Freedom of Spirit

Goal: To learn about freedom of body verses freedom of the mind through contemporary Israeli song and Natan Sharansky’s speech.

Part I: Freedom?! We will begin the lesson by handing out a short worksheet. The worksheet is a questionnaire measuring one’s ideas about freedom. Waking up and going to school each day

Being a parent to small children

We will ask the participants to share their answers, conducting a discussion over different responses:  How can something we must do, be a form of freedom? (for example, raising children we already have)  Are we ever under the impression we are acting on free choice, when we are actually led by some unknown force? (for example, cigarettes which are addictive)  Which of the examples in the worksheet is the best example for freedom? Which is the least?

Part two: We’re all Slaves We will now listen to an Israeli rock song by Berry Sakharof. The song’s main theme talks about enslavement in its sublime form: “we are all slaves of someone…” In his song, he may be referring to the media, industrialism, globalism, or all of the above.
