Growing up in a small suburban town, the population was predominantly white. I was the only Asian in my neighborhood, the only Asian in my high school, the only Asian in the shops I shopped at and places I ate at. Moving to Flushing, Queens, became a culture shock in my own culture. I suddenly blended in and moved with a crowd of my own people. I still felt distant. The sceneries around me were unfamiliar but gave me deja vu.

The book’s title acknowledges that Higgins is where we emerged and where we were originally from. However, we must stay away from its jurisdiction. 25 feet from Higgins is where students are allowed to smoke. “25 FEET Off Higgins” is where students are allowed to express themselves freely while having proximity to their base. It is a discussion from beyond Higgins; to be brought back into Higgins. “
