About Possibilities

I

n the space and time, the arrangement and combination of fami-

ly, education, society, science and technology give birth to Charles Hung. He is optimistic and positive, longing for a life that experiences new challenges. He likes to explore the contradictions existing in daily life, observes interpersonal interaction, psychological and emotional changes for finding the possibilities of design.

During the four years study in the design department of Taiwan Tech, he had been exposed to a wide range of design fields, understood the thinking tools and methods of design, as well as the design process, details, interaction and human factors concepts of products and objects. Moreover, he discovered his interest in studying interaction and speculative design. Besides, he had participated in many teams, workshops and large-scale activities. In the process, he not only accumulated practical experience in cooperation and management, but also acquired good communication skills.

He believes that design can reverse the relationship between people, objects and environment, thus bring better life to people’s body and mind. In addition, he considers that there are many different possibilities in the future of world with design. He hopes that after making great efforts, he could break through limits and make progress, find his own design philosophy, and diligently create his value and social influence.

Charles Hung Resume 家庭、教育、社會、科技等人事時地物與生活資訊的排 列組合,孕育出了這個時空的洪鵬凱。他樂觀積極,嚮 往充實自我、體驗新挑戰的生活,喜歡探索存在於日常 的矛盾、對人際互動和心理情感變化進行觀察、自我對 話與反思,從中找尋設計發揮的可能性。

經歷臺科設計系的四年學習,他廣泛接觸了各類設計領 域、了解設計之思考工具、方法運用,以及產品物件之

設計流程、細節、互動與人因概念,也發掘其對於研究 互動、探索推測設計的興趣。大學以來,他加入許多團 隊及工作坊、大型活動的籌辦,過程中累積合作與管理 的實戰經驗之外,也具備了良好溝通能力。

他認為藉由設計,能翻轉人與物件、環境的關係,為人

們的身心靈帶來更好的生活;同時也相信投入設計的未 來,存在著更多不同的可能性。他期許自己,在歷經淬 鍊後,能夠遇見創新突破與成長、找到屬於自己的設計 哲學,創造自我價值與社會影響力。

OPENHCI 2019 OpenHCI is a human-computer interaction workshop organized by student to promote HCI and interdisciplinary cooperation. During the workshop, students from different fields went through a series of lectures and implementation to complete the design process. Through cooperation and communication, students put their ideas into practice and explore a more harmonious vision of HCI.

Intro : About HCI HCI( 人機互動領域 ) 是研究人與機器互動關係的跨領域學門。研究著眼點不但訴求技術、 更試圖從以人為本的角度去探討,以創造更佳的使用者經驗。HCI 學門獨特的複合特性, 使得其創造過程需要高度的跨領域合作,而 OpenHCI 的宗旨即是規廣該領域。

HCI(human-computer interaction)is the interdisciplinary study of how people interact with computers. The purpose of OpenHCI is to promote HCI. The unique complexity of HCI makes it's development requires a high degree of interdisciplinary cooperation.

在工作坊中,我擔任小組 TA 的角色,協助溝通跨領域的組員,和團隊共同完成設計; 此外,我也加入活動人事組、幫助籌備過程中的招募篩選、校方場地辦理等事項。

In the workshop, I served as TA to help cross-field team members cooperate and complete the design together. In addition, I joined the personnel team, helped with the recruitment and selection, and dealt with the campus space rental.

The Project Theme: How do solo backpackers record travels ?

單獨旅行有其特殊的自我意義,許多獨旅者記錄旅程,留待未來的自己回 憶過程中的感動,也分享給親友。專案聚焦單獨旅行背包客的旅行記錄與 回憶方式,期望藉由人機共生之設計,精進獨旅背包客的旅行體驗。

Traveling alone has the personal and special meaning. Many solo travelers record the journey to recall the touching memories in the future, and share it with their relatives and friends. Our design project focused on the travel record and recall ways of solo travelers, hoping to improve their travel experience through the design of human-computer symbiosis.

Empathy - Interviewing 為了更了解目標客群,我們首先設計訪談大綱並進行6場訪談。訪問已獨旅背包 客在旅行過程的不便之處、細節行為、感受、旅行的期望與意義等方面。

In order to further understand the target audience, we first designed the interview outline and conducted 6 interviews, visiting the inconvenience, detail behavior, feeling, expectation and meaning of the travel of the single backpackers.

Define - Affinity Diagramming 我們使用親和圖工具,運用線上便利貼程式,將蒐集到的受訪者資料進行歸

納與分類。挖掘背後的深層需求與洞見,彙整出代表性的人物誌 ( 詳見次頁 )。 We used affinity diagramming and the post-it notes website to classify the data collected from interviewees. Then we found the deep needs and insights behind the data, and consolidated into persona.(Please see the next page.)

Motivation Ethan would take a solo trip on a regular basis. He thinks traveling alone provides an opportunity for bililoquy and escaping from the city. All kinds of challenges, experience and surprise in the process make him feel his growth.

Motivation Kay likes to take an occasional solo trip. She thinks that the trip’s itinerary is highly flexible and allows for a wide exploration of local culture, scenery and cuisine. She also keeps a diary to record her feelings about the trip.

Frustration Ethan has the habit of recording his travels. However, the current way of recording is mainly visual and auditory, making him feel boring and rampant.

Frustration Whenever she shares her travels with others, she finds it hard to describe how delicious the food is. She can only share the photo rather than the fragrance.

Goals To record travel in ways other than visual and auditory, which allows him to recall the experience in special ways.

Goals A service that can record the taste, so that she could save the memory of the impressing flavor, and shares with others.

Define - Customer Journey Map 我們接著以人物誌作為基礎,完成顧客旅程地圖。梳理獨旅的流程、找出關鍵 時刻、痛點及接觸點,幫助團隊找出共識,確立設計方向。

We then completed the customer journey map(CJM) based on the persona, and sorted out the process of solo travel to find out the key moments, needs and touch points, which helps we find out the consensus and the design direction.

Ideate - Researching 完成定義階段後,我們尋找記憶味道相關之資料,發現心理學中嗅覺與大腦記 憶、情感的特殊關係,以及嗅覺感官本身的特殊性與不可取代性。

After completing the definition phase, we searched for information and found the special relationship of scent, memory and emotion in psychology, as well as the particularity and unsubstitutability of olfactory sense.

The olfactory sense is the keenest sense to recall emotional memories. The olfactory is the only one of our five senses that does not pass through the thalamus, but sends stimulation directly to the brain, which let it become the gland highly associated with emotional and instinctive responses.

Kalain takes the clothes containing the scent from the customers, and copies it into a memory perfume, which can become or a souvenir or a gift.

Smell Memory Kit helps users create a variety of precious memories and experience by smelling the abstract flavor stored in the special container.

Cyrano is a scent player similar as a music player. Users can download the app to play the smells and even write their own olfactory suites through it.

Ideate - Design Reference 接著我們運用網路資源,查找市面上,與氣味有關的產品及服務,並 了解如氣味分子感測器 、電子鼻等相關技術,用以輔助發想設計。

We then used Internet resources to search for odor-related products and services on the market and learn about technologies such as odor molecular sensors and electronic noses to inspire the design.

Ideate - Interaction Brainstorming Card 我們使用臺科設計研究所空間媒體組的互動卡牌,協助小組發想設計。相對腦力激 盪及心智圖工具,卡牌的引導幫助成員思考更多設計可能性及互動想法。而後,團 隊也構思出以嗅覺為主的設計提案。

We used the interactive card made by Taiwan Tech Spatial Media Group to assist the team in ideating. Compared with brainstorming and mind mapping, the guidance of cards helps members think about more design possibilities and interaction ideas. The team then came up with a design proposal based on the olfactory sense.

Prototype & Test 確立設計概念後,我們分工合作,進行 lo-fi、草模製作與測試,藉此呈現想 像中的設計物造型、互動操作及可能的技術實現原理。同時,我們也完成發 表與展覽所需的影片拍攝、海報及簡報製作。

After the design concept is established, we work together for lo-fi prototyping and testing in order to present the imagined design modeling, interactive operation and possible technical implementation principles. At the same time, we also completed the film shooting, poster and presentation for the publication and exhibition.

During the presentation and exhibition on the last day, we introduced the creation, provided others with experiencing of our design and exchanged ideas, which let us gain many valuable opinions from teachers, experts and students, learning more about the direction of work improvement.

Reodour Reodour 是一款設計給「獨自旅行背包客」的服務,包括嗅 覺相機、氣味印表機、氣味收集冊之設計。透過嗅覺與儀式性 的互動方式加深體驗,喚起獨旅者於旅程當下切身感受到的回 憶,也能將這份感動分享給親朋好友。

Reodour is a service designed for "solo travelers" including scent cameras, odor printers, and collection books. Through the olfactory sense and ritualistic interaction, Reodour not only helps user deepen the experience and recall the odor-relatived memory of the journey, but also let them share it with friends and family.

The scent camera is paired with Dyson airflow technology to help capture odors. The hollow part is designed to assist solo travelers to collect images of the relevant smells. 2 儀式性的操作,讓獨旅者產生獨特記憶體

驗。採集的氣味將轉換成數據傳送至晶片。 The ritualistic operation gives user a unique memory experience. The collected odors are converted into data and transfer to the chip.

Take out the chip , the “key” to the memory of the journey, and insert it into the scent printer. After selecting the scent and photo the user wants to print, the object stored with the impressing moment is generated as if the safe of the memory were gradually turned open.

Summary - As a teammate 一直以來,我樂於參加與籌備各類工作坊,促成交流的發生。OPENHCI

是我參與的各類學生工作坊中,最具完整性的。不僅讓我對於 HCI 領域 有更深的認識,也在擔任 TA 的過程中吸收寶貴的學習經驗,和跨領域同 學們一同發揮所長、碰撞思維,激盪出創意。最終我也期許自己,於下 一屆的活動中擔任總召或幹部要職,延續良好品牌及價值創造。

I have been willing to take part in and prepare various workshops to facilitate the exchange. Participating in Openhci not only allowed I to have a deeper understanding of HCI, but also let me absorb valuable learning experience in the process of serving as TA, and inspired creativity with members from different fields. At last, I hope that I can serve as the coordinator or a key director in the next activity, continually delivering the extraordinary ideas and value.

The workshop focuses on emotional design and speculative design. Every year, it integrates various course planning, discussion and implementation activities to discuss the complexity, contradiction, behavioral impact and related design of emotions. The theme of 2017 explores the multifaceted and contradictory aspects of pleasure. Using design as a medium, explore and imagine how these abstract and difficult to express emotions can be evoked and communicated.

Yearning is a comprehensive emotion. As time passing, the past, present and future will all become memories. The Workshop explore the ways and possibilities of emotions, and sublimate it into another form of remembrance.

來到籌備中後期,團隊處理老師接洽與課程細節確立、 教材添購、學員投稿之審核等事項,同時也透過試跑、 沙推的方式,測試各項活動環節,進行不斷地跌代改善。 In the middle and last stage of preparation, the team dealt with teacher contact, course details discussing, teaching material purchasing, student submission review. Meanwhile, the team also tested various activity through rehearsal to make continuous improvement.

內容 : 邀請徐景亭設計師,探索場域與器物、情緒的關

Content: Designer Gina Hsu to explore the correlation and regeneration of objects and emotions, letting students create exchange gifts that respond to their own emotions. Objective: to study the execution techniques and creative attempts of emotional design. 2

The Interaction of Emotions

內容 : 邀請梁容輝博士以互動的觀點剖析情感,並使用 互動卡牌協助學員進行情緒的發想與討論。

目的 : 激發對於情緒的想像、了解基礎互動觀念。 Content: We Invited Dr. Liang to analyze emotions from interactive perspectives, and use interaction cards to assist students in emotional development and discussion. Objective: to stimulate the imagination of emotion and understand the basic concept of interaction.

內容 : 邀請詹慧珍設計師介紹食物設計領域與情緒的連

內容 : 邀請宮保睿設計師,透過推測設計探討情緒在人 體、文化與生物多樣性等面向的關係。

目的 : 將多元議題、批判性思考與科學想像融入設計。 Content: Designer Paul Gong to explore the relationship between emotions in human body, culture and biological diversity through speculative design. Objective: to integrate multiple issues, critical thinking and scientific imagination into the design.

Memories of life and death 內容 : 邀請寧森藝術家營造全黑的空間,讓學員進行一場生

目的 : 以廣闊維度認知情緒、及其與藝術之連結性。 Content: We Invited artist Nings to create an all dark space for students to have a self-talk of life journey, memory and emotion. Objective: to understand emotion and its connection with art from a broad field. 2

Concertizing the Feelings 內容 : 邀請邱韻哲治療師,帶領學員創作出自我的情緒形 狀,探討創作藝術在心理學、醫學的效用。

目的 : 認識透過創作療育情緒之手法,達成心靈沉澱。 Content: Therapist Art Sir to lead the students to create the emotional shape of themselves, and discuss the effect of creative art in psychology and medicine. Objective: to understand the technique of creating emotional therapy to achieve psychological precipitation.

工作坊也規劃彈性交流之活動,讓學員與老師、籌辦團隊近 距離交流心得想法、享用火鍋暢談。在探討情感設計之餘, 也聯絡感情,賦予活動更多意義與回憶。

The workshop also plans flexible activities for students to exchange ideas with teachers and teams. In addition to discussing emotional design, we also connected feelings and give activities more meaning and memories.

After the Workshop

在工作坊結束後,團隊彙整來自各方對於活動之回饋與建議, 整理為結案報告與檢討資料,傳承給下一屆,以期活動在跌代 的過程中持續進步。

The team collected feedback and suggestions from others, compiling the final report and review materials, and passed them on to the next session for making continuous progress in the process of the activity.

Summary - As a Chief Director 參與小情設工作坊三年,除了發覺自身對於情感探討的興趣,更多的 是各界師生多元交流的實現。企劃組為工作坊的核心組別,在處理各 類型工作的同時,也創造與各方合作、對話、建立更深連結的機會,

並在過程中獲得反饋、更加了解自我。小情設在我的大學生涯佔有不 可或缺的地位,象徵我對於參與工作坊之價值與熱忱。

Participating in the workshop for three years, I not only discovered my interest in emotional discussion, but also realized my vision of enabling people exchange ideas with each other. The planning team is the core group of the workshop. While dealing with various types of work, it also creates opportunities for cooperation, dialogue, and deeper connection with others, as well as gaining feedback and understanding of ourselves in the process. The workshop plays an indispensable role in my college career, symbolizing my value and enthusiasm for participating in activities.

TAIWAN TECH DESIGN WEEK 2019 Taiwan Tech Design Week(TTDW) is organized by students of the design department. The event devotes to highlighting the brand of Taiwan Tech Design, achieving design cooperation and exchange, and builds a stage for students to perform their talents outside classes. TTDW is dedicated to continuous innovations and attemption, and has been expanded to an inter-school design carnival.

About Taiwn Tech Design Week 2019 本次的設計週主要包含三大活動,分別為:作業成果展,精粹展出臺科設計學生作品;設計 工作坊,與跨領域同學合作、激盪出嶄新設計與創意;作品集交流會,與業界設計師近距離 交流,打破產學疆界。致力透過校際設計嘉年華,推廣臺科設計品牌特色。

The workshop focuses on emotional design and speculative design. Every year, it integrates various course planning, discussion and implementation activities to discuss the complexity, contradiction, behavioral impact and related design of emotions. In addition, the workshop combines multiple fields to explore the multiple possibilities of emotional design.

“ Knock Knock ” 本屆主題「敲敲」 ,象徵我們嘗試、碰觸、敲擊, 透過設計持續探索、試驗與創造,製造衝撞與 發出訊號,期待來自另一端的回應。

The year’s theme “Knock Knock” symbolizes that we continue to explore, attempt and create through design, creating collisions and sending out signals, expecting responses from the other side.

My job description 在設計週中,我擔任總召領導團隊,並管理主軸活動之一的設計工作坊。負責組織執掌、 處理校方與團隊等各方關係人之溝通,及活動企劃、展策等核心事項。

I served as the coodinator to lead the team, and managed the design workshop, one of the main events. During TTDW, I worked on organization, and handled the communication between the school and the team, as well as the core issues of activity planning and exhibition planning.

Discover, Define, Develop, Deliver 設計工作坊為期四個月,團隊依據設計流程拆解為四階段。從專案發想與製作、 授課,至後期的策展規劃與展期活動,整體經歷二度的發散與收斂。

The design workshop lasted for four months, and was divided into four stages from the design process. Overall , the workshop experience two divergence and convergence.

Discover : Creative Matrix Workshop 最初的發想階段,我們帶領學員使用創新矩陣、腦力激盪等設計工具,構想與主題、 聲音相關之設計概念,並請導師協助引導,收斂出核心理念。

We led the students to use creative matrixs and other design tools to brainstorm concepts related to the theme and sound, asking the tutor to help guide and converge the core ideas.

Discover : Lecture

工作坊過程中,我們邀請各領域之講師進行授課,幫助學員拓廣設計認 知,激發專案呈現的靈感與執行方式。同時推廣設計週活動到各界。

We invited lecturers from various fields to help the students broaden their knowledge of design and inspire the presentation and implementation of the project. Meanwhile to promote TTDW activities to all sectors.

Define : Discussing and Working

學員們不僅歷經數次原型製作與提案磨練,也學習專案工作程序之排定與 管理。導師及工作人員也參與執行過程,協助專案順利進行。

The students not only experienced prototyping and presentation, but also learned project scheduling and management. The Mentors and staff also participated in the implementation process to help the project run smoothly.

Develop : Evaluation

工作坊後期舉行共評交流會,我們邀請系上老師及業師,對於學員們 的作品給予建議及回饋。也幫助學員精進專案,邁向最終展覽。

We also held a work reviews, which invited teachers from the department to give suggestions and feedback on students' works, helping the students to make progress and prepare for the final exhibition.

Deliver : Move-in and Install

進到策展及佈置階段,我們除了思考展場動線、展示規劃外,也處理許多實務 面上所碰到的問題。最終,在全體工作人員與學員的努力下,順利完成展出。

We then moved into exhibition curating and arranging. In addition to planning the moving lines and manipulation, we also dealt with many practical problems. Finally, with the efforts of all staff and students, the exhibition was successfully completed.

Summary - As a Coordinator 「設計是持續探索、試驗與創造。」這是本次團隊共同構思的設計週理

念。這樣的願景除了表現於作品,更體現在合作籌備。透過不斷地碰撞、 嘗試,突破難關,我們創造遠超越自身所能達到的成果。這是團隊合作 的魅力所在,也是我擔任總召一職的最深感觸。期許未來,也能夠發揮 凝聚眾人的力量,持續地「敲敲」,期待著更多的回應與感動。

"Design is to continuously explore, attempt and create." It is the TTDW concept jointly conceived by the team. The vision is also reflected in our cooperation and preparation. By constantly colliding, trying, and overcoming obstacles, we achieved the success far beyond what one could reach. It is the fascinating of teamwork and what I deeply engaged in while actting as a coordinator. In the future, I hope I could exert the ability of gathering people, keeply "Knock Knock" to explore more responses.
