BIRDING Fail to see a rare bird and you dipped or dipped out; if another lister spied a plume in your absence, he gripped you off. Respond abusively to the news of a sighting, and you shank the messenger. Suppression is when you don’t tell other twitchers what you saw.

Pot-hunters, tally-hunters, and tick-hunters call birdwatching twitching or birding, but a twitcher is one who travels long distances to bird. If a rare bird stays put long enough to show itself, it’s twitchable. The act itself is a twitch or a chase; the little creature gets ticked if the birder can check him off her list. A lifer is the first viewing of a species. Bins is short for binoculars, used for avian scoping. The lores is the space between the eyes and the upper part of the bill and the poll is the top of the head. Sum plum is a bird’s summer plumage. A familiar birding area is a patch. Zugunruhe is a seasonally occurring restlessness or the need to migrate. A bird that has escaped from captivity is plastic.

String, as a noun, is a dubious life list or record and, as a verb, it is to claim such a record.

Pishing is repeating “pish pish pish” to attract birds through mimicry of distress signals; respond and they’ve been pished out. A yabow is a non-birder who, oft with canine, frightens the dinosaurians from their perch.
