Design Project: Designing mobile phones for older users This design reviewed the human factors requirements of mobile phones in order to facilitate inclusive design and provide older users with technological support that enhanced their day-to-day lives. Initial design consideration was given to understanding what it meant to be an older user and the changes that occurred along with the aging process. From this standpoint, attention was given to the design of mobile phones, considering how human factors were reflected in product design and context of use beyond the phone handset to wider interaction environment. Conceptual design solutions are shown as below: Factor

General effect on older users

Vision

-ability to deal with glare diminishes „

Hearing

-general threshold deteriorates

Hand function -general weakness (strength and grip) -dexterity is often impaired -range of movement is more limited Cognitive -processing time – with working processes memory

If a display is required, use antiglare coatings to display. Couple auditory feedback with visual or tactile feedback. Design casings that are easy to hold and keys so they are easy to press (oversized and/or easy press). Group keys by use and function. Keep menu structures intuitive and consistent. Make user interfaces as simple as possible

Design Project: New ideas for old people-Electric scooter design Easy-going is a shopping electric scooter designed for the elderly. Its special feature is the spare space on the front big wheel. It can be changed into a trolley when needed to store any goods and personal accessories. It also has two options, one for those healthy elder people, and the other is for those who are slower in movements. The goal was not only to find specific carrying solutions for older people but also to create attractive solutions that work for all generations with universal design.

Design Project: Electronic pet design for children and older adults This concept proposed a set of PUE (Positive User experience) model of electronic pet design. This new device called “Companion Chicken CHUBI,” which may bring companionship to older adults who live alone. This “electronic pet” is capable of holding conversations, telling jokes, and reminding owners to take medications and conduct basic health checks.

Design Project: Touch your heart-Multimedia information System The touch your heart, a multisided continuing care service provider, is committed to promoting quality of life and providing quality care for older people. 3D images are showed as media of communication through two-way projection of the digital candleholder and candle. The surface of the candleholder that contains digital sensor can be used to receive or send messages in different situations. The functions of the digital candle include record of digital sounds and images, on–line meeting and message projection. It is portable to record digital messages after the older people draw the candle from the candleholder.

Design Project: Interactive Product Design The fields relating to interaction design have dealt primarily with software and interface design. Commonly used evaluation methods, such as observation, Heuristic Evaluation and Cognitive Walkthrough were developed with an eye towards improving usability of product interfaces. One of my current projects is to design interactive product interface and accurately visualize the prototype of digital design solutions. Through these interface prototype and evaluation methods, I can find out what kinds of problems older adults would encounter and provide practical suggestions for interface designer.

Design Project: Database on Human Factors and Aging This original idea began at my master degree stage. The database reference lists contain articles that have been published in English/Chinese in paper journals and in these edited books from different organizations specialized in the Human Factors and Aging. Most articles included in this database were published since 1990 and were collected and classified according to their major focus. Several articles were classified in more than one category for the researcher taken. Moreover, the lists are updated periodically.

Course Project: Elderly Simulation Program for college students In 2008, I had an opportunity to teach a class named “Access by Design” for the sophomore students of design department. It is hoped that young designer, in general, can understand the hardships in daily life caused by aging and the psychological state of the elderly in areas where people live to an advanced age. In such a situation, making use of the elderly simulation program is considered to be beneficial for older people product designers of, in general, to gain a better understanding. As the result of participation in this program, the students were better able to understand hardships the elderly have in many activities and behaviors. Moreover, their attitudes towards the elderly became more empathetic. In conclusion, it is thought that the elderly simulation program is effective for better understanding the behavior and psychological state of the elderly in the college design courses. The elements of simulating “old age” experience include: n Earplugs o Special glasses p Vest to increase weight q Elbow supporter and Wrist Weight q Knee Support and Ankle Weight r Old age" simulating Gloves s Shoes-type Supporter
