from the Mayor

Welcome to the 2013 edition of the Crows Nest, North Sydney and St Leonards Shopping Guide. This compact booklet is a handy guide to the shops, restaurants and services in your community. The shopping villages and businesses listed here play an important part in our community and are a focal point of our neighbourhoods. As a Council, we are always thinking of ways to develop the commercial fusion in North Sydney and make it a place that retailers and businesses can thrive and residents and visitors can find the services they want. Council already partners with local retailers and businesses to improve the amenity of our shopping villages through our successful Streetscape Program. There are six active Shopping Area Streetscape Committees in North Sydney. There is nothing more convenient for a resident than to be able to walk to a store to buy groceries like milk and bread, rather than having to take a car. These local businesses allow us to live more sustainably and Council in return, helps them become more sustainable in areas such as waste, energy and water use, purchasing and transport. Many of you will recognise some of the small businesses in this guide, whether it’s your local grocer or the place where you get your haircut. Small businesses contribute to our local economy, making North Sydney the vibrant and prosperous place that it is. I urge everyone to support our local businesses.

Jilly Gibson - Mayor 7

FOOD & WINE GREAT PLACE FOR FRIENDS TO MEET ILLNESS TEACHES CHOCOLATIER ABOUT THE IMPORTANCE OF USING ORGANIC INGREDIENTS [8]

Four Friends chocolate cafe owner Katze Ting. Story is about her cafe called Four Friends opening recently in Crows Nest, her health struggle and about her store. Source: News Corp Australia [8] BY INTERN JESSICA LIM

The importance of being happy and healthy is the message cafe owner and self-taught chocolatier Katze Ting wants to share through her boutique chocolate cafe Four Friends in Crows Nest. Four Friends opened last December and was inspired by Ms Ting’s ability to overcome the life-threatening chronic connective tissue disease scleroderma. “We had a cafe in Artarmon for five years, and around this time I was very sick. I realised that happiness is the most important thing in life. “We wanted to do something that was different from other cafes, something that wasn’t traditional. And everyone feels happy after eating sweets like chocolate and candy.” From the name of her cafe, to the organic and natural products used in the chocolates, coffee, tea and food sold at Four Friends, her conviction in healthiness and happiness is clear. “Four Friends is a traditional Buddhist story about four animals that cooperate, love and respect each other,” Ms Ting said. “It’s also a message that we’re happy to help anyone who comes to our cafe, and any suppliers or wholesalers.” Ms Ting’s enthusiasm for organically grown ingredients and natural products like Fair Trade Cacao from Belgium also derived from her struggle with scleroderma. “When I was sick, I learnt that you have to choose Scan QR code to good ingredients that make you feel happy and Like FOUR FRIENDS healthy,” she said. on Facebook 46

TARONGA ZOO [2] GETTING THERE Taronga Zoo is located in Mosman on the North Shore, roughly halfway between Cir cular Quay and Manly. The best way to get there is by ferry from Circular Quay.

PH: 9969 2777 www.taronga.org.au Bradley Head Rd adult/child $44/22 9am-5pm, last admission 4: 30

A day trip to Taronga offers so much more than the zoo itself: running the gauntlet of didgeridoo players and living s tatues at Circular Q.uay; the ferry ride past the Opera House and ou t into the harbour; the cable car from the wharf to the top gate; the ever-presen t views o f the city skyline as you make your way down through 75 hectares of bushy harbour hillside. And to cap it all off, the enclosures are excellent, too.

DON’T MISS

Australian Natives As you’d expect, Taronga Zoo is chock-full of kangaroos, koalas and similarly hirsute Australian creatures. The zoo’s 4000 critters have milliondollar harbour views but seem blissfully unaware of the privilege. The animals are well looked after, with more natural open enclosures than cages. Highlights include the nocturnal platypus habitat and the Great Southern Oceans section.

TALKS & ENCOUNTERS

Throughout the day there are keeper-led feedings, educational talks and demonstrations. One of the highlights is the bird show at midday and 3pm, where remarkably tame raptors and parrots swoop over an open-air amphitheatre facing the harbour. Equally popular is the seal show, featur ing Australian and Californian sea lions and New Zealand fur seals.

TOURS

Tours include Nura Diya (ph:9978 4782; 90-minute tour adult/child $99/69; @9.45am Mon. Wed & Fri), where indigenous guides introduce you to native animals and share Dreamtime stories about them, while giving an insight into traditional Aboriginal life. The Wild Australia Experience (adult/child $124/78; @1Oam&2pm) is a small group tour with a keeper that allows entry into the koala enclosure, the opportunity to hand-feed kangaroos and wallabies, and behind-the-scenes access to the Nightlife house.

ROAR & SNORE SLEEPOVER

The overnight Roar & Snore (ph:9978 4791; adult/ child $275/190) experience includes a night-time safari, a buffet dinner, breakfast and tents under the stars. 48
