Any credible historian or political scientist would perhaps argue that such an idea was sheer nonsense, that the world is far too complex and the number of possible future scenarios for any city far too vast to reasonably imagine that the notion of future-proofing was anything more than hyperbole. And yet, if the notion of future-proofing is seen as an ongoing process, rather than a definitive end result, then maybe the notion has more substance.

SINCE THE TURNING OF THE CENTURY,THE ADVANCEMENT OF INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY, AND THE AWARENCESS OF ENVIRONMENTAL SUSTAINABILITY HAVE LEAD TO THE CHANGE OF COSUMER BEHAVIOR AND SHIFTED THE GLOBAL ECONOMY FROM TRADITIONAL LINEAR CONSUMPTION TOWARD CIRCULAR CONSUMPTION TO AVOID THE TRADITIONAL MATERIAL AND ENERGY INTENSIVE BUSINESS MODEL. SUCH SHIFT CREATES A MAJOR IMPACT ON COMMODITY PRODUCTION AND CONSUMER BEHAVIOR ALLOWS THE WORLD TO BE MORE SUSTAINABLE THAN EVER. BUT HOW ABOUT CONSTRUCTION INDUSTY? IN NETHERLAND, GERMANY AND JAPAN, THE IDEA OF COLLECTIVE LIVING BEGIN TO TAKE SHAPE.GOVERNMENT FUNDED HOUSING PROJECTS THAT ENCOURAGE YOUNG PEOPLE AND SENIOR CITIZENS TO LIVE COLLECTIVELY HAVE START TO GAIN MOMENTUM IN THESE COUNTRIES. PERHEPS SUCH COLLECTIVE HOUSING PROJECTS PROVIDE A BASIS FOR US, AS ARCHITECTS, IN ENVISIONING FUTURE RESIDENTIAL SPACES. As sea levels are rising globally, many cities around the world are under threat from water. Some areas are projected to disappear completely in the next few decades. Therefore, designing houses to float may, in some instances, be safer than building on land and risking frequent floods. Water is a workable building layer or a floating foundation and if you turn water into space, which is a dramatic change of mindset, there’s a whole new world of possibilities.

In collaboration with New York City, The BIG U proposal was developed to protect Lower Manhattan from floodwater, storms, and other impacts of a changing climate. The BIG U calls for a protective system around the low-lying topography of Manhattan beginning at West 57th Street, going down to The Battery, and then back up to East 42nd Street. it provides social and environmental benefits to the community, and an improved public realm. 8.
