Greetings All, I hope everyone has had a wonderful 2017 and is ready to jump into a fabulous 2018! In these pages you will find opportunities for every member of the family to make the most of this fresh new year! Here in Community Education we are constantly trying to enhance ourselves and our offerings to meet the needs of our community. If you have any class suggestions please feel free to give us a call! Barn Wood Painting Party!, Age 10-13 Me and My Girls and Our Guy

Join MMG Workshop (Me and My Girls and our Guy) for a morning of fun and creativity! Don’t have a crafty bone in your body? No problem! You’ll start with a pile of unfinished wood (literally) and walk out the door with a finished, stained and painted pallet-style wood sign. We’ll break the process of making and painting your own wood pallet style sign down so you leave with a piece of home decor you’re proud to hang up or give as a gift! Grandmasters of Chess, Gr K-5 Youth Enrichment League

New and returning students invited. Join this “sport of the mind”. YEL Chess has proven excellence in dozens of schools. YEL has 50+ chess lessons for all levels, hundreds of puzzles for all levels and our teachers are among the best in Minnesota. The lessons progress from rudimentary concepts through higher-level theories. Our activity books are formatted to be accessible to beginners, yet challenge intermediate and advanced students to apply a deeper understanding of chess concepts. Wheels and Racers! STEM Enrichment using LEGO® bricks for the 21st century learner. Poultry 101: Raising Chickens Have you always dreamed of having your own backyard chickens but don’t know where to start? This is the class for you. We will cover: preparing for chicks, chick selection, proper care of baby chicks and adult chickens, illness and diseases. You will even hear how you can show chickens in 4-H. As a bonus, we will send you home with a basic starter kit. Don’t forget your camera as we will have example brooders and supplies available for you to see. Exploring Horses: 4-H Style Do you love horses? Do you want to learn more about them? In this session you will make a stick horse, learn some “Horse Terms”, how to care for them, names of breeds and where they originate, coat colors and safety tips for being around horses. You will discover the opportunities in the 4-H horse program, including showing your horse at county fair, the classes you can enter and what they are. You will even participate in drill team with your stick horse as well as learning to throw a rope at a fake calf or steer and tie a fake goat. New From 4H

Get a taste of what 4-H is about and the numerous opportunities that are waiting for you. This event is open to 4-H and NON 4-H kids in grades 3-7. There will be a sampling of projects areas to choose from. You can choose three topics, to find out more and even leave with a project you can enter in the Benton County Fair if you’d like. The project areas include: Wildlife Education, Exploring Horticulture, Fabulous Foods, Natural Photography, Growing with Goats, Cake Decorating and Fun with Fashion. Babysitter Training, Age 11+

Classroom Driver Education, Age 15+

Emergency Outfitters

This course follows the American Academy of PediatricsBabysitter Lessons & Safety Trainings (BLAST). Students will learn current practices for safety and injury prevention, first aid basics, feeding and caring for infants, how to handle behavior problems and how to manage their babysitting business. Students will receive a reference book, recipe and game handouts, babysitting bag and first aid kit. Please bring snacks. Class Fee: $59 Mon-Thu • Apr 16-19 • 3:00-5:00pm • FIS Media Center

F.A.S.T. Kids, Age 7-10 Emergency Outfitters

First Aid and Safety Trained Kids is a 6-hour course especially for 7-10 year olds. Lessons cover basic first aid, water safety, vehicle safety, home emergencies, injury prevention, personal safety and healthy living. This course helps prepare children for staying at home alone. Students will receive a book and construct a home first aid kit as part of the class. Class Fee: $45 Mon-Tue • Apr 30-May 1 • 3:00-6:00pm • FES Media Center

Red Cross WSI (Water Safety Instructor) Course Curt Hoffman

Water Safety Instructor (WSI) is a Red Cross certification for swimming and diving instructors. The purpose of the course is to train instructor candidates to teach courses and presentations in the American Red Cross Swimming & Water Safety program by developing their understanding of how to use course materials, how to conduct training sessions, and how to evaluate participants’ progress. Class Fee: $245 Fri-Sun • Jan 26-28 • FES Room 111/Pool Fri, 5-9pm - Sat, 8am-6pm - Sun, 8am-6pm

ZAPS ACT Test Prep, Gr 10-12 This intensive five hour test preparation workshop is designed to coach high school juniors to do their best on the ACT test. The participant can expect to receive: 1. First hand familiarity with the form and content of the ACT test, including practice on each type of test item, 2. A battery of tactics and strategies for dealing with each section of the test, 3. Techniques to reduce ‘test anxiety, 4. A comprehensive Study Guide filled with tips, strategies and detailed answer explanations and 5. Four workout booklets containing 24 tests that provide opportunities for extensive review and practice. Class Fee: $89 Fri • Mar 9 • 9:00am-3:00pm • FHS Room 327

This course, sponsored by Community Education and A-Z Drivers Instruction, provides 30 hours of classroom drivers training. The course meets the requirements to obtain a driving permit. Students must be 15 in order to take the permit test. We encourage taking this class as close when a student will take the permit test as possible. Attendance at all 30 hours of the class is required. Adults wishing to get a driving permit are welcome to take this class also. Behind the Wheel instruction can be contracted on an individual basis with A-Z Drivers Instruction. The $20 Community Education fee is due with registration. The $85 fee is due to A-Z Drivers Instruction the first day of class. Class Fee: $20 Mon-Fri • Feb 5-16 • 3:30-6:30pm • FHS Room 327

Firearms Safety Training, Age 12+ Foley Community Education with the assistance of several DNR trained, volunteer firearm safety instructors will provide firearm safety training this spring. The class will be a combination of classroom and field experience covering the safe operation and functioning of firearms as required by the MN Dept. Of Natural Resources. PARENT NOTES: Students taking this course can be 11 years old but must turn 12 by Dec. 31, 2018. If an 11 year old takes the class and passes the test the state DNR office will hold their card until they turn 12. Do not allow your child to bring a gun to class or the field test. All firearms will be provided. Attendance at all class sessions and good behavior is expected of all participants in order to pass the course. There is reading homework for this class that you will need to assist your child with. Students must pass a State DNR written test in order to take the field test on April 21. Both tests must be passed in order to complete the course and receive certification. The field test will only be given on Saturday, April 21. Testing times and maps to the range will be distributed in class. A parent or legal guardian MUST attend the first session on April 2nd to complete registration paperwork for their minor child. Please use door I-21 to enter and exit school. The DNR now requires a $7.50 fee paid online after course completion to obtain certificate. Dawn Opheim Lil’ Kickers Tae Kwon Do, Age 4-6 This program is designed as a precursor to regular Tae Kwon Do classes for young children. We help build a foundation for Tae Kwon Do training, while improving motor skills, memory, discipline, confidence and more. The material is presented in fun and exciting formats. GRASP Math/Reading

Father Daughter Dance, K-6

Grasp is a 9 week correspondence program that helps students maintain reading and math skills over the summer. It should take your child approximately one hour each week during the summer to complete each weekly lesson. It is recommended that you order the materials for the grade your child just completed. Once lessons are completed, you just put them in the mail in the envelopes provided. They are corrected and then returned to you. Instruction sheets found in each packet provide all the necessary information. Please note this program is intended to help maintain skills your child mastered and will not be effective for teaching skills your child is missing. Class Fee: $33 for one subject or $54 for both subjects. More information will be sent home in your child’s backpack.

Join us for the 3rd Annual Father Daughter Dance “A Princess and Her Prince”. Attention girls K-6th grade! Grab your dancing shoes and don’t miss out on a fun-filled evening! Invite your father, uncle, grandpa, etc. and enjoy a special night! We’ll have an evening full of music and dancing for you! A picture booth, complementary snacks and refreshments will be provided. Pre-registration is required for all activities.

The registration deadline is one week prior to the start of the activity. All classes and activities will be filled on a first come, first served basis. Registrations later than one week before the start of the activity will be accepted if space is available. You will be notified if an activity is full or canceled. Registration is not complete until payment is received. You do not need to be a resident of the Foley School District to take part in our Community Education programs (except for School Readiness and ECFE).
