Belem Tower Originally built as a defense battlement in 1515, this tower is now a symbol of Portuguese exploration and discovery. Commissioned by King D. Manuel I, the tower showcases a fine example of fortified military architecture from the Middle Ages as it stands guard over the river Tagus. With its many terraces, it provides a breathtaking view of the river.
The Discoveries Monument The Discovery monument (Padrao dos Descobrimentos) was completed as a model for the Portuguese world exhibition and erected on the bank of the Tagus in its current form in 1960. The official reason for the opening of the monument was the celebration of the 500th anniversary of the death of Henry the Navigator, who gained great honor in the "Estavo Novo". The monument clearly shows above all else the artificial revival of the most important epoch of Portugal's national history under the Salazar dictatorship.
Praça do Comercio The Praça do Comércio is located in the city of Lisbon, Portugal. Situated near the Tagus river, the square is still commonly known as Terreiro do Paço, because it was the location of the Paços da Ribeira (Royal Ribeira Palace) until it was destroyed by the great 1755 Lisbon Earthquake. After the earthquake, the square was completely remodelled as part of the rebuilding of the Pombaline Downtown, ordered by Sebastião José de Carvalho e Melo, 1st Marquess of Pombal.
Alfalma Alfama is Lisbon's most emblematic quarter and one of the most rewarding for walkers and photographers thanks to its medieval alleys and outstanding views. Because its foundation is dense bedrock, it survived the 1755 earthquake, and a walk through this old-fashioned residential neighborhood is now a step back in time. It is a village within a city still made up of narrow streets, tiny squares, churches, and whitewashed houses with tile panels and wrought-iron balconies adorned with pots of flowers, drying laundry, and caged birds.
Vasco da Gama Bridge The Vasco da Gama Bridge is a cable-stayed bridge flanked by viaducts and rangeviews that spans the Tagus River in Parque das Nações in Lisbon, capital of Portugal. It is the longest bridge in Europe (including viaducts), with a total length of 17.2 km. Construction began on February 1995; the bridge was opened to traffic on 29 March 1998, just in time for Expo 98, the World's Fair that celebrated the 500th anniversary of the discovery by Vasco da Gama of the sea route from Europe to India.
São Gabriel and São Rafael Towers The São Gabriel and São Rafael housing towers with 25 upper stores were built in Lisbon in "Parque das Nações", the former Expo 98 site, and are integrated into the Vasco da Gama Commercial Complex. The names of the towers are those of two of the ships used by Vasco da Gama in the discoveries of the 15th century.
Oceanarium The Lisbon Oceanarium’s conceptual design, architecture, and exhibit design was led by Peter Chermayeff of Peter Chermayeff LLC while at Cambridge Seven Associates. It is said to resemble an Aircraft carrier, and is built into the pier on an internal sea. Chermayeff is also the designer of the Osaka Oceanarium, one of the world's largest aquariums, and many other aquariums around the world.

Marina Oeiras Oeiras municipality is located in the Metropolitan Area of Lisbon, bordering with the Capital to the east, Cascais to the west, Sintra and Amadora at north. In the south, there is the estuary of the River Tagus and the Atlantic Ocean. The coastline spreads throughout 9 km, where the beaches Torre, Santo Amaro de Oeiras and Paço de Arcos are reference points. Alongside the coast, the fortified line is detached which remind us the important strategic role of this district in the commercial exchanges, that became intense with the Portuguese Discoveries odyssey.
Bugio Lighthouse The Fort of São Lourenço do Bugio, also known as Forte de São Lourenço da Cabeça Seca or simply Bugio Tower is located in the midst of the waters of the Tagus river estuary. It is a circular tower of stone, white, topped by a red lantern and balcony, inside a fort also circular. The place where it stands was a bank of sand formed by the silting of the river mouth, the fruit of the dynamics of the confluence of its waters with the Atlantic Ocean, to the rhythm of the tides.
São Julião da Barra Located at the exact point where the river Tagus meets the Atlantic Ocean, at Oeiras, this is the largest and most important coastal fortress in Portugal. It was built during the reign of king João III in the latter half of the sixteenth century and is now one of the official residences of the Portuguese State.
Carcavelos Carcavelos Beach is a wide beach, going from the Carcavelos entrance up to the São Julião da Barra fortress, integrating two small dimensions sandy areas: the Moinho Beach (next to the fortress) and another one, in front of the famous “Bar dos Gémeos”. Despite the fact that this is the most extensive sandy area of all Estoril Coast, it is quite common to get crowded in summer time, even during weekdays.
Cascais This attractive seaside, formerly quaint fishing village that became (along with neighboring Estoril) a popular resort favored by European nobility and kings in the early 20th century. Today it is a colorful cosmopolitan town with elegant pedestrian streets, luxuriant villas, fashionable shops, restaurants and bars. with its lovely beaches and youthful air. It is a favorite among weekending Lisboetas and travelers. While its resort status is undisputed it remains an active fishing port, with an appealing old town full of narrow, winding lanes.
Estoril The proximity of Lisbon allied to all the Natural Beauty and glamour that are part of the Estoril Coast, make this a sea of possibilities and a destiny of a thousand sensations. Fabulous gardens and Casino. From pure leisure to business, golf, sun, sea and water sports, the Estoril Coast simply has it all and offers a new definition of the concepts of tourism. And then return to Lisbon
Boca do Inferno Boca do Inferno (Portuguese for Hell's Mouth) is a chasm located in the seaside cliffs close to the Portuguese city of Cascais, in the District of Lisbon. The seawater has access to the deep bottom of the chasm and vigorously strikes its rocky walls, making it a popular tourist attraction.
Guincho Beach Praia do Guincho is a popular Atlantic beach located on Portugal's Estoril coast, 5 km from the town of Cascais, and is located in the municipality of Cascais, more precisely in the parishes of Cascais and Alcabideche, in the District of Lisbon. This beach was famously featured in the pre-titles sequence of the James Bond film On Her Majesty's Secret Service, wherein James Bond rescues Contessa Teresa de Vicenzo from a suicide attempt and foils off two attackers in the surf; the beach still looks as it did in 1969. More recently, the beach served as location for the shooting of the film This Side of Resurrection, directed by Joaquim Sapinho.
Cabo da Roca Cabo da Roca was known to the Romans as Promontorium Magnum and during the Age of Sail as the Rock of Lisbon. The 16th century Portuguese poet Luís de Camões described Cabo da Roca as the place "where the land ends and the sea begins“.
Azenhas do mar Azenhas do Mar (sea-watermill), a village with a beautiful precipice, and the most prized beachfront in Sintra. With breathtaking view, delightful houses falling down the precipices; the memorable cliff is a ubiquitous place both in summer and winter, as a result of the loftiness of the view it furnishes. There, you can venerate the Atlantic Ocean in all its impressiveness, and with a little luck, see, in the distance, sail among vessels. On the right, you see one of the midway purposes of the village, comprising of little white houses, trimmed in blue, as it would be if cut into the rocks heading down to the ocean
Sintra Sintra, a world heritage city and a municipality in the Lisbon area; It is indeed an extraordinary place with a surreal mixture of history and fantasy, protected by UNESCO as a World Heritage Site. It’s incredible vistas, and notable museum collections, fairytale palaces, makes it the destination by excellence. It houses spectacular Royal Palaces, used by generations of Portuguese royalty prior to the 1910 revolution. Sintra is still and was once described by Robert Southey as "the most blessed place in the whole of the inhabitable world". Lord Byron called Sintra "glorious Eden"
Pena Palace The palace stands on the top of a hill above the town of Sintra, and on a clear day it can be easily seen from Lisbon and much of its metropolitan area. It is a national monument and constitutes one of the major expressions of 19th century Romanticism in the world. The palace is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of the Seven Wonders of Portugal. It is also used for state occasions by the President of the Portuguese Republic and other government officials.
