Winter sports are coming to the city. The number of in-city events is rising. Snow sports, up close and personal, are all the rage. Schneestern has also progressed in this field and is now responsible for some of the biggest events. Page 2
NEW SNOWPARK IN LECH The foundation of the new snowpark in Lech was laid in the 2009/10 winter. Schneestern produced a detailed analysis of the existing park and carefully examined all of the important factors. After reviewing the results of this analysis in summer 2010, the management decided in favor of a new park concept to be developed together with Schneestern. The new concept targets families and beginners.
In interview: Christoph Pfefferkorn (General Manager, Lech Skilifts) with Dirk Scheumann (CEO Schneestern)
DS:: Christoph, you have a lot of experience with snowparks, which has led to a long tradition at Lech. How did the decision come about to rethink the park and decide on a new direction? CP: After ten years we’re allowed to start thinking about a new direction. Our goals and expectations weren’t being fulfilled anymore. I think the market has changed, and because of this we looked for new solutions and providers in order to head in a new direction. DS: The complete overhaul of the park concept is based on the expansion of family and beginner areas. Do you think that this is the right direction for other ski areas as well? CP: Yes, it’s definitely the right direction. After all, most of the guests are beginners at this ski area. Even for experienced and competent skiers, huge jumps are usually intimidating. That’s why it’s good that now there’s a place in the park where everybody can feel good and progress. If I had more room here at Lech, I would gladly build more diverse lines for the various target groups. We’re planning to develop the advanced line this winter. DS: I’m of the opinion that by offering snowparks, ski resorts must assume responsibility for their guests at a level never seen before. Do you think that professional concepts like the one in Lech can reduce injuries and develop guests’ trust in freestyle terrain? CP: I think that injuries can never be completely avoided. Usually ski and snowboard accidents are caused by guests who overestimate their abilities. Naturally we do everything we can to make the park as safe as possible. Obstacles must be safe, the jumps should fit the terrain, etc. A design by a professional naturally helps here. But in my opinion, the daily maintenance is also very important. At the moment we have up to six shapers from our own crew in the park. In addition we have a Park Bully exclusively for park terrain. According to the park manager
SCHNEESTERN PARKS & MORE
Sepp Moser we had no serious injuries this year. Last year alone we had eight helicopter rescues. We’re very proud of this improvement. DS: Are you satisfied with the first season? Were we able to reach the stated goals together? CP: I’m very satisfied. We’ve been getting fantastic feedback. In particular the ski schools congratulate us on the successful concept. But many normal guests also praise the park. I’m proud of our team, and I’m excited to continue to develop our concept, together with Schneestern, for the coming season. DS: To conclude I’d like to thank you for the interesting input and your trust in our work. I look forward to our continuing collaboration.
NEW 4500m2 FACTORY In the future even more flexible and faster in production and shipping. Eleven years after our establishment in 1999, we’re continually expanding our production. FIRST IN SNOWPARK SAFETY At Schneestern we’re well aware of the risks in snowparks, so we try to minimize these risks through constant innovation in snowpark equipment and in the parks themselves. We are the only company in the snowpark industry to have our products certified by a monitoring organization like TÜV (Technical Supervisory Association). Furthermore, we work with one principle goal in mind: More safety in snowparks. To reach this goal we collaborate with various governmental and research institutions from all across Europe, for example the Accident Prevention Bureau in Switzerland, which also strive to increase safety and reduce the liability of ski areas in the case of an accident. A decade of experience in snowpark development and close collaboration with experienced engineers has made it possible for us to develop a unique software that helps us plan our snowparks and event installations with precision. Our goal was to be able to test all obstacles in a park on their risk potential, and to calculate the inherent physical strain on the snowpark user. Based on these results we can now optimize the risk potential and strain on the user. Today we can clearly define the parameters of jumps, or establish an exact starting point based on varying friction values and snow temperatures. These evaluations help us optimize freestyle terrain and increase users’ safety.
9QUEENS / INNOVATION ON SNOW
Schneestern Rails and Boxes are the only ones on the market approved and certified by TÜV.
We men will do just about anything for the female sex. A snow castle being maybe the exception, until now. This year a milestone was laid for women’s freeskiing. For the first time, the world’s best female freeskiers came together at the NINE QUEENS event in Serfaus (AT) to create freeski
DISTRIBUTION IN CZECH REPUBLIC In recent years we’ve found qualified companies and partners to represent our products and services in countries including Italy, Switzerland and France. We’re now glad to have found a partner in the Czech Republic. Dan Prawlin, owner of NoHo Prague s.r.o., says: “Technology in the field of snowmaking and passenger transport in ski areas. That is the domain of NoHo Prague s.r.o.
ing history. Together with the event organizers we conceived a setup that we hoped would be equally groundbreaking. During the planning stages we continually doubted if this kind of architecture was even realizable with snow. Project leader Dirk Scheumann points out, “Innovation begins with extra-
ordinary ideas, and only becomes reality through courage and passion.” In this spirit the team from Schneestern took on the challenge, and proved once again that they’re among the best in their field.
Product Developments 2011/2012 For years the name Schneestern has meant a guarantee of the highest safety, quality and innovation. This year we’ve expanded our product collection again in the latest Product Guide 06. Enhancements to modular system
New park signage
With the new tools everything is possible.
With our modular system, a more creative park design is guaranteed. Schneestern’s tried-andtrue modular system has been expanded for all curved elements like S- and C-boxes. Rails and boxes with different dimensions can now also be combined thanks to new connector pieces.
Schneestern supports “SMART STYLE”, the North American signage program for snowparks and other freestyle terrain based on four simple ground rules. It’s already well-established in America thanks to the support of the official federations and organizations. But it’s also taking hold in the Scandinavian countries. We think Smart Style is a very logical concept that can standardize the look of terrain park signage worldwide. Terrain park guidelines should be free of competing ideas as a matter of basic principle. For this reason we offer our sign graphics as free downloads on www.schneestern.com an.
MORE FLEXIBLE, LIGHTER; BETTER The new shape tools from Schneestern feature enhancements developed in collaboration with the world’s best park shapers. Lighter materials, non-slip grips and robust, replaceable steel blades are just a few of the details that set our new tools apart from the rest.
www.nohosnow.com In Middle and Eastern Europe we conceive snowmaking systems that are simultaneously effective and economical. Additionally we help ski areas to employ the most up-to-date practices and the newest technology, thereby minimizing costs for the entire area operation.
One of our customers’ most common questions is how to build a safe snowpark that is commercially successful, and how much to budget for it. In order to give a competent response it’s important to have experience available from diverse fields. With Schneestern we’ve found a partner that fully meets these requirements.

Schneestern prepares everything professionally- from planning up to the actual construction of the snowpark. For ski area operators it’s very important to know that the snowpark design is safe for visitors and that the specific target groups are catered to. Schneestern is the only company in their field to develop their own snowpark planning software. All of Schneestern’s products are TÜV-certified and have a quality mark.

STUBAI ZOO - ONE OF EUROPE‘S BEST PARKS In recent years the snowpark on the Stubai Glacier has become one of Europe’s best parks and is now well-known far beyond the borders of Tyrol. Schneestern has been responsible for the development of the park since 2007. From year to year the park’s location and design has been improved thanks to close collaboration with the ski area operators. Since 2009 Schneestern and sister company 5stars GmbH have been responsible for marketing, communications and park events. That’s reason enough for us to introduce you to this project.
We spoke with operations manager Walter Müller. Questions: Dirk Scheumann
01. Hi Walter, what exactly is your position and how long have you worked for the glacier lift operations? I’m operations manager and have worked for the Stubai Glacier for 27 years. 02. What are your areas of responsibility? I’m responsible for piste safety, grooming, rescues and avalanche control in the avalanche council. The snowpark also falls into my area of responsibility as far as safety and grooming is concerned. 03. Schneestern has planned and maintained the park on the glacier for over five years. How did the decision come about to work together with Schneestern? Some years ago we had a small park on the glacier that we maintained ourselves. Unfortunately it wasn’t very successful. We got to know Schneestern through an event on the glacier in 2004. I was impressed by your well-developed equipment and professional methods. 04. Are you satisfied with Schneestern’s work? What aspects of snowpark construction and maintenance are especially important for you? I’m very satisfied with your work and very impressed by your dedication. The park is great and the shaper team is really very good. Your people know what they’re doing and act professionally. Our staff has a very good relationship with the shapers and working together functions easily, which is very important for me. Also the communications and marketing that you’ve helped take over in the last few years has been an important element in the park’s success.
05. How do you think the visitor numbers in the park have changed? The change has been very positive. I can remember that it was only a handful a few years ago. Nowadays it’s a few hundred per day. Of course it’s always dependent on the weather up here on the glacier. But ever since the park became professionally maintained and marketed, the visitor numbers have really soared. 06. How is it with injuries in the park? Do you think that Schneestern’s safety precautions have helped to reduce injuries? I think that we have very few injuries in proportion to the size of our park. I can only think of two cases in the past five years where the injuries were really serious. I think our injuries can be measured not by percentage but by fractions of percents. That’s a great result for a park of our size and visitor numbers. Naturally this is associated with the professional planning and maintenance. I’m glad that your professional team builds the park for us and assumes responsibility for what they build. 07 Are you satisfied with the quality of the snowpark equipment? Was our TÜV certification a

good park costs money, but nowadays that needs to be seen in context. The guest wants a complete package that includes pistes, crosscountry trails, freeride terrain, ice climbing tower etc. Naturally a snowpark comes with the territory. 09. Last words? I have to say that at first we had a lot of critics among our own people. Now there aren’t any more critical voices to be heard. Schneestern’s professional and cooperative way of working has made it possible for everyone at the glacier to be proud of the snowpark.
Essential for a snowpark’s success In 2008 the agency 5stars GmbH was contracted to research and create a comprehensive concept for the developing snowpark. A clear mission statement and park identity for external as well as internal communications was defined and successfully implemented for more than two seasons. In addition to the sensitive fields of public relations and sponsor acquisition, a central role of snowpark marketing is online communication to quickly and costeffectively reach the young target market. The spectrum is rounded out with the development of small as well as large event productions. All events and promotions are geared towards fascination, participation and impact.
reason for choosing Schneestern? I have to say that at first I didn’t know much about this kind of equipment. I think it’s good that your rails and boxes have a TÜV certificate and that was certainly a reason for the decision to order from you. In the first years there were only a few small problems. The snow anchors stuck out too much from the sides. My snowcat drivers were always destroying the feet of the elements. But I have to say that you reacted very quickly to improve the design and solve the problem. I value this open relationship, and I’m glad when us old hands can still suggest improvements. There’s still some maintenance necessary after every season, but I think that’s normal. The most important thing is a proper, covered storage area. 08 What would you recommend to your colleagues at other ski areas who want to implement a snowpark? By all means turn to a professional company. We don’t have a clue about snowparks. Trying to build a park by yourself doesn’t bring the desired results. In the future it’ll also be more and more about legal security. That’s why it’s good to have a professional partner. Naturally a
In cooperation with a few partners, CEOs Bernhard Burger and Dirk Scheumann have supported the growth of the freeski and snowboard scene for several years. In addition to the rookie tour “Wir Schanzen” which has fostered new talent in the German-speaking Alps for seven years, the German Freeskiing Championships in the disciplines of Slopestyle and Halfpipe were also organized.
For over 10 years Schneestern has stood for technical know-how in the fields of rail and feature construction, snowpark planning and maintenance, as well as technical event planning and execution. This pool of resources in combination with an extensive network of specialists, as well as 5stars’ highly regarded scene affinity, makes the agency a sought-after partner for events and corporate communications.

EXPERTISE – NOT JUST ON THE MOUNTAIN
Spectators love wintersports events in the city, and more of them come every year. Whether world-class big air events or small contests on a stairset, the possibilities are endless. In comparison to mountain locations, however, planning for a city event demands much more detail and complexity. Most in-city setups are built with scaffolding and then covered with snow. Events in the city re-
quire an extensive, experience-based technical knowledge in addition to the classic know-how regarding shaping and park design. Schneestern CEO Max Kaiser says, “Construction sites like these require real all-round talents. Skilled manual labor of all kinds, the ability to improvise while keeping an eye on the whole, an extensive machine outfit, the statics and dynamics of the snow; all of these factors have
to be juggled in order to create a successful snow event in an untypical environment.” In this year as well, the Schneestern team has put its expertise to the test.

WE ARE SCHNEESTERN PRODUCTION SUPERVISION- MARTIN HÄNSEL Schneestern’s strength is based on the dedication of our employees. We’re bound together as a family by the passion for action sports. Every individual in our team is an expert in his field, and only all together are we Schneestern. In the next issues of SCHNEESTERN NEWS we’d like to introduce you to our team. They are people who’ve found a home with us through their love of sports, nature, and snow, as well as their enthusiasm for individual projects. Martin Hänsel / Production manager Martin completed an internship at Schneestern while working on his mechanical engineering degree. He quickly made himself known for his creativity and talent for improvisation. After less than six weeks we started talking about a permanent position. This accomplished metal design engineer has been responsible for production management at Schneestern since 2008.
His management style is friendly and consistent. His extensive expertise and his talented workmanship make him a good role model, and not just for our apprentices. We’re glad that this family man from Thüringen has found a new home with his wife here in Allgäu, and we thank him for his dedication. (Management: Dirk Scheumann / Max Kaiser)
