usually depicted as an old man with a patriarchal head, close to that of Zeus. He has luxuriant hair and a long beard. On his head he wears a Modius, the basket-like symbol of fertility. His body is covered with a rich cloak. It should be also mentioned, that in the only complete representation of Sarapis in Alexandria, in a silver tetradrachm of Ptolemy IV, Sarapis wears the Atef crown of Sarapis, an obvious promotion of his Egyptian roots (Fig. 30).
