2014. The students will be provided a stipend of P260 per day and a meal allowance of P80 per day or a total of P340 per person per weekend work d a y. This will not only help local students to continue their education but it will also pave the way for the rehabilitation of parks and plazas and other tourism assets, Director Tiopes said. The program was conceptualized by DOT as its contribution in the rehabilitation and rebuilding programs of government. (PIA 8)

NMP in Tacloban moving ahead as it slowly recovers after Yolanda BY: CONSUELO ALARCON


he National Maritime Polytechnic (NMP), the only maritime training school in the region, is moving ahead as it slowly recovers from the destruction it has suffered from super typhoon Yolanda. Atty. Forter Puguon Sr., Executive Director of the National Maritime Polytechnic said, during an interview with him over PIA’s Power FM, that NMP has already made a roadmap towards rehabilitation and reconstruction of the training institution. Initially, NMP has fixed the roofs of several buildings and other structures which were heavily damaged by the typhoon. Others were even totally destroyed like the staff house, among others. Approximately, three hundred million pesos (P3-M) worth of damages was incurred based on the initial assessment held a week after the super typhoon hit the region in November last year. Meanwhile, NMP is inviting all seafarers and those who needs training in region 8 to resurface and enroll at the training school as it resumes some training courses such as marine electrical system, auxiliary machinery system, faculty development courses, maritime law course and anti-piracy courses. By the end of the year, Puguon looks forward to offer all courses needed by the seafarers and other trainees as they continuously making all the preparations to offer some basic trainings and other courses. Batang Pinoy 2014 MVP, Leyte Sport Academy Scholar, to go to US for further training T he Batang Pinoy 2014’s Most Valuabe Player Karen T. Janario of Brgy. Libertad Palo, Leyte, a sports scholar of the Leyte Sports Academy will be send to the United States of America for international training. This was disclosed recently, by Leyte provincial administrator Vincent Emnas who was in the Leyte Sports Development Center for some inspection, including the facilities of Leyte Sports Academy located inside the center. According to Emnas, the Philippine Sports Commission is responsible for this plan and the provincial government will support Janario in any way. “This is a good opportuniy for her,” said Emnas who added that the provincial government fully supports the plan to send Janario to the U.S. as this could enhance more her capability as an athlete. It will not just bring glory to the province of Leyte but to the entire country as well once

she competes in international sports event, he said. Meanwhile, Ruben Tamayo, Leyte Sports Academy Administrator in an interview with PIA Power FM said that Janario is expected to train under U.S. coach Ryan Flaherty who was commissioned by the PSC to train track and field athletes of the country who are to compete in international competition like the Asian Games this year and the 2015 Southeast Asian Games. Janario during the Batang Pinoy 2014 took home five gold medals from 200-meters run, 4x400meter relay, 110-meter hurdles, 100 meters and 4x100-meter relay. Forest fires hit several barangays in several towns of Eastern Samar T he Department of Environment and Natural Resources thru its Community Environment and Natural Resources Officer Moises dela Cruz informed that the forest fires now on its 6th day has already affected several barangays in several municipalities of E a s t e r n S a m a r a n d S a m a r. As of the afternoon of Februar y 21, the DENR reported that at least 53 hectares of forest lands have been burned in the municipalities of Giporlos, Balangiga, Salcedo, MacArthur and Quinapondan. The head of the Ta c t i c a l O p e r a t i o n G r o u p o f the Philippine Airforce, Lt. Col Fermin Carangan, texted the Philippine Information Agency in the evening of

Februar y 20, informing PIA that he intended to deploy a helicopter with firefighting capability on Februar y 21. On Februar y 21, Lt. Col Carangan called up the PIA saying that the helicopter was deployed the aerial survey showed that the fire has gutted wide areas. The chopper made several rounds of spraying in Balangiga but in the afternoon, pronounced that one chopper was no longer enough to put off the fires. The reports from his men at the area revealed that the Bureau of Fire Protection fire-trucks were on standby in case the fires will reach the residential areas. According to BFP Region 8 Director Pablito Cordeta, the fire was beyond

the capabilit y of the Agenc y, thus, he called on the Depar tment of Public Works and Highways to send heavy equipment to bulldoze the not yet affected trees so that the fire will be stopped. Meanwhile, the DENR Region 8 thru Information Officer Purificacion Daloos said the DENR Secretary Paje was supposed to come t o Ta c l o b a n y e s t e r d a y b u t was unable to do so. But he is monitoring the situation, she said. It was learned that the RDRRMC has already alerted the concerned local DRRMCs to monitor closely the situation and to conduct evacuation in case of potential threat to residential areas of the affected barangays. Leyte athletes shine despite Yolanda’s fury BY: CONSUELO B. ALARCON


o l a n d a ’s f u r y h a s n o e f f e c t on the performance of the athletes in Leyte Sports Academy-Smart despite of the huge destruction it wrought to the lives and properties in the affected areas. This was manifested in the winnings made by a number of athletes during the Batang Pinoy 2013 National Championship held in Bacolod City. Leyte Sports Academy Executive Director Ruben Ta m a y o, i n a n i n t e r v i e w o v e r P I A’s P o w e r F m s a i d , t h e f i v e (5) gold medals captured by Karen Janario in the competition is an inspiring story that embodies the determination of Yo l a n d a survivors to get back on their feet. The 5’6 Janario who is only 14 years old hails from the typhoon devastated area of Brgy. Liber tad, Palo Leyte put up a record-smashing run in the 200 meters then j o i n e d L S A’s w i n n i n g 4 x 4 0 0

m relay to cap her stint as one of the brightest stars in the 15 and under tournament and became as the Most Valuable Player (MVP) in said competition. Aside from Janario, 12 years old John Michael Saldana of LSA-Smart also won a silver medal in wrestling competition during the Batang Pinoy Championships . Relative to this, Janario is now being eyed by the Philippine Sports Commission for training in United States soon. With her commendable per formance in Bacolod City, Janario is being groomed to be the next Lydia De Vega after her potentials were seen during the Batang Pinoy Championships. (PIA-8)

n official of the Leyte Spor ts Academy (LSA) has commended the athletescholars of the training school for their laudable achievements in the recent national sports competitions. Executive Director R u b e n Ta m a y o o f t h e L e y t e Spor ts Academy has expressed appreciation to the eight(8) powerlifters who won in the 5 I n 1 N a t i o n a l Po w e r l i f t i n g Championships held at Robinsons Otis Manila early this month. Six (6) of the powerlifters captured gold medals while two got silver medals in the competition.
