Spotlight on: Graphic Novels & Manga The library has an extensive collection of graphic novels and manga located in the teen area. Graphic novels are books that have comic-style content and can be fiction or nonfiction. Some classic graphic novels in the library’s collection are Alan Moore’s Watchmen, Art Spiegelman’s Maus, and Marjane Satrapi’s Persepolis. We also have many of the Marvel classics, such as Ultimate Spider-Man, Vols. 1 – 10; Fantastic Four, Vols. 1 – 2; The Invincible Iron Man: War Machine; Daredevil: The Man Without Fear! and Hawkman: Endless Flight. Some DC classics in the collection include Batman: The Dark Knight Strikes Again; Batman: The Dark Knight Returns; and Green Lantern: Secret Origin. The library’s manga collection is equally comprehensive. Manga is the Japanese version of the graphic novel and is characterized by highly stylized art. It is read from the back to the front and has ratings listed on the back covers. Some material may not be appropriate for all teens. A few of the series in the library’s collection include Fruits Basket, Fullmetal Alchemist, The Queen’s Knight, Tsubasa, and D.N. Angel. As an aside, Free Comic Book Day is the first Saturday in May each year. On that day, participating comic book shops across North America and around the world give away comic books absolutely free to anyone who comes into their stores. Check with your local comic book shop for its participation and rules.
