191 Early Childhood Family Education (ECFE)

Learn and Grow! ECFE focuses on building relationships and enriching learning experiences for families with children from birth to prekindergarten. ECFE classes and events support family growth! At ECFE, children learn and play in many ways. • Spend time with an important grownup in their life. • Have room to crawl, toddle and run. • Get messy! • Build and sort and count. • Practice being a friend. • Sing and dance. • Play make believe. • Learn about language. • Listen to stories.

What does an ECFE class look like? ECFE NonSeparating Classes A typical class for infants or toddlers and their parents is one and a half hours in length. Parents and children enjoy floor time activities, lots of interaction and an informal parenting discussion on development, expectations and other parenting issues chosen by the group. Some classes are for children birth to prekindergarten and focus on intentional play between parents and children. Parents and children do not separate for these classes.

And grown ups learn, too! Grown ups have time together with a licensed parent and family educator to talk about how children grow and develop, to discuss ideas about families and to learn skills. Grown ups learn that each family has strengths and discover what works best for their families.

ECFE Separating Classes Offered as “agespecific” or “birth to prekindergarten,” these classes are usually two hours long. First, there is parent/child time to relax and enjoy some oneonone time with your child, take his or her lead, observe his/her actions and respect your child’s activity choices.

Sliding Fee Scales The Early Childhood Family Education program uses a sliding fee scale based on family income and is intended to provide affordable fees for all families who choose to participate. This scale is intended as a guide for payment. No family is turned away because of an inability to pay. Any ISD 191 family may check the fee assistance box on the registration form and pay what they are able. Class fee is per family, per class.

Then, parents say their goodbyes and meet together in a parent room for discussion, idea sharing and support from other parents and a trained parent educator. During parent discussion, children enjoy planned and supervised play and learning activities with their peers and early childhood staff. At the end of class, parents rejoin their children to sing the goodbye song. See you next week!

1836 months

Toddler play is fascinating! In this class, we will focus on observing and learning about toddler play. You will have a chance to slow down to watch your little one play and explore, in a childfriendly environment, with children of the same age. During parentfriendly discussion time, we’ll discuss stages and types of plan, encouraging independent and prosocial play and learn simple games and toys for home use. You find something for your child – and for yourself! Jordan Sliding fee A. #E234 Mon April 1May 20 1011:30 am DEC 109

Toddlers—changing minute by minute — it’s hard to keep up with their daily needs! Two parenting strategies that support toddlers in their growth and development are establishing routines and providing consistency: time for play, time for meals, time for sleep. Participate in activities together with your toddler and enjoy an informal discussion with parents and a parent educator about transitions, separation, routines, expectations and more. Join us for this class based on the book, “Becoming the Parent You Want to Be,” by Laura Davis and Janis Keyser. After enjoying time to play and learn with your child(ren), join other parents and our parent educator in a discussion that focuses on topics from the book, including the nine principles for the parenting journey, developing your own parenting philosophy and finding effective parenting strategies for your family. At times we look to others for information and support in our parenting journey. Personalities and Temperaments

BirthPreK

Learn about yourself and your family by using different tools to assess personality characteristics such as introvert and extrovert, learning style, temperament, “love language” and more, in a low key, informal environment. The information you discover can be kept private or can be shared according to your comfort level. Through observation during parent/child activity time, you will observe variations of how people approach play. For example, watch children finger painting: some kids have paint up to their elbows while other children will not put their finger in the paint at all! Neither approach is right or wrong. The important thing is what’s right for each child. By learning about temperament and personality, you can support yourself and your child in strong relationships with one another! What Does School Readiness Mean? BirthPreK

Raising Happy, Healthy Kids

Do you worry if your children will be ready for kindergarten when the time comes? Do you wonder what they need to know before they hop on the school bus the first day? We all know that ABCs and 123s are part of school, but what else is important for a new student to know? We will talk about the academics and will also be discussing turn taking, listening, selfhelp skills, following directions and more, to help you help your child be “school ready.” The activities that promote these skills are based in fun and play, because that is the best way for young children to learn new things. Jordan

Children are learning many skills in these early years. As parents, we can teach life skills that will help our children develop into happy, healthy, productive adults. Skills such as responsibility, resolving conflict, healthy risktaking, caring for ourselves, our relationships and our homes, becoming self reliant, making good decisions, and nourishing creativity are important to our overall sense of wellbeing. After play and learning with the children, use discussion time to focus on ways to build these life skills. The group will choose topics of the most interest and use a variety of books and resources to facilitate discussion. Nina, Shari
