Karen McMullen is a self-directed stock investor. Ms McMullen has been a film and video editor for over 20 years and recently began working as an adjunct professor. She has also invested in real estate and owns rental property in Manhattan and Brooklyn. Her interest in the stock market began shortly after graduating from Brown University, where she majored in International Relations and French Civilization. While neither she nor anyone in her family had any experience trading stocks, she recognized it as an area for potential capital growth and opened a small account with Merrill Lynch. She subsequently held accounts and mutual funds with Fidelity, Ameriprise and Charles Schwab, but only received mediocre returns. Three years ago, after attending a wealth building seminar geared towards creative people, Ms. McMullen began trading stocks for herself, and was thrilled to see that she could outperform her mutual funds with minimal risk. She continues to learn about the market and has added options trading as a component of her wealth building strategy. DOLLARS & SENSE
