History The Golden Retriever was originally bred in Scotland in the mid-19th century. They were first bred near Glen Affric, a village in Scotland. At that time, Golden Retrievers were meant to retrieve. They are a part of the Water Spaniel family. Golden Retrievers live near water or out on the open land. They are used to both environments because late in the days hunting grounds were pocketed with marshy ponds and rivers. Golden Retrievers are adaptable to both water and land.
