Organic Produce vs. GMO’s At Bamford Produce we always support Sustainable practices that generally refers to farming that produces quality products and contributes positively to the environment and society. We offer Organic produce through our sister Company, Fresh Advancements, one of the largest sellers of Certified Organic produce within the Ontario Food Terminal. Our Program includes sourcing from Organic farmers that use natural methods such as crop rotation, reduced tillage and natural fertilizers to promote soil health, fight weeds, pests and diseases. We only buy products that are grown according to a set of standards accredited by several certifying bodies operating in Ontario. Also, at Bamford Produce, food safety will always be a top priority. Our rigorous safety standards are applied at every level of the supply chain from auditing suppliers, to daily testing of processed items, and finally, monitoring temperatures during shipping.
Organic farming, by definition, does not use environmentally harmful chemicals that may contaminate rain and groundwater. Organic farming also replenishes and maintains healthy, fertile topsoil with rich biological matter, which does not erode into waterways. Since Organic production systems are managed in accordance with the Act and regulations to promote ecological balance, and conserve biodiversity, GMO’s are not allowed in organic products. 2501-A Stanfield Road, Mississauga L4Y 1R6
Genetically Modified Organism (GMO)
A plant, animal, or microorganism that is transformed by genetic engineering. The result of genetic engineering is called a "product of genetic engineering". Genetically engineered foods have not been shown to be safe to eat and may have unpredictable consequences. Many scientists are worried that the genetically altered foods, once consumed, may pass on their mutant genes to bacterium in the digestive system because GMO’s require massive amounts of pesticides, herbicides and fungicides. Organic practices manage techniques that restore, maintain and enhance ecological harmony and DO NOT modify or alter produce genetics.
Additionally, Bamford Produce promotes Local food consumption to preserve genetic diversity. Family farms grow a huge number of varieties to extend their growing season, provide eye-catching colors and great flavor. Many varieties are “heirlooms” passed down through the generations because of their excellent flavor. Older varieties contain the genetic structure of hundreds or thousands of years of human selection and may provide the diversity needed to thrive in a changing climate.
