Letter from the Publisher

Ten Years and Still Going Strong... If you had asked me back in 2006 if I would still be doing this Poker Run in ten years, I would have probably said, “No Way!” Also being in the marine business, there just isn't enough time in a summer to do both. Well, here I am, a couple dozen gray hairs later, always asking myself this time of year, "Why do you do this to yourself, Vic!" The answer is simple: I love planning and organizing this event that brings together some of the greatest people on God's green earth. That being said, the 10th Anniversary of Thunder in the City is upon us at last. I remember back in 2005, when I was contemplating taking a shot at hosting a Powerboat Poker Run, poker runs were very popular in all four corners of the country. I thought to myself, what a great way to connect my Performance Marine business and potential powerboat clients together in one arena. The possibilities were endless. I remember sitting down with my client and relatively new friend at the time, Tommy Gourzis, and I told him that I wanted to put together on the upper bay, a poker run like no other, with first class cuisine amenities and accommodations across the board. I had never understood why no one had thought to do one at the Chesapeake Inn Rest & Marine, the crown jewel of the upper bay as far as waterfront dock bars and fine cuisine were concerned. Tommy agreed that perhaps I was onto something. I then ran some names past him, and in the end Thunder in the City was born. I have been to my fair share of poker runs, from Rock the Bay in northeast Maryland, to Poker Runs America in Sarasota, Florida; FPBC Miami; and Key West. I watched how they operated their events, asking myself what I could do differently across the board to make mine unique. As I put my first foot forward in 2006, my premise was to keep it a first-class event from start to finish, no exceptions! And the Chesapeake Inn was the venue I knew would help make that happen. With the help of Tom Gourzis, I was able to put together an event that went off without a hitch. The buzz was overwhelming, and the gratitude of the attendees drove me to organize my second annual event. At the end of the day, I knew I was onto something great. After nine poker runs, two Puttin’ on the Wish poker run events for charity, and a perfect safety record, our attitude and the quality of our event has never been compromised nor diminished one bit in the last ten years, with first class cuisine and accommodations; great people always in attendance, local and abroad; and an unwillingness to compromise on a repetitive itinerary, year in and year out. Trying to keep it fresh and new every July, as we collectively embark on our poker run adventure down the Chesapeake Bay, is what I truly believe has made our event one of the most successful, popular poker runs on the Chesapeake Bay all these years. I truly hope you have enjoyed the last ten years of TITC as much as I have enjoyed the privilege of having all of you in attendance. Thank you for an awesome ten years!

fleet and what was under the hatch. By midafternoon the docks were full of colors and the sounds of raw horsepower, everyone was engaging in good time and cocktails, and the much-anticipated boat event of the season was just a push of the throttle away. For our Platinum, Gold, and Silver level sponsors and magazine advertisers, our annual VIP party was on Friday night at 7 pm, on the Inn's upper-level outside Veranda, and consisted of several hours of open-bar and selected CPI delicacies cooked on the outside grill. Here the business sponsors were given a chance to mingle and socialize among themselves while indulging in conversation of either business or pleasure. As for Thunder in the City, it is simply a chance to say, “Thank You!” Without your patronage our event would not be

a complete success year in and year out. Again, thank you to our 2015 and 2016 sponsors, and I hope you enjoyed the party! As the sun rose over the Chesapeake Inn Basin in historical Chesapeake City, MD, the eye candy of offshore performance boats lay shimmering in the marina, eagerly awaiting the turn of the key. After a lovely buffet breakfast upstairs in the luxurious banquet ballroom, it was time to get the drivers’ meeting under way as we went over all the rules and regulations, and reviewed our course for the card and lunch stops down the bay. With the sound of the helicopter overhead, it was time to head down to the docks and wake up the little town of Chesapeake City, MD, with the sound of thunder. With everyone's PFDs strapped on and kill lan-

With the ninth installment of Thunder in the City Power Boat Poker Run in the books, our poker run appears to show no signs of slowing down as we enter into 2016 and the 10-year Anniversary. With our fleet of 46 boats with Deep Vee and Catamaran hulls ranging from 26' to 43' and horsepower ranging from 420 to 3000, the stage was set for another high-pulse, adrenalinpumping poker run weekend on the Chesapeake Bay. As registration for the 2015 event kicked off Friday at noon at the lavish home base Chesapeake Inn Restaurant & Marina, and as the sounds of thunder rolled in from all four corners of the map, it was time to get the party started. With our annual dock party underway, the docks quickly filled with boats and poker run spectators, all eager to see the 2015

yards in place, it was time to head out to the milling area on the canal and into the open water of the bay. With the 38' Donzi ZX pace boat captained by George Bostwick ahead of the pack, we headed north, up the C&D Canal and into open water. The 2014 TITC PBPR was then officially underway. As we approached the first day marker just outside the canal, the orange flag was dropped and they were off into open water with throttle down! As the fleet approached the first card stop at Still Pond, approximately 25 miles down the bay, we were greeted by a 42' Sea Ray Express Cruiser captained by Robyn Murry. From there we headed a short distance west to Poole's Island, where we were greeted by—Wait, no one's there because Max partied too hard the night before.

of the trip. Back up the bay was card stop number four, a new, up and coming hot spot: the Shanty Beach Bar at Tolchester Marina. Here we would settle in for a few hours for our afternoon dock-up. We officially terminate the run here so everyone can enjoy a few cocktails or the world famous ice cream sandwich Frozen Mud Slide while listening to the island music and enjoying the

scenic view of CPB and the beach front. As the late afternoon wound down, it was time to fire up the boat and head to homeport (Chesapeake Inn) to get settled in for the much-awaited dinner party and poker hand drawing at 7 pm. As the evening settled in, it was time to head to the lavish CPI banquet ballroom for the poker run party and card drawing. This is one of my favor-

From there the fleet continued west, with approximately another 10 miles to Sunset Cove in Middle River for lunch and card stop number three. Here everyone got a chance to relax and enjoy some delicious island cuisine and a cool drink at the Shanty Beachfront Bar and Restaurant. Several hours later, it was time to get the boats fired back up for the next leg

ite parts of the event: walking into the upstairs ballroom with the buttered hors d’oeuvres being served; the elegant table settings; and the two large video screens playing back videos and still photographs of the day's event, taken from both land and air in HD by seasoned veteran photographer Randy Nuzzo and videographer Rich Kolbe. And of course, seeing the faces of everyone having a wonderful

time truly makes it all worthwhile for me as I enter into my tenth anniversary this year. Last year the cuisine consisted of the usual hors d’oeuvres such as scallops wrapped in bacon, stuffed mushrooms with crab, shrimp legion, jumbo shrimp cocktails and other assorted delicacies. Dinner consisted of apple wood smoked beef tenderloin, European cut and served with a rich cabernet-infused demi-glace

filet; free range breast stuffed with a spicy chicken sausage, blackened, seasoned, and oven-roasted; blue cheese mornay sauce and pico de gallo salsa; and CPI famous homemade crab cakes, panseared golden brown with assorted sides to compliment the meal. And the meal would not have been complete without the variety of homemade desserts. With dinner out of the way, it was T H U N D E R I N T H E C I T Y / july 2016

time to party and play some poker. As the evening went on and the dust settled, we had our winner for 2015. Andy Strobert and his 36' Skater from Rockville, MD, took third place with two kings and two queens. Second place went to Scott Prange and his 35' Sonic from Wilmington, DE, with an 8, 9, 10, jack, and queen. The first place poker hand winner and trophy went to Scott Campbell and his 33' Scarab from Doylestown, PA, with a four 7's king high. As the evening went on, the time came for the awards ceremony, and this year's winners definitely strutted their stuff. Best Paint and Graphics went to John Pentz and his gorgeous 38' Ocean Express Cat. Best Rigging went to Mike Cassidy and his 42' Fountain Lighting engine compartment with a pair of 1325 Potter Performance Engines. Best Dressed Crew went 36 T H U N D E R I N T H E C I T Y / july 2016

to Richard and Denise Thomas and their crew of the 39 Cigarette Top Gun Unlimited. Most Horsepower award went to Andy Strobert from Rockville, MD, with his 36' Skater boasting a pair of twin Sterling 1550 SC engines. To close out the ceremony, the award for Furthest Traveled for 2015 went to our eight-time consecutive participant from the Ohio/Western Pennsylvania line Don Pinak. I would like to personally thanks each and every one of the 2015 Poker Run Participants, as well as a very special thanks to its sponsors and advertisers for making our event by far one of the most popular and safest poker runs on the Chesapeake Bay to date. Its success in large part is all because of each and every one of you. Thank you! We look forward to seeing everyone at this year's 10th Anniversary of Thunder in the City.
