The Learning Objective Profiler module was developed to deliver the benefits of applying learning objectives. Using data provided from the formative and summative assessments, it displays a graph that dynamically plots a student’s progress towards achieving the learning objectives for the course.

Learning objectives are used to clearly map out and design courses. Their specification and use is a very minimal activity but the rewards are significant. Authors assign weighted attributes against each assessment question, relating it to one or more of the learning objectives. This helps to ensure relevancy and to provide enhanced feedback on study progress.

Graphs show a student’s individual progress against the 14 learning objectives identified for this course. In this graph, the blue bar means an assessment pass for questions related to that specific learning objective; black is the total questions attempted so far by the student; and white the total questions available for each learning objective in all the assessments for the course. The numbers on the right reflect the same relative measure.

Tutors can also see this profile and intervene to provide support if required.

As the profile builds up, it shows the student where they are strong and where they seem weak. This offers them a useful guide as to where to focus their studies and how well prepared they are for any final assessments.

Students can select individual checkboxes shown here, and then the Selection Quiz button, to generate a new assessment quiz that contains questions only relating to the chosen learning objectives. The % percentage slider and Cutoff Quiz button lets them specify a level of learning objective pass, above which removes questions from that learning objective being included in generating a practice quiz. Learning objectives can be used with Assessment questions and with Inline interactive workbook questions. This illustration shows two profile tabs, as well as a Table of Contents tab explained later.

This shows a separate learning objective profile generated from the formative assessments embedded throughout the learning materials. These do not use the learning environment’s quiz engine, and provide an alternative assessment view of student progress against the learning objectives.

In 2016 CAPDM released a fully adaptive learning feedback capability, generically developed around the learning objective profiler. This illustrations shows how adaptive feedback can be used to highlight using colours in this example, where a student’s attention might be more profitably focused during revision. Red indicates where the assessed profile has shown least achievement of the learning objectives, meriting further study.

The Learning Objective Profiler feedback mechanism is popular with students, especially during revision time when it can generate random but targeted assessments for revision on demand. With a large enough underlying question bank, it can create personalised assessments based on particular learning objectives, such as those where a student is weak. This better adapts the learning environment to the needs of the individual student. Hyper-linking from a specific right or wrong answer back into an exact context in the core learning text increases the richness and relevance of the feedback given too. By processing the underlying information and data derived from the learning objective profiler, collecting valuable learning analytics is enabled, helping learning support staff to intervene appropriately. It helps to ensure that all materials are relevant to the course being developed, and offers course developers a wider choice of assessment methods and level design.
