THE BEST OF THE BEST
If you have lived in Marin over the past 18 years, you might have noticed a variety of window stickers proudly declaring that the business you are about to walk into has been deemed worthy by a Marin Magazine ’s Best of the County window cling or certificate. Notably, the Pacific Sun and the Marin Independent Journal are also in the game, and hats off to these publications for maintaining consistent branding. Back in 2008 when we first launched our "best ofs" lists, we could have definitely used a marketing mind to create one recognizable Marin Magazine logo. No regrets, we’ve had some fun designs over the years, and perhaps our brand strategy is keeping readers guessing about what’s happening next.
Through it all, I really do prefer our latest iteration of "Best of the County." In the past, the edit team would select a few businesses to highlight, but as humans with limitations, we would miss some great options. Hence, a few years back we compiled a list we felt good about and opened up the decisions to our readers. The result?
A robust list of 104 categories that you’ll see in this issue (and more importantly online), with more than 820 small local businesses representing the "Best of Marin" in categories: Arts and Entertainment, Beauty, Dining, Fitness, Home & Design, Philanthropy, Services and Shopping. To make it onto these prestigious lists, a business must receive at least 10 votes. And to stay on this list, a business needs to get at least 10 votes, and the businesses with the most votes are deemed "Readers’ Choice." In many cases, readers' votes were very close and the runners up, “Rest of the Best” list is lengthy.
Shifting gears, we are proud to share Yalda Moaiery’s inspiring photo essay which sheds a light on Iranian women who have been imprisoned for their support of the Women, Life, Freedom movement in Iran. Her images were on display last month at the Sausalito Center for the Arts. The story came to us through Marin native and
Marin Academy graduate, Jason Rezaian who is a good friend of Yalda's, and has written an intro to the photo essay. We’ll be hearing more about Jason’s experience of being convicted of espionage in a closed-door trial in Iran in 2015. Spoiler alert: He’s now back in the U.S., and working at the Washington Post. We look forward to sharing his courageous story soon.
Back in the bubble of Marin County, we celebrate the return of Sausalito’s beloved Sea Lion Statue. I showed up at 6:30 a.m. on July 3rd just as the statue was being replaced. It was a banner Sausalito morning with a crowd of locals there to celebrate, including former Sausalito mayor Melissa Blaustien bobbing in the bay for the occasion, which is appropriate, considering she raised $10,000 last year by swimming from Angel Island to Sausalito to contribute towards the repairs.
Heads up on naming the sea lion, I mistakenly referred to the statue as Sammy and was kindly corrected by current Sausalito mayor, Ian Sobieski, who let me know that people get upset if it's called Sammy or referred to as a seal instead of a sea lion. This hubbub to me indicates that we should just come up with a name, something like the adored Li'l Sebastian on the television show, Parks and Recreation. You can read a bit more about the newest statue addition to Sausalito on the page 26.
Back to "Best of the County," if we have missed your favorite business, don’t worry — we will be voting again next year. Don’t hesitate to let us know. As always we love feedback, please send your thoughts to editorial@marin magazine.com or find us on the socials.

One More Olympian
I saw your article on Marin athletes in the Olympics past and present. Aki Epenisa is another Marin County athlete you can include on your list. She was raised in Marin from the age of eight years old, attended local Marin schools and will be representing her birth country of Tonga on the boxing team in Paris this year.

Bright Future
In July’s Marin Magazine, I read with interest Jim Wood’s intriguing article about wealthy tech-types creating a city of at least 50,000 near Marin County (“Will a City Grow in Solano County?”). I also read in the Editor’s Letter that Wood is only 88 years old. That man has a bright future in journalism.

Offnded
I'm offended by this quote from Laura McMahon (they/them; Exec. Director of LAOM), on “Homelessness in Marin” in your April issue: "Owning property is an ideal, but most people don't. To own property, you have to accumulate wealth. And in order to accumulate wealth you have to have privilege." For all of us who don't come from "privilege," in order to own (or rent) property, and to accumulate wealth, you have to get educated (self or formally), secure a job and save some money. It's that simple. One man's opinion.

— Lloyd Wiborg, San Rafael
In a recent Marin Magazine issue (July Looking Back), Lane Dooling was incorrectly identified as "formally with the Marin History Museum." She has been with the museum for more than five years and is still there.

Dog-Friendly Beaches
Top Dog-Friendly Beaches in Marin
EDITED BY STEPHANIE MARTIN
RODEO BEACH, MARIN HEADLANDS
Three miles west of the Golden Gate Bridge, this dark pebble beach is at the western-most edge of the Marin Headlands. It’s a popular dog-friendly spot where canines are welcome either on a leash or under voice control.
DILLON BEACH, WEST MARIN
Because this is a private beach, dogs are allowed to be off leash (as long as they behave). There is a fee to park in the lot.
LIMANTOUR BEACH, POINT REYES
While there are a few well-marked areas that don’t allow dogs, this is a huge, beautiful white sand beach any dog will love.
UPTON BEACH, STINSON
Dogs are allowed in the picnic area by Eskoot Creek and north. Look for signs to keep you on track.
MUIR BEACH
If you are setting up for a full day on the sand, you will love this beach’s close-by parking. The crescent-shaped cove features a lagoon and sandy beach. The waves are good for bodyboarders and kayakers (watch for strong currents), and fish are plentiful.
Sausalito’s Sea Lion Statue is baaaack.
Thank you to the Sausalito Foundation, the city’s councilmembers, maritime businesses, including Reason Bradley of Universal Sonar Mount, and countless others who worked hard for the past year and a half to ensure the 1,900-pound bronze sculpture was replaced (albeit on a more secure, weatherproof and twelve-inchestaller platform). To celebrate the occasion, the salty Sausalito community showed up at 6 a.m. on July 3, when the tides were low enough to access the platform. During its time on land, this beloved statue appeared in parades as the city waited out permitting red tape. It’s one of the town’s most recognizable landmarks. The original concrete sculpture was created by artist Al Sybrian and recast in bronze in the mid-1960s. Get out there and get your selfie!

AUTHOR TALK
BY JESSETTE LONG
Robert Holmes, an award-winning travel photographer, has been honored four times as the "Travel Photographer of the Year," by the Society of American Travel Writers. He has illustrated over 40 books and collaborated with major magazines, including National Geographic, Life and Time. For over 30 years, he has been the Photography Chairman at the Book Passage Travel Writers & Photographers Conference taking place this month.
Q&A
Your upcoming book, PASSAGES, includes writing alongside the photos. What inspired you to share these stories?
As we were putting the book together, the captions became so extended that the book morphed into a memoir. My daughters Emma and Hannah have always asked me to talk about my life as a photographer and adventurer so this is essentially for them.
The switch from photographer to wordsmith must have presented some unforeseen obstacles. What surprised you most about writing the text for this book?
This is the sixth book I’ve written but the first to be completely personal. The problem with any memoir is memory. I have documented all my travels as a photographer, and have a visual notebook of every journey I have made over the past 50 years. This has proven to be invaluable.
What advice would you give to photographers who want to develop writing skills to complement their visual storytelling?
If you want to write well, in my opinion there is no better training than to be a voracious reader. Starting is always the hardest part, just do it, and don’t procrastinate.
What’s something people can expect to learn from you at this year’s Book Passage Travel Writers & Photographers Conference?
My aim at the Conference is always to give inspiration. I hope I can teach people to see more clearly and creatively, but more than that, I want participants to leave being excited about the potential of the medium.

Tennessee Valley Trail, TENNESSEE VALLEY
Level: Easy — 3.4 miles
This popular 3.4-mile out-and-back hike brings you through a lovely valley in the Marin Headlands to a small cove flanked by massive coastal cliffs. From the large, free parking area you follow a paved and dirt road on a slightly rolling route to picnic-perfect Tennessee Cove. Be sure to ascend the short but steep trail near the beach to an overlook for stellar ocean and city views. The route is mostly exposed (no shade) but is frequently overcast and foggy. In late spring and early summer, native wildflowers decorate the route and deer and red-tailed hawks are commonly seen.
Kirby Cove, SAUSALITO
Level: Moderate — 3 miles
Start this scenic walk at Sausalito’s Fort Baker, where there’s ample free parking near the Discovery Museum. Just past the fishing pier on Horseshoe Cove, ascend a car-free paved road, pass under the Golden Gate Bridge, then take a short connecting trail from the northwest parking area to Conzelman Road. Follow the trail on the road’s shoulder a short distance to Battery Spencer (a historic seacoast defense site) and world-famous views of the bridge from the Marin side. A dirt fire road descends from Battery Spencer for about a mile to Kirby Cove, with its breathtaking views of the city and the bridge. Picnic on the beach before returning the way you came for a remarkable four-mile walking adventure on the Golden Gate coast.
Marshall Beach Trail, SAN FRANCISCO
Level: Moderate — 2.4 miles
This secluded, scenic beach near the base of the Golden Gate Bridge (on the San Francisco side) is one of the city’s greatest coastal secrets. At low tide, it’s perfect for picnicking, photography, birdwatching and beach-strolling. Park in a large dirt parking lot near the trailhead to Batteries to Bluff trail and make a steep descent to Marshall’s Beach. You might see migrating gray whales
in winter and humpbacks in summer, and seabirds abound yearround on this rugged coast. Return via the parking area by following the trail to the south of the beach to complete a two-mile loop.
Stinson Beach Trail, STINSON BEACH
Level: Easy — 4 miles
A Bay Area favorite, Marin County’s Stinson Beach invites meditative strolls along the ocean shoreline. You can park in the large, free state parking lots and take off on a four-mile roundtrip walk along the water’s edge, taking in views of the wide and wild Pacific Ocean and verdant Bolinas Ridge rising steeply up the slopes of Mount Tamalpais. To the south you can see views of San Francisco and the community of Bolinas to the northwest.
Coyote Ridge Trail to Muir Beach, TENNESSEE
VALLEY Level: Moderate — 5.2 miles
You know how they say it’s not about the destination, but the journey? Well, step aside clichés because this trail gives you both a journey AND a destination. How does walking under the shade of eucalyptus trees sound? A picnic at Muir Beach without the chore of parking in its infamously small lot? Did we mention coastal views on 80 percent of the trail? C’mon, tell us that’s not the perfect weekend hike. To be transparent, there is a slight caveat, if you’re not feeling a good glute workout. The hike back from Muir Beach to the trailhead is a good 1,300 feet up — everyone feels it a little — but set your own pace and you’ll ride the high of this trail’s crazy beautiful view. Go for a picnic, catch some rays and mosey on back for a well-deserved beer in Tam Junction.

Inn Above the Tide, Sausalito: This bayside lodge boasts binoculars in every room and balconies that jut directly over the water. Sit on your glass-enclosed balcony and watch the city lights twinkle on, outlining the iconic skyline. innabovetide.com
Nick’s Cove, Marshall: For over 80 years, Yugoslavian immigrant Nick Kojich started by offering crab and shrimp cocktails to passing motorists in the Tomales Bay hamlet of Marshall. Dillon Beach Resort
Natalie, who grew up in Larkspur, loves to bake for others and drink lots of coffee, and when her friends visit, she always starts any outing with a large cup of Philz Coffee.
Sporty: Take the ferry from Larkspur directly to Oracle Park to watch a Giants game. A night game in the summer is my favorite!
Cultural: Visit Fairfax for some thrifting and vintage shopping. Stop at The Co ee Roastery for ca eine and live music. It’s a great way to enjoy the cultural uniqueness of this Marin town.
Cool History: Drive to China Camp, grab a delicious picnic dinner at Sol Food and maybe get some boba tea from Sharetea on the way! While the sun is still up, walk down to China Camp Beach and learn about the rich history. Then, picnic at one of the many stops along the windy road, and after eating explore some of the trails to catch the perfect view as the sun sets behind the mountains.
Lunch: Grab the Chinese chicken salad and chicken okason from Comforts in San Anselmo, and then nd a spot at a park downtown for a picnic.
Word from The Youth!
We’ve asked our well-traveled interns where they like to bring their visitors; we hope you’ll get some good ideas.
Ellyse, a San Carlos native, loves to swim, hike and attend sports games. When her friends visit, she always takes them on an adventure along the Pacific Coast and to San Francisco.
Sporty: A great way to spend the day is by taking the train from the San Carlos station to the San Francisco King Street station and catching either the Warriors or Giants game! If we have time, we can take an earlier train and even stop for outdoor mini-golf on the way to the stadium.
Cultural: We could spend the day at Filoli Gardens enjoying a picnic on one of the beautiful lawns. For a unique experience, we might sign up for one of their yoga classes, where there are peacocks and other birds that roam freely as you meditate by one of the pools.
Cool History: Explore Devil’s Slide in Paci ca and hike up to the Devil’s Slide Bunker along the coastline, taking in the great views of the trail and the Paci c Ocean.
Lunch: As we drive south on Highway One from Paci ca to Half Moon Bay, we can have lunch in downtown at It’s Italia for some great Italian food. Buon appetito!
Isabella, who grew up in Ross, loves to run, swim and bake. When her friends visit:
Sporty: We like to hike Phoenix Lake and loop around the water, admiring Baldy and Tam towering above us from the trail.
Cultural: If their visit overlaps with a weekend, I will bring them to the Sunday Farmer’s Market and then walk them through our amazing Civic Center designed by Frank Lloyd Wright.
Cool History: For a longer adventure, I’d take them to the Point Reyes lighthouse and walk down to where you’re surrounded by the ocean — a historic and uniquely Californian vantage point.
Lunch: Head to Marin Country Mart to do some shopping and look out over the water. Pick up lunch at Rustic Bakery, and eat under the sun and umbrellas by the pond!
Gate Park or SFMOMA.
Cool History: Stroll through Haight-Ashbury and pass the Grateful Dead house.
Lunch: Take the ferry to downtown Tiburon and enjoy lunch at Sam’s Anchor Cafe.
Tucker, who grew up in San Rafael, loves to run, write and talk about sports. When his friends visit:
Sporty: Take his golden retriever George to Cavallo Point where he can run and attempt to play fetch, usually unsuccessfully.
Cultural: A trip to the Silver Peso bar, which has a rich history dating back to the early 1900s, for a beverage or two, responsibly of course.
Cool History: Walk around the Headlands bunker complex and nish up at Point Bonita lighthouse if it’s open.
Lunch: Michael’s Sourdough Sandwiches of San Rafael, order a No. 8 (The Salami), grab an ice cold soda and a cookie.
Sporty: We’ll pile in the car and head over the Golden Gate Bridge (while walking through Golden Gate Park is lovely, we’re shedding our pu ers and getting out of the city) to the Oakwood Valley Trail in Tam Valley. Alternatively, if we’re seeking some shade, the Cascade Drive neighborhood in Mill Valley has a perfect little semi-paved loop, ideal for hikers who prefer to take it a little slower.
Cultural: Returning to San Francisco, we’ll nally make it into Golden Gate Park. Riding bikes down John F. Kennedy Drive, we’ll stop by the Sixth Avenue Skate Park to watch rollerbladers dancing on their skates, learn how to lindy hop at Lindy in the Park and catch some live music at the Bandshell on the Music Concourse.
Cool History: Head over to Paci c Heights to see the Mrs.Doubt re house, and the Tanner family home from Full House
Lunch: Head to the Outer Richmond and stop at Angelina’s Deli-Café, grab a baguette and some chicken salad and enjoy sandwiches at a table outside the café. For dessert, Toy Boat sorbet is the way to go!
Valley Beach. On the way back, stop by Shoreline Co ee Shop for a delicious lunch or co ee.
Cultural: Head to Ross and explore the Marin Art & Garden Center.
Cool History: Start with a cup of co ee at The Depot in Lytton Square in downtown Mill Valley, and discuss the Gravity Train, and the fact that the depot actually was a train depot, and the square is named after Lytton Barber the rst soldier from Mill Valley to die in World War I. We can continue on past the Mill Valley Lumber Yard, and end up at a plaque on Locust Avenue, that marks the birthplace of Chief Marin.

A LOCAL CONNECTION TO AN INTERNATIONALLY CELEBRATED IRANIAN PHOTOGRAPHER
IN JULY, YALDA MOAIERY HELD HER FIRST SOLO EXHIBITION AT THE SAUSALITO CENTER FOR THE ARTS. HERE ARE SOME HIGHLIGHTS.
Sponsored by the Artistic Freedom Initiative, a nonpro t based in NYC that provides pro bono legal services to artists like Yalda who are persecuted in their homelands, Moaiery arrived in the U.S. after enduring several months in prison — her sixth stint behind bars — for photographing the Woman, Life, Freedom movement in Iran. Over the past two decades, she has been one of the premier Iranian documentary photographers, capturing many of the most iconic images of recent times. – Jason Rezaian
Maral Nakhai, a theatre student, chanting during a student demonstration at Tehran University on December 30th, 2017. Wide demonstrations were held in Tehran and other Iranian cities to protest the economic conditions of the country. Hundreds of people were arrested, killed and injured in these demonstrations that lasted for several months.
PHOTOGRAPHY BY YALDA MOAIERY
A girl watches the women’s athletics competition from the stands of Azadi Stadium in Tehran. Azadi Stadium is the biggest sports stadium in Iran, where women are not allowed to attend.
Two young girls who were arrested by the morality police for not observing the Islamic dress code (hijab) are screaming while getting ready to be transported to the station. Every year, the Iranian authorities, with a plan known as the “guidance patrol,” send thousands of women to prisons and detention centers for not observing the government’s required dress code.
Women are chanting during the first “Friday Prayer” on July 17th, 2009, led by Hashemi Rafsanjani after the election fraud protests. After the 2009 elections in Iran, in which Mahmoud Ahmadinejad won, the suspicion of fraud grew among the people, and many did not accept the results of the elections. Massive protests took place in Iran and hundreds were killed.

MARIN HOME
BY LOTUS ABRAMS
A Mill Valley home is remodeled to re ect the owners’ love for the Golden State.
PHOTOGRAPHY BY STEPHANIE RUSSO
The kitchen features creamy-hued cabinetry and glazed brick tile and a white oak island.
WITH ITS WARM, NEUTRAL COLOR PALETTE and natural wood elements, Gemma and Arik Andersons’ Mill Valley home evokes a refined, California-inspired sensibility with a nod to the English countryside, reflecting both the couple’s shared aesthetic and Gemma’s roots. “Gemma is originally from England, and I’m from Iowa,” Arik says. “We met and fell in love in San Francisco, and now we’ve both fallen in love with the Bay Area — especially Marin.”
Drawn to Marin’s natural beauty and proximity to the city, the Andersons decided to make the move with their two young daughters and dog in 2020, when they purchased their current home. Built in 1999, the 2,200-square-foot, multilevel, four-bedroom, three-bath house in Mill Valley already had a lot going for it: The light-filled, familyfriendly upstairs layout featured three bedrooms; the sunny, south-facing backyard offered plenty of space for the kids and dog to play; and the Sycamore Park
neighborhood location offered the sense of community the Andersons were searching for.

CONSTRUCTION
At the same time, the Andersons knew they would eventually want to renovate. In addition to suffering from an overabundance of gray tones and lackluster finishes throughout, the downstairs layout was disrupted by a partial wall separating the kitchen from a den area; the formal dining room located on the midlevel of the home had become a makeshift office; and the living room, which had an awkward pass-through window to the dining room, sat unused.
Bloom Builders
Among the couple’s requests: create an open, entertaining-ready kitchen and dining area downstairs; convert the original dining room into a family room; improve the functionality of the living room; and elevate the overall aesthetic.
“We love California, and our goal was for our house to mirror the natural beauty of our California location,” Gemma says.
A year after the Andersons moved in, they were ready to renovate, and it was an easy decision to work with Larkspurbased Katie Monkhouse Interior Design. “Not only did we love Katie’s work and design sense, but we also felt an easy, natural connection with her, right down to her having an English spouse!” Gemma says.
With a team that included contractor Bloom Builders, Principal Designer Katie Monkhouse set about bringing the Andersons’ vision to life, sourcing furniture and materials from California-based companies whenever possible, including Los Angeles designer Jenni Kayne and Tile Fever in Sausalito. “The biggest transformation was the kitchen and dining area, where we removed the wall,” Monkhouse says. Opening up the space made room for a new white oak island embellished with oversize linen-and-brass Workstead pendants hanging overhead.
The dining area is out tted for easy entertaining with a cocktail bar and a 12-foot-long banquette featuring built-in storage.
Details WHERE Mill Valley WHAT 4-bedroom, 3-bath remodel
The team also moved the sink to face the backyard for better visibility when the kids play outside. Creamy white cabinetry and glazed brick tile complete the design. Meanwhile, Monkhouse converted the former den adjacent to the kitchen into a dining area, outfitted for easy entertaining with a cocktail bar and a 12-foot-long banquette featuring built-in storage.
Vertical wall boards behind the banquette add visual interest, a detail repeated elsewhere in the house for design continuity. “It truly feels like the heart of the home now,” Monkhouse says.
Up a short flight of stairs, the former dining room is now a cozy family room for movie and game nights featuring a custom sofa with built-in storage, a wallmounted television and more discreet storage space under the stairs. “We continued the vertical wall boards that we had installed in the seating area under the stairs to make the cabinet doors disappear as much as possible,” Monkhouse says.
A few steps up in the formal living room, Monkhouse and the team closed off the awkward pass-through window, updated the fireplace with a gas insert and added intimate mid-level lighting and furniture from Jenni Kayne. “Before, the living room was so formal that it wasn’t warm and inviting, but now it feels like somewhere that you would want to hang out,” Monkhouse says.
Monkhouse also updated the bathrooms, adding details like hand-painted tiles, vertical wall boards and luxe marble finishes, and enhanced the bedrooms with updated trim, window treatments and floor coverings, completing the home’s family- and entertaining-friendly transformation.
“We couldn’t have asked for a better partner in Katie,” Gemma says. “She made it an enjoyable and collaborative process. We were so sad when we finally had to say goodbye to Katie and her team when the project was completed.”
Right, clockwise from top left: Vertical white oak paneling embellishes the tub in the primary bathroom; cleverly concealed under-stair storage adds functionality in the family room; the bedrooms were updated with new trim, window coverings and oor treatments.
Above: The living room is warm and inviting with new Jenni Kayne furniture, mid-level lighting and gas replace insert.

LOOKING BACK
When “Popping In” to Marin Joe’s was easy
BY JIM WOOD
Access is about the only thing that’s changed in 70 years
Today, while speeding through Corte Madera on Highway 101 (or is it the 101 Freeway?) it’s hard to miss Marin Joe’s. Perched on a hillside, tucked behind a chain-link fence and situated along the busy Casa Buena Drive, the restaurant stands as a landmark.
However, the scene was quite different in 1960. Back then, access to Marin Joe’s — like everything else — was simpler.
“There was no fence, no Casa Buena Drive,” says current co-owner Ralph Della Santina, “Customers just pulled off Highway 101 whenever they felt like it, often at the last minute.”
Della Santina and his older brother Paul, who currently operate Marin Joe’s, are grandnephews of Adolph Della Santina who opened the iconic restaurant and cocktail lounge in May of 1954. “At the time, Uncle Adolph was a partner in Original Joe’s at the corner of Chestnut and Fillmore in San Francisco, “ recalls Ralph, “but he wanted his own place, so instead of having yet another ‘Original Joe’s’ in San Francisco, he built an entirely new restaurant in a far-off location and called it ‘Marin Joe’s.’”
“They all thought Uncle Adolph was crazy,” adds Della Santina.“Yet, we’re still here 70 years later, and business is really great.” However, according to Della Santina the pandemic caused Marin Joe’s to revamp their business model and are no longer serving lunch, and offer dinner Wednesday through Sundays only, 4 to 10 p.m. As for when access to Marin Joe’s was dramatically altered, Della Santina is understandably unsure himself. “I think the Tamalpais Drive overpass was completed in late ‘61, followed by Casa Buena Drive shortly thereafter,” he says. “But I’m not sure because that was the year I was born.” Regardless, he’s confident the prominent “Marin Joe’s” sign out front remains the same one that was erected in 1954, and that few interior changes have been made over the landmark’s 70 years of existence. “The bar was shortened and the fireplace moved slightly,” Della Santina recalls, “and I think that’s it.”
However, when asked about a longtime customer Della Santina’s response is crisp: “That must be Romano ‘Skip’ Wumac,” he says, “Every time he comes in, he lets me know, ‘I was here the day this place opened.’ And he comes in a lot.”
