e are ready to experience and welcome spring’s warmth and gentle ambiance. With the recent tragic natural disasters, it is hoped that the coming spring sunshine can bring inner warmth to those who have suffered losses during the earthquakes and tsunamis. Two of our advertisers were actually traveling in some risky areas during that time, and luckily made it home unscathed. We take a moment to express our hope that the aftermath and turmoil left behind in Japan, as well as the unrest in Libya are quickly resolved, to avoid more loss. With such current event challenges, it is comforting to know our own communities continue to focus on improvement and concern for education and the arts. I am excited to be working with our vivacious and hardworking “Friends of the Los Gatos Library” organization. The energy and excitement surrounding this epic venture in its final phases is

The community coming together to improve and create an academic, yet entertaining and fun gathering place which couples old world library research and reading potential with state of the art high tech wireless networking features, in a gorgeously designed building is just what I would expect for Los Gatos. There have already been fundraising events even prior to the official launch and with this dynamic group, it should not take long to reach their financial goals to put the finishing touches on the new library. Stay tuned for many exciting plans and events to develop. Spring is near and so comes the ‘May flowers’ and the draw to spend time outdoors. One Los Gatos group focuses on combining outdoor pass time with the arts. The Festival Theatre Ensemble is currently working tirelessly preparing and promoting The Los Gatos Shakespeare Festival happening this July. This issues’ story regarding the behind the scene festival support, along with the talented Shakespeare production director and cast, lends an overview from the director of what to look forward to, as well as, the origins of this creative bunch and the festival itself, as they paved the way for local artists for years to come. Don’t miss their plays this season as they celebrate year ten in Los Gatos.

A dynamic team of community leaders have launched the public phase of a capital campaign to raise funds for furniture and equipment in the new Los Gatos Public Library. The Community Gifts Committee, pictured here along with Town leaders, got to preview the building at their kick-off meeting in February.

Realizing the Dream

of a new Los Gatos Public Library By Lorraine Gabbert

T

he first day of spring heralded not only blossoming flowers, new growth and life, but also the start of the community fundraising phase for the new Los Gatos Public Library. “The Town of Los Gatos will open the doors to a 30-year dream,” says former mayor, Sandy Decker. “It’s a place where a multigenerational population will come together, not only for the wonder of the written word, but for community.” The building, which cost about $18.4 million, was largely financed through redevelopment funds. The next step is raising money for fixtures, furnishings and equipment. With a rallying cry of, “It’s Now. It’s New. It’s Ours!” the Friends of the Los Gatos Public Library (Friends) embarked upon a capital development campaign to raise about $2.1 million. Through major gifts, they’ve nearly achieved their goal. On March 20, 2011, they were excited to ‘spring’ into action to engage their community’s support in raising the remaining $250,000. On June 21, 2010, the summer solstice and day of most sunlight, ground was broken for the new library. Like a plant, it has taken root; its soil enriched with nutrients ranging from historical archives and classic novels to best sellers and the latest technology. Like a majestic tree, it will shelter its inhabitants, its floors/branches offering a social center, as well as a place of learning, including a bumped out ‘tree house’ for teens. It is also environmentally friendly; so much natural light will pour through its three-story wall of windows that on sunny

days, artificial lighting won’t be needed. Remnants from the two huge islands of plastic floating in the Pacific find new life in an art installation in the Children’s Library; its mosaic of circles includes cozy reading nooks. A Children’s Garden lends a location to stop and smell the flowers, or read a good book while the sun warms your shoulders. Elements of nature wind their way throughout the space. A lustrous wooden ceiling stretches above the lobby. Sunlight shines through translucent glass adorned with forms of communication including letters and phrases, music notations and scientific formulas. A starry sky twinkles from the ceiling in the Children’s Library. Bronze leaves of sculpted oaks and redwoods are inscribed with the names of donors on the patio and picturesque views of the tree-lined rolling hills gracing Los Gatos can be glimpsed from the second floor. Additional features include a central seating area alongside the latest bestsellers, a refreshment cart and bookstore. A den setting invites visitors to sit and sip a latte while reading newspapers and periodicals beside the fire. Six-foottall sculpted books grace the Children’s garden, their spines sporting titles of childhood favorites. A grand staircase arcs gracefully, beckoning to the second floor. There, in addition to a grand reading room, is a local history section, complete with research and browsing materials dating to the nineteenth century, and archival photographs, about 6,000 of which appear on a large screen in a continuous display.

cometh from mountain and plain, And this the sweet song that is ringing, The springtime is coming again.

“It is so crowded, we have to move the furniture around to make sitting space for the children,” says Friends Board Secretary Toni Blackstock, who takes her grandson, Jake, there. “The Children’s Room in the new library will be wonderful.” “Your children will no longer be spilling out onto the courtyard because there isn’t room for storytelling,” says Decker. “Teenagers will no longer be stacked in the stacks and we seniors will finally have computers for our computer dating.” There will also be room for children’s programs, lecture series and book clubs, as well as many more computers, which currently face a wait list to use. “The library isn’t just for reading books,” says Blackstock. “It’s a community gathering place.” Community Gifts Committee Co-Chairs Jill Logar and Kristina Strand agree. “This library is for everyone,” says Logar. “Let’s gather together and make it our community living room.” They encourage the public to partner with the Friends to bring the library to life through attending fundraising events and receptions. There are also many sponsorship opportunities around the building. The names of those who donate $10,000 or more will appear on plaques on a major donor wall. “I really hope the community comes forward to support this,” says Blackstock. “The building will be built…but what we put inside it will make a huge impact on how much people are able to enjoy it.” Please visit: www.friendsoflglibrary.org to volunteer, donate, or for more information.

The new 30,000 square-foot facility, with its state-of-the-art technology and design, is scheduled to open in January 2012. Former Library Director Peggy Conaway kindly shared a poetic virtual walk-through the site, which informed and inspired the descriptions above. “We’ve been looking forward to a new library for a very long time,” says Friends President Carol Hamilton. “It will improve the town. Our library is small and we can’t do a lot of things we could if we had more space. I think everybody will enjoy it.” The current 1,400 square-foot library accommodates about 209,000 visits per year, supporting a population of about 30,000. Built in 1965 to serve 9,000 residents, it is understandably cramped.

y customers are welcome like family.” Says Nick Difu, proprietor and chef of Nick’s on Main, an American Bistro located at 35 East Main Street in Los Gatos. The camaraderie of the customers and the employees was apparent and extended to fellow customers. Nick purposely creates a warm, intimate family atmosphere, keeping tables close together to encourage customers to mingle. His philosophy worked well, as we did make a friend at the next table before our meal was complete. The talented and experienced entrepreneur served a tantalizing fare, mentioning the menu doesn’t deviate too much too often, as he has many regulars that expect to find their favorite flavorful dish prepared to suit their palate.

Its mission is to enrich our community through the universal language of dance. Los Gatos Ballet offers educational and outreach programs. The company is hosting a dance-in-schools program called Leaps and Bounds, bringing dance to underserved schools, as well as providing mentoring opportunities for the students of Los Gatos Ballet School.

I was very impressed, for instance, by the “Loch Duart” salmon with Dungeness crab over lemon risotto and sautéed asparagus, and definitely envision returning to experience that succulent entre once again. The pheasant, as well, was a treat beyond measure. The most unique part of the Nick’s experience, was interestingly a meal once considered quite common. I didn’t venture to prepare it for my children in my adult life, from sheer overindulgence. I was incredibly surprised to find that I enjoyed eating a meal Nick entitles Nani’s meatloaf. Who would have thought? The flavorsome spices delighted us and the highly pleasant consumption of this dish, erased the status quo meatloaf concept I had prior to trying Nick’s meatloaf. Nick’s menu is accompanied by a tasty wine list, sure to please – especially the long list of reds. For a yummy time, we definitely recommend visiting this quaint dining establishment.

Experts in Personal Training, Rehabilitation Exercises, Nutrition & Gym Memberships

M A R C H - A P R I L 2 0 11

This is one of many reminders I plan to share. Sometimes we know our nutritional facts, but let this knowledge slip to eat a quick snack without consciously considering the consequences.

|

s a Registered Dietitian, I have completed the academic and experiential requirements established by the state qualifying me as a nutrition expert. In addition, I have an advanced degree in Exercise Science, and I scrupulously maintain my continuing education in order to give the best advice I can, using the most current research. My personal philosophy revolves around the fact that the majority of my clientele are like me. We juggle family (I have 2 kids ages 20 and 10) and work responsibilities while trying to keep ourselves balanced and healthy. I believe that small changes in eating and activity (over time) can add up to significant improvements in energy, stress level, health, and aesthetics. My first nutrition note involves taking care of the heart. Because heart disease is the #1 killer of both men and women, it is important to choose “heart healthy” foods. One of the best ways of protecting your heart is to improve the amount of HDL (high density lipoprotein) cholesterol in your system. Remember that HDL plays the “good” role in that it carries excess cholesterol away to be excreted. Trans-Fat reverses the action of HDL and deposits excess cholesterol back in the arteries. “Zero trans-fat” or “trans-fat free” claims are not a guarantee. The government has allowed these claims on packaging when there is .5 grams of trans-fats or less per serving. Here’s the catch, the manufacturer gets to define “serving size.” This means a company can state there is only .5g trans-fats per serving of chips, and define the serving size as only 2 chips. You can see how this could mislead and your intake can add-up. To optimize your health, you should completely avoid all trans-fats. Protect your heart and read labels. Additionally, if the words “partially hydrogenated” appear in the ingredient list…find an alternate product.

THE

LOS GATOS

SHAKESPEARE FESTIVAL Celebrating

T

he Festival Theatre Ensemble (FTE) proudly announces The Los Gatos Shakespeare Festival’s 10th anniversary. The seven-member strong FTE board whose goal is to build awareness for the festival locally as well as reach out to other neighboring communities, are hard at work preparing to make this year their best ever. The concept began many years ago and took some planning, as board member Mary Tomasi-Dubois recalls. Mary works with her husband, Paul Dubois, at their Los Gatos security engineering firm, is also a local writer, and hosts the television show Word Sleuth - Detective of all Things Written. Although she only recently joined FTE last year, Mary is active in various town organizations and was instrumental in building the bandstand in Oak Meadow Park as well as, originally bringing the festival to town. Mary joined the Los Gatos Community Foundation in 1995. Their main goal at the time was to refurbish the historical copula that once sat atop the Lyndon Carriage House (a famous hotel where the Toll House is now located). Once refurbished, they sought to build a support structure for the copula and hopefully place it in a public space for all to enjoy. Oak Meadow Park seemed to be the most logical location to build such a large structure - to match the copula’s architectural features. The bandstand concept was conceived and a written design implemented to represent the outlines of the original carriage house, but there was still a lot of work to be done. The foundation had to work through town policies in order to receive location approval. Some argued the structure would not get used. That triggered a memory with Mary, to a time years earlier, when she and Paul were attending an entertaining, murder mystery themed dinner in Los Altos. The play was an original and after the performance, Mary introduced herself

to the artistic director, Bruce De Les Dernier. Their conversation had led to discussion of William Shakespeare plays (festivals) that Mr. De Les Dernier and his troupe were presenting throughout the state. At the time, Mary had asked if he would be interested in doing something similar in Los Gatos, and he had been very receptive. “I remembered that conversation,” Mary said. “And I called Bruce and asked if he was still interested. He confirmed that he was eager to make Los Gatos the ‘home base’ for his festivals.” This idea of having an annual Shakespeare festival in Los Gatos was presented to the council and the concept appealed to everyone. The bandstand plan was approved, then built and donated to the town, and The Los Gatos Shakespeare Festival was born with the bandstand as the backdrop. Because of her continued passion for the arts, Mary joined FTE to assist in building awareness for the festival. FTE Chair Vicki Carter Alexander has been a LG Shakespeare festival supporter since its inception, and she’s proud to be on the board of such a talented ensemble. Vicki, who has a teaching MA and manages a local business, is also very impressed with Bruce De Les Dernier’s direction and adaptations. “I’ve been enjoying the Los Gatos Shakespeare Festival performances for the last nine years, and I’m really excited about our 10th anniversary season this summer! Over the years, I’ve had the pleasure of watching many theater-goers (from pre-teen and teen through adult) enjoy these performances. Some patrons have mentioned they may not have had the best Shakespeare experience in school and because of this were uncertain whether they would enjoy our presentation. These same people always seem so satisfied after watching our plays. It’s a pleasure to see the audience really understanding and

goal is complete client enjoying Shakespeare, often for the first time. Bruce, our Artistic Director, and our ensemble are wonderfully adept at making the performances accessible and fun for everyone.” The FTE board also includes members with acting talent. Leslie Newport has a SJSU BA in theatre arts/drama, and a West Valley College accounting AS. Leslie has performed with Bruce since 1987, and became FTE treasurer in 1996. Other theatre groups she has performed with are: Broadway West, Foothill Music Theatre, Theatre in the Mountains, Santa Clara Players, Menlo Players Guild, West Valley College, San Jose City College Shakespeare Festival, and South Bay Musical Theatre. Kimberly Wood, another actor working with Bruce and current FTE secretary, has been involved with FTE since 1995, filling roles both on and off stage. She resides in historic New Almaden with her boyfriend and 2 cats. FTE has three additional members. Gregory Malley, who operates Nobel Group, has two daughters age nine and eleven years old who have been “enjoying Shakespeare in the Park under the stars since they were three and five years old.” Becky Robinson, a local teacher, writer and proud parent of two, has been interested in theater for many years; especially since her son started acting. “After ushering and selling refreshments at many high school productions, I decided to formalize my interest in theater and love for Shakespeare by joining the FTE Board of Directors in 2011. I remain dedicated to the pursuit of Shakespeare perfection under the twinkling stars of Los Gatos and Los Altos and looks forward to many more years of service.”

Bruce De Les Dernier

Update From the Director

I

Meet Bruce De Les Dernier

t was a pleasure to meet the talented and humble co-founder and artistic director of Festival Theatre Ensemble, Bruce De Les Dernier. Speaking with him, his passion, pride and enthusiasm shows as he prepares his team for the upcoming July performances. He is a local family man, with wife of twenty-five years, Eileen, and seventeen year old son, Robin. Bruce, who graduated from SJSU theatre arts department in ’76, has been acting and directing for thirty years, having directed over forty main stage Shakespearean productions, and has written ten plays that have all been produced. Bruce has acted many roles, such as King Lear, Richard III, Prospero, and Henry IV, but currently enjoys directing the Los Gatos Shakespeare festival. Prior to a production, his ensemble rehearses for about three months, so the entire project runs five and a half months. The company presents in a north bay city for a month prior to moving to Los Gatos. During one of the Los Gatos evening productions they schedule a “Fight For a Cure” night to benefit a specific cause. (Last year’s beneficiary was the Alzheimer’s Association.) What does it take to move the show from one city to another? It takes four 24’ fleet truckloads! They rent three trucks to hull their impressive stage that includes a roofline, flagpoles, and 220 seats that make up the 9 viewing rows. Moving such a large stage is no easy feat, but allows them to keep their high standards, offering all the amenities of an indoor theatre but under the stars. Bruce proudly boasts they do not have a bad seat in the house. The Los Gatos production begins set installation July 5th,then productions start July 15th and each subsequent weekend of July they will perform Friday, Saturday and Sunday through the first week of August.

They currently have their largest acting company ever, with twentyeight actors. These actors are from local schools around the Bay Area (Canada College, Foothill, West Valley, SJSU, Notre Dame, Berkeley, Stanford…) It is with great pleasure, Bruce informed us, that this years company is 50% returning actors and 50% new faces. Although this is the tenth year in LG, Bruce has been at the helm of their performances on the road for eighteen years. “We traditionally pair a tragedy with a comedy.” shares Bruce. “Last year we presented The Importance of Being Earnest, Taming of the Shrew, and Treasure Island.” Bruce wrote their Treasure Island adaptation, in fact. “As a director you are a story teller.” This year Bruce looks forward to their production of the 1890 British farce comedy Charlie’s Aunt that will be directed by Rachel Bakker. They will also perform Twelfth Night. From Bruce’s storyline rendition, I concluded it will be a charming mistaken identity, gender conscious, and duel-filled, sure-to-please fun play, so don’t miss it. You can also look forward to their mastering of the dark drama, Macbeth. Bruce excitedly explains some of their production challenges this year, such as fourteen sword fights for their combat sequences. In the past while directing Hamlet, presenting a horror scene with a ghost early in the play, while it was still daylight was a challenge. He will be up against similar challenges this season. Well, he said, “Shakespeare did it so we can too!” It sounds like we are in for a real treat. See you there.

an you believe spring is just around the corner? Before we know it, it will be time to throw open the windows and pull out that spring wardrobe! This time of year always creates a little anxiety as we unveil our arms, legs and décolleté after a couple of seasons of hiding under heavier clothing. Our skin tends to become dull and dry and loses its sheen due to lack of moisture and the fact that we tend to ignore our skin as it is covered up. This window of time between the fading of winter and the promise of spring is perfect for preparing skin for the big reveal. At NuSilk, we offer many different treatment options to achieve that healthy glowing complexion, be it on your face, décolleté, back, arms or legs. One of our most popular treatments is SilkPeel Dermalinfusion. SilkPeel Dermalinfusion is a non-invasive skin rejuvenation procedure. It is the only technology to provide simultaneous exfoliation, evacuation and the delivery of a condition specific topical. SilkPeel Dermalinfusion offers advanced skin care for almost every skin type and condition. As SilkPeel’s diamond tip wand passes over the skin, it removes damaged surface skin cells, evenly abrading the top layer of the skin while stimulating cell renewal and smoothing uneven texture. SilkPeel Dermalinfusion has four condition specific topical solutions to meet your needs; Lumixyl Solution- hyperpigmentation, Clarifying Formula - acne, Hydrating Solution - dry skin, Vitamin C Solution - detoxification. The result is softer, more luminous skin. This treatment is non-invasive, painless and requires no downtime. This clinically proven skin resurfacing procedure can be used by itself, or in conjunction with customized chemical peels and laser treatments to address hyperpigmentation and uneven skin tone. Once skin is rejuvenated and has regained that natural glow it is imperative that you protect that new skin with the proper SPF protection. Sunblocks have markedly improved. New preparations such as micronized titanium dioxide are less conspicuous on the skin and offer substantial protection against both UVA and UVB. Sunscreens chemically absorb UV rays, sunblocks physically deflect them. Sunscreen has long blocked UVB effectively, but until recently provided less UVA protection. New ingredients such as octylcrylene and the benzophenones have improved sunscreen’s defenses against shorter UVA rays, and the revolutionary chemical avobenzone (Parsol 1789) works against all UVA wavelengths. Come in for your complimentary skin consultation and take that first step towards Spring. - Beth Stanco, C.L.E.
