Cable Organizer

cable organizer that consists of two attachable parts with aesthetic, but simple and injection-moulding-ready shape is designed to fulďŹ l people’s needs: organizing overlong cables on the desktop, storing wires, and protecting cords from accidental damages.

How do you describing your typical usage of electronic products, and how many cables are you bringing out a typical day?

A

I am a heavy user in terms of electronic devices. For average, I am bringing four cables every day: for my phone, for my pad, earphone, and for my laptop.

Are they annoying in terms of self-entangling?

A

Partially yes. My earphone often entangled with itself which is really frustrating. But my charging wires are fine cause those are thicker and stiffer.

Have you ever suffered from annoying wires on your table?

A

Of course, and I bought many organizers. I also have organizers in my bag.

Could you descript the best cable organizer you ever thought about?

A

A decent one must have aesthetic value while being easy to use. It could be even better to have various functions.

Ideation Inspirations The overall shape was developed based on hamburgers: two pieces of coating cover the thing that matters.

A kind of waving shape was ďŹ rstly inspired by the fried egg. Then, trigonometrical curvature was applied to the basic hamburger axially considering functionality and ergonomics.

A yo-yo ball utilizing the inner curve to guide the wire. A cable organizer could also be like that.

It is observed that valves existed in blood vessels to prevent blood owing oppositely. A similar mechanism could be applied to avoid most intentional removal of stored wire.

Scenario of Use Step 1

Slip wires into the void through two pieces of rubber ring and secured it inside the organizer. The middle hole is slightly larger than the index finger average size for better holding experience.

Step 2

The middle hole also provides a place to accommodate the wire ends. The surface gaps (three on each face) offer spaces accommodating cables.

Step 3

Directly open it to take the cable out. There is no need for reverse operation.

Manufacturing

Considering product shape, manufacturability, material, batch size, labour and time cost, injection moulding is selected as the major manufacturing process. Optimizations for injection moulding are applied to the CAD model including draft angles and parting lines arrangement.

The positive and the negative draft are demonstrated in green and red respectively as shown in the draft angle analysis, which means this shape is ready to be manufactured.

Final model

Model making 1. Radially interlocked sturcture was

designed and refined using Autodesk Fusion and Slicer for Fusion 360 before export for cutting profile.

2. Plywood with 1.5 mm thickness was

laser-cutted.

3. Lastly, slices are assembled following

the designed manner.

After ranking the result by Eco-indicator 99 value, natural rubber is the top candidate.

Natural Rubber However, a significant issue is revealed with the progressing of more in-depth research: natural rubber products may trigger latex allergy which is surely undesired.

Allergy The silicone elastomer, next candidate from eco-indicator 99 values ranking, is finally chosen, as it has appropriate properties while being eco-friendly.

Injection moulding (thermosets) is picked for the production considering the good compatibility between moulding and polymers, a low labour density required, as well as an economic batch size of 1e4 to 1e6 units which is suit for this eco-friendly toy.
