THE HOLLYWOOD KID

THE PATIENT PUZZLER

DANIEL STERN / LOS ANGELES, CA

CAROLE CHOUCAIR OUEIJAN / HACIENDA HEIGHTS, CA

Meeting Stern is like reuniting with an old friend. Most of us know him as we snuggled on the couch every winter to watch the holiday classic “Home Alone,” where bandits Marv (Stern) and Harry team up against eight-year-old Kevin McCallister. Others may recognize his voice as narrator from the TV show “Wonder Years”—which was partly filmed in Temple City. A natural born star, Stern’s transition from Hollywood actor to sculptor seems to be a natural progression, as both roles require what he says is the “basic human need to tell stories.” The City’s Public Arts Commission selected Stern to fabricate the project’s sculpture pieces, recognizing his innate talent for storytelling and impressive ability to capture lively movement. With titles like “Jump,” “Handstand,” and “Throwing Rocks,” you can just imagine the sometimes humorous spectrum of human experiences and feelings Stern’s pieces are able to convey in bronze. Oueijan is the ultimate puzzler, literally gluing hand-cut glass piece-by-piece into large, fantastical images of princesses, majestic landscapes and mystical creatures. Her journey started in Beirut, Lebanon, where she grew up both singing and sketching. Choosing to study fine arts over opera, she earned a Bachelor of Arts from the Institut Nationale des Beaux in Lebanon, where she channeled a true passion for oil painting. After recognizing her natural artistic ability, Oueijan’s father encouraged her to apprenticeship in the Byzantine indirect mosaic technique with world-renowned mosaic iconographers in Likavitos, Greece. Oueijan’s intricate, museum-quality mosaics are exhibited across the world, and have earned her the third commission to produce mosaic murals for Rosemead Boulevard. Although her public art component is still in the early stages of design, Oueijan hopes that it will “beautify the city, uplift the spirit of the community, and expose residents to the area’s rich history.” Learn more about her mosaics at www.fineartbycarole.com.
