Rachael CONTENTS ILLUSTRATION: ‘The Longest Night’ by Owen Gent “I always like to create a sense of narrative and mystery in my work, and what better time than a winters sunrise. The characters are loosely based on the book I am currently working on which seems to creep into a lot of my work at the moment, though what is happening in the story is completely open to interpretation,” says illustrator Owen Gent talking about his inspirations for the work you see here, which he created with a combination of watercolour, gouache, pencil and collage on oil soaked paper. Currently studying Illustration (BA hons) at Falmouth, Owen’s goal is to write and create picture books for adults. “I’m currently illustrating my own wordless narrative book which will be finished in a couple of months,” he tells us. Interested in storytelling and mystery, Owen finds inspiration in situations where he can put pieces of a tale together. “Wondering where someone has been or where they’re going, or what the history of a building is can provide endless inspiration for my work,” he says before adding that being surrounded by incredible artists and the majesty of Cornwall also play there part in getting his creative juices flowing.
