Community Members, Time to think SUMMER and FUN! Summer is a time for every member of your family to stay involved, explore new activities and improve skills! In the 2017 Community Education Brochure you will find offerings from children to adults. Again this summer we have a lot of new offerings for everyone! FREE Summer Breakfast/Lunch Feeding Program- Thank you Cheryl Pick and the Food Service Staff for your hard work on the Summer Feeding Program. Foley was approved and will be offering FREE breakfast and lunch for individuals ages 1 to 18 again this summer. Adults can eat at cost of $4. Breakfast will be served from 7:00-9:00am and lunch from 11:00am-12:30pm in the FIS Cafeteria 4-H Summer Day Camps- I am excited to team up with Benton County 4-H again this summer. They brought back the Summer Days Camps. At the day camps students will be served FREE breakfast and lunch with our Summer Lunch Feeding Program. Please see page 3 for more information. Swimming Lessons- The City of Foley will be providing their annual group swim lessons this summer. You will be able to see the full schedule of classes on the city web page at www.ci.foley.mn.us. See page 22 in our Community Partners section. Summer Musical: Music n’ Spice- Joan Brauen and Cindy Stay are offering a wonderful summer musical opportunity for students entering grades 4-6! Get ready to discover four different exciting topics this summer through experiments, projects, crafts and some guaranteed messy fun while making new friends. Classes are for all youth in grades K-5. 4-H membership is not required. You must pre-register at least three days prior to the event. Breakfast and lunch will be served by the school. You may bring a bag lunch if you would prefer your own meal. Please drop-off and pickup at the Foley Elementary School. Class Fee: $8 each class or $16 for family! Create an arcade-style, side-scrolling platformer. You will learn to create a web-based platformer using Construct 2, a visual coding platform that teaches the basics and structure of programming. Do you like building things and figuring out how things work? You will love this class. Join us as we explore, investigate, & solve problems while we learn about the building blocks of engineering-simple machines. Enjoy hands-on activities using LEGO® Gears and special Technic engineering components that incorporate math, science & creativity. Work through building models that demonstrate mechanical and physical engineering. Use what you learned to solve challenges. Learning projects may include mini mechanical concept models. N E W Pokemon Movie Making, Gr 1-5 Computer Explorers

New Class! Work on a stop-motion, animated POKEMON movie. Pick your favorite characters to star in your mini-movie; the possibilities are endless! Action figures, props, and backdrops will be available for filming in class. Handle all the technical details including using a digital movie camera, filming scenes, stop-motion animation, digital editing and adding finishing special effects and transitions to the movie. Java Minecraft Modding: Super-Tool, Gr 3-8 Computer Explorers New Class! Create a custom super-tool. Learn and use elements of Java coding to create a Minecraft Mod. You will create a set of tools and weapons, as well as combine the functions of the tools into one super-tool. You should be comfortable with keyboarding, and of course playing Minecraft! N E W Intro to Coding with Super Heroes, Gr 1-3

Love video games? Create your OWN video game! Kids as young as 5 can create their own platform video games in this cool class. Choose your storyline with popular super heroes as you start adding challenges and levels of difficulty, then share by email or post on the web to challenge family and friends. Now young students can practice math, logic, and programming and put their video game talents to work. Game will be in an animated flash format, viewable in most internet browsers. St. Cloud Technical College

This class is provided by St. Cloud Technical College. Using a Smart Machines Engineering Kit, you will be introduced to robotics and basic programming in a captivating and challenging way. There are pre-designed, programmable, remote-controlled robots for you to choose from or you can create your very own robot. You will take the robot home at the end of the day! Class Fee: $55

Legos with Timm Smith Lego WeDo Mini-Bots, Gr 1-3 Work at your own pace, alone or in teams, to learn simple engineering and science concepts through the use of LEGO robotic kits and computer software. Take this class multiple times and still have new experiences. Both girls and boys will enjoy this introductory class. Lego Robotics Engineering, Gr 4-5 Use LEGO Mindstorm and EV3 robotic systems to compete in real world challenges like an obstacle course or sumo wrestling. We will build the base model and then you will modify and program the robots to compete in the challenges. We will program “smarter” robots to move, act and think and use advanced programming that allows the robots to react to sensory input such as touch and light sensors. Foley Bike Safety Rodeo, Ages 10 & Under The Foley Police Department, in partnership with Foley Community Education and other local organizations, is hosting the third annual Bike Safety Rodeo! While mom and dad visit the city-wide garage sales, the kids can learn how to tune up their bikes, be safe while riding, properly fit a helmet and win cool prizes. Classroom Driver Education, Age 15+ Mike Anson

Babysitter Training, Ages 11+ Emergency Outfitters

This course follows the American Academy of PediatricsBabysitter Lessons And Safety Training (BLAST). You will learn current practices for safety and injury prevention, first aid basics, feeding and caring for infants, how to handle behavior problems and how to manage their babysitting business. You will receive a reference book, recipe and game handouts, babysitting bag and first aid kit. Class Fee: $54 Mon-Tue • July 10-11 • 8:00am-12:00pm • FIS Room 305

F.A.S.T. Kids, Ages 7-10 Emergency Outfitters

First Aid & Safety Trained Kids is a 6-hour course. Lessons cover basic first aid, water safety, vehicle safety, home emergencies, injury prevention, personal safety and healthy living. This course helps prepare children for staying at home alone. Students will receive a book and construct a home first aid kit as part of the class. Please bring snacks and water. This course, sponsored by Community Education and A-Z Drivers Instruction, provides the 30 hours of classroom drivers training required to obtain a driving permit. Students must be 15 in order to take the permit test. We encourage taking this class as close when you will take the permit test as possible. Attendance at all 30 hours of the class is required. Adults wishing to get a driving permit are welcome to take this class also. Behind the Wheel instruction can be contracted individually with A-Z Drivers Instruction. The $20 Community Education fee is due with registration. The $85 fee is due to A-Z Drivers Instruction the first day of class. Red Cross WSI (Water Safety Instructor) Course Curt Hoffman

Water Safety Instructor (WSI) is a Red Cross certification for swimming and diving instructors. The purpose of the course is to train instructor candidates to teach courses and presentations in the American Red Cross Swimming and Water Safety program by developing their understanding of how to use course materials, how to conduct training sessions and how to evaluate participants’ progress. A Midsummer Night’s Dream, Ages 7+ Prairie Fire Theater

Take the stage this week along with two professional actors in Prairie Fire Children’s Theater’s original musical production of the “A Midsummer Night’s Dream.” Auditions will last for two hours. All auditioners are required to be in attendance from 12-2pm. The cast will be announced at the end of auditions. Rehearsals are 12-4:15pm, Tuesday-Friday. Performances will be Friday at 7pm and Saturday at 10am. Tickets for performances will be available for $4 for adults, $2 for senior citizens and students, and free for preschoolers. D.T.A. Performance Basketball Camp: Shooting At this 3-day camp, we will be focusing more on shooting. We will work on form shooting, spot up shooting, shooting off of screens, and shooting off the dribble. When working on shooting off the dribble we will show you how to create space. This camp we will focus on ball handling and finishing around the basket. We will focus on different types of layups, euro steps, spins, floaters, and being able to finish with contact around the basket. With ball handling, we will work on single moves like between the legs, cross over, behind the back and in and out. We will also work on combination moves like in and out cross over, between the leg crossover, etc. Our main focus will be learning how to change speed in and out of the dribble. Girls Youth Fast-pitch League, Gr 5-9 This league introduces young girls to softball and building a strong foundation. At this age and level, players will focus on the fundamentals of the game, to build relationships, and to have fun. Players will work on improving their skills of hitting, throwing, and catching. Team defense and fast-pitch strategy will be introduced. Double headers will take place on game nights. Parents will be responsible for providing transportation to practices and games.

Mobile Book Exchange Throughout the summer students can come to the ‘Mobile Book Exchange’ to get a new book, they are asked to also bring a book they have read to leave at the exchange.
