難,但為表示誠意,也為給三位騎士補充體力, 我上網搜尋單車運動後適合攝取的食物名單,從而歸納出兩 個重點─首先,長途騎行後,宜食用蛋白質和醣類的組合,

好補充能量並修復肌肉,比方說,可以喝豆漿,吃涼麵或穀 物棒。其次,長途騎車,肌肉易發炎痠疼,最好多吃含有 omega-3 的食物。 取 得 重 點 以 後, 接 著 得 研 究 哪 些 食 物 含 有 較 高 單 位 的 omega-3 ─酪梨、芝麻和南瓜籽等種籽、堅果、菠菜和甘藍 等深綠色蔬菜、蛋、黃豆與菜豆等豆類,還有鮭、鯖、秋刀 和竹筴魚,都有不少 omega-3。 我剎時有了主意,就「客製化」一頓涼麵宴吧。我煮好一大 鍋蕎麥麵,沖涼後拌麻油,是為主食。拌麵的澆頭有好幾樣, 包括黃瓜絲、胡蘿蔔絲、涼拌黃豆芽、海帶芽、韓國泡菜、 溏心蛋和現成叉燒肉與西式火腿,由各人自由組合。另外將 鮭魚切丁,加醬油、味醂、米酒和薑燉成「肉燥」。鮭魚不 但富含 omega-3,且久煮不柴,有了這濃香甘鹹的一鍋,加 上越光米飯,客人要是不愛涼麵,也能夠熱騰騰吃碗鮭魚肉 燥飯,搭配炒菠菜和味噌湯。這樣一來,這一頓晚餐既台味 十足,蛋白質、醣類與 omega-3 更是一樣不缺。 當天下午近傍晚,三位騎士如約到來,他們一路騎行九十公 里,走走停停,不時拍照,那會兒都累了,唯一的女騎士連 連表示沒胃口。然而那天晚上,這位嬌小的女士不但吃了一 大盤涼麵,還添了兩碗鮭魚肉燥飯,真是給足了我這位東道 主面子。

HOW TO SELF HEAL BY SOOTHING THE MERIDIANS 舒通經脈搞自救 Backache, sore legs and numbness after cycling? You may have hurt the meridians.Actually, this is what Western medicine calls, a sports injury. The use of acupuncture in the thousands of years old Chinese medicine tradition to swiftly cure injury is still seen as mystical by non-practitioners in the West. Dr Chang Yung-Ming, a Chinese medicine doctor who has been practicing in Taiwan for over 20 years, says that the point of acupuncture therapy is about soothing and channeling the meridians. 騎車出現背痛、腳酸麻,你可能傷了經脈!?其實這就是西方醫學所 的運動傷害!傳承數千年的中國醫學,使用針灸快速治病,常被西方 人士大呼神奇!在台灣行醫 20 餘年的中醫張永明博士說,針灸治療 重點就是舒通「經脈」。 Dr. Chang confirms cycling can train the meridians. However, riding for too long or in the wrong posture can damage the meridians, resulting in backache, soreness, ache, swelling, numbness of the legs, and other symptoms. The Du meridian (governor meridian) and the bladder meridian run through the entire back. When the bending position of the cycling posture is incorrect, the two meridians get hurt. Bending legs while cycling with a tilted pelvis or an unbalanced pedaling height of the two feet can damage the spleen, liver and kidney meridians in the inner legs.

Dr. Chang reminds riders that when pedaling, the back must be straightened before bending for ward. The best for ward bending angle is 60 degrees; do not bend like a shrimp. When pedaling with two legs, pay attention to the even raising of the legs; do not let one come higher than the other. It's better to take a break every 40 minutes to prevent over exercise. Also, because the pelvis is the fulcrum when cycling, the saddle that touches the pelvis needs to be carefully selected. It is better to choose a style with a hollow ventilation incision to reduce compressing of the perineum region; also pay attention to whether the saddle has a fine shock absorption function. 張醫師提醒騎士,騎行時背部一定要挺直再前彎,不 要像蝦子般彎曲背部,前彎角度以 60 度最佳;雙腿 踩踏則要注意兩腿平均往上提高,切忌一高一低。最 好每 40 分鐘休息一下,以免運動過度。此外,騎車 時支點是骨盆,與骨盆接觸的坐墊更要小心選擇,最 好選中空透氣挖孔款式,減少壓迫會陰部,同時也要 注意坐墊是否有良好的避震性能。

張博士表示,自行車運動能鍛練經脈值得肯定,但時間過長或是姿勢 不正確,反而損傷經脈,出現背痛、腳酸、痛、脹、麻等症狀。人體 的督脈與膀胱經貫穿整個背部,騎車彎腰姿勢不正會拉傷這兩條經 脈,而曲腿騎車,也會因骨盆歪斜或雙腳踏踩高度不平衡,損害位於 腿部內側的脾、肝、腎三條經絡。

In order to help cyclists reduce sports injury, Dr. Chang recommends two workouts for cyclists to practice at home, training and stimulating the meridians, as well as to relieve occasional minor soreness and pain. 為了協助騎士減少運動傷害,張博士特地提出兩套居家簡易功法 ,讓騎士們在家練習,鍛練活化經脈,偶有小酸痛時,也能自 我緩解。

Guiding massage〔導引按蹻法〕

(1) Stand with feet shoulderwidth apar t, hands hugging chest. Slowly inhale and exhale several times until breaths are smooth and even. ( 一 ) 腳與肩同寬,手環抱胸前, 慢慢吸、吐氣數次直至氣息調和。

Reverse training〔反方向訓練法〕

Dr. Chang uses the guiding practice in the famous ancient text “Yi Jin Jing (classics of tendon changing)” and adds in massaging the mingmen (gate of vitality) to vitalize the kidney meridian. 張博士採用中國著名古藉「易筋經」中的導引功,再加上推按命門以活化腎經。

(2) Rub both hands until they are warm. ( 二 ) 搓熱雙手

( 3 ) P re s s o n e i t h e r s i d e of the spine (mingmen, gate of vitality) and massage from top to bottom to vitalize the kidney meridian. Repeat steps 2 and 3 for about 5 minutes. ( 三 ) 按 住 下 背 部 脊 椎 兩 側( 命 門),由上往下推按,活化腎經。 重覆二、三動作約五分鐘。

Since the cycling posture is like the curve of a shrimp, this workout is a reverse exercise to correct the meridians in the over bending back. Practice this workout 3 to 5 times a day, with 15 to 20 lifts each time. 張博士說,因騎車姿勢很像彎曲的蝦子,故需以反方向運動方式,將背部彎曲過 度的經脈矯正回來。以下功法需一天練習 3-5 回,每回 15-20 次。

(1) Using waist as the fulcrum, gradually raise both arms and both legs, separately. Repeat five times to slowly raise the limbs to their maximum. This workout trains the du and bladder meridians. The patient can practice this on his/her own. (2) Kneeling with four limbs on the ground, extend the left leg and right arm for about 10 seconds then rest. Repeat 5 times before switching to the other side. This workout trains the spleen, liver and kidney meridians on the inner thigh. ( 一 ) 以腰為支點,分別抬高患者雙手、雙腳,分五次逐漸提升高度直到極限,可訓練督脈與膀胱經。患者亦可自行鍛練。 ( 二 ) 四肢著地呈跪姿,將左腳、右手推伸出去,約十秒後休息,重覆 5 次,再換邊操作,可訓練大腿內側的脾、肝、腎經。

VELO INVITES FRIENDS FROM ALL OVER THE WORLD TO RIDE 848 KILOMETERS AROUND TAIWAN Velo turns 40 this year. In 2017 and 2018, for two years in a row, CEO Stella Yu Tsai-Yun, who is nearly 70, and VP Chen An-Rong personally led senior staff of Velo and Velo's friends worldwide to celebrate by cycling around Taiwan. In 2017, they rode from Dajia in Taichung to Hualien, covering 531 kilometers in 5 days. In 2018, they also invited friends of Velo to join the ride - Giant Group, Specialized of the USA, Shanghai Phoenix, Fairy Bike Manufacturing Company, KMC (Kuei Meng Chain) International Inc., Italy's Prologo, and over 20 people to ride from Yilan back to Dajia covering 317 kilometers in 3 days. Two years and two tours around Taiwan totaled 848 kilometers. Interestingly enough, the southern and northern tours seen separately, look like the “V” of Velo; when combining the two routes, they happen to ring around Taiwan, making a perfect circle.

WORLD’S 1ST FIRST EVER PLASTIC ROAD BIKE PATH IN THE NETHERLANDS Zwolle of the Netherlands initiated the first bicycle road paved with recycled plastics. This 30-meters long plastic road was constructed with recycled plastic of around 500,000 plastic caps, and is estimated to be 2 to 3 times more durable than conventional roads. The road uses hollow design making it light weight and is easy for both pipeline installation and water drainage. It is also fitted with sensors to monitor temperature, the passing number of bicycles, etc. Inventors Anne Koudstaal and Simon Jorritsma think “this is a big step towards future roads made of recycled plastic.” However, environmental protection activists Friends of the Earth say reducing the use of plastic remains the solution to follow. 30 MINUTES CYCLING AND LAUNDRY AT THE SAME TIME, TAIWANESE STUDENT WINS MEDAL AT INVENTOR’S TRADE FAIR Doing laundry while riding a bicycle? Jian Shi-Ting, a student from The Affiliated Senior High School of National Chi Nan University, and two students from National Caotun Commercial & Industrial Vocational Senior High School, co-invented the tumble washing machine powered by a bicycle. The roller is placed on top of the back wheel. After adding in water and metallic soap, when the bicycle wheel spins, the roller rolls with it. Cycle for 30 minutes and the laundry is done. This environmentally friendly and energy conserving invention won silver medal at the 2018 iENA inventor's trade fair in Nuremburg of Germany. Jian Shi-Ting said, “The oxidation of the metallic soap eliminates the dirt and odour of clothing. After PE class, simply throw the clothing into the washer and ride 30 minutes home. 296KM AT SPEED OF 296 KILOMETERS, USA FEMALE RIDER BREAKS GUINNESS WORLD RECORD Can you imagine cycling at the speed of an airplane? Forty-five year old US female biker Denise MuellerKorenek reached a speed of up to 296 kilometer per hour in Utah – the same speed as a Boeing 747 before it takes off. She broke the 268 kilometers per hour Guinness World Record maintained for 23 years by Dutchman Fred Rompelberg, who set the record in 1995. A guiding vehicle towed Denise's bicycle until the speed reached 80 kilometers per hour; after the towing line was dropped, Denise continued to speed up. To create a new world record, in addition to Denise's own strength, the special guiding vehicle reduced the wind resistance and increased the propulsive force, a 4-kg racing apparel, a specially-lengthened carbon fiber bike frame and large 17-inch wheels also contributed greatly to the success. The Elevate-KHS Pro Cycling team is beginning their 9th year of racing, with Southern California as it's homebase. The team began as a local criterium hit-squad and has blossomed into one of the best Pro UCI teams in the country, which is very exciting. Nestled in suburbia of Southern California, training routes can place a team rider on a mountain pass or along the Pacific Ocean on any given day. If motivated enough, one could ride in both elements in one day! Many of the team riders have enjoyed training in the Redlands area over the years, where the climbing takes them up past 8,000ft in elevation into the forest and during the winter, onto snowlined roads. In stark contrast to the bustling metropolitan cities below, these mountain roads provide the riders with peace and quiet, zero stop lights and the high probability of seeing several species of wildlife along the way. During the summer and fall, these roads become a favorite to climb as with each mile ascended, the temperatures drop, ultimately being 15-20 degrees F cooler than the valley floor below. Riding in 80F is much more enjoyable, and allows the riders to dig deeper as they pedal and enjoy a longer ride. This region provides a drastic shift in seasons as winter begins and snow falls, making the mountain roads impassable by bike. Fortunately, the routes closer to the coast and at lower elevation - just an hour away - offer more great opportunities to train. The weather remains temperate and allows the athletes to log long miles on the bike, taking in desert and

coastal views along the way. The big crowds can be avoided by riding in areas such as Palm Springs or Borrego Springs which are in the desert. Riders can also head to the Pacific Coast Highway along the ocean to enjoy a long, flat ride and stop for a coffee along the way. The Southern California region provides the riders of the Elevate-KHS Pro Cycling Team the chance to train at elevation to prepare for UCI events such as the Tour of Utah, as well crisping their tan lines along the beach. One could ride at the beach and the mountains all in one day as well. A ‘Bucket List’ ride is to begin in Big Bear, CA at 8,000ft and ride all the way to Huntington Beach, CA at sea level and the Pacific Ocean. This route is 100 miles long and would make for a great day of training, soaking in all the different terrains and climates of the area from mountain pine trees to desert scape and finishing at the ocean. Brian's bio "Brian McCulloch is beginning his 9th season with the Elevate-KHS Pro Cycling Team, and his 3rd year racing as a UCI Professional. A resident of Yucaipa, CA, he has access to train in beautiful mountains as well as by the ocean. In 2018, Brian won the Belgian Waffle Ride - a mixed terrain event covering 138 miles and his countless hours training in the mountains near his home helped prepare him for this feat. 2019 環台公路賽 毅百特 KHS 車隊 成績亮眼

2019 TOUR DE TAIWAN ELEVATE-KHS PRO CYCLING TEAM SUCCESS STORY The 2019 Tour de Taiwan debuted in March, and Elevate-KHS Pro Cycling team of the USA turned in a handsome p e r f o r m a n c e . To p r e p a r e f o r t h e competition, the team trained on Taiwan's Fengguizui (known as the 'mouth of a wind cabinet' for its fierce winds). Getting familiar early with the local terrain paid off. Stage 4 of the Tour de Taiwan started from the Nantou County Government and ended at the Sun Moon Lake Xiangshan Activity Center. The route passed through the Jiji Green Tunnel, Sun Moon Lake Reservoir, Snake Kiln, Puli Winery and other famous attractions. However beautiful the scener y, the undulating mountain roads are a big test of skill, physical strength and speed for the racers. The distance of Stage 4 totaled 166.56 km. It was the last 4 km, when the riders become a large group again, that Elevate-KHS Pro Cycling team member James Piccoli surged out at the last minute to win Stage 4 as well as the sprint double champion. This year's Tour de Taiwan showcased 20 teams from the world over. More than 180 elite racers competed for the championship yellow jersey. Velo was also one of the sponsors of Elevate-KHS Pro Cycling team of the USA, adding brilliance to the fiercely competitive spirit of sports and cycling combined. HOW TO BIKE UP “THE WALL” 如何騎自行車爬「牆」

CLIMBS LIKE IL MURO DI SORMANO E GHISALLO, WHERE THE FIRST PROFESSIONAL RACE WAS HELD A CENTURY AGO, STILL REMAIN - FOR COMPETITIVE AND NONCOMPETITIVE CYCLISTS - THE PLACE TO IDOLIZE. 一世紀前舉辦第一場專業賽事 爬坡段『Il Muro 牆』和『Ghisallo 吉塞羅』 至今仍是競賽與業餘單車騎士的朝拜聖地

by Giovanni Vegezzi 文-吉歐凡尼 ‧ 維格志 Professionals and amateur cyclists called it simply “Il Muro”, “The Wall”. This climb, with an average gradient of 17% and a maximum of 25%, is known as one of the most severe to have been used in road cycling, although it is not located on the top of the Alps, but in the sweeter Prealps, or the Alpine foothills. “Il Muro” is a narrow and steep road in Sormano, in the hills between the two branches of Como Lake where Italian cycling grew its roots. In this tiny triangle of little mountains surrounded by the lake, there are some of the most legendary climbs of cycling: not only “Il Muro, but also the Ghisallo climb that leads to one of the iconic sanctuaries in this sport.

Tradition is still alive in Sormano and Ghisallo Years ago, local authorities decided to build another road to get to the top of the hill, because “Il Muro” was deemed too steep even for cars, and the road was closed and abandoned. After pressure from local cyclists, it was restored in 2006, and now features split-times and quotes stencilled on the road from riders from the 1960s era. Every meter of road now indicates the altitudinal range in order to let the cyclist know how much longer to go. “Il Muro” has 4 hairpins: between the third and the fourth turns the road emerges from the woods to a beautiful - and breathtaking, if you have still enough breath after the climb! - view of the mountains surrounding Como Lake.

After its restoration, the climb was re-inserted into the route during the 2012 edition of the Tour of Lombardy, about 80 km from the finish of the race and before the less brutal Madonna del Ghisallo climb. A few kilometres away from “Il Muro”, Ghisallo (10.6km long, with an average gradient of 5.2% and stretches of over 10%) has been one of the few fixed locations of the Tour of Lombardy for more than a century. The climb starts near Bellagio at the shore of Como Lake, and heads up to the church of Madonna del Ghisallo, the patroness of cyclists. At the top of this mountain pass - with an altitude of 754 meters that dominates Como Lake, visitors can find, not only a sanctuary, but also a small and modern museum opened in 2010 that is devoted to the men and women who have used and continue to use the bicycle in ever yday life and in spor ts. T h e p ro m o te r s of t h e m u s e u m have chosen this tiny but highly s y m b o l i c l o c a t i o n t o” s p r e a d worldwide the two-wheels' scene” and dedicate it to “the athletes, bicycle manufacturers, organizers, sports club directors, journalists and many other perhaps less wellknown but equally important par ticipants” according to one official presentation. Actually the Ghisallo Museum collects the most interesting magazines and volumes regarding cycling preser ved in a

CHERISH YOUR BIKE, LET CIRCULAR ECONOMY SUSTAINABLE 珍惜自行車 讓循環經濟更永續 by Eri Ikeda

One day when I was a freshman, I was running late to a 9am lecture. I cycled like mad all the way from home to the station nearby my school. Although I cannot recall why I did not park my bicycle at the designated area offered by the university (probably because of a certain convenience I perceived), I left my bicycle in front of a local supermarket nearby. This area was usually full of parked bicycles from early morning till late evening. After coming back from school, I found that my bike disappeared from the

spot and in its place was a big notice on the road saying “your bike has been removed. Come and pick up at xyz (a storage point) within 2 months”. This meant my behavior was regarded as illegal according to the local code! A couple of days later, I went to xyz to pick up my bike, apologized, and paid 3,000 yen as a penalty. To m y s u r p r i s e , i n 2 0 1 6 a l o n e , statistics show that the number of bikes removed is approx. 1.24 million in total! Among this 1.24 million, about 60% is returned to the owner,

and roughly 20% is either recycled or shipped abroad. So where does the remaining 20% go? The answer is waste ! Re c e n t l y, p u b l i c a t t e n t i o n a n d awareness to waste has increased a s m a n y p e o p l e b e c o m e m o re environmentally conscious, and the idea of “sharing economy” and “circular economy” become more popular, even for business. I feel that people are particularly aware of plastic waste in the ocean these days, you might have heard from the news about large corporations banning

single use plastic. In comparison, media and public attention to bicycle waste remains low, but the problem is quite serious as evidenced by the aforementioned abandoned bicycles in Japan. Moreover, in Holland, about 12,000 to 15,000 bicycles are fished annually from canals in Amsterdam alone. A bicycle is not a cheap investment, but still affordable to many people in comparison to cars or motorcycles. So even if you lose or damage one, whilst at first you might be shocked and angry, you then start to think “let me get a new one”. In Japan, the most basic type of bicycle can be bought at around or for even less than € 100. For now, what is left and required seems to be our individual and conscious behavior change. Our society is embedded with consumerism and we can get many things in much cheaper price. This leads to the idea of just throw away and buying new stuff endlessly. Now why don’t we start thinking again about the consequences of purchasing goods? I do admit that it is difficult to live without buying anything, so one thing we can do is to buy a good quality stuff and use it longer with a regular and proper maintenance, even if initial investment cost is relatively higher. Japanese word “Mottainai” means “what a waste! ”, which Nobel Prize winner Dr. Wangari Maathai made it popular to the world by initiating the “Mottainai campaign”. Give a bit

CITY OF SYDNEY CRAFTS 12-YEAR PROJECT TO CREATE A BICYCLE-FRIENDLY CITY 雪梨市政府 12 年計劃 打造自行車友善城市 by Emma Chu

As Australia's biggest city, Sydney not only flourishes with culture but also in its industry, commerce and arts. It boasts beautiful harbors, bays and renowned beaches, much-admired national parks and the world famous Sydney Opera House. However, Sydney's rugged and uneven terrain and its narrow sidewalks and streets are rather disadvantageous by nature to developing bicycle traffic; which is also why bicycle use in Sydney ranks low among all the major cities in Australia. On November 20 of 2018, the City government announced a 12-year project (2018 to 2030) , hoping to build a city even more friendly to bicycles. This project has four strategies listed below: 1.Build a Bike Network The City of Sydney found out that m o re t h a n h a l f t h e c o m m u te r s that work in the City live in the neighboring districts, and over 150,000 cars entering Sydney have a commute distance of less than 5 kilometers. Once a convenient and safe bicycle transportation network is built to connects the City of Sydney and the neighboring districts, that would encourage commuters to use bicycles for work, which could achieve the goal of reducing cars entering the City and decrease traffic jams. 2 . S u p p o r t Pe o p l e t o St a r t a n d Continue Riding Different groups such as school

children learning how to ride bicycles; families using bicycles as a means of transporting goods; office workers commuting by bicycles; retired people and tourists using bicycles to tour around the city, et al, will be included when promoting bicycles in order to display the diverse use of cycling and its attraction across all age and social groups. 3.Support Business to Encourage Staff to Ride The City government and local enterprises have been installing terminal facilities in the downtown center and office buildings, such as safe bicycle parking garages, lockers and shower rooms, etc. These facilities increase the convenience of bicycle commuters, and address the problem of riders not having a place to be able to change into proper office attire. 4. Lead By Example The City of Sydney wants to make Sy d n e y a b i c y c l e - f r i e n d l y c i t y and the best way is to be its own role model. The City government encourages its staff to cycle to work; it sets terminal facilities for bicycles and provides bicycles for staff to use to save on transportation time between meetings, visits, and out for office business, et al. Also, it holds a monthly lunchtime ride to encourage staff to practice cycling and give those new to cycling a chance to learn.

The primar y goal of this 12-year project is to reach a 10% bicycle riding rate for commuters to the City by 2030, elevate the safety and usage volume of cyclists, and meet the target rates for each action plan. The City of Sydney decided to create a bicycle-friendly city, and serve as the role model for other cities. 澳洲第一大城雪梨,不但人文薈萃,工 商藝文發達,擁有美麗港灣和著名海 灘,還有多個令人稱羨的國家公園和舉 世聞名的雪梨歌劇院,是個得天獨厚的 天之驕子。然而雪梨地勢高低起伏,且 人行道及車道狹小,對於發展自行車交 通而言, 先天條件相當不良,造成雪梨 的自行車使用度,一直落後其他澳洲主 要城市。 2018 年 11 月 20 日,雪梨市政府宣布 通過一項 12 年計劃 (2018-2030), 希望打造一座對自行車更加友善的城 市。這個 12 年計劃分成 4 大方向: 一、建立自行車交通網 雪梨市政府調查發現,雪梨市區工作通 勤人口有一半以上住在鄰近區域,15 萬多輛車子進入雪梨市區只行駛不到五 公里。若能建立安全方便的自行車交通 網,連接雪梨市區及鄰近區域,就能鼓 勵這些通勤族利用自行車上下班,達到 減少車輛進入雪梨市區及降低交通壅塞 的目的。 二、幫助人民開始並持續騎車 在宣傳鼓勵騎車時,囊括不同族群。如 學齡兒童學騎自行車、家庭使用自行車 載運物品、上班族騎自行車通勤、退休 族及觀光客騎自行車遊覽市區等,展現 自行車的跨族群性及多元用途。


COLUMN 三、與企業合作鼓勵員工騎自行車 雪梨市政府與當地企業已陸續在市中心 及商業辦公大樓設置自行車終點設施, 包括安全的停車場、可上鎖的置物櫃及 淋浴間等,這不但能增加騎自行車通勤 的方便性,也不會讓人擔心上班儀容不 整。 四、雪梨市政府以身作則 雪梨市政府要帶領雪梨成為自行車友善 都市,最佳的方式是以身作則,設立典 範。市政府鼓勵員工騎自行車通勤,除 了設置自行車終點設施外,還提供自行 車給員工使用,以節省會議往來、外出 拜訪或洽公等交通時間。另外,每個月 還舉辦午餐自行車時間,鼓勵員工練習 騎車,讓新手也有機會練習。 這個 12 年計劃的主要目標包含,2030 年進入市區的交通方式有 10% 為騎乘 自行車、提升自行車的安全性及使用 量、各項行動方案的達成率等。雪梨市 政府持續且堅定地朝向自行車友善城市 邁進,足以成為其他城市的參考借鏡。

They are the “beehive masters” led by Eric who once worked in the technology industry in Taiwan. Over a decade ago, he went cycling for the first time with his friends and fell in love with cycling. Balance is the greatest feature of this saddle. Its alluring appearance and weight satisfy the look and function and fulfill the demand that most cyclists have for road bicycles.
