Library Holiday Food Drive

Did you know that 110,000 children on Long Island are at risk of hunger? To help fight hunger this holiday season, the Mineola Memorial Library will be hosting a food drive to benefit the Long Island food bank, Island Harvest. A receptacle will be located in the lobby of the library from Thursday, November 8 to Tuesday, December 18 to collect donated items. Suggested items include, but are not limited to, canned vegetables, baby food, baby formula, soups, canned fruit, nutritional beverages such as Boost or Ensure, cereal, pasta, bottled juices, personal care items such as toothpaste and deodorant, and more. Please note: before donating food, please check the expiration date on the items. Donated items must not be expired and must be non-perishable. Labels for Education Collection

The library now collects “Labels for Education” from products such as Campbell’s and Pepperidge Farm. You can drop off clean labels and bottle tops at the Circulation Desk, Reference Desk, or Children’s Room. A list of participating products can be found at www. labelsforeducation.com. New Year’s resolution…pay off your library fines! During the month of January 2013, bring in Labels for Education labels in exchange for fines on your card. Some restrictions apply. Children’s Room Receives Target Grant!

The Mineola Children’s Library is proud to announce that we have been awarded a Target grant to develop circulating Storytime kits in a bag that you can take home with you! Each bag will be based on a theme and include relevant books, finger plays or flannel boards, toys, games, and more. These bags will be available to Mineola library cardholders only. Look for these great kits in the near future!

February 2013 John Telfer – A photographer from Carle Place, whose 11X14 color and black and white photos will be shown in the Walter & Joan Hobbs Art Gallery and in our display case upstairs. His photography consists of scenes of Long Island to the West Coast, and action scenes of people and animals.

Chinese Culture: Its Myths and Legends*, Saturday, February 23 at 2:00PM George Wei’s engrossing presentation will focus on Chinese history, a brief overview of key dynasties, classic stories, musical instruments, dance (Shen Yun)—which uses dance to express 5,000 years of civilization and its values.
