The Carers Centre would like to wish all Carers and their families a happy and healthy 2018.

Pictured left is Paul and Valerie from Eastleigh Counselling Services. Paul and Janet Hatt won the Carers Bake Off with their lemon Drizzle Cake. Valerie who judged the cakes said all the cakes were delicious and it was hard to pick a winner. The Carers Bake Off, was a one off event held during the coffee morning at Wells Place.

Tuesday 10am - 12noon Wells Place Centre, Eastleigh SO50 5PP ONE OFF EVENT On February 13th, the coffee morning will be held at Eastleigh Museum from 10noon. During the visit, there will be a free interactive tour with lots of Eastleigh stories of past and present.

If this is not your cup of tea, the normal Wells Place Coffee Morning will be run by one of the team.

Support for those caring for a loved one with a drug or alcohol addiction Addiction is defined as not having control, overdoing, taking or using drugs or alcohol to the point where it could be harmful. Many family members and friends of substance user’s don’t identify themselves as actually being a carer even though the care and support that they provide is so valuable.

Some substance users can also suffer from mental heath problems (Dual Diagnosis) the combined mental health and drug or alcohol dependency can be very difficult for the carer to understand. Getting advice and information can help the carer to better manage their caring role which can then result in reducing their own personal stress and anxiety.

Carers of substance users often suffer profound feelings of shame and stigma, this then enhances their feelings of isolation. Accessing support and getting information and advice can help to remove feelings of isolation.

Adult Carers at One Community can arrange a carer's assessments via Hampshire County Council for those caring for a loved one with a drug or alcohol addiction. There is evidence that if a carer accesses support positive change can be achieved for a carer and the person they care for.

The Carers Centre and Inclusion Eastleigh are in regular contact with each other. Inclusion Recovery Eastleigh Hub provides a range of interventions for anyone aged 18 and over, using drugs and/or alcohol or experiencing any of the problems that are associated with its use and live around the Eastleigh area. To contact Inclusion please telephone 0300 124 0103 and chose option 3.

In addition to this, the Carers Centre works very closely with Eastleigh Bereavement Counselling Services. The Counsellors provide counselling for a range of issues, not just bereavement, including depression, addiction, anxiety, relationship difficulties, abuse and many other life experiences. EBS is based in central Eastleigh. All counselling sessions are on a one to one basis, prices start from ÂŁ1.00 per 50 minutes, (the cost is financially assessed based on trust with the coordinator.)

Accessing support provides families and carers with the chance to cope with the effects of a loved ones addiction.

Healios provides clinician-led online support to carers of people with mental health conditions giving skills to manage better in their caring role and support of their loved one, the time to talk, and the ability to know what to do and when to do it. Adult Carers & Community News How many times have you been asked for the same information by health and social care professionals?

The ‘Say It Once’ website has forms for you to fill in either on your computer or by hand. You can record key health, social care, Information and wishes that are important to you. Copies can then be given to health and social care professionals as needed.

When his wife was struck down by a stroke, Stuart Donnan embarked on a journey of learning to understand and manage her needs and the complex side effects of the stroke. Ten years later a further diagnosis revealed that Beryl was suffering from dementia including some aspects of Alzheimer’s disease. For anyone in a similar situation this book offers comfort and support in your own struggles with caring for stroke and dementia sufferers.

Film Afternoon The Carers Centre has been offered some tickets to see Casablanca, at AFC Totton with their big screen experience.

Film Date: 15 February 2018 Time: 2.30pm, travelling by Minibus - leaving One Community at 1.45pm and will be returning to One Community after the film.

Refreshments: Drinks, ice cream and pop corn will be provided.

Cost: Tickets are only ÂŁ2.50 per person.

The cost of the return journey to AFC Totton will depend on how many attendees, please let Naomi know by the 22 January if you would like to attend. The final transport cost will then be provided.

Training Courses with One Community Moving and Assisting People Friday 23 February 2018, 9.30am – 12.30pm This course is suitable for carers who move and assist people or for those who have a supervisory role in a care environment. The course helps to manage the risk of injury and ill health and reminds learners of the need to maintain dignity and to safeguard people.

On successful completion of the course learners will be able to: Operate within the legal boundaries with regard to the Manual Handling Regulations and the moving and assisting of people.

Carry out risk assessment (PEACE) and understand biomechanics.

Understand safe and unsafe moving and positioning techniques.

Carry out safe sitting to standing and assisted walking techniques.

Select, use and inspect equipment.

Understand the correct use of wheelchair, rotunda and electric stand aid. Understand and comply with company policy and procedure.

Cost: £55 per person.

Trigger Tool Training: Risk Awareness and Supporting Independence Tuesday 6 March 2018, 9.30am – 11.30am FREE training is being provided for anyone who has contact with vulnerable adults in the community through their professional, voluntary or carer role to help people to stay well, independent and safe in their own homes for as long as possible. With a focus on helping people to help themselves, this training introduces the Connect to Support website which offers information and a directory of services for Hampshire residents. The learning objectives of this training are to: Identify some of the risks that adults may have in their homes Feel more confident in talking to the person about these risks Know how to work with someone in a ‘strength-based’ way to ensure they are able to participate fully in their community and to support their independence Know where you can get support and advice in your local area.

The Trigger Tool pulls together in one useful document the contact details of a range of agencies and organisations that can be of use when in contact with vulnerable people.
