From The Editor

COME TOGETHER NO MATTER HOW FLEETING IT

may seem, fall is my season of choice in Colorado (perhaps not the most original notion, but hey, it’s true). Pumpkinspice everything doesn’t provide much of a thrill for me, but nothing beats that warm-and-fuzzy feeling when the temperatures dip into the 60s, the aspens turn their brilliant golden hue, and cozy sweaters and boots become my daily uniform. Typically, my favorite part of this time of year is the sense of rest and reconnection that comes with it: Shorter days mean more quiet, cozy evenings spent at home, and the start of the holiday season provides plenty of opportunities to gather and One reason to celebrate: Local cheese shop So Damn Gouda celebrate with loved ones. offers charcuterie boards that make hosting a breeze and can But, as 2020 has proven be delivered to your door. Or if you want to assemble your own, check out owner Mike Keuler’s tips on page 32. Sharing is optional. too many times, this is no ordinary year. You may be tired of the whole “quiet evening at home” thing by now, and your holiday festivities are bound to look different from those of years past. Even so, there are still plenty of ways (and reasons!) to celebrate. As local event planner and design maven Kendra Kimball told us: “Now, more than ever, is a time to really reflect on the gratitude we have for one another and our time together.” She, along with our other expert sources in this issue’s “Entertain Like A Pro” guide (page 29), shows us how to host in style— even if it’s for an abbreviated guest list—and facilitate more creativity and connection at home. Because who doesn’t need more of that warm-andfuzzy feeling right now? Happy fall! Michelle Johnson

WHAT’S YOUR GO -TO RECIPE FOR ENTERTAINING?

Jimena Peck

Sarah Lawrence

Alison Gwinn WRITER

PHOTOGRAPHER

While photographing the new Rosy Rings Studio (“Making Scents,” page 24), Jimena Peck was inspired by the boutique’s candlemaking workshops hosted in the back of the store. “We need more spaces like these for interaction and connection in a world that seems to be moving in a different direction,” she says. For Peck, the best way to connect is around a table full of traditional dishes inspired by her Argentinian heritage: empanadas and Fernet Branca with Coke—or, as she calls it, “the king of drinks in Argentina.”

As one-third of the team at Lawrence House photography studio (the other members are her husband, Hunter, and their Insta-famous pooch, Aspen), Sarah Lawrence has created content for major brands including Room & Board and Fjällräven. This issue peeks inside the cabin that the couple renovated in just 30 days and that Sarah photographed (“OneMonth Cabin Makeover,” page 38). Those lucky enough to be invited to the cabin would be greeted with margaritas and tacos, Sarah says—the Lawrences’ go-to menu “no matter who is coming over.”

“My guests can always expect a big salad with fresh garden veggies and a killer berry pie when they stay at my house,” says Alison Gwinn, who has written for a bevy of local and national publications. For this issue, Gwinn spoke with Denver artist Tya Alisa Anthony about her recent collection of collage portraits created with found, historical imagery (“Stories Untold,” page 19). “Talking with Tya was a reminder of how rich this country’s history is, and how, if you have a nose for poignant stories and a lot of patience, you can find almost anything,” Gwinn says.

Utah-based architecture and interiors photographer Meagan Larsen is drawn to homes with unexpected design elements and big personalities, so a texture-rich Greenwood Village home designed by Ashley Campbell (“Prints Charming,” page 52) didn’t disappoint. “I love that Ashley takes big design risks that pay off every time,” she says. Larsen likes to play it a bit safer when it comes to entertaining—her fail-proof recipe is a simple bruschetta. “It’s classic, so easy to put together, and I find myself making it even when the only person I have to entertain is me,” she says.

I envision what happened in that photographic moment, that sixtieth of a second.” Anthony has been captivated by the narrative power of photography since her militarybrat childhood, when her father, a drill sergeant, gave her a Minolta camera to document their peripatetic lifestyle. In 2012, she enrolled at Denver’s Rocky Mountain College of Art and Design to hone her photography, videography, and fine art skills, and began applying her artistic talents to a greater purpose. “I asked myself, ‘What do I care about?’ ” she recalls, “and I thought, ‘the voiceless—those without an audience to change systems of oppression; genera-

For some artists, a new work begins with a flick of a paintbrush or a rough pencil sketch. But for Denver artist Tya Alisa Anthony’s Organic Tarot series—a 78-piece collection of striking collage portraits that the artist calls “a reflection of a tarot-card deck from a 20th-century Black perspective”—the creative process started with hours of sifting through online photo archives in the public domain to find people with whom she felt a connection. “It’s like a rabbit hole,” Anthony says. “One image will lead to an entire story.” In this case, the stories were of formerly enslaved people and their descendants

Founder Shannon Cumberland, who began by dabbling in her kitchen decades ago, parlayed her sensory works of art—she’s known mostly for her hand-poured candles infused with dried blooms, seeds, leaves, berries, and essential oils—into a thriving wholesale enterprise run out of a 30,000-square-foot workshop in the Clayton neighborhood. “A store seemed like the next logical step,” says Rosy Rings’ co-owner and retail 24

operations director Allie Liebgott, who helms the shop. “It took over a year and a half to find the perfect location, fix it up, and open. It has given the company a public persona. We are getting to know our customers on a more personal level, and they are getting to know us, too.” The shop is more than a storefront for the Rosy Rings brand. Customers will find a thoughtful assortment of home decor and giftable items—whimsical stationery, fair-trade handwoven baskets, jewelry made from recycled metals—from artisans and vendors both local and far-flung. Got a foodie on your list? The Half Baked Harvest cookbooks from Colorado author and food blogger Tieghan Gerard fly off the shelves, Liebgott says. Want to pamper someone? for sweet ideas like pen-pal kits kids can use to write to their grandparents. The best part, she says, is that there’s a bit of everything in the shop. “If you want to spend $25 or $200 on a gift for someone, you can.” (Psst: No judging if that someone is you.) rosyrings.com

FURNITURE

TAILOR MADE With their direct-to-designer platform, Saltwolf, Boulder-based interiors experts Lindy and Jordan Williams have mastered the new art of delivering heirloom-quality furnishings on a modern timeline. • by CHRISTINE DEORIO When Jordan Williams left a career in consumer marketing to manage finance, operations, and marketing at Westward Foundry— the Boulder interior design firm helmed by his wife, Lindy—he was shocked by the furniture industry’s inefficient and antiquated modi operandi. He watched Lindy struggle to obtain dimensions, pricing, and samples from showrooms; shook his head as he completed vendor

account applications by hand; and heard clients complain as they waited three or four months to receive their orders. “In the consumer space, there are all sorts of companies spending inordinate amounts of energy solving these kinds of problems,” he says, but “no one was doing it in this industry.” Enter Saltwolf, the direct-to-designer furniture company the couple launched in May to tackle those challenges

and high-performance velvets in vibrant jewel tones—“because that everything-neutral look is reaching its peak,” Lindy says, “and with Saltwolf, I wanted to do something about what’s next.” saltwolf.com

WHAT’S IN A NAME?

Saltwolf’s unconventional name harks back to the Williams’ hometowns: Lindy grew up on the ocean in Virginia Beach (hence “salt”), while Jordan is a selfproclaimed “bearded mountain guy from the Pacific Northwest” (hence “wolf”).

quality pieces—think: kiln-dried hardwood frames with eightway, hand-tied, spring suspension systems—in four weeks or less. Saltwolf’s sofas, sectionals, ottomans, and benches solve another persistent industry problem: “that simplicity is often the hardest thing to find,” Lindy says. “My goal was to create really simple, pretty silhouettes,” with materials to match. Designers can choose from three hardwoods, plus three fabric types (or opt to supply their own): soft Belgian linens, buttery leathers from an Italian tannery,

Host With The Most

We get it: Hosting celebrations in your home feels a little (erm, a lot) different this year. Maybe you slashed your annual Friendsgiving list and plan to share a tiny turkey with your pandemic pod, or instead of welcoming Aunt Millie and her six kids for the holidays, you’re prepping your home for a quiet visit from Grandma. Even so, celebrating is important, and there’s still ample opportunity for doing it in style. We’ve rounded up tips from local pros to help you spruce up a guest room, set a beautiful table (no matter its size), create a delicious charcuterie board, and even choose a hostess gift, if you’re lucky enough to be invited out. Here’s to entertaining wisely and well this season! • by HILARY MASELL OSWALD

THE TABLE

Set The Scene

THE GUIDE

ENTERTAIN LIKE A PRO

Event planner and all-around design guru Kendra Kimball shares her secrets for setting a dinner table that welcomes guests with warmth. The pro: Kendra Kimball, Kcidy Design Bronze plates from West Elm, orange pillar candles, and black chairs from local design house Atla add to the warmth of this autumnal table.

Gathering friends and family together might feel more special this year than ever before, and nothing is as welcoming as a beautifully set table. “Now, more than ever, is a time to really reflect on the gratitude we have for one another and for our time together,” says Kendra Kimball, a Denver– and Los Angeles–based stylist and event planner who created this tablescape for six guests. “I designed this table by asking, ‘What can I do to connect people on a deeper level and make them feel loved and valued?’” Her answers can help you set a welcoming scene for your next (intimate) dinner party:

3. MAKE IT YOUR OWN. Kimball likes to quote design scion Kelly Wearstler: “Take something and give it a new spirit.” That might mean bending the rules of etiquette by placing all of the utensils on the left side of each place setting or tying napkins in a casual knot instead of a more formal fold. “Once, I used wrapping paper as a table runner,” Kimball says. “I used what I had, which is a great approach. It feels unexpected and friendly.” 4. INCORPORATE ALL FIVE SENSES. Place a candle (Capri Blue’s Volcano is Kimball’s favorite) by the front door to delight your guests when they walk in. Put on a playlist that matches your theme’s mood (Kimball’s go-to artists include Nick Leng, Kate Bollinger, and the Bahamas). Choose a handmade element or two for added visual and tactile appeal (Kimball found these hand-painted water glasses at Food52, “and they’re absolutely lovely,” she says.). 5. GARNISH, GARNISH, GARNISH. To give guests an opportunity to customize their meals, Kimball provides toppings such as pumpkin seeds, vegan parmesan, or edible flowers on the table. “Garnish provides an extra touch that says, ‘This was curated for you.’” Kimball says. kcidy.com

1. FIND INSPIRATION. It can be anything: a menu, pretty glasses inherited from your grandmother, or the reason you’re celebrating. Here, Kimball imagined a nontraditional Thanksgiving, which led her to a warm color palette and decor that riffs on typical Turkey Day tropes: Instead of squash and pumpkins on the table, she used pears, figs, and kiwi in small groupings with florals (cut from a field across the street from her home), candles, and small bowls of gourmet chocolates and nuts.

SCENES FROM QUARANTINE

2. AIM FOR CONNECTION. Kimball worked with friend and graphic-design whiz Jessie Zweibel to create “activation cards”—simple stationery that asks questions such as, “Where do you find beauty?” and “What makes you feel deeply alive?” Each person reads her question and then guests take turns answering. “These are important questions to ask, ideas to reflect on right now,” Kimball says.

With plenty of extra time at home this summer, Kimball gave herself a challenge: Create artful tablescapes for small gatherings using items she had in her own home. You can find the gorgeous results— and more practical details on her approach to setting a pretty scene—at her website (kcidy.com) under “Quaran’scenes.”

For nearly five years, chef Mike Keuler’s brilliantly named So Damn Gouda has been whipping up and delivering delectable cheese trays to lucky eaters all across the Denver area. Armed with a culinary background, Keuler makes the dairy-based indulgence his focus, then fills in with complementary flavors from cured meats, nuts, dried fruits, and more. Here, he shares his tips for getting the mix just right for your own cheese board this holiday season. The pro: Mike Keuler, S o D amn G ouda SATISFY THE CROWD. “For your tray, you want sweet, savory, crunchy, sour—all of the qualities you get out of a great dish,” Keuler says. Here, he anchored the savory side of the board with Jeff’s Select gouda from Minnesota and Prairie Breeze sharp cheddar from Iowa. Cornichons, buttery Castelvetrano olives, black-pepper salami by Elevation, and Italian speck—a cold-smoked ham with intense flavor—round out the offerings. The tray’s sweeter side includes bright-orange mimolette from France and double-cream brie from Haystack Mountain in Colorado. Marcona almonds, blackberries, So Damn Gouda’s signature red-wine reduction jam, and dried figs and apricots complement these two cheeses. SIZE IT RIGHT. Anchor your board with no more than four cheeses, and plan on serving about 3 ounces of cheese and 1.5 ounces of cured meats per person. And if multiple hands reaching for the same platter makes you nervous in these strange times, go for personalsize portions on smaller boards. ADD SOME CRUNCH. So Damn Gouda makes their own crostini, and you can too: Thinly slice a day-old baguette, drizzle with a little olive oil, sprinkle with salt, and bake at a low temperature (325 degrees) until the slices become crisp. You want mild crackers, says Keuler, who also recommends Raincoast Crisps for their slightly sweet flavors that pair especially well with creamy cheeses.

GET SOME HELP. “Sometimes, people think cheese is like wine: If you don’t know what you’re talking about, you can’t access high-quality products,” Keuler says. But that’s not true, he insists. Call the Sunnyside shop for help choosing cheeses that’ll please all of your guests, from picky children to the most sophisticated palates. And if you just want to order a tray without fussing about it, the company’s website has ready-to-go options—with wine!—available for delivery within 24 hours. Which leaves only one question: To brie or not to brie? sodamngouda.com

RELISH THE CHEESE BALL. “I grew up in Minnesota, and you can’t have a gathering in the Midwest without a cheese ball,” Keuler says. While the versions from his childhood were made with port-wine cheese, So Damn Gouda’s signature recipe uses finely shredded aged gouda and the shop’s red-wine jam for updated deliciousness. Pimiento cheddar and fresh-herb-andgoat-cheese options are also available.

THE GUEST ROOM

THE GUIDE

In Good Company

Interior designer Lauren Winter shows you how to turn a spare room into a space your visitors won’t want to leave. (You’ve been warned.) The pro: Lauren Win ter, I nside Stories

Sometimes, it’s tempting to furnish a guest room with a mishmash of unwanted elements from bygone design eras. But this beautiful bedroom— designed by Lauren Winter of Inside Stories by Duet Design Group—makes a compelling case for creating an intentional space that shows your visitors you’re actually glad to host them. By pulling inspiration from Winter’s approach, you, too, can build a space that will delight your guests.

PICK A STANDOUT ELEMENT. Here, Winter started with the wallcovering—Casamance’s Azuli print in Amethyste. “We were drawn to its abstract feel that brings in a punch of color,” she says. The bold pattern is ideal for a guest room because, she adds, “your guests are typically only staying for a short time, so they won’t have time to get sick of it!” BUILD A PALETTE. Nothing makes a room feel more pulled together than a cohesive color scheme. This palette

takes cues from the wallcovering, but you can use any starting point: a gorgeous rug, vibrant curtains, or even an eye-catching throw pillow. PAINT THE CEILING. A color-rich ceiling is an affordable way to make a room feel polished and extra cozy. Winter chose a dark hue—Benjamin Moore’s Anchor Gray—“because the other furnishings in the space were light in tone,” she says. If your room has dark walls or heavy wood elements (or if it’s located in the base-

ment), you could opt for a lighter hue or even a shimmery wallcovering to brighten the space. PROVIDE LOTS OF LIGHT. To make you feel good inside them, rooms need multiple sources of light. Here, sconces from Anthropologie augment a ceiling light and the glow from the windows. Thoughtful touches—such as a dimmer on an overhead light’s switch or a night-light—allow guests to darken a room as they prefer before drifting off to sleep. insidestories.com

BEFORE

Interior designer Lauren Winter transformed “a beige box,” as she describes it, into this vibrant, approachable bedroom. The Casamance wallpaper is a playful foil for the tailored headboard; a pair of two-toned nightstands from Joybird complements the wood elements in the room and adds a fun, midcentury vibe.

Put your Wi-Fi network name and password in a small frame on a dresser or nightstand. Liven up the room with a small bouquet of fresh flowers or even a faux plant for low-light basement spaces. A few beloved books on the nightstand are easy decor—and will delight visitors who love a good bedtime story.

Renovation ONE-MONTH CABIN MAKEOVER

A coat of jet-black paint was all it took to transform this Coal Creek Canyon cabin’s log exterior from tired brown to Scandi sleek. Inside, the refresh required considerably more effort, but not so much that husbandand-wife homeowners Sarah and Hunter Lawrence—owners of commercial photography studio the Lawrence House and the Instagram-famous golden retriever @aspenthemountainpup—and their general contractor, Joshua Brink, couldn’t knock it out in just under 30 days, and for just over $30,000. How’d they pull it off? Sarah shares their time- and money-saving moves that never skimped on style. • by CHRISTINE DEORIO

In the living room, homeowner Sarah Lawrence blended patterns and textures “to bring in more warmth, so it doesn’t feel stark and cold even though it is all neutral,” she says. A smooth, concrete-topped coffee table and rug-like pillows from Morocco add to the tactile mix.

RENOVATION, CONTINUED

5280 Home: Your vision for this cabin was all things light, serene, and inviting. Your reality was just about every 1960s design trope imaginable, from orange walls to brown wall-to-wall carpeting. What changes did you need to make to bridge that gap? Sarah Lawrence: The updates

were mostly cosmetic—new flooring, paint, lighting, doors and trim, appliances, countertops, and plumbing fixtures. We wanted to vault the living room ceilings, but when we learned it would cost $20,000, we decided to add interest by putting MDF shiplap on them instead—a budget-friendly alternative to real wood. Is sticking to cosmetic fixes the secret to a speedy remodel?

That, and our contractor suggested things we could do ourselves to save time and money. Once the baseboards were in, he showed us how to caulk everything. He showed us how to wire lighting. We installed handles on the new doors, and we painted all the interior walls. Which brings us to that fresh vibe you envisioned.

I’m just all into neutrals! For the kitchen, dining, and living room walls, we went with a creamy white paint. I wanted some texture in the bedrooms, which led me to a lime wash finish from Portola. And for the bathroom, we used Portola’s Roman Clay [plaster finish] in a taupe color. When you touch it, it has this soft, velvety feel. Speaking of soft, where did you find that fluffy rug that’s beckoning from your living room?

It’s an 8-by-10-foot rug, which you don’t usually find in

Above, from top: A coat of black paint gave the cabin's exterior a handsome new look—without any structural updates. To open up the small kitchen while creating display space for a collection of ceramics they’ve gathered from around the world, the Lawrences asked contractor Joshua Brink to replace the existing upper cabinets with custom open shelving. Sarah got her wish for sleek Café appliances and beautiful aged-brass faucets and cabinet pulls from Devol. The cabinets are painted Portola’s pale gray Half Dome hue. Top right: Hunter and Aspen snuggle up in front of the Cisco Home linen-slipcovered sofa that Sarah scored for half price. Right: Simplicity reigns in the dining area, where the Lawrences envisioned “something light and neutral,” Sarah says. A Denver Modern table with a clean, Scandinavian design fulfills that aim, as does a set of woven-leather-backed chairs from San Francisco home goods shop Saffron & Poe. The pendant light—the Naomi Hand-Forged Hanging Shade—is from Circa Lighting.

sheepskin, but we spotted it at a Denver rug shop, and it was a great price and just perfect for a Colorado mountain cabin. Were other furnishings found in a similar fashion?

I really value unique pieces and not having all of it look like I just went to Target and Ikea and West Elm. Pieces from those places are sprinkled in for sure, but there’s also fun pottery we’ve collected from overseas; antiques from Round Top, Texas; pieces from [local furniture company] Denver Modern; and our white linen slipcovered sofa from Cisco Home. I had my eye on that sofa for a couple of years, but it was over my price point— until I found it on sale for 50-percent off! Did such savvy spending allow for any splurges?

I’ve had my eye on [U.K. brand] Devol’s brass faucets for forever, so I said, “I don’t know how much shipping is going to be, but we have to have them over our sinks.” We also splurged on Devol kitchen cabinet pulls, Café appliances, and Circa Lighting fixtures—things that were really important to us. Any tips for sticking to those design priorities?

It’s so easy to get overwhelmed with all the options; creating mood boards of how we wanted the space to feel really helped us stay focused on our vision. Find a contractor who sees your vision and can advocate for the improvements you’re wanting to make at the budget you set. And finally, take a step back and breathe.

On the front deck, a white Room & Board sofa hints at the fresh, clean-lined design that awaits inside the house. “I wanted it to feel lighter, like you’re in the mountains of Italy or Spain, where there aren’t antlers or plaid,” Sarah says.

Above: After learning that a custom vanity would break the budget, Sarah scoured Denver antiques shops in search of an existing furniture piece that could be retrofitted with plumbing fixtures. After a fourday hunt, she found this one—an old buffet with built-in storage—that “was literally the exact length that the bathroom could handle,” she says. With the money she saved, she was able to splurge on aged-brass faucets by English manufacturer Devol and a pair of sconces from Circa Lighting. Top right: “We both value having little vignettes all around the house; it makes us happy to look at them,” Sarah says of subtle yet special design moments like the entryway table—a lucky find from Denver’s Miller Lane Mercantile—which displays a collection of treasured books, pottery, and photographs. The walls here and throughout the main living areas are painted Benjamin Moore’s White Dove hue.

What to know when selecting

New Windows Tip no. 1: Consider your environment. First and foremost, always remember that all locations have different environmental needs. Things to consider are moisture levels, altitude, and temperatures (desert vs. coastal vs. harsh winters). One window does not fit all. Tip no. 2: Think outside the (existing) box. One of the most common oversights is people replacing their windows for the same window. Yes, sometimes windows need to be swapped out for functionality or energy efficiency, but take a minute and consider what else you might be able to do. Is there something unique you can do instead that might work better for your design/how you use your house? Tip no. 3: Consider how the light would move through your house during the day. If you’re a night owl or someone who struggles with sleep, you probably won’t want to place a window in your bedroom on the eastern wall. This is also a big deal in a child’s room. Unless you want your littles jumping out of bed right at sunrise, carefully consider that window placement. Tip no. 4: Keep your home’s style in mind. When you’re in the middle of a renovation, style paralysis can set in quickly once you’re faced with large investment decisions. But don’t feel intimidated. Start by identifying your home’s architectural style and taking a bit of a deep dive on Pinterest or Google to see other houses in that same aesthetic. What kind of windows do they all seem to share? Gridded? Picture? Double hung? Bay? Also take note of the color of the window frame and what you’re drawn to or what feels natural to the architecture.

Lifetime Windows & Siding Lifetime is Denver’s most trusted window and siding company.

Tip no. 5: Look for appearance and performance. Good window design isn’t just about appearance. You want windows that function smoothly and easily—and will continue to do so for years to come. And you want windows that are energy efficient. Tip no. 6: Plan ahead (so you don’t fall behind). Windows can have a long lead

time, so do not put off ordering them— especially if you want to keep a renovation project on track. You’ll want your new windows in before you close up your walls. It makes everything easier, and helps ensure your window frames turn out clean, correct and perfect. Tip no. 7: Think of windows as an “investment” rather than “expensive.” New windows are not inexpensive. They are an investment. But replacing old windows can reduce high energy bills in both cold and hot climates, reduce mold in wetter climates, and generally have a positive impact on the way your home functions. Windows are also a structural component of your house and an important piece to ensuring it stays sound for years to come. Tip no. 8: Invest in energy efficient windows. All Marvin windows are ENERGY STAR® certified and recommendations are given for four climate zones in the United States—the mostly heating zone (Northern); two combination heating and cooling zones (North/Central and South/ Central); and a mostly cooling zone (Southern). Every qualified window will list the zones it is certified for. Tip no. 9: Make sure your new windows come with a warranty. A lot of home elements look great when they’re new. But when it comes to your windows, you want something that will continue to look (and function) like new for years to come. Lifetime Windows & Siding offers a double transferable lifetime warranty that covers parts and labor. Tip no. 10: Research the product’s reputation. Homebuilding products are only as good as their reputation. Talk to friends and acquaintances that have installed new windows over the past few years. But make sure you include individuals who have been living with their “new” windows for a while. Do they still love the way they look, feel, and operate?

Your Outdoor Space Tip no. 1: Get inspired. If you don’t already have ideas on how to transform your outdoor space, start dreaming! Drive around neighborhoods, go on a Parade of Homes tour, and even browse Pinterest to start those creative juices flowing. Tip no. 2: Compartmentalize. Creating a new outdoor space can be a big undertaking. Divide your project into smaller bites to ensure proper attention is given to each aspect of your yard. If you have a large space, consider dividing the area into different “rooms” for different types of activities: eating, relaxing, entertaining. Tip no. 3: Think water-wise. Colorado is known for its dry, hot summers, so plan accordingly. Choose products that embrace the xeriscape lifestyle, like pavers, decorative 50 • Hire a design Pro

rock, gravel, and flagstone. Choose plants that are native to Colorado to ensure they’ll do well in the climate and require less water. Tip no. 4: Be clear on a budget. All that inspiration leads to big dreams, so be clear on a budget for your project. All products for your yard can be grouped in good-betterbest categories, which means you have the flexibility on where you most want to spend your money. Tip no. 5: Know when to hire a pro. If you’re unsure if your DIY-skills are up to the task, consider choosing a local contractor for part, or all of your project. Contractors can be specialized or run the gamut on the types of jobs they do. Make sure to get referrals, multiple bids, and lay out a clear scope of work and contract.

The secret to cozying up an expansive house? For this Cape Cod–style home in Greenwood Village, the answer lies in patterns, textures, and fireplaces galore.

Finding a picture-perfect home can be like discovering a needle in the proverbial haystack—unless you’re a seasoned architect and can revamp a less-thanideal house however you wish. Such was the case for J.R. Lamicq, a principal at Littleton’s Woodley Architectural Group, who spotted this 2007 shingle-style house in Greenwood Village and knew he could nip and tuck it into a dream home to share with his two daughters and their menagerie of pets. “I was actually thinking about building my own custom home… but this neighborhood is an unbelievably cool little enclave with lots of old trees, and the house felt timeless,” says Lamicq, who has designed homes from Texas to the Bahamas, plus plenty of residences

Below and right: “The great room is super textural; the more layers of textures you have, the more inviting a space feels,” Campbell says. “We mixed plaids and tribal patterns to mesh traditional and contemporary [styles].” Rough-hewn wood pieces, including a side table from CFC Furniture, contrast beautifully with a more tailored sofa by Vanguard Furniture.

An oversized Palecek pendant light mimics the breakfast nook’s round Noir dining table, which is ringed by chairs from McGuire Furniture. Mixing various finishes—a wool rug from West Elm and a carved wooden bench from Dovetail Furniture—gives the airy corner a cozy feel.

A pair of blackened-steel-clad islands—with suede granite waterfall countertops—takes center stage in the showstopping kitchen. Six oil-rubbed-bronze pendants with brass interiors (Haleigh by Rejuvenation) draw eyes upward. The ceiling’s white-oak planks and cold-rolledsteel beam were designed to mimic the home’s original timber rafters, but with a contemporary twist.

The fireplace-plus-bath combo is about as spa-like as it gets. Adding to the warmth: the saturated blue hue (Benjamin Moore’s Newburyport Blue) of the cabinets and an encaustic tile backsplash from Zia Tile. “To let them pop, we left everything else in the room muted and neutral,” Campbell says.

in his home state of Colorado. “The house had great bones, but I knew I’d have to modernize it a bit”—which he did with help from Denver interior designer Ashley Campbell. At the starting line: the cramped main bathroom. “In a lot of the designs that I do, the baths are getting bigger and becoming more spa-like,” Lamicq says. He followed suit by removing non-load-bearing walls and adding 25 square feet to make way for resort-grade amenities including a linear fireplace, a glass-walled steam shower with multiple heads, a soaking tub set under a geometric chandelier, and a coffee maker. “I’m a firm believer that good design and architecture can transform people’s lives,” says Lamicq, who now kick-starts each day with a cup of coffee and the morning news—all without leaving the bedroom suite. “It’s changed the way I get ready in the morning, and I come into work more relaxed and energized.” Adjacent to the main bathroom is the former study, which Lamicq converted into an expansive closet complete with a custom-woodwork centerpiece island, a trio of capiz-shell pendant lights, and another fireplace. “The fireplace was already in there, and I wasn’t going to rip it out,” he says. “Sometimes those obstacles become unexpected elements that take a space from ordinary to extraordinary.”

These eye-catching moments continue throughout the rest of the house, thanks to Campbell’s selection of eclectic furnishings and accessories. “J.R. wanted to stay with that transitional look, and he likes color, so we did vibrant pops of blue, orange, and pinks,” Campbell says. Tribal-inspired patterns mingle with neutral upholstery, a move that supplies textural warmth around every corner. That warm, welcoming feeling was key for Lamicq, who hosts fantasy-football and holiday parties aplenty. “One thing I loved about the house was its large dining room that would seat 10 comfortably,” he says. “It’s so nice to not have to put kids at a different table.” The dining chairs are rated for outdoor use—thanks to Sunbrella fabric, which can withstand everything from cat scratches to spilled pinot noir—and are exceedingly comfortable. The dining space’s showstopper: black-and-white floral wallpaper by Ellie Cashman Design, which is balanced by the comparatively sedate furniture and a glimmering light fixture that casts the entire length of the table in a romantic glow. “When Ashley selected it, I looked at her and said, ‘Never in a million years would I have chosen that wallpaper for myself, but that’s why I hired you. I need you to push me,’ ” Lamicq says. Sometimes, a little push—and the design eye of a skilled

The dining table—which homeowners Kellye and Cody O’Kelly made using a live-edge pecan wood slab they sourced near Kellye’s hometown— and the bull skull are both nods to the couple’s Texas roots. Easy-to-clean plastic Eames Shell chairs and a chandelier from West Elm add sleek, modern elements.

The O’Kellys in front of their home in Eagle

YOU MIGHT IMAGINE THAT WHEN CODY AND KELLYE

O’Kelly—a construction manager and interior designer, respectively—were plotting out their own home, they were dreaming up over-the-top ideas. On the contrary, practicality and restraint guided the 2,800-square-foot project on an idyllic lot, situated between a golf course and a pocket park in Eagle, that Kellye discovered while on a bike ride. As outdoorsy recreationists who care about the environment, the couple prioritized sustainable materials and energy efficiency. As industry professionals (they now own their own design-build firm, OCG) who had seen clients’ budgets and project timelines balloon, they knew that sticking to predetermined limits was imperative. And as the parents of two young children, Cody and Kellye designed with comfort and durability in mind. The result is a warm, approachable, highly functional house where the O’Kelly family and guests alike always feel at home.

PORTRAIT: SHANE MACOMBER

Above: A dropped ceiling in the vestibule helps to define it as a distinct, transitional space, while windows in the front door provide views of the pocket park across the street. Right: Kellye loves cooking and hosting—but she doesn’t love guests crowding the kitchen when she’s trying to whip up a meal. The solution? A bar area (to the left of the island) where visitors can grab drinks and appetizers. Windows to the front porch allow her to keep an eye on—and distribute snacks to—the kids while they play outside. “The kids think it’s a drive-up food window,” she says. Alder cabinetry, by Avon’s Elegant Cabinets, got an ebony stain that allows the wood grain to show through, an effect amplified by the absence of hardware (Kellye chose finger pulls instead).

5280 Home: How much did the location influence your home’s design? Cody O’Kelly: We really believe in design-

ing to the site and not trying to force something that’s not natural to that place, whether that’s in the selection of materials, like the cedar siding we used, or the size or shape of the home. Kellye O’Kelly: Inside, olive greens and rust colors reflect the nature where we live. I want to feel like we live in the mountains, to have that mountain-modern aesthetic—but not so harsh and modern that you’re uncomfortable. The interiors definitely feel inviting. KO: The greatest compliment when we’re

entertaining friends is when they say, “We feel so comfortable and cozy here, and we’re not paranoid about our kids running around.” We knew our kids might want to come in with their scooters or whatever; we couldn’t overload the space with furniture and knickknacks that can get broken. What were your biggest priorities at the outset? CO: This is kinda nerdy, but there’s been a

big push over the last few years to throw energy at everything: Put air-conditioning in, heat the floors. Instead, we designed a more passive house. We did not do air-conditioning, but we did a really nice insulation package and a whole-house fan, which pulls cold air in at night and lets the house slowly warm up during the day. KO: We’re both from Texas, so we grew up in air-conditioning and can’t stand it. Living

up in the mountains, we’re lucky to have those cooler evenings, and it’s nice to open the sliding doors by our dining table and embrace that. Were there any lessons you learned from clients’ projects that you applied to your own home? CO: One of the main takeaways from work-

ing with clients is that there can be a lack

62

of discipline [in designing and building homes]. So we took the time on the front end to outline our goals and objectives for design, budget, and schedule, and used them as our guidelines as we moved forward. An example of that was finding a way to afford the European white-oak floors; that was a nonnegotiable we were going to build around. Committing to the budget and schedule means that as the project evolves, you don’t get so emotional with every decision. KO: We’re a good team in that way because, of course, as a designer I have all kinds of ideas! But Cody would rope me in, saying,

“I have very expensive taste in furniture, so I have to figure out how I can bring it down to my budget level,” Kellye says. That means taking on DIY projects like the main bedroom’s oak bed with a headboard fashioned from a wallcovering left over from a client’s project. A steel ladder leads to a lofted office and workout area. Facing page: The kids have already put the main bathroom’s marble-esque porcelain tile to the test with a pink nail polish spill. “Luckily, it can take acetone, and it all came up,” Kellye says. She balanced the modern floating vanity by using knotty oak for a rustic feel; matte-black Brizo plumbing completes the look.

“This is more practical here,” or “We can tackle that later on.” He’s looking at all aspects of the project, I look at the pretty picture, and we come together and make it all work. You were such a good team, in fact, that you decided to work together full time, right? CO: We were about halfway through

constructing this home when I decided to make the jump to start OCG, our construction management and interior design firm; Kellye followed about six months later. KO: At the end of the project, we were still married! We survived the building process and working together—so why not do it for a living?

Right: A large Lee Industries sectional is the family’s preferred spot to cozy up for movie nights. Kellye chose the round Noir coffee table to break up the space’s straight lines and squared-off shapes. “I like to accessorize with artwork, pillows, colorful rugs—all things that can be easily changed out—and keep the fixed finishes of the home neutral and warm,” she says.

A patch of grass—the only bit of landscaping on the property that requires significant watering—hosts field hockey practice and yard games like bocce.

Lights Out

The built-in whiskey shelf doubles as a secret door to the pantry.

CHEERS!

An intimate parlor gives a whiskey collection room to breathe. by ANGELA UFHEIL

96

Enjoying a carefree cocktail at a busy bar may have slipped off our list of weekend activities (for now), but here’s a handsome alternative: a dedicated whiskey room at home. As part of a larger renovation, interior designer Jennifer DesJardin of Motif Design Solutions used square footage from the former dining room to create the 12-by-9-foot space that accommodates her client’s extensive whiskey collection. Details including gold side tables and a board-game-ready ottoman have an inviting feel, and DesJardin’s decision to paint the walls and ceiling all one color (Sherwin-Williams’ Hunt Club in an eggshell finish) adds coziness. “It feels like the room is giving you a hug,” she says. Adding just a few pieces of art—including a large-scale painting to balance the accent wall and unify the palette—lets the bottles shine. And if there’s anything better than an intimate lounge in one’s own home, it’s a lounge with a secret door: Here, a gentle push swings a shelf open to reveal a passage into the kitchen’s walk-in pantry. The whole setup is what we’d call pandemic-proof design. motifdesignsolutions.com
