OPENINGS Austin City Taco Co. While there’s no lack of good tacos in the 107, we think there’s always room for more. In the former Grotto location on University Drive comes Austin City Taco, a new concept from owner Cameron “Cam” Powell of Fort Worth — an ardent University of Texas alum, hence the name. Powell made the right move in hiring Magdalena’s owner-chef Juan Rodriguez to create a menu that includes chicken, brisket, pork, shrimp and veggie options. The breakfast versions are served all day. The tender brisket is cooked in-house using a high-tech smoker and post oak, and is served chopped or sliced with toppings such as pickled cabbage or fried onion strings. The chicken includes fried yard bird, but we like the rotisserie version, especially in the al carbon taco. Don’t miss the al pastor pork or the grilled shrimp with its jalapeno-vinegar glaze. Our favorite from the breakfast menu is the Midnight Craving, loaded with scrambled eggs, potatoes, queso fresco, bacon jam and buttermilk ranch dressing. The tortillas are housemade, Fill up on tacos, queso topped with bacon jam and a side and that bacon jam is addictive. Sides of fries (chips also are available). include a flavorful queso, salsa and Photos by Ron Jenkins guacamole. Dessert is soft-serve vanilla ice cream topped with crispy bits of colorful and crispy cereal. Quench your thirst with a variety of bottled and canned beer, wine and sodas or opt for a frozen margarita or swirl. Along with brewed coffee, they also have nitro cold brew on tap. It’s counter service only, and the space is smartly done inside and out with graphic tile, banquettes and comfortable seating. The covered patio seats about 20. Parking can be scarce on weekends and during peak dinner hours. 517 University Drive, 817-945-1234, austincitytaco.com.
