NWA Lancaster Dairy Sale Tuesday 15th January January Show and Sale Off with a bang with strong entry and £3,250 top. A great entry totalling 79 there was a real choice of both heifers and cows pedigree and non-registered alike which certainly attracted a great crowd and an ever growing buzz and feel good atmosphere at the market.

First off, many thanks to our judge for the day JB & JB Lawson, Bank End Farm, Cockerham. The large number of entries made a challenging job even harder, however, a terrific job was done.

A job well done on the judging front it was down to business the judges were clearly focused on taking the day’s champion home with them. Consigned by Drinkall Bros, Pennine Poppy 1376, currently yielding 31.kg having calved on 14th December, sold for £2,300. Drinkall Bros had a strong line up of heifers at the sale with many cruising past the £2,000 mark.

Keeping in the rosettes and the reserve champion; Galastar Mogul Ola 2 consigned by Enchanted Holsteins was an absolute cracker of a heifer with her quality reflecting in her taking top price of the day. A PLI of £373, having calved on 24th December and giving 34.kg she was sold for £3,250 and heading to R & RA Jones, Pied House, Garthmyl, Powys.

A real eye on quality R & RA Jones also took home a cracking heifer entered by Tomlinson Bilsrow Ltd, Bilsrow Caballero Elite was a heifer with real strength and lots of milk behind her. Having calved on Christmas day and giving 31.kg. A strong entry from Tomlinson Bilsrow Ltd, they reached £2,800 and averaged £2,262.50 for the day which included a second lactation cow. Staying with the heifers, the pick of the group entered by J Burrow & Son, Tunsteads Farm was Stardale Mars Vaakje 3. A real prominent family with 12 generations of very good/ excellent was snapped up by D Davies, Gwndwn Farm, Newinn, Camarthan for £2,500 who also took home Ingleview Dempsey Crystal, with 9 generations behind her she had the looks and the pedigree to boot and was sold for £2,450.

We were pleased to welcome first time vendor AE & MK Hayhurst who entered two non-registered animals which included a real milky heifer sired by Motivator, it was yielding 37.kg and was sold to JS & KM Wilson & Son, High House, Longmeadow Lane.

Moving onto the cows and with a good number entered, trade for cows was certainly brisk and leading the way was a 2nd calved cow of real quality entered by the Inman Family. Witherslack Solomon Vall, had real strength and plenty of milk, currently yielding 42.kg having calved 27th December. She finally sold for £1,980 and was snapped up by JS & KM Wilson & Son. Other notable entries on the cow front included a real milky 2nd calver entered by regular and supporter to the sale MJ & H Atkinson; Wyredale Alpine Sonya 3 yeilding 40.kg having calved on 31st December and giving 8,464 kg in her first lactation was sold for £1,800 to M J & K Ayrton, Bambers Farm, Moss Lane.

Thanks must go to our vendors new and regular for supporting the sale and providing quality animals month on month. Entries increasing for both non-registered and registered animals there really is a cracking buzz around Lancaster.

Lancaster Sale Reports Friday 11th January 2018 The weekly sale of Store Cattle saw steers achieve a top price of £1370 for Charolais x from DE & SM Moorhouse, Natland with others selling to £1310 from H Chapman & Son, Middleton. Heavy steers sold from £1180 to £1380 which included Aberdeen Angus x achieving £1300 from L Parsons & Sons, Levens. Dairy steers sold to £1130 for Montbeliarde from P Lawrenson & Son, Brindle and Holstein Friesian from EJ Ward & Sons, Nether Kellet. All steers today averaged £1024. Heifers sold to a top price of £1250 for British Blue x from MJ Shepherd & Son, Pilling with Aberdeen Angus x to £1220 from J Tattersall, Preston. Well-fleshed heifers were generally selling from £1050 to £1150, all heifers today averaged £897.

A small number of Store Bulls forward sold to £660 for Hereford x from GJT & V Parkinson, Poulton-le-Fylde.

The weekly sale of Cull/OTM Cattle saw 91 forward achieving and overall market average for cull cows of 99p/kg. Beef cows sold to top of 147p/kg for British Blue x from TE, JS, SA Carruthers, Underbarrow with other heavy well-fleshed cows achieving 125p/kg-140p/kg. Medium beefs cows were generally selling 100p/kg-110p/kg for further feeding depending on quality. Dairy cows achieved a top price of 139p/kg from R Lawson & Son, Burton-in-Kendal with other heavy cows 100p/kg-105p/kg. Medium dairy cows 80p/kg-95p/kg with parlour cows 65p/ kg-80p/kg. Top grossing beef cow was £909 from EJ Ward & Son, Nether Kellet. Dairy sold to £1064 from DJ, A & L Sutcliffe, Preston. OTM Clean topped at £1328 for a Limousin x heifer from JS & KM Wilson & Son, Kendal with cull bulls to £1210 from HR & KR Hodgson, Barbon.

OTM Steers peaked at 164p/kg for a Friesian from EE Thornton & Son, Downlands with Fleckveih to 149p/kg from EW & RM Towers, Hornby. OTM dairy heifers sold to 177p/kg for Norwegian Red x from J & H Bland & Son Lts, Levens with others generally 125p/kg-150p/kg.

Several beef bred OTM heifers forward this week selling to 184p/kg for Lim x from JS & KM Wilson & Son, Kendal with Hereford X selling to 169p/kg from P & A Bell, Pilling.

Cull bulls sold to a top price of 159.5p/kg from D & E Whitaker, Quernmore with all cull bulls forward averaging 136p/kg.

An entry of predominantly younger Calves today saw a top price of £240 achieved for a Limousin Bull from A & MI Robinson, Orton with others selling to £235 from GCL Stephenson Ltd, Kirkby Lonsdale who also sold British Blue bulls to £225. Heifer calves sold to £200 for Limousin x from GCL Stephenson Ltd and £190 for British Blue x from JM & HM France & Son, Little Dale. Native bred calves saw Aberdeen Angus x bulls achieve £225 from JE & J Pye & Son, Quernmore with Hereford bulls selling to £200 from A & MI Robinson. Dairy bulls sold to £50 from TM Townley, Over Wyresdale with most young calves £25 to £40.

Several weaned calves forward sold to £395 for British Blue x bulls from AW & AM Park & Son, Ellel who also sold Aberdeen Angus bulls to £390.

Monday 14th January The weekly sale of Prime Hoggs at Lancaster had just shy of 300 forward selling to a slightly less market average of 182 p/kg this very much in line with markets at the similar time. There was plenty of continental hoggs selling around the 200p/kg mark. The trade topped at £101 from AG Butler of Hambleton with Texel hoggs with Suffolk’s to £100 from HJ & BE Kelsall of Gressingham. This was closely followed by Charolais hoggs from AB & J Parkinson and Son of Out Rawcliffe selling to £96 with plenty more selling around the ninety pound mark. Texel hoggs sold to 211p/kg from AG Butler of Hambleton with others to 210p/kg from J & H Davis of Cabus. Hill bred hoggs saw mules sell to a top of £80 from FK & F Woodhouse of Scorton with Cheviots topping at £79 from T Smith of Pilling with Scotch Black faces to £76 from WM Pye of Stodday.

There was a handful of Cast Sheep on offer this morning that sold to a top of £80 for Suffolk tups from TM Townley of Over Wyresdale with Texel ewes topping at £70 from JA Lambert of Out Rawcliffe. Mule ewes topped at £65 from S Wilson and son of Scotforth.

J36 Sale Reports Thursday 10th January The opening fortnightly sale of Calves had a larger entry of over 70 forward. A younger show of calves this week, with the trade matching other local markets. The trade topped at £255 for a British Blue bull from B Mallinson & Son, Levens. Younger beef bred bulls sold between £210 and £240. Native bred calves were good to sell topping at £250 for Aberdeen Angus Bulls & Heifers from R Morris Eyton & Son, Whicham and JW & TE Sharp, Lyth.

Dairy bred calves topped at £105 for Flekvichs from Messrs Wilson, Allithwaite, with Holstein bulls selling to a top of £82 from DR & C Galbraith, Grayrigg. Younger Black and white bulls sold between £35 and £60.

Other heavy, meaty beef cows were 105p/kg to 115p/kg with feeding types 85p/kg to 95p/kg dependent on quality. Dairy cows sold to 99.5p/kg from I & ME Askew with other heavy, well-fleshed cows 90p/kg to 95p/kg. Medium dairy cows 75p/kg to 85p/kg with the leanest sorts less.

Several OTM heifers forward selling to 119.5p/kg for Aberdeen Angus x from MJ & DJ Edwards with dairy heifers to 114.5p/kg from R & J Dodgson.

Top grossing beef cull cow today being a Limousin x from J & J Postlethwaite selling for £880 and the dairy selling at £725 from R & J Dodgson.

Store Cattle saw a top price of £860 for 7 month old Aberdeen Angus x steers from JJ & J Towers with 8 month old Limousin x steers £840 from GM Strong who also sold Montbeliarde x steers to £660. Heifers topped at £870 for Hereford x heifers from TE & J Wadsworth with British Blue x £830. Young heifers were £750 for British Blue x from GM Strong and Limousin x £740 from CD Slinger.

The monthly sale of Beef Breeding cattle had an entry of 44 forward with buyers in attendance from the Northern Counties, attracted by the dispersal sale of in-calf cows from MJ & DJ Edwards, Ormskirk.

In-calf Angus cows due April to the Angus bull sold to £1260, £1100, £950, Limousin x cows to £830, British Blue cows sold to £780 and Belted Galloway x cows to £660. The Angus bulls from the dispersal achieved £1900 and £1720.

Cows and calves sold to £1350 for a Simental x 2nd calver with a Limousin heifer calf followed by a British Blue x 2nd calver with a Limousin bull calf at £1320 from E Parker.

Tuesday 15th January The weekly sale of Prime Hoggs had an entry in excess of 1,000 forward selling to a slightly easier trade than the previous week, as seen at other auction markets on the day. Topping the trade this week was JR Capstick of Ingleton achieving £102 for Texels weighing 46kgs or 226p/kg. This was closely followed by Texels from SJ & NS Wood of Windermere selling to £99 for 50kg hoggs. There was plenty of hoggs selling into the nineties. Beltex hoggs sold to 241p/kg and 236p/kg from JG Harryman of Hawkshead with plenty of best conformation hoggs selling around 220p/kg. There was an SQQ average of 200p/kg with an overall market average of 190p/kg. Handy weight Continental hoggs weighing in the late thirties were in very strong demand with the weight range of 32-39kg averaging 207p/kg. Hill bred hoggs saw Mules sell to a top of £84 from DC Miller of Claughton on Brock and Dalesbreds to £82 from R Capstick and Son of Ingleton. Lightweight horned lambs sold towards 190p/kg.

There was, once again, in the region of 700 Cast Ewes forward this week with a busy ringside of buyers ensuring a competitive trade for all types of ewes. Pure Texel ewes sold to a top of £166 for the second week running from W Garnett and Son of Milnthorpe. Plenty of Continental ewes sold around the £100 mark with the consignment from TS & SM Park of Millom selling to £107 and £104. Leicester ewes

All types of horned ewes were a sharper trade today with Swaledales selling to a top of £60 from F & SA Edmondson of Ulverston.
