HHC Family Update September is…National Preparedness Month! Take action and join the National Preparedness Community at to get access to a toolkit full of resources for promoting emergency preparedness and to receive email updates from FEMA.

On-Post Activities Sept 5 (7pm) – Operation Rising Star audition night at the Warrior Zone. The contest continues Sept. 12 and 19 with finals Sept. 26. JBLM Operation Rising Star performers will receive $500 for first place, $250 for runnerup and $100 for third place, along with a $300 spirit award to encourage audience participation and Internet exposure of local competitions via social media and Local winners and, in some cases, second-place finishers, will have a shot at becoming 2013 Operation Rising Star champion. Military Extension Internship Program The September 20 application deadline for the Spring 2014 internship is fast approaching. This program helps university students and recent graduates gain professional skills, and real-world experience with military child and youth programs, which will help them competitively enter the workforce.

The Office of the Judge Advocate General is now accepting applications for the Army’s Funded Legal Education Program. Under this program, the Army projects sending up to 25 active duty commissioned officers to law school at government expense. Selected officers will attend law school beginning the Fall of 2014 and will remain on active duty while attending law school. Interested officers should review Chapter 14, AR 27-1 (The Judge Advocate General’s Funded Legal Education Program) to determine their eligibility. This program is open to commissioned officers in the rank of second lieutenant through captain. Applicants must have at least two, but not more than six, years of total active Federal service at the time legal training begins. Eligibility is governed by statute (10 U.S.C. 2004) and is non-waivable. Eligible officers interested in applying should immediately register for the earliest offering of the Law School Admission Test. Applicants must send their request through command channels, to include the officer’s branch manager at AHRC, with a copy furnished to the Office of the Judge Advocate General, ATTN: DAJA-PT (Ms. Yvonne Caron-Rm 2B517), 2200 Army Pentagon, Washington, DC 20310, to be received by 1 November 2013. Submission of the application well in advance of the deadline is advised. Interested officers should contact the Office of the Staff Judge Advocate at 253-477-1900 for further information. Off-Post Activities Sept 7 – Military Appreciation Day at Cabelas. Flier Sept 9 & 16 – Military Appreciation Mondays at the Washington Fair, Puyallup. Sept 12-15 – Men’s Retreat to Maibu Canada. Open to all servicemembers serving in the Puget Sound Region. A nightly program led by Bill Paige, a retired military and retired police detective from the New York Metropolitan area. Flier Sept 21 (1-4pm) – Outdoor Adventure Day for the adventurous kids. Kids and their guardian will learn the basic outdoor skills including knot tying, fire starting, plant recognition, and outing up a tent with Pierce County’s Companionship Program. Kids will also learn basic first aid, do some hiking, and round out the afternoon with campfire stories. Preregistration is required on or before Sept. 18. Flier.
