Local Flavor Did you know that there are more than 7,800 farmers markets operating throughout the United States? The Metro DC area has many diverse and thriving markets. By using the USDA farmers market search engine, (http:// search.ams.usda.gov/farmersmarkets) I found eight of them in my neighborhood alone. Many markets are branching out to sell other items in addition to just fresh fruits and produce. At the Del Ray Farmer’s market in Alexandria vendors also sell honey, cheeses, cut flowers, eggs, nuts, pastries, and even dog treats! Every Saturday (year-round) from 8AM-noon on the corner of Mt. Vernon Avenue and East Oxford, you can satisfy your craving for something fresh! ABOVE: We found these delicious (dog-tested!) treats at the Del Ray market. Home-made by local vendor Barkley Square, they use natural ingredients to make all the treats, including their number one seller, bacon and cheddar bones as well as chicken bites, pizza fish, peanut butter bites, and pupcakes.
NOVADog special: stop at Barkley’s booth at the Del Ray Farmers Market—Buy $5 worth of treats get 1 treat free. OR buy 3 small treats for $1.
