2 Corinthians 11 GOD'S WORD® Translation
Apostle Paul Gives Heads-Up That A Portion Of This Letter Is To Make A Point Using His Life As An Example Of What Not To Focus On Because It Is Foolish 1 I want you to put up with a little foolishness from me. I'm sure that you will. [Paul picks up this point in vs 5 through rest of the chapter. Paul already assumes they will listen to foolishness because later in the chapter he discusses how they hear foolishness already in false apostles or teachers.]
Do Not Put Up With False Teachings, False Gospels, False Jesus’, False Spirits 2 I'm as protective of you as God is. After all, you're a virgin whom I promised in marriage to one man-Christ. 3However, I'm afraid 1. that as the snake deceived Eve by its tricks, a. so your minds may somehow be lured away from your sincere and pure devotion to Christ. 2. 4When someone comes to you telling about another Jesus whom we didn't tell you about, a. you're willing to put up with it. 3. When you receive a spirit that is different from the Spirit you received earlier, a. you're also willing to put up with that. 4. When someone tells you good news that is different from the Good News y ou already accepted, a. you're willing to put up with that too.
Apostle Paul Is Comparing Himself A True Apostle To The Model Of The False Apostles In This Way They Will See The Counterfeit Apostle Paul Fact 1: 5I don't think I'm inferior in any way to your super-apostles [unknown by us but these are the false apostles that preach false gospel.]. 6Even though I'm not good with words, I know what I'm talking about. Timothy and I have made this clear to you in every possible way. Question 1: 7Did I commit a sin when I humbled myself by telling you the Good News o f God free of charge so that you could become important? [No he did not commit sin by spreading the truth of the Good News to others in Corinth for free.] Apostle Paul Fact 2: 8 I robbed other churches by taking pay from them to serve you. [Apostle Paul is using strong words here and is referring to his donations he accepted from the other churches to support his journey to continue to spread the Gospel Truth] Apostle Paul Fact 3: 9When I was with you and needed something, I didn't bother any of you for help. My friends from the province of Macedonia supplied everything I needed. I kept myself from being a financial burden to you in any way, and I will continue to do that. [Being this church is just starting out, the Apostle Paul does not want to burden them or be a weight on their progress, he is respecting their infant growth.] Question 2: 10As surely as I have Christ's truth, my bragging will not be silenced anywhere in Greece. 11Why? [apparently Apostle Paul is receiving feedback that he doesn’t love this church. Because I don't love you? Answer 2: God knows that I do love you. Apostle Paul Solution: 12But I'll go on doing what I'm doing. This will take away the opportunity of those people who want to brag because they think they're like us. [referring to the opening statement of the chapter and vs 10, Apostle Paul will do what he has to do to silence the counterfeits, and that may include bragging about what the real Apostles do compared to the fake ones. Again this is acting foolish as Paul stated but he is saying he needs the Corinthian Church to recognize fake Apostles. When you know what the real one acts like and speaks about, then you can easily spot a fake one.] Apostle Paul Fact 4: 13People who brag like this are false apostles. They are dishonest workers, since they disguise themselves as Christ's apostles. 14And no wonder, even Satan disguises himself as an angel of light. 15So it's not surprising if his servants also disguise themselves as servants who have God's approval. 5. In the end they will get what they deserve. 1. 2. 3. 4.
Apostle Paul Does Not Like That He Had To Resort To Bragging To Prove A Point 16Again I say that 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. 6.
no one should think that I'm a fool. But if you do, then take me for a fool so that I can also brag a little. [meaning only fools brag] 17What I say as I start bragging is foolishness. It's not something I would say if I were speaking for the Lord. 18Since it's common for people to brag, I'll do it too. 19You're wise, so you'll gladly put up with fools. [meaning the opposite if you are wise you would not be putting up with those fools.]
[Apostle Paul is writing to tell them I can stoop to a lower level like these other false apostles but I choose not to do that. when speaking for the Lord we can brag about nothing, it is only by grace that we are saved.]
Apostle Paul Is Saying The Corinthians Are Becoming A Doormat For False Gospels 20When someone makes you 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. 6.
slaves, consumes your wealth, seizes your property, orders you around, or slaps your faces, you put up with it.
21I'm ashamed to admit it, but Timothy and I don't have the strength to do those things to you. [apparently the church was being taken advantage of by these false teachers]
The Apostle Paul Is About To Brag And At An Extremely High Level To Prove His Point Whatever other people dare to brag about, I, like a fool, can also brag about. 1. 22Are they Hebrews? a. So am I. 2. Are they Israelites? a. So am I. 3. Are they Abraham's descendants? a. So am I. 4. 23Are they Christ's servants? a. It's insane to say it, but I'm a far better one. I've done much more work, 5. been in prison many more times, 6. been beaten more severely, 7. and have faced death more often. 8. 24Five times the Jewish leaders had me beaten with 39 lashes; 9. 25three times Roman officials had me beaten with clubs. 10. Once people tried to stone me to death; 11. three times I was shipwrecked, 12. and I drifted on the sea for a night and a day. 13. 26Because I've traveled a lot, I've faced dangers from raging rivers, 14. from robbers, 15. from my own people, 16. and from other people. 17. I've faced dangers in the city, 18. in the open country, 19. on the sea, 20. and from believers who turned out to be false friends. 21. 27Because I've had to work so hard, I've often gone without sleep, 22. been hungry and thirsty, 23. and gone without food 24. and without proper clothes during cold weather. 25. 28Besides these external matters, I have the daily pressure of my anxiety about all the churches. 26. 29When anyone is weak, I'm weak too. 27. When anyone is caught in a trap, I'm also harmed.
Brag About Things That Show How Weak You Are 30If I must brag, I will brag about the things that show how weak I am. 31The God and Father of the Lord Jesus, who is praised forever, knows that I'm not lying. 32The governor under King Aretas put guards around the city of Damascus to catch me. 33So I was let down in a basket through an opening in the wall and escaped from him. [Apostle Paul is sharing how weak he was in this moment to escaping guards instead of facing them.]
