JWSEAGON CELEBRATES 2 DECADES IN THE ‘CARING’ BUSINESS
21 years ago in history
Dear Reader, 21 years ago, just 2 years after the unveiling of the World Wide Web, way before Facebook, YouTube, Twitter, the mobile phone craze and Digital TV, insurance was a very personal matter and business was done face to face. Joseph William Seagon, founder and Chairman of the Group, joined the Norwich Union Life Insurance Society in Ipswich in 1951 and came to Kenya with that Company in 1958. He has stayed here, with a few short breaks, since that time. In 1983, Joe established JWS in the United Kingdom and 10 years later we opened our office in Kenya to help support the needs of our African Clients in Nairobi and beyond.
Welcome to Care Quarterly. We hope the issues we publish have been informative & entertaining. We value your feedback, do send us your comments through our contacts on the back.
Apart from Joe’s expertise in Life Insurance, he also gained a very in depth knowledge of all aspects of General Insurance business during his time as Managing Director of the Clarkson Group between 1970 and 1981 and now spends much of his time overseeing the expansion of our Company and giving advice and assistance to all members of our Staff. Our business has grown since and we care for over 8,500 customers — we support and administer business for Clients in Angola, DRC, Ghana, Kenya, Malawi, Nigeria, Rwanda, Somaliland, South Africa, South Sudan, Tanzania, Togo, Uganda and Zambia, as well as other countries including India, Singapore, Hungary, Switzerland, Australia and the UK.

— A DOCTOR’S PERSPECTIVE — By Dr. Donald Othoro
Not firing on all cylinders? Keeping up with modern living pressures.
World class healthcare without the the cost of worldwide cover.
he Explorer Health Insurance Plan from Bupa is a regional plan for East Africa for those living in and travelling around Africa, giving you access to treatment in all parts of the continent including South Africa and Kenya, as well as India, Pakistan and Sri Lanka. Overview
ousewife, student, CEO — there is no doubt that modern living has taken its toll on our minds and our bodies. As a Lifestyle Medicine practitioner I constantly encounter individuals symptomatic of living in a “pressure cooker” society where we are expected to perform and deliver consistently at very high levels. In dealing with these “modern day pressure cooker related illnesses” we need to identify and preserve the most valuable factor. You! You are your most valuable asset. We all experience situations when we’ve performed at much lower levels than our optimal potential. In some instances we’ve been able to bounce back with a little dusting off of our shoulders through mentorship and motivation. However there are situations that are more complex with a physical and mental health basis to our nonperformance. When our physical or mental health is not optimal, energy levels are lowered and we do not ‘fire on all cylinders’. Energy can be
sapped by physical illnesses such as anemia, low thyroid function and low Vitamin D levels. What many do not fully appreciate is that mental stress can be physically draining as well – stress initiates a sequence of events that act at the systemic physiological level and can be intensely energy sapping. When these issues become chronic they ultimately affect our personal and professional lives. How do we get back our ‘mojo’? It’s simple! Your annual health screen (some paid for by your medical insurer). However, obtaining your health screen results is just the beginning. Health assessments are more than just standard lab reports- they should tell your health story; where you have been, where you are and where you are headed. Armed with this information informed decisions can be made for a healthier physical and mental life. Author Dr. Donald Othoro MBChB (Cape Town) MRCGP (London) Director Valentis Clinic
