DECKING RANGE

The Greenleaf® Decking Range comprises of two main options designed for the individual needs of our customers. If you are looking for ease and speed of build the Greenleaf® Decking System is your best option. Should you wish to embark on your own project there is the option of the Greenleaf® Decking Component Range. •

Greenleaf® Decking System The Greenleaf® Decking System is a modular kit of pre-cut to length, pre-machined and pre-drilled components, all supplied complete with ironmongery. The balustrade panels are pre-manufactured and are supplied ready to fit between newel posts. Once foundations are complete, you should expect to be able to complete a deck in less than a day, dependent on size and complexity. Almost all decking offered on the market is supplied as lengths of treated timber, requiring considerable planning and carpentry to construct a deck. The Greenleaf® System was developed in answer to the need for decks that are truly “do-it-yourself”

Greenleaf® Decking Components A range of deckboards, newels, rails, balusters and caps to allow you to design and build a deck to your own individual design.

15 year Guarantee on all Greenleaf® Timber Decking Products All Greenleaf® timber decking products are manufactured from European Softwood, which has been pressure treated with Osmose Naturewood Timber Preservative. Once dried, the preservative, is chemically fixed in the timber and is clean, odourless and harmless to pets, plants and people. It provides effective protection against brown and white rot, soft rot and insect attack. The Greenleaf® decking system was designed to be built above ground level and has been preservative treated to the correct specification to suit this intended purpose. Freshly treated timber is a blue-green colour, which quickly changes to green as the timber dries. After several months, the treated timber weathers to a natural honey brown colour. When required, an extensive range of water repellents and stains available from Ridgeons can be applied once the treated timber has dried. It is essential that an appropriate end coat preservative is applied where the timber is cut, notched or drilled after treatment to maintain the longevity of the Osmose Guarantee. Timber is a natural product and is susceptible to possible changes in an outdoor environment. Variation in moisture content may well cause some distortion or surface checks to timber during its life time and is perfectly natural. This will not affect structural integrity.

DECKING RANGE

Building onto un-prepared ground DECKING

Only the ringbeam needs to be in contact with the foundation and we believe the easiest way to achieve this is by bedding the deck ringbeams in pea shingle. You will need to remove the top soil first, particularly for the ringbeam. If it is deeper than 300mm, you will then need to backfill to within 70mm or so of the top with hardcore, brick rubble or similar before levelling off with some pea shingle. On top of the first layer of pea shingle, we advise you to lay a sheet of permeable membrane, which allows water to pass through but will help prevent weeds growing up. On top of this, you can put your final layer of pea shingle and then level your ringbeams into position. (Permeable membrane is available from your local Ridgeons branch). If you have less than 200mm below the patio door sill, you will need to establish your pea shingle level below the existing ground level*. Adopt the same foundation procedure as above, but backfill between the soil and the outside of the ring-beam with pea shingle. This will help ensure good drainage. *We recommend that the bottom of your deck should not be lower than 90-100mm below ground level.

ice The natural cho

Building onto an existing patio This has the potential to be your easiest option because, subject to your having sufficient height above the existing patio to the underside of the door sill (or proposed sill), you can place the deck ringbeam directly onto the patio, using it to provide the necessary support. The difficulty arises when the patio is not level and the deck frame rocks. Bearing in mind that the deck ringbeams only need to be supported at the corners and intermediate points not more than 2m apart. You could achieve this by removing superfluous slabs.

It may be that, because of insufficient clearance to the underside of the patio or door sill, the slabs need removing to lower the level and, if the ground beneath has been suitably prepared, it may be that no further foundation work is necessary. However, before positioning your deck, it is important that you lay a sheet of permeable membrane as mentioned above. After you have laid the permeable membrane, a layer of pea-shingle will enable you finally to level the ringbeam. Note: Greenleaf® decks have been designed to rest evenly on levelled ground. Sloping sites may require the construction of a structural sub-frame. This, plus its possible height may require the deck to satisfy Building Regulations for structure, balustrade height, etc. These situations are beyond the scope of these notes and we recommend you seek advice from a Professional if your deck may fall into this category.
