Hero lends Aether a hand

Aether’s S340 will be first smart electric scooter on Indian roads. AThER EnERGY, ThE Bengaluru-based smart electric two-wheeler startup announced a fresh round of funding of Rs 180 crore from two-wheeler major hero MotoCorp for a 26-30 percent stake. The funding marks the third round of investments in Ather Energy, which is building the S340 – India’s first smart, electric scooter. It packs a lithiumion battery pack, and has a

top speed of 72kph with a range of 60km. The funding from hero MotoCorp is likely to accelerate the commercial launch of the S340, which has been pushed to early 2017 from end-2016. Moreover, Ather might be able to leverage the country’s largest twowheeler maker’s expertise in domains like marketing and supply post launch of the scooter.

the popularity of the old Bonneville in these circles, Triumph has just launched

BIKE NEWS its own Bobber based on the latest-generation T120 Bonnie. It shares most of its frame and front suspension with the T120, but Triumph has engineered an entirely new cage-type swingarm and a neatly-hidden monoshock rear suspension to mimic a hardtail look. The floating single seat not only allows riders to slide it forward or backwards as required, but the entire rail on which it is mounted can be tilted up or down, for a customised riding position. Since the hT (high torque) spec 1,200cc parallel-twin motor has been borrowed from the T120, this Bonneville Bobber makes 80hp of peak power and 105nm of peak torque. The slick shifting six-speed gearbox has been maintained

as has been the ride-by-wire throttle and riding modes. To ensure that the Bobber gets its own unique sound, Triumph has developed a new twin-airbox system with two separate filters and a unique intake system. The exhaust system has been redesigned as well, and the bike gets brushed stainless-steel, twinskin exhausts with ‘slashcut’ sawn-off peashooter silencers. The Bobber rides on bespoke Avon Cobra tyres with a 19-inch front wheel and a 16-inch rear, and will be available with a variety of custom parts, including ape-hanger handlebars. While Triumph hasn’t officially announced whether this bike will be coming to India, we suspect it should hit Indian shores sometime early next year.

bmw’s vision of The fuTure

The BMW Group has now revealed its next progressive solution for the world of motorcycling: the BMW Motorrad Vision Next 100. Design includes a black frame triangle, white lines and classic, boxer engine forms. The bike has a compact zero-emissions drive unit that extends outwards only when the bike sets off, to enhance aerodynamics and protect the rider from the elements. Its unique Flexiframe allows the bike to be steered without the various joints found on today’s motorcycles. It has an active self-balancing system that keeps the bike upright at a standstill, yet delivers an agile, dynamic riding experience. BMW says, this makes the bike uncrashable, negating the need for protective gear such as a helmet. Instead, riders will wear a pair of data glasses that use eye gestures to bring up relevant information.
