Your character is lost while looking for love. Do you relate to him? Josh is basically this prototype of every person that’s single. I think for most people, it’s hard to find that special person you connect to. This season he’s in a relationship. Has that been fun to play? I adore it. It’s a pretty big storytelling risk. But if you pull it off, it ends up making something really special, which I think we’ve done.

I was so happy when I saw Mary on the cover. Thank you for a wonderful tribute. I fell in love with her on The Dick Van Dyke Show and was thrilled when she got her own show. She really did turn the world on with her smile. She will be missed.

Mary Tyler Moore, both in her life and in her death, epitomizes what the best of celebrity truly stands for— an all-American beauty inside and out. She will live in all of our hearts forever.

Thank you for including the faces of the immigration ban this week. The story brought tears to my eyes. This article is just what the American public needs to see right now.

THEIR PALACE LIFE TOGETHER The couple stepped out at Soho House in London on Feb. 1. Below: Kensington Palace.

LEAVING LONDON’S EXCLUSIVE SOHO HOUSE ON Feb. 1, Prince Harry and Meghan Markle “were good together—smiling, laughing, holding hands,” says an observer. “He was very protective of her.” The outing marked the most public date yet for the couple, who confirmed their romance in November. Since the start of the new year, says an insider, the pair have been “inseparable,” using Harry’s cozy two-bedroom Nottingham Cottage at Kensington Palace as a home base. Says a second source: “They are PEOPLE February 20, 2017

really just enjoying spending time together.” It’s clear they can’t get enough. With Markle, 35, on a shooting break from her USA legal drama Suits, the pair have settled into a comfortable domesticity within the privacy of the cottage, which features a small living room and kitchen. In addition to grocery shopping and home cooking at the palace, the Los Angeles-raised actress has been enjoying her London life while getting to know Harry’s friends better. “She is sweet,” says one pal. “They are very happy.” So is there a ring on the horizon? (Contrary to reports, the “h” ring she appeared to be wearing during an outing to the florist on Feb. 5 was in fact a Missoma piece featuring

double arrows.) Engagement is “certainly one possible outcome,” says a royal source, who does counter that seasoned heads might caution the couple against going too far, too fast. For now, there is at least one hurdle: Markle is not thought to have met Harry’s 90-year-old grandmother Queen Elizabeth. Because Harry, 32, is fifth in line to the throne, he is required to have the monarch’s permission to marry. But a meeting could happen in the coming weeks, with the Queen due back in London for her springtime engagements and Markle not expected on the Suits set until April. Before then, the sporty pair may jet off for a ski break, some royal insiders predict. Love is also a big theme— what’s the secret to your happy marriage with Eddie Cibrian? We respect each other; respect is a big deal, and once you lose that, you’ve kind of lost everything. Why ICare

My friend and mentor Marian Wright Edelman PERSONAL STORIES founded the Children’s Defense Fund. Her mission is to ABOUT GIVING make sure that every child has a safe start. I first got BACK involved with the organization after Hurricane Katrina. My mom is from New Orleans, and I went down and saw the children who were left behind after the storm. The school and health care systems were not operating properly. There was a hospital set up in a department store. When you bear witness to something like that, it’s impossible not to feel called to action. The organization lobbies Congress on behalf of children. They are building schools and making sure children have scholarships. This past year I became a mom when I had my son Hunter, and when I went to an event in December the work they do hit even closer to home. Children are abandoned every day, and I just can’t fathom that. The Children’s Defense Fund is doing important, tangible work For more information, go that I’m proud to be a part of. to childrensdefense.org –REPORTED BY MIA McNIECE

Girls

Even if Lena Dunham finds happiness, it won’t be the ever-after kind No. COMEDY The sixth and final season of HBO’s landmark show about four young women navigating adulthood—accompanied by uncomfortable truths and unwise delusions—begins with two terrific episodes: Hannah (Dunham), settling into an odd mix of Nora Efron and Erica Jong, writes a magazine piece on Hamptons women infatuated with their surf instructor (Rogue One’s Riz Ahmed), with whom Hannah enjoys vigorous, sloppy sex. Shoshanna (Zosia Mamet) can’t find a job to match her business drive, Jessa (Jemima Kirke) is losing her ethereal charm while remaining curiously unmotivated, and Marnie (Allison Williams) treats the men she loves with oblivious cruelty. “How did I end up here,” she moans after another romantic fiasco. If she doesn’t know, we do. Girls’ genius (and that’s the right word) is that we’re always surprised by these characters’ choices, good or bad, yet everything they do seems inevitable. As a philosopher said, “Become what you are.” They’ve become. (HBO, Feb. 12, 10 p.m.)

John Wick: Chapter 2

Just a reminder to never, ever mess with Keanu Reeves ACTION In the original 2014 movie, a pulpy cult hit, Reeves played an assassin who dragged himself out of brooding retirement to punish the Russian mobsters who killed...his puppy. This time, with a debt to repay and a bounty on his head, he’s facing a bloodthirsty bunch who kill according to their own peculiarly evolved code (it involves hotels). With ampedup action and new friends and foes (including Reeves’s Matrix costar Laurence Fishburne), Chapter Two is everything that John Wick and Keanu fans could want. Plausible? Not very. Kick-ass? The Oscars Will La La Land come out singing? Will Casey Affleck go home smiling? Our rundown on the night’s top races

La La Land Casey Affleck (left) with Lucas Hedges

BEST PICTURE

La La Land Fourteen nominations for a chamber musical that pays homage to classics of the genre (including some French ones) is arguably too much of a good thing. It’s as if you packed a brownbag lunch with 14 tins of caviar. But—unlike 2002’s Best Picture Chicago—this slender, bittersweet story about the power and fragility of romance has redefined the movie musical for a new generation. Only Hidden Figures, a big, uplifting hit, is heading into the final stretch with the same love—but not the same adulation. BEST ACTOR

Casey Affleck, Manchester by the Sea Affleck’s win seemed inevitable until Fences’ Denzel Washington pulled an upset at the Screen Actors Guild Awards. If Affleck does end up losing to him (again), no one has any cause to carp: Washington’s performance is so stupendously meaty you’re

Viola Davis

tempted to get out the grill and reach for the seasonings. Affleck may have lost support, as well, from the controversy over past sexual-harassment allegations (which he has denied). But his performance as a man crippled by grief is a maximal-minimal classic: He holds back tears, and everyone else sobs buckets. He’ll win. BEST ACTRESS

Emma Stone, La La Land Stone has been gaining momentum—Golden Globe,

BEST SUPPORTING ACTOR

Mahershala Ali, Moonlight Although he lost to Nocturnal Animals’ Aaron Taylor-Johnson at the Golden Globes, Ali has done well this awards season— his is the rare supporting performance that upholds an entire film. The competition is impressive—there’s newcomer Lucas Hedges in Manchester—

Emma Stone

but his understated performance as a drug dealer who becomes a father figure will win. BEST SUPPORTING ACTRESS

Viola Davis, Fences Here’s another category where there’s no need for Fences-sitting: Davis has won prize after prize for her magnificent performance as Washington’s sorely tested wife. If you want to quibble that she ought to have been bumped up into the Best Actress race, then let this make up for the supporting Oscar she should have won for 2008’s Doubt. More on the nominated actresses, p. 86

Screen Actors Guild Award—and now all that early-in-the-season talk about Natalie Portman’s Jackie feels nostalgic, like a piano playing “Camelot” in the Kennedy White House. La La cements Stone’s standing as a major actress who can put a performance across with no visible effort. And those eyes! They can do everything except sing and dance. It’s a shame, though, that the Academy completely overlooked the single best actress of 2016: Amy Adams. She was flawless in two radically different roles in two radically different movies: a sadly reflective linguist in Arrival and a glam but glum art dealer in Nocturnal Animals.

Chrissy Metz’s first foray onto a red carpet wasn’t exactly an auspicious one. “I basically felt like I was sneaking on,” she jokes. She’d just scored the role that would kick-start her career, as the “fat lady” in the circus on 2014’s American Horror Story: Freak Show. But for the show’s premiere, she attended in a dress that came off the rack from Nordstrom, and “I brought a friend to be my date,” she says with a sigh. Two years later, as the breakout star of NBC’s smash dramaThis Is Us, Metz has a Golden Globe nomination under her belt and has become a red carpet regular with designers like Christian Siriano engaged to dress her. “It still hasn’t really sunk in,” she confesses, sipping from a cup of hot water with ginger. “I always watched awards shows at home. It’s crazy—flash forward, and John Travolta’s a foot in front of me. I’m elated to be here.” With a hit show and a hot new boyfriend (she’s been seeing This Is Us cameraman Josh Stancil, 40, for four months and says, “He’s very mature. We’re in a very healthy relationship”), the 36-year-old actress has every reason to feel pretty content. But as she embraces becoming a role modelfor body positivity,Metz admits she still has conflicting feelings about her size. “Sometimes I feel like I’m two people: I’m proud of who I am as a person, but I do want to be at a healthy weight,” she says. “Just not for anybody but myself.”

own terms has been challenging. It has meant embracing her body—she bared all in the opening minutes of the This Is Us pilot, which was watched by 14 million people—but it has also meant remaining open to the potential for change. When Metz revealed that her show contract requires her to lose weight just as her character, Kate Pearson, will be doing on the show, some fans reacted with outrage that she was required to slim down. (Metz now tells People her contract with NBC does not mandate a specific workout regimen, any surgery or include an explicit weight-loss target.) The actress understands the response but says, “You have to use what

you have, and I wouldn’t have this role if I had already lost weight. Now it’s about telling a story of a woman struggling with her weight, just as I have and still am.” Indeed it’s been a lifelong struggle for the actress, who first remembers becoming selfconscious about her body when she stepped onto a Weight Watchers scale at age 11. “I was like, ‘Why am I the only kid here? This is weird,’” says Metz, whose mother had brought her along to a meeting she was attending. “My family is German, Irish and Italian, so food is love. When you’re sad, ‘Here, eat.’ When you’re happy, ‘Have some!’ I wasn’t aware I was chubby.” Raised by parents who divorced when she was young, Metz went from being the youngest of three in a family that struggled financially to a middle child with two younger, slimmer half sisters when her mother remarried and relocated the family to Gainesville, Fla. Metz recognizes the impact the upheaval had on her. “Everyone was vying for attention; you’re all feeling a bit inadequate,” she recalls of her blended family. “You try not to take it personally when it seems like your mom’s having a better time going school shopping with your sister who is thin,” she admits. “You try not to get in your head.” By middle school Metz began hiding her body under T-shirts at the beach and using food “as a crutch, to numb myself,” she says. “When you’d put the food down, the feelings would come up. So you eat because you don’t feel good, and then you feel terrible and so you eat.” Bouts of self-deprivation

to identify, as he does not work in the industry and she wants to respect his privacy. Metz gained over 100 lbs. before a health scare on her 30th birthday. Hours before her party, she began having heart palpitations. “I thought, ‘Oh my God, I’m going to die,’” she recalls. Doctors diagnosed a panic attack and issued a stern warning. “I was so gung ho, I lost 100 lbs. in less than five months,” she says. “All I did was eat a 2,000-calorie diet and walk 20 minutes a day.” Though she declines to reveal her current weight, Metz says she has kept most of that weight off since focusing on overhauling herself physically and emotionally. She took up meditation, was amicably divorced and renewed her acting pursuits, eventually landing on American Horror Story. Wearing a fat suit for the role “was sobering,” she says. “I thought, ‘What if I become that heavy and can’t walk around or get stuck in the doorframe? I was like, ‘I don’t want this for me.’” A year later she landed the breakout role of Kate on This Is Us. Fans immediately reacted with appreciation. “You don’t realize that somebody who’s average or even very fit could relate to someone who’s overweight,” she says of the feedback she’s gotten,“butit’snotabout oursize—it’showwelook at ourselves and how we feel about ourselves.” Adds her costar Milo Ventimiglia: “Chrissy is one of those people that just has this beautiful soul, and you see it in her performance.” As for what’s next, Metz is clear that she intends to lose weight, and to that end she has been working out with a trainer but denies recent reports that she had secret gastric bypass. “I want to have a fit, healthy body and not have to be put in a box,” she says. “I don’t want to be limited by anything.”

It wasn’t until she boyfriend Josh Stancil at a SAG tagged along as her younger sister preparty. Morgana went on a model casting call in 2003, though, that she realized she had potential as a performer. “The scouts fell in love with Chrissy within five minutes,” Morgana recalls of Metz, who belted out an impromptu rendition of Christina Aguilera’s “Beautiful.” “She was funny, likable, relatable. They convinced her to pursue acting.” A size 12 at that time, Metz followed her then-manager’s advice to lose 50 lbs. But when she moved to L.A. a year later, the aspiring actress fell into a “soul-crushing” 10-year spiral of weight gain and depression. Withauditions for women hersize scarce (“I’d be getting maybe two auditions a year, and I’d always see the same small group of girls”), Metz thought, “Maybe I’m just not cut out for this. ess than a year ago it looked like Beyoncé was ready to say “boy, bye” to her eight-year marriage to Jay Z. Her hit visual album Lemonade may have explained why, reportedly hinting at Jay’s indiscretions and sending the world into a tailspin wondering who “Becky with the good hair” was from the song “Sorry.” But the couple, who allegedly worked hard on their marriage after the album’s release, have come out in a much better place, and on Feb. 1 Beyoncé, 35, announced on Instagram that they’re expecting twins. “We have been blessed two times over,” she wrote, beneath a photo of her cradling the new bump. WHY SHE WALKED AWA Y

Hurt and offended after losing her Today show time slot to Megyn Kelly, the anchor turned down millions to stay. Inside her shocking decision By JANINE RUBENSTEIN

tanding inside the closet of her chic Manhattan apartment, Tamron Hall sifts through piles of designer duds she plans to donate. “I have Jimmy Choo, Christian Louboutin, I’ve got work clothes, I’ve got party clothes,” she says, wearing a colorful printed onesie and sorting through bags of clothes in a video posted on Twitter on Feb. 2. “I have packed up a mother lode!” For the ever-bubbly journalist, this year an “out with the old, in with the new” philosophy has turned out to apply to much more than spring cleaning. Just one day prior to her closet purge came the shocking announcement that the coanchor of the Today show was leaving the network—four days after learning that she’d lost the 9 a.m. time slot she shared with Al Roker to former Fox News anchor Megyn Kelly, who will join the show in September. In a statement, Hall, 46, said simply that she was “excited” to start a new chapter. NBC execs said they were “disappointed” by her decision to go. But behind the scenes, multiple sources reveal that the anchor was furious, hurt and offended by what she con-

Signing Off After a decade, Tamron Hall (photographed by People in N.Y.C. last March) has decided to leave NBC. “She wasn’t going to settle for just sitting on the sidelines,” says a source with knowledge of the situation.

Hall’s story has always been shaped by ambition.

Growing up in the small rural town of Luling, Texas, with her mom, stepfather and four siblings, Hall had big dreams. “I wanted to be Johnny Carson,” she told People last year in a revealing sit-down. “I just loved the show. I was a nosy kid. I was journaling and interviewing neighbors when I was like 4 and 5.” Later Hall found inspiration in the form ofDallas’sfirstAfrican-AmericannewsanchorIola Johnson. “It wasn’t until I saw someone that looked like me that made me know I could do it,” she said. A graduate of Temple University, Hall got her start on-air as a local reporter at a Texas news station before landing an anchor role in Chicago. In 2007 she headed to NBC News in New York 64

City. “We would joke and say that I was like the fifth Beatle,” Hall recalled of her original role on Today, filling in for Natalie Morales on weekends. “When I was offered the official spot, I was like, ‘How do you “announce” it when you’re like the houseguest who’d never leave?’ But I was honored to become part of the family.” Her real family exulted in the happy news. After coping with a horrific family tragedy years prior (Hall’s sister Renate was murdered after years of relationships with abusive men; the case remains unresolved), Hall’s big new gig was a bright spot. “My mother called me and said, ‘You know, I was reading somewhere that you will be the first black woman to host the Today show ever’...I just started crying,” Hall told People. “With all the adversities, there I was accomplishing something beyond anything that I imagined.” Today, with its upbeat tone and eclectic coverage, seemed a perfect fit for Hall, who developed a wide-ranging network of powerful contacts, from Prince, whom she called a “very close friend,” to Donald Trump. Even Hollywood took notice. “She’s fly, she’s beautiful and so whip smart, but it’s her authenticity that comes across immediately,” says Brock Akil, creator of the hit BET drama Being Mary Jane, who says Hall was the inspiration behind the sexy, single, career-driven protagonist played by Gabrielle Union. Hall appreciated the uniqueness of her situation—and the responsibility that came with it. “I know it’s rare to have

sidered a “demotion” from anchoring her own hour (in addition to her other work on Dateline NBC and the MSNBC network) to appearing in an amorphous role during the 7 a.m. and 8 a.m. hours of the show, which already boast multiple anchors and correspondents. Network execs were baffled, sources say, by Hall’s decision to pass up a contract worth millions of dollars. But those who know the journalist well say the decision to move on was Hall taking a stand for her career and the respect she’s worked for all of her life. “She basically said thank you, but no thank you,” says Hall’s close friend Mara Brock Akil. “Tamron’s a woman of integrity, and she’s writing her own story.”

1. Hall (alongside Savannah Guthrie, Matt Lauer and Al Roker in 2013) “was always a team player,” says a source. 2. “The biggest compliment is when fans tell me, ‘You’re so real,’” Hall told People last year. 3. “They decided they cared about Megyn Kelly more,” a source says of NBC’s decision to offer the former Fox News star Hall’s time slot.

After spending 10 years rising through the ranks

at the network, Hall had most recently been enjoying added exposure, filling in early mornings during host Savannah Guthrie’s maternity leave and hosting the 9 a.m. hour alongside Al Roker following Billy Bush’s abrupt departure from the show in October amid the election scandal. “She was the only person left standing in the hour after the Bush implosion happened,” says a source. “She stepped up and said, ‘I can handle the whole hour,’ but when they paired her with Al, she was a pro about it. And the two of them did a fantastic job together.” For the past several weeks the pair were even beating Kelly Ripa’s long-running Live with Kelly in the ratings. As her contract came up this month, sources say Hall was optimistic that she’d lock down the 9 a.m. hour. “Just a few days before all of this happened, she received an e-mail [from an exec] congratulating the team for being No. 1,” a source close to Hall tells People. “Then all of a sudden, it was like it vanished: Megyn Kelly is coming onboard, and who’s going to have to move? Tamron. That’s who.” Another source close to the situation insists Hall had long been made aware that her current time slot was not set in stone. “The idea that she could have been at all surprised rings totally false,” says the source, adding that with soft ratings “Tamron was told many months ago, a longterm commitment could not be made to her regarding the 9 a.m. show, but she was offered millions of dollars to remain. The staff is hurt and bewildered.” The network’s decision to trade Hall and Roker’s show for the staunchly conservative stylings of a high-profile Fox News alum was met with tough scrutiny, most notably from the National Association of Black Journalists, who publicly decried the decision as “whitewashing.” (A rep for the network countered: “NBC News has a long and proven history as an industry leader in newsroom diversity.”) And a network source insists that any decisions having to do with Hall’s role on-air were made independently of the Kelly news. “The idea that she was pushed out for Megyn is not true,” says a source. “Most of this was decided while Megyn was still at Fox.” As for what comes next, one thing is certain: Nobody doubts that Hall will land on her feet. As of press time, it’s unclear what Hall’s next move will be, though a media source says CNN chief Jeffrey Zucker is currently “making a big play” for her. “She is great at what she does,” explains her friend,

CBS This Morning’s Gayle King. “I heard she was giving her work clothes away, but I would advise her not to do that. I suspect we will see her back on-air sooner rather than later.” In the meantime the self-proclaimed workaholic finally has a bit of time to focus on herself. “Did my career impact decisions I’ve made regarding marriage and having children? Yes,” Hall told People last year, sharing that she had broken off two engagements. “But I’m not a victim of my achievement.” In the days after her NBC departure, Hall attended the Super Bowl with her nephew back in her home state of Texas. “Sometimes you just need to go home and get loved on,” says Brock Akil. “I hope she’s resting and has a glass of champagne. So one afternoon the high school freshman skipped track practice and ran away to the city to “find herself.” She met a 32-year-old man who offered her a place to stay and won her trust with gifts and long, late-night conversations where he listened to stories about her hopes and dreams. Within days those teenage dreams became a nightmare. He beat and raped her and posted

The phone rang off the hook as he took her to meet men in hotel rooms around the clock. “At one point I finally accepted this was my fate and this was what I was going to be doing for the rest of my life,” says J.S., who agreed to tell People her story as long as her name wasn’t used. “I just kind of gave up.” Instead J.S., now 22, found the strength to be a survivor. Rescued during a sting operation after police saw her photo on backpage.com, J.S. has since filed a lawsuit against the classified website, arguing that backpage.com’s CEO Carl Ferrer and former owners Michael Lacey and James Larkin knowingly permit the sale of underage girls for sex. Her story—and those of other young girls who became trapped in the multimilliondollar sex-trafficking industry—is the focus of the documentary I Am Jane Doe, opening in theaters Feb. 10. “Child sex trafficking in America today is a corporate enterprise,” says Yiota Souras, general counsel for the National Center for Missing & Exploited Children, who appears in the film. While they take some comfort in knowing J.S.’s pimp—who was convicted of promoting commercial sex abuse of a minor, third-degree child rape and second-degree assault—was sentenced to 26 years in prison for his crimes, “we’re not the same family we were in 2010,” says Nacole. When she was rescued, J.S. says, “I didn’t know if I was going to be in trouble or if my parents were going to be mad”— an admission that brings tears to her parents’ eyes even now. “I can’t imagine how overwhelming it must’ve been for her,” says her father, Tom. “We need the stigma of what she suffered to go away so these kids are not victimized again.” Not long after her rescue, J.S. moved out of the Seattle area to start a new life. A single mother of two—she has a 6-month-old son and 3-year-old daughter—she recently got her driver’s license and is preparing to attend beauty school. “I am happy,” she says. “My kids are a big part of my healing.” And she is prepared to fight hard to make sure that girls like her daughter never go through anything like the horror she did. “I want to see Backpage ads completely shut down and for them to finally be held accountable for what they’ve done,” she says. “I wanttobeavoicenotjustformebutforallgirls.”

other lawsuits against backpage.com in places such as Texas and Alabama. “Child sex trafficking happens in every state, in every community, in every jurisdiction,” says Souras. “It’s big business and it’s one of the worst crimes imaginable.” Meanwhile the state of California has charged Ferrer, Lacey and Larkin with money laundering and conspiracy to commit pimping. (All have pleaded not guilty and are free on bail awaiting trial.) And last month the U.S. Senate’s Permanent Subcommittee on Investigations released a blistering bipartisan report alleging “Backpage has knowingly concealed evidence of criminality by systematically editing” its ads todisguise the fact that they involve prostitution and child sex trafficking.“The profit they were making was obscene and the fact they were comfortable making that profit on the backs of children that were being sold for sex,” says Sen. Claire McCaskill, who co-authored the report, “it’s hard to contemplate that kind of evil.” Ferrer, Lacey and Larkin have not commented on the report or the lawsuits. But their attorneys have previously said that federal law protects backpage.com from liability for any harm resulting from an ad posted on their site by a third party. They also claim that the site’s nowsuspended “adult section” actually assisted law enforcement. “It breaks my heart we had to shut it down,” says backpage.com attorney Elizabeth McDougall. “Now the cops don’t know where to

For the new sequel—and the trilogy’s finale, Fifty Shades Freed, in 2018—“I was given a little bit more control over how I wanted to play him,” says Dornan, who set out to “make him more human. I felt like maybe some of that wasn’t achieved in the first movie, if I’m being really honest.” One person who won’t be the judge of that: his wife, who skipped the first movie and probably won’t see this one. “It’s totally her choice, but I don’t imagine why she’d want to see it,” he says. “I’m not going to tell her what she can and can’t do; I’m very un-Christian-Grey-like in that way.” So what do they watch together—other than Frozen and Trolls, WatchPeople Features: Jamie of course? “We’re like Dornanon thePeople/ everyone else,” he says Entertainment Weekly Network with a smile. “Netflix (PEN).Go to and Downton [Abbey]. people.com/pen, or download We binge when the kids the app on your favorite device. are asleep.”

fter coming out as a gay male in her teens and later as a transgender female, Gigi Lazzarato thought she was done with coming out. But that all changed when the popular Internet sensation, 24, met model and activist Natalia “Nats” Getty, also 24, last February. “It’s crazy how life takes you on these roads that you’d never expect,” says Lazzarato, who came out as a lesbian to her 2.4 million YouTube subscribers in September. “I never imagined I’d fall for a woman. But I wouldn’t change it for the world.” Before meeting Getty, who’s the greatgranddaughter of oil tycoon J. Paul Getty, Lazzarato dated Internet personality Cory Binney. “I was new to living life as my authentic self, so when I found someone who accepted me, I was on top of the world,” she says of her former relationship with Binney. Now the influencer— who made international headlines last August when she released a video saying she’d been detained at a Dubai airport because she is trans—is reflecting on her journey in the new documentary This Is Everything: Gigi Gorgeous (available on YouTube Red). “It was difficult,” she says of watching her life story play out onscreen. “But it made me realize that now I’m on the right track. Now I feel more like myself than ever.”

THE SINGER KNOWN FOR HER AUDACIOUS OUTFITS OPENS UP ABOUT LAUNCHING A LINE OF WHIMSICAL FOOTWEAR What inspired you to launch your own shoe collection? I’ve been courting this idea for several years. For half my career, people have been asking me when I’m getting into fashion. It’s always been simmering under the surface, but I wanted to do it the right way and be the real creative contributor. This is something that I’ve created from the bottom up. And you really went for it—there are 40 styles in your first collection! There are so many different vibes [in the line] because that’s who I am, and I love so many different things. They all represent my personality and the many moods and characters I’ve displayed throughout my

life and career. Fashion is a way to express yourself, so I wanted to make personality pieces that will help you put an exclamation mark at the end of your wardrobe. We can say we’re funny or romantic or serious or sarcastic just by how we display ourselves. What led you to develop this fashion sense? When I first got to L.A., I cultivated my style on a budget, always shopping at thrift stores or vintage stores. Once, I found these flats that looked like dalmatian dogs. They had ears that moved and a tongue that stuck out. They were such a conversation piece. That’s what is so great about fashion. It’s a form of

communication. You don’t ’t have to start a smoking habit to start talking to The someone. You can just wear Shannon $129 cool shoes. It’s an icebreaker. Do you care if people don’t like what you wear? No. I’ve given up on what people think about me. I have a great group of peoplee around me that I listen to and value their opinions. I gave up on scrolling down on the comments. Other than your own designs, do you own a lot of shoes? I have a lot more than I should. But isn’t that normal for anyone in my situation? One day I’d like to be a tech giant and wear the same utilitarian thing every day. Although five days a week, I’m in an Adidas tracksuit ksuit and d slides slides.

the updo you choose: The woven fabric on her dress inspired me to create an accent braid. WORK WITH WHAT YOU’VE GOT! I believe in embracing your natural texture rather than changing it. For instance, Nicole has a tighter curl, so I rough-dried her hair, then defined her waves using a

1-in.-barrel curling iron. And to fight frizz, I applied a dime size of styling cream throughout her hair. GET CLEVER WITH SHORTER CUTS If the length of your hair is on the shorter side, it can be tricky to get all of it into an updo. But you can still have fun with the front by sweeping it into a textured bun, like what I did with Kate’s hair. It’s a cool look without it feeling too intentional. SECURE YOUR STYLE I overdo it with the bobby pins! Wherever I put one, I always crisscross another in the same place to make sure I lock that section down. I try to use pins

the same color as my client’s hair so it’s easier to hide them. FRAME YOUR FACE Sometimes after I’ve created a style— like Zoë’s loose, low bun—I’ll release a few tendrils by pulling out a couple of pieces around the front of my client’s hairline. To me, this creates a romantic feel. You don’t want to tug. The pieces should come out easily. I think details like that make updos extra-special. ADD SOME SHINE I always finish with a few sprays of a shine mist. Even with a style like Brie’s that’s supposed to have a messy, unfinished texture, a little spritz helps the hair look healthy and pretty.

FEEL FREE TO EXPERIMENT Right after I got out of cosmetology school, one of my first jobs was to create an updo for Sarah Michelle Gellar. Even though they can be challenging, I’ve always loved them because there are endless opportunities to do something really unique and personal. You just have to play around. It isn’t about being exact or perfect. It’s about feeling good. CONSIDER YOUR CLOTHING When an outfit has a cool neckline or pattern, like Emma’s, I feel like the right move is to bring the hair up so it doesn’t compete. I also think those dress details can influence

Famke Janssen THE ACTRESS, 52, STARS IN NBC’S NEW SPINOFF THE BLACKLIST: REDEMPTION Last time I danced

Last OCD moment

I dance all the time. I take dance classes like Zumba or hip-hop whenever I can. Dancing is probably my favorite thing to do in the world. It keeps you in incredible shape, and it just puts a big smile on my face.

Where to begin? I obsess over work. I’ll just decide not to sleep, and stay up to work on my dialogue. It’s not the healthiest, but I can function on chocolate and espresso, and I’ll dance to blow off steam. It all comes full circle. Reported by Julie Jordan

Last indulgence I indulge in chocolate every single day of my life. I am obsessed with it. Right now I’m eating 100 percent dark chocolate with a little bit of coconut, so I’ve decided it’s healthy.

Last time I cried My doggie Licorice moves me to tears sometimes. He’s an old Boston terrier— he’s 16, he’s blind, and it breaks my heart sometimes because he’s so dependent on me. But he’s still with me, knock on wood.

Last time I was recognized I live in New York, so it happens a lot. Sometimes I’m Jean [from X-Men] or my name gets butchered. Mostly it’s a variation like “Fam-key” and not “Fahm-ka,” but the worst is when an “r” is involved, like “Frum-key.” It’s not “frumpy,” but it leans in that direction. MAARTEN DE BOER/NBC UNIVERSAL
