Dear business partners, employees, and friends, let me introduce to you the historically first catalog of our company LESCUS Cetkovice, s.r.o. Our company obtained it´s first nursery license in 1995, when we started producing spruce plants on an area of about half a hectare. It is unbelievable that in 26 years of our operation we have approximately 120 hectare of productive areas in the Czech Republic and Austria and we set trends in nursery and afforestation technologies. When I evaluate the three key factors to which I owe today’s success, the first factor is certainly the good fortune that accompanies me and LESCUS. The second factor is the team of wonderful, hardworking and thoughtful people who surround me. Thanks to their tenacity and faith in what we do, we have achieved such success. The third factor is the persistence that we had to show, especially in the beginning, when our task was to convince our customers that the technology we were trying to promote was correct. Believe me, in the conservative environment of Czech forestry, it was not, and still is not simple. However, containerized seedlings with air pruning have found the way to their customers and we can follow the same trend throughout Europe. I would like to take this opportunity to thank our customers for their cooperation, because without them, we would not be able to increase our production and invest in the latest technologies. At the same time, I would like to commit to further good and long-term cooperation, because only satisfied customers will continue to work with us. As I like to say to my colleagues: “ Go to customers for praise, come to me for money.” Of course, thanks also go to all our employees for what they do for LESCUS and how they are helping with everyday work to move our company forward. I think this forward momentum is the best reputation and advertisement. Personally, I am very proud of the work they do. Thank you all.

History of LESCUS Cetkovice, s.r.o. From the original association of municipalities LESCUS Uhřice, which managed the forests of the municipalities Cetkovice, Uhřice and Světlá (hence the name LES = forest and C U S), the company LESCUS Cetkovice, s.r.o. was established, and was entered in the Commercial Register of Companies in 1994. As part of the provision of comprehensive forestry services, it was necessary to procure planting material for forest regeneration, and so in 1995 LESCUS began to grow bare-root seedlings for forest trees. During a visit to forest nurseries in Finland, the idea was born to build a specialized forest nursery for containerized seedlings with air pruning in Cetkovice. The vision was soon fulfilled and between 2010 and 2011 a new forest nursery was built in Cetkovice. Over the next three years, the production of containerized seedlings tripled, and during 2016 the company’s operations expanded to Austria and Western Bohemia, where we began operating the Forest nursery Rolský vrch near the village of Nová Role. At the end of 2019, another nursery school in southern Bohemia was added, which is the Forest nursery Žofinka near the village of Nová Ves nad Lužnicí. A significant expansion of the original areas in Cetkovice created the Forest nursery Mišinská, which was opened in 2020. The Forest nursery Nové Zámky in the town of Hostinné in the north of Eastern Bohemia has become our fourth nursery center in the Czech Republic since 2021. In the same year, our headquarters moved to a larger building near the town of Jevíčko.

Company history
History of LESCUS GmbH Forest nurseries operated by LESCUS in Austria have a long history. In 1912, Marius Natlacen joined Stainer in Wiener Neustadt, where he founded his own company Wiener Neustädter Samenhaus Natlacen. It focused on forest seed production, but over time, the business grew to include forestry nurseries. After 1956, when the family business was taken over by his sons Wilhelm and Friedrich Paul Natlacen and the demand for seedlings increased, additional production areas were added in the localities of Krieglach, St. Martin, Großklein, Pilgersdorf and Liebing. In 1977, the company was handed over to another generation and management was taken over by Klaus Natlacen, who expanded production of forest nurseries in Anger. In 2016 Forstbaumschulen NATLACEN GmbH became a subsidiary of LESCUS and was headed by Mrs. Magdalena Leitner. After the optimization of production, the cultivation of seedlings continues in forest nurseries in the localities of Krieglach, Anger, Pilgersdorf and Liebing and since 2020 the company has been called LESCUS GmbH.

The company LESCUS Cetkovice, s.r.o. today Nowadays, LESCUS is a family business providing services to forest owners and managers. Our primary goal is that forest owners receive benefits and profits. In our region, we provide comprehensive services in forestry from afforestation to logging and timber sales. We operate in forest nursery and provide services in growing activities at the national and European level.
Intelligent system for advanced sorting of forest seedlings The basic goal of the project, which took three years to complete, and completed in 2020, was design, production, assembly and commissioning of conventionally usable equipment for automated sorting of tree seedlings. Tomas Bata University in Zlín - Faculty of Applied Informatics, LESCUS Cetkovice, s.r.o. and DENESA s.r.o.have successfully completed this project together and a new facility is already in full use, i.e. the automatic sorting of containerized seedlings at LESCUS.
Planting trees for Světluška (Fire fly) In 2019, we started to organize a two-day event focused on planting new forests together with students and the general public. With the slogan “SUPPORT THE RIGHT BEETLE” we started to plant new forests with volunteers in areas destroyed by BARK BEETLE. For each planted plant, our company provides a financial gift to Světluška (FIRE FLY), which is a project of the Český Rozhlas Endowment Fund, which helps the severely visually impaired. The date of this event is always planned between October 10, the World Day of sight and October 20, Tree Day in the Czech Republic.
Světluška Fund Gabriela Drastichová, director of the Czech Radio Světluška Endowment Fund: “I like it when people, their activities and the results of their work combine and complement each other. Planting plants for Světluška is an example of how two unrelated beneficial activities can be combined, helping the forests we love and helping the visually impaired, both of which need our support. LESCUS has transformed the energy of volunteers who planted seedlings into funds that we can use to support visually disabled children, adults and the seniors. Thank you, and we are already looking forward to the next Planting for Světluška.“
Czech radio station Radiožurnál We have also answered questions from Lucie Výborná about forests in the Czech Republic, about our activities, company, and about planting trees for Světluška on Czech radio station Radiožurnál.

Forest nursery Mišinská – Cetkovice The first seedlings produced by LESCUS were grown in the forest nursery in Cetkovice. Paradoxically, this forest nursery has the shortest history, it started in 1995. For the first fifteen years, only bare-root plants were grown on production areas east of the village of Cetkovice, and then, a specialized nursery operation for the cultivation of bare-root seedlings was developed here. Due to the fact that this forest nursery was established only recently and the world’s top technologies were used in its construction, this has resulted in being one of the most modern nursery facilities in Europe. In the production areas, which are located close the village Cetkovice, we grow mainly containerized seedlings and a lesser quantity of bare-root seedlings. However, other areas producing bare-root seedlings are located close the villages Bělá u Jevíčka and Horní Štěpánov. Although the growing areas are not too far apart, their altitude is from 420 to 645 MAMSL and the different geological conditions of Boskovická brázda (furrows) and the Drahanská vrchovina (highlands) provide different climates for growing individual tree species.

LESCUS forest nurseries
Forest nursery Rolský vrch – Nová Role The forest nursery near Nová Role was founded in the 1970s by West Bohemian state forests, primarily with the aim of producing bare-root spruce for the renewal of air pollution stands in the Krušné hory (Ore Mountains). After the transformation of the state-owned enterprise, three joint-stock companies took over the ownership of this establishment, and in response to changing demand, began growing fir and beech trees in the nursery. Due to a declining volume of orders, the total production of seedlings also decreased. Therefore, all investments in the operation stopped and in 2015 the owner decided to close the entire forest nursery. The following year, the forest nursery became the property of LESCUS Cetkovice, s.r.o. and the modernization of the entire operation began. Investment was directed mainly at technologies for growing containerized seedlings, the production of which has become dominant in this nursery. The Forest nursery Rolský vrch can be found on the southern edge of the Ore Mountains at an altitude of 470 MAMSL, and although local conditions are mostly suitable for fir and beech, we also manage to produce other types of woody plants such as Douglas fir, maple, oak, etc.
Forest nursery Žofinka – Nová Ves nad Lužnicí This forest nursery was built in 1976 by South Bohemian Forests. Since the 1990s, this operation has been gradually owned by two joint-stock companies and the name has been changed to Forest nursery Dvory nad Lužnicí. At the end of 2019, LESCUS became the owner. Upon taking over the forest nursery, we found a drawing with the infrastructure of the ŽOFINKA nursery, which was designed by the Technical Office of the South Bohemian State Forests when it was established. Since 2013, the nearby national nature reserve bears the same name, so we returned to the original name of the Forest nursery Žofinka. The Forest nursery Žofinka is located in the Třeboň Basin between the villages of Nová Ves nad Lužnicí and Dvory nad Lužnicí and other growing areas are near the village of Horní Stropnice on the edge of the Novohradské Mountains. The altitude of these two locations is 460 and 620 MAMSL, and therefore we use them to grow different tree species. Excellent soil conditions allow the use of modern machinery and equipment in the cultivation of seedlings, and therefore this technology is dominant here. The modernization of the nursery also increased the production of containerized seedlings of forest tree species, including large sized plants which also covers the needs of our subsidiary company in Austria.

Forest nursery Nové Zámky – Hostinné This forest nursery was founded in the early 1980s by East Bohemian State Forests. The state enterprise operated here even after its transformation and administration by the Czech Republic Forest Association until 1997. Subsequently, the forest nursery was operated by three joint-stock companies and since mid-2021 has been owned by LESCUS. The Forest nursery Nové Zámky is located in the southern part of Hostinné in the Nové Zámky locality near the village of Dolní Olešnice. We grow forest containerized seedlings and bare-root seedlings in this forest nursery in areas that lie next to the Elbe River at an altitude of 340 MAMSL.
Forest nurseries LESCUS GmbH The operation of our forest nurseries in Austria is provided by the subsidiary LESCUS GmbH, which has continued the long-term operation of Forstbaumschule Natlacen. The Anger nursery has been growing seedlings for more than forty years, and the Pilgesrsdorf, Liebing and Krieglach nurseries have a sixty-year history. In these nurseries we produce bare-root seedlings, especially for the Austrian market.
Forest nursery Pilgersdorf and Liebing Both of these forest nurseries are in the federal state of Burgenland, in the eastern part of Austria near the villages of the same name. The Forest nursery Pilgersdorf is located at an altitude of 370 MAMSL by the Zöbernbach River. This is the largest complex of growing area of our subsidiary and the local conditions suit all forest plants that we produce in Austria. That is why we grow in this forest nursery the most types of seedlings – forest trees, shrubs for landscaping and for planting hedges, fast-growing woody plants (especially poplars) for energy plantations, but also seedlings for Christmas tree plantations. The Forest nursery Liebing is located by the Güns River, which forms the border with Hungary. The altitude here is 310 MAMSL and this is our lowest forest nursery. We use these areas mainly for growing pines and some larch.
14
LESCUS forest nurseries
Forest nursery Anger and Krieglach We have these forest nurseries in the federal state of Styria, which is already more mountainous and the local climate corresponds to that. The Forest nursery Anger is located in the foothills at an altitude of 500 MAMSL by the river Feistritz. The conditions are especially suitable for growing spruce, but we also use these areas for the production of larch and Caucasian fir. This is both to cover local demand and the distribution of the Spring expedition, which begins here later. Our highest center is the Forest nursery Krieglach, which has five growing areas in the range of 680 to 710 MAMSL. Here we grow only Norwegian spruce, mainly for reforestation in higher altitudes.
Dispatch, handling, and transport of seedlings The basis of our business strategy is to produce and supply quality seedlings, including planting, and the subsequent care of the planted cultures. We have the entire process, from picking at the production area in the forest nursery to planting in the forest, under our control. The process of picking, sorting and packing plants is automated as much as possible.
16
Logistics
Machine sorting brings higher efficiency, which is also an advantage for our customers. The sorting process takes a short time and is carried out in suitable climatic conditions for the seedlings. Thanks to optical sorting and machine counting human error is eliminated in shipping and unifies the quality of the shipped planting stock. During the storage and shipping containerized seedlings are enclosed in bags to protect the planting stock from moisture loss and surface drying root balls.
We use pallet boxes for storage and transport, which protect the planting material from mechanical damage and minimize the reloading of individual bags. This also significantly shortens the overall handling time.
FOREST CULTIVATION
We offer comprehensive services for forest regeneration We offer forest owners and managers a full service in forest regeneration and afforestation, including subsequent care of planted crops. As part of our services, we perform pruning and cleaning or full-area site preparation by mulching residues before planting. We use our own transport and ensure storage of the seedlings. We carry out planting according to the conditions of the given locations and the wishes of customers, but we prefer the use of motomanual soil augers. It is also possible to use special planters or planting in holes using axe hoes.

Our services
The town Velké Opatovice manages approximately 150 ha of forest. In recent years, an infestation in spruce stands by the engraver beetles, has culminated in our country, and there has been a large increase in mining and subsequent afforestation. The company LESCUS Cetkovice, s.r.o. is a local company that offers all services in forestry in our region and produces a sufficient range of quality seedlings for afforestation in its forest nurseries. We have been cooperating with this company for several years. The quality of work and the supplied planting material is at a very high level. Ing. Kateřina Gerbrichová Mayor
Vojenské lesy a statky ČR, s.p. (Military Forests and Estates of the Czech Republic, SOE) manages two large forest localities in Moravia in the Libavá and Březina military districts. During the tropical years 2015-2018, both were hit hard by a large-scale and devastating calamity, which effectively destroyed adult spruce stands in these areas. The military forests responded to the largest afforestation event in its ninety-year history, during which the destroyed forests were restored, over a five year period, with new species-diverse stands that are now growing successfully. Extensive and rapid recovery would be unthinkable without professional partners. LESCUS Cetkovice, s.r.o, carried out a comprehensive area preparation on a large part of the destroyed areas, followed by the restoration of seedlings from our own resources, the quality of which has proven itself here. In short, LESCUS was one of our strategic partners in the battle for the future of the forests in the Oderské Vrchy and Drahanská Vrchovina. Ing. Petr Král Director of Military Forests and Estates of the Czech Republic, SOE
Lesy České republiky, s.p. (Czech Republic Forests, SOE) is the largest forest manager in the Czech Republic. The recent engraver beetle calamity, which affected the whole of Central Europe, also significantly affected the state-owned enterprise. With the increasing extraction of wood in recent years, the area of clearings has also increased, on which it is necessary to restore the forest and subsequently ensure adequate care for the planted crops. Based on the results of public contracts, the state-owned company has been cooperating with LESCUS Cetkovice, s.r.o. for a long time in various contracted territorial units almost throughout the Czech Republic. LESCUS is thus an important and stable partner of Czech Republic Forests s.p. in the field of cultivation of forest tree planting materials and cultivation works. Ing. Josef Vojáček Czech Repubic Forests, SOE CEO
Arcibiskupské lesy a statky Olomouc s.r.o. (Archbishop’s Forests and Estates Olomouc LLC) manages assets of more than 42,000 hectares. Our problems with bark beetles and drought, which locally caused the decay of forest stands could not be avoided. Due to the recurring unfavorable climatic conditions in the Spring and Autumn, there is a demand on our part to use a larger proportion of angiosperm seedlings in afforestation. The company LESCUS Cetkovice, s.r.o. is an important long-term business partner, who supplies us with this planting material and at the same time carries out part of the cultivation work. Ing. Arnošt Buček Archbishop’s Forests and Estates Olomouc Executive Director

Our services
Contract cultivation We offer cultivation of seedlings “tailor-made”. We can prepare planting material from your seeds according to pre-agreed criteria. According to the required delivery date and seedlings parameters, we will jointly select a suitable cultivation technology, choose the appropriate size of the planter and plan the entire cultivation process. You have the appropriate planting material from your own genetic resources in advance, which returns directly to your forests.
BARE-ROOT SEEDLINGS
LESCUS still grows a large number of bare-root seedlings, but the share of this technology in total production is declining every year at the expense of containerized seedlings. The reason is the fact that the use of containerized seedlings brings a lot of indisputable advantages and its application in afforestation is still growing.
We produce bare-root seedlings in seed beds with substrates or in mineral soil, where we use the so-called five-line technology. The seed is sown directly into the ground in five paths and the root germ system is later modified by so-called undercut - mechanical treatment of the root in the soil without picking up the plants. The same applies to nursery (transplanting) plants, where we again grow plants in five rows. This allows us to use special mechanization for growing bare-root seedlings. In the spring and autumn seasons, seedlings are collected from fields without soil and this is why they have bare roots and require much greater care in handling, transporting, storage and planting. The time suitable for planting bare-root seedlings is shorter than containerized seedlings, because the plants must be planted during expedition in the so-called dormancy. These seedlings are planted from mid-October till first frost and then in the spring months (especially March and April). However, plants in the forest nursery must be collected on time and stored in optimal conditions, to avoid germination. This technology requires a longer growing time in the nursery, it doesn’t demand specialized nursery equipment but it takes longer and it cannot be done without a large proportion of human labor.
24
Our production
With the exception of pine and Douglas fir, we use this technology to grow commonly used tree species for forest regeneration and afforestation, such as spruce, larch, fir, beech, oak, maple, linden, cherry, alder, elm, etc.

CONTAINERIZED SEEDLINGS WITH AIR PRUNING
The dominant share in our production consists of containerized seedlings, which are grown by the air pruning method. It sounds complicated, but the principle is simple. It is an intensive technology of growing in special growing containers (trays) of various sizes and shapes that have laboratory accreditation for growing the tree species. The growing containers are filled with a suitable substrate where the seed or a small seedling are sown inside. These trays have an open bottom and they are placed on silvicultural-handling frames throughout the growing season. Then the roots grow from the container, where they dry naturally in the air, creating a compact root ball with rich root hair without defects and deformities.
Containerized seedlings have a number of biological and operational-technological advantages. Particularly, only a minor shock after planting and the possibility of a much longer period for afforestation. Plantings can be done from September to June (except when the soil is frozen.) Another advantage is the shorter growing time in the nursery, which makes it possible to respond more flexibly to the needs of forest owners and managers.
26
Our production
It is often said containerized seedlings have root deformations, but by following the right cultivation practices and planting methods, deformations are eliminated and the shape of the root system is maintained as it has grown naturally. The statement about higher price of containerized seedlings is not really true. The purchase price of containerized seedlings is higher than bare-root seedlings, but the overall economy of forest regeneration must be taken into account in the culture provided. In the case of the use of the containerized seedlings, losses after planting decrease and the time required for crop care is shortened. In this case, the use of planting containerized seedlings plants is definitely economically favorable.
On the following pages in this catalog, there are types of seedlings and tree species that we commonly grow in our nurseries. In the description there are parameters of the seedlings, and the planting code material is also given. By the numbers in the code there are specified exact criteria that the seedlings should meet.

Next to seedlings there is also information about the type of trays used. For quick orientation it is only necessary to know that LESCUS grows seedlings in square containers and plants in round containers. What is the difference between a seedling and plant? Seedlings become plants after root system treatment by undercutting or transplanting bare-root seedlings or by transplanting into trays of containerized seedlings. The requirements for the parameters of common commercial quality plants are also different.
