Freshpicked holidays It is quite obvious why Lolland-Falster is compared with Provence in Denmark. There are fruit trees everywhere, while the mild climate and rich soil guarantee fruit and vegetables in a class of their own. You see an old table by the roadside, with rough-and-ready shelves made of wooden crates. Beside a vase or two of fresh flowers is the obligatory money box. Take a close look: this is one of dozens of roadside stalls on Lolland-Falster, where the vegetables are fresh and the newly picked fruit is bursting with juice. There may be a few jars of delicious home-made jam or newly harvested honey.

Boks-Food market and fruit festival Visit the Southern Islands’ fruit festival and the great food market in Sakskøbing. In the third weekend in September the town turns into a paradise of fresh fruit and creative cooks, all competing in inventiveness.

There are just as many possibilities as roadside stalls. That means plenty. They are everywhere on Lolland-Falster and the islands, Fejø, Femø and Askø. If you are looking for something particular, go for the farm shops, where the selection is wide, and you can buy everything for a meal: chicken or beef, wine and vegetables. Not to mention something sweet for dessert. Several places let you bring the whole family and visit the animals in the stables, or see how their products are made. In the autumn the apples are ready and the juice presses are busy. Find farm shops at www.visitlolland-falster.com
