ALEXA I S BAC K

Yes, Look's bagged you an exclusive preview of Archive by Alexa for M&S… and we've even trialled it on real women's bods too! Head on in for Look's – and Alexa's – very fash' verdict… Maxine eggenBerger, Fashion news editor ‘I’ve been waiting for this coat for what feels like forever. And now that it’s here, I’m not disappointed. I thought it might be hard to wear, seeing as it’s vinyl, but the midi length and waist belt make it very flattering. It’s the perfect way to jazz up jeans, and it’s ideal for our British downpours!’ Wellington jumper, £35 Clarendon tux, £59

S

alexa shows off her Crown jacket

he’s the girl who launched a thousand copycats (and then some) and went from T4 to haute couture. She’s Alexa Chung, and her second collection for M&S has finally arrived. Alexa’s first foray into the Marks and Spencer archive produced piecrust collar blouses, classic trench coats and Chelsea boots. It also created a suitable amount of hysteria (largely within the Look office, granted) and some rather frantic trips to our local M&S. Thus, when news broke of a second instalment, the palpitations began once again. Gone are the cardigans and ballet flats from round one and, in their place, heaps of velvet, lashings of leopard print, satin shirts and polka dot frocks. While the Victoriana blouse sold out within the first day back in April, this season’s stand-out buy looks to be the vinyl coat, debuted by Alexa herself at LFW. There’s also the fluffy, zip-up jacket that appeared on her Insta a few weeks ago, not to mention velvet suits, perfect V-neck knits and check overcoats. In fact, we were so excited about this collection that we decided to try it out, just so we could bring you our verdict. SPOILER ALERT! We all really liked it. @lookmagazine

Carolina nunes, Videographer ‘I pretty much live in my jeans so I’m always on the hunt for statement tops that instantly add interest to my outfit. This blue blouse definitely does that; I like that the ruffle detail is quite subtle, as I don’t like wearing anything too out there. I didn’t actually get anything from Alexa’s first range, but I’ll definitely be getting this!’ lookmagazine

Whip the frilly knit off and it’ll whisk you from Christmas party to spring ’17…’ Calverley dress, £49.50, archive by alexa at marks & spencer Jumper, £55, & other stories Gilly: size 8, 5ft 6in

Gabrielle dyer, beauty Writer ‘I’ve just found my dream dress. Velvet is such a massive trend this season and this mini feels so easy to wear. I could wear it with tights and flats during the day and then do bare legs and heels (if I’m feeling brave!) to really dress it up.’ 10

Currently the most-sold shade on ASOS, oxblood wins the official title of autumn’s hottest hue. Not quite dark red, not quite purple, it’s a rich, elegant tone that suits everyone. Providing a fresh alternative to wrapping up in all black everything, it will go perfectly with every colour in your cold weather wardrobe – from dark-wash denim to khaki and leopard print. Best of all, the high street is stacked full of the stuff. Tick off two trends in one with ASOS’s velvet frock (THE best seller at the moment) or up your shoe game with Topshop's perfect platforms. You could even give your home an autumnal update with Habitat’s arty vase. See? It's true: we're all oxblood obsessives.

B U RC h rBi s tEm aRs . . .RY Lily james stars as a recordbreaking aviator

The breathless excitement of every festive period has only been increased by the annual addition of major Christmas campaigns, and boy have Burberry set the bar high! This year, the British label takes us travelling through time, via a cast of some of our brightest stars. by hannah banks-walker @hbankswalker

Chivalry never goes out of style...

Sienna Miller delights as Thomas Burberry’s love interest

Y

ou’ll be pushed to find a more show-stopping cinematic offering this year than Burberry’s Christmas campaign. To celebrate its 160th anniversary, the label has rounded up Hollywood’s finest in the Tale of Thomas Burberry (played by Domhnall Gleeson). From outfitting explorers (Dominic West) to record-breaking aviators (Lily James), it proves how innovative Burberry was from the start. Throw in Sienna Miller and a soundtrack by Lawless and we’re wishing this film was feature length.

The Best Of The Rest It’s not just Burberry conquering Christmas - the high street has its own festive offerings, too. And judging by these campaigns from last year, we can expect big things from John Lewis, M&S and Sainsbury’s… @lookmagazine

WORDS: HannaH BankS-WalkeR

W

e’ve seen a lot of outlandish trends begin life on Instagram, from huge, oversized ruffles – on just about everything – to wearing shirts back to front (true story). Naturally, we happily embrace whatever the Instafamous girls throw at us but sometimes it’s nice when the latest trend to go viral happens to be comfy, practical and oh-so easy to wear. Et voila: Ganni’s pink, cable-knit jumper. You probably recognise it; you’ve seen it on your Insta-feed. Alexa Chung wore the cardigan version earlier this year, creating some sort of domino effect with trendsetters everywhere posting their own pics of this knockout knit. Worn with jeans, mules and a crossbody bag, it instantly creates an outfit so perfect, you’ll feel like a street style star. Plus, the candy colour really does suit everyone. At £280, it’s a hefty investment for your winter knit but it’s super luxe and famous, to boot. However, good luck finding one out there: they’re being snapped up faster than the hottest cakes, with many stockists selling out as soon as the jumper hits shelves. You don’t have to miss out, though: the high street has some excellent homages of its own. Just don’t forget us when you’re a social media star. @lookmagazine

hen Jennifer Lawrence was spotted sneaking into a car with Darren Aronofsky after dinner at the Line Hotel’s Commissary restaurant in Los Angeles last week, speculation grew about whether there’s more than just food on the menu between the actress and the Hollywood director. The 26-year-old previously dated comedian Aziz Ansari, 33, and Coldplay frontman Chris Martin, 39 – and Aronofsky, 47, who worked with J-Law this summer on his as-yet-untitled project, is 21 years her senior. But it’s rumoured that not everyone is happy to see Jen, who is 2016’s highest paid actress, move on from her last high-profile romance. ‘Jen’s happy,’ a long-time pal tells Look. ‘I think some of her exes are pretty surprised. But it’s fair to say that Jen really seems to have been swept off her feet.’ The pal continues: ‘Darren’s totally rocking her world right now and he’s so unlike the guys she’s been dating.’ It’s not yet known how long the pair are said to have been getting close as J-Law has kept a low profile in 2016, covering her face on numerous occasions throughout April and May this year when she stepped out in New York – the city where Darren is also based – and throwing herself into work projects. The rumour mill surrounding her latest ‘beau’ kicked off earlier this month when an Instagram photo surfaced, showing the pair brunching at Mexican restaurant La Palapa in New York’s East Village on 7 August 2016. And Look can reveal that just days later – said to be during the final stages of filming Darren’s secret project, which is set for a December 2017 release – Jen looked besotted with the award-winning Black Swan director as they chatted at her 26th birthday party in Vancouver, Canada, alongside her co-star Javier Bardem and his wife, Penelope Cruz. Darren and J-Law came close to working together back in 2014 on the set of her American-French drama Serena, which he was originally supposed to direct. But he was replaced and she roped in her mate Bradley Cooper to star opposite her. Likewise, Darren missed out on @lookmagazine

the opportunity to direct upcoming romantic drama It’s What I Do in which Jen plays a war photographer. He also turned down the chance of directing thriller Red Sparrow in which she is set to play a Russian spy who seduces a CIA agent – so this new project is the first one on which they’ve really had the chance to work together. Obviously it’s not the first time J-Law has had an on-screen/off-screen romance. In 2010 she began dating X-Men: First J-Law and Darren were spotted Class co-star Nicholas brunching in NYC Hoult. They briefly split in 2013 before reuniting both off and on-screen in X-Men: Days Of Future Past, but ended their relationship in August 2014. At the time, it was Jen who seemed to want her ex back, admitting she felt ‘lost’ after they ended things. ‘I was in a relationship with somebody for five years and that was my life,’ she said last year. ‘So my life was this person and these movies and we broke up around the same time that I wrapped those movies. Being 24 was this whole year of: “Who am I without these movies? Who am I without this man?”’ This year, Jen’s dealt with a huge backlash from the industry with several branding her ‘arrogant’ and ‘rude’ after the way she shut down a reporter in January 2016 for using his phone during a press conference with the actress. Then her close and public friendship with comedian Amy Schumer seemed to wane after the pair reportedly couldn’t commit to filming dates for a project they hoped to work on together. However, Nicholas and Jen apparently stayed in touch and he’s been a huge support to her. The pair were spotted chatting at the 2016 Golden Globe Awards in January, sparking rumours of a rekindled romance. ‘I think Nick had come round to the idea of wanting something more recently,’ says our insider. ‘But Jen’s very happy with Jen with ex Nick at this year’s the situation now. She Golden Globes doesn’t feel like she’s betrayed these guys – she’s

just moved on to the next stage, and who can blame her?’ It comes after the star openly spoke about her love life back in November 2015, where she admitted: ‘No one ever asks me out. I am lonely every Saturday night. Guys are so mean to me.’ She also shared: ‘I’m just a girl who wants you to be nice to me. I am straight as an arrow. I feel like I need to meet a guy, with all due respect, who has been living in Baghdad for five years who has no idea who I am.’ But she didn’t rule out marriage, adding: ‘If I find that one person who I want to spend the rest of my life with, who I want to be the father of my children, I would absolutely not f**k it up.’ Maybe Darren could be that guy. We can’t help but think that Jen deserves some happiness…

Liam lingers over his freedom as commitment looms…

hen news of Liam Payne’s secret track Something That Scares Me About Love – written with his 1D pal Louis Tomlinson – broke last week, fans went into overdrive, thinking Liam might release it. It’s hard to imagine 23-year-old Liam would be scared about love, especially when he’s dating beautiful Cheryl, who’s rumoured to be pregnant with his child. But when he was spotted partying at Las Vegas’ Intrigue nightclub until the early hours of 23 October with pal DJ Zedd, settling down seemed to be the last thing on his mind. ‘Liam’s been enjoying his time in America,’ a source tells Look. ‘He’s been partying hard to push any worries to the back of his mind.’ Liam rounded off what Cheryl at her had been a roller-coaster perfume launch wearing Rachel Zoe of a week for him and

Cheryl – as Look revealed last week, she was finally granted a divorce from Jean-Bernard Fernandez-Versini on 20 October in just 14 seconds, following an 18-month marriage. But while Liam was living it up Stateside, Chezza, 33, was throwing herself into her work, attending Liam posted this the launch of her perfume. She message after his also had her Instagram account big night in Vegas hacked with ‘satanic’ posts throwing shade at Liam, while it was rumoured a recording of her and JB rowing could soon surface. And as the fallout from Cheryl’s marriage split continues, Liam is said to be ‘shocked’. An insider tells us: ‘He had expected it to be all sorted out last week, but the drama is ongoing.’ Liam, who confirmed he was dating Cheryl in February, did however post a romantic phrase to his Instagram account last Tuesday, which read: ‘The only lie I ever told you is that I liked you when I already knew I loved you.’

Chezza will find the move reassuring, but as she’s been dealing with the divorce and working, and no doubt she’d love to be with Liam partying. That will sit well with Liam. ‘He always said he couldn’t be in a relationship with someone who gets jealous easily,’ says our source. Speaking about his ex Danielle Peazer in 2012, he said: ‘she doesn’t get jealous, which is obviously key.’ It’s no secret Liam has a habit of letting off steam when he’s away from home. In 2013, he admitted he got drunk in the studio while recording with singer Miguel, saying: ‘Let’s just say I haven’t been keeping up the Gary Barlow persona, I’ve let loose in the sense that I haven’t got that much to worry about any more.’ As pace gathers for the couple to wed, in a video tweeted by DJ Zedd, Liam can be seen singing along to the words ‘I’m going to marry her anyway’ as Magic!’s hit Rude plays out to the packed club. Hmmm… sounds like a subtle jibe to the ‘Chiam’ haters!

ight months have passed since Millie Mackintosh and Professor Green announced their amicable split. But while the model has moved on from her ex, with her former flame Hugo Taylor, her ex-husband hasn’t. Pro Green – real name Stephen Manderson – seemed to take a swipe at his ex-wife’s new beau Hugo on 23 October, when he tweeted: ‘I know you sh*gged her, but luckily for you, she did not notice.’ Harsh. It remains to be seen whether his latest Twitter swipe is a lyric taken from his new single but we found the quote appears in 2015 TV drama Banished – it’s a quip from a male prisoner to a soldier who’d just extorted sex from a female convict. The post came just 24 hours after Millie posted more amorous snaps

Speaking about her new love back in June, Millie said: ‘I’m very happy, that’s all I can say.’ In recent weeks, while Millie has been loved-up attending friend’s

n a world dominated by Instagram likes and pictures of Kim Kardashian’s bum, it’s no surprise that narcissism is on the increase. Defined as ‘an excessive interest and admiration for oneself,’ it’s usually associated with arrogance. Despite its bad rep, career experts say that singing your own praises can pay off in a work environment – and there’s plenty of successful women to prove it. From Taylor Swift to Millie Mackintosh, the idea of selling your brand and standing out from the crowd has never been more acceptable. But how to get there? Erik Vilaca, head of business development at recruitment firm, Sales Point, believes a bit of narcissism is essential for getting you noticed at work. ‘You need to value yourself before other people will,’ he explains. ‘In my job, I’ve generally found that women are less confident when it comes to promoting themselves – and that’s one reason why men find it easier to get ahead. Women often have the same skills but they don’t always sell themselves as much.’ As budgets are tightened it’s

harder for employees thrive. ‘You need to sit down with your manager and explain what you’ve done and why you’ve done it well. In a busy office it’s rare that someone will just pick up on how great you are and automatically give you a pay rise,’ says Vilaca.

Yo u n e e d to value yourself before other people will

The issue of ConfidenCe

Charlie Christie, 27, an account executive for a reward and recognition company, admits she finds it hard to put herself out there – despite positive feedback from managers. ‘When a chance to apply for a more advanced role came up recently I just bottled it. It’s harder to apply for an internal role, because people already know you. What if they thought I was deluded in my own abilities? On the other hand I’d hate them to think I was arrogant or big-headed.’ According to Vilaca, it’s a common fear – especially for women. ‘It’s a shame, but women are often afraid to be viewed as ballsy, in case people think they’re too bolshy or aggressive. This stereotype doesn’t exist for men – lookmag

they’re just seen as assertive.’ For Charlie, the fear is amplified in networking situations. ‘At office Christmas parties, the more confident employees flock to the senior people. I don’t feel comfortable doing this in case I look fake,’ she says. ‘But people who sell themselves are the ones who end up landing opportunities. I know I need to push myself more if I’m going to move forward and be noticed as an ambitious employee.’

Man uP Other women say that acting like a man helps drive their confidence. Katie Deighton, 24, a video reporter and researcher, says she adopted a ‘fake it ’til you make it’ attitude after reading an article about the confidence gap between men and women. ‘I suppose you have to be a bit of a narcissist to get on camera and present a video. After years of pushing myself out of my comfort zone I’ve become genuinely confident in my abilities.’ In her last role Katie gained a promotion after clearly outlining why she deserved one. ‘I’d worked hard and achieved success, so I had to prove that. If I hadn’t had the confidence to sell myself, I wouldn’t have been promoted.’ Sometimes, developing a slightly narcissistic attitude is necessary. Sharol Azzi, a products assistant for a law firm says that in her male dominated office, she has to overcompensate with confidence to get her voice heard. ‘To get my job I talked about multi-million pound deals that I’d worked on to prove my experience was equal to theirs.’

PuTTinG YouRseLf ouT TheRe All too often the stigma of a me-centric attitude prevents women from shouting about their achievements. ‘If you put yourself down, even in a jokey way, that negativity will be picked up. Leaders look for confidence’ says Vilaca. Life and careers coach Susan Grossman believes confidence can be hard, particularly for women who’ve taken career breaks or maternity leave. ‘I’d advise anyone who’s feeling unsure about applying for a role to list the things they’ve done that meet the job specification. You may end up surprising yourself!’ @lookmagazine

The model is back on our radar with a huge new high street campaign. We sat down with the most positive woman we’ve ever met… WORDS: HannaH BankS-WalkeR

‘I

’m a little bit tired,’ Iskra Lawrence admits when we meet. She’s just flown in from New York, and her delayed flight meant she had to go straight to her Simply Be campaign shoot – but it’s no sweat for a pro like 26-year-old Iskra. Instagram legend and champion of the curve movement, she’s a body confidence campaigner and a role model for girls everywhere. As well as being Simply Be’s latest lady alongside American blogger Gabi Fresh, she’s currently travelling around schools trying to promote a healthy body image ‘because I didn’t have that growing up and it’s so important’. See why we love her?

Hi Iskra, congrats on your appearance at New York Fashion Week! How was it to walk there for the first time? There were transgender women there and women of different races, heights and sizes, and I’m just looking at them all and thinking, ‘I don’t need to look like anybody else, they all look so beautiful because they’re different and that’s what’s nice.’ We’re all beautiful in our own way, and that’s what I loved about the show so much. I think there are so many more brands doing things like that in New York. I’m excited. Hopefully London will catch up. You and Gabi are the new faces of Simply Be. Can you tell us how that came about? I’ve been modelling in the Simply Be catalogues and I think they just saw how much I love the brand. I really believe in it – the fact that, yes, you can dress trendy, you can dress cool, you can dress feminine. There are all these different styles that you can find that don’t make you feel like you’re segregated – you’re part of fashion and it doesn’t matter what size you are. How do you feel about the term ‘plus-sized’? I think it’s such an individual thing.

ISKRA LAWRENCE INTERVIEW Some people love the fact that they have a label they feel they can put their stamp on and own. I love that I’m seeing more women of diverse size and, if that’s what pushes it forward, then let’s do it. It’s all about trying to make it more inclusive and making fashion accessible for every woman. How do you both feel about modelling in general? NYFW was blasted for using models deemed too thin… I think modelling is a wonderful way to express yourself. It’s sad any size gets shamed. A certain size doesn’t mean health. I am so grateful, even though I thought initially that my relationship with the fashion industry was negative in the sense that it pushed me to want to lose weight, it actually meant I was able to really find myself, build myself from the ground up and realise that I was so much more than an appearance or an image. Jacket, £45 Body, £36 both Simply Be

Gabi Fresh, Iskra’s Simply Be buddy

How did you build up your self- esteem? It took a very long time, from when I was 15 to nearly 20. As a teenager your body is changing so you’re just figuring out who you are. When I figured out that I could be more than [just an image] and brand myself and become a strong, confident woman – that’s why I made it. It had nothing to do with size or shape. Why do you think the media and society in general are still so obsessed with women’s bodies? There’s been the illusion that you have to have the perfect body, which for so long has been presented as tall, slim and white. It’s about re-educating all those people, and luckily we’ve had the chance to use our voices to do that and say: ‘No, the goals, the aspirations should be just embracing and being happy with what you have, and understanding that you can’t be perfect because perfect doesn’t exist.’ Changing that conversation – and that’s what’s happening – is so important, and it’s great to be a part of it. Speaking of body shaming, have you experienced a lot of it? Yeah. I got over my own demons and I’ve battled myself in the mirror, so really, I’m my toughest enemy and I’ve managed to get over that. Do you find that it’s mainly women, or men, or a mix? For me, it’s mainly men. I can’t remember the last time I got a negative comment from a woman. Men, when they look on social media, they get stuck on the image and they don’t understand or don’t

read the captions. They think I’m posing in a bikini for them, to get their attention. Whose style inspires you? Solange [Knowles]! But I look for inspiration from my friends, the people around me. In New York, there are so many people I’ll stop and ask: ‘Where’s that from?’ It’s so nice on social media to see girls with similar shapes. You are a role model to so many girls now. Do you see yourself as one? Yeah, the feedback is incredible, it’s what keeps you going. I got my bedside table specially designed to keep all my letters in there. If you’re having a down day or anything, you can go in there and read it and it’s all OK, it’s what I’m meant to be doing, I’m so grateful. I don’t want to see Photoshopped images of myself any more, I don’t want to change – I just want to be me and I want to feel beautiful doing that. I want to be able to model being healthy, and that’s the number one thing.

Protect your pins the stylish way by investing in a pair of OKT boots. OK, we get it, they look super-daunting, but styling ops go way beyond mini skirts. Whether you opt for heels or flats, simply follow our foolproof styling guide to spare yourself dropped jaws from colleagues/ your nan/the Starbucks barista.

Rock them over skinny jeans or fitted trews for a streamlined silhouette. Layer them under midi skirts or dresses for double-layer coverage. If you’re brave enough to flash some thigh, balance out the skin on show with a longline duster coat.

STAy WArm STrIdES From Valentino to Rochas, if the AW16 shows had one common thread, it was velvet. Since then, the high street’s gone cray cray for the texture, splashing it on everything from dresses to coats. However, the most wearable way to get in on the action has to be via trousers. Thicker than most fabrics, these wardrobe hero strides will keep you warm all season long. Wear with a logo tee, biker jacket and Stan Smiths when you’re off duty, then with a slinky satin top and killer heels after dark. Is there a better way to make a statement this autumn? We think not.

We’ve got a bit of a love/hate relationship with the 1970s. on the one hand, it gave us Studio 54 and all the glam fashion that came with. on the other, the decade resulted in copious amounts of cord and an unadulterated need to colour everything an unsightly shade of burnt orange or brown. However, thanks to a very selective edit on the high street’s part, we’re able to invite the best bits of the (often questionable) 70s back into our homes. From plush armchairs and walnut nesting tables to colourful ceramics and dazzling drink sets, it’s time to get retrospective.

It’s where all the celebs stay, thanks to its incredible interiors by the infamous Philippe Starck and the Nobu restaurant. Get a peek inside by sipping classic cocktails at the bar and look out for regulars Rihanna and Justin Bieber. We even spotted Olivia Palermo during our visit! lookmag

Oh My Cod!

It’s a national favourite and we’re confident this is the tastiest fish and chip recipe you’ll ever try…

IngredIenTs: For The TArTAre sAuce ● 400g mayonnaise (we used Heinz)● 3 tbsp finely sliced chives ● 3 tbsp finely chopped tarragon● 4 tbsp finely chopped parsley ● 2 tbsp finely chopped dill ● 2 banana shallots (peeled, tailed and finely diced)● 3 gherkins (finely diced) ● 3 tbsp capers (finely chopped) ● Juice of 1 lemon● 1 tsp dijon mustard ● 3 tbsp white wine vinegar For The Beer BATTer ● 250g plain flour ● 300ml ale ● pinch of salt ● 4 x 200g fillets of cod ● 5g plain flour Preheat deep fat fryer to 10c. For the tartare sauce, mix all the ingredients in a mixing bowl, then season. For the beer batter, in a mixing bowl place the plain flour, gradually whisk in the ale until it makes a smooth batter and finish with a pinch of salt. For the fish, in a baking dish place the plain flour and coat the fish so all of it is covered. dip the fish into the beer batter and shake off any excess. Fry for 5- mins until golden brown and crispy. season with sea salt and serve straight away with a good serving of tartare sauce.

Good Girls Revolt, Amazon Prime Amazon’s latest original series from TriStar TV and Amazon Studios is based on a real-life tale about women of Newsweek in the late 1960s. They sued Newsweek — and won. Total girl power. n All 10 episodes of the first season are available on Amazon Prime Video now.

MT V eMa s It’s that time again for the annual Europe Music Awards. This year they are held in Rotterdam and hosted by Bebe Rexha. If you waTch one ThIng ThIs week, Make IT…

An explosive documentary on controversial presidential candidate Donald Trump will be released in cinemas across the UK before he goes head-to-head with Hillary Clinton for the last time in the American election on 8 November. Montrose Pictures director Anthony Baxter set up a kick-starter to raise $75,000 to bring the film to millions of American voters – either on television or online – using the cash raised for distribution, publicity and legal costs. Filmed over the last 12 months, during the STREAM most contentious American presidential election campaign in history, it explores the growing confrontation between a feisty 92year-old Scottish widow, her family and billionaire Trump seeking to become the most powerful man in the world, and the consequences of his actions. It also stars Michael Forbes. n More info at trumpedfilm.com

WORTh STREAM The hYPe: The Crown Move over downton Abbey! The build-up to this has been ridiculous, but we can tell you this budget-busting £100m series from Netflix is worth it. The show follows Queen Elizabeth ii from her wedding day throughout her reign and explores the relationship between No.10 downing Street and Buckingham Palace. We’re hooked on its glossy style and killer cast. Here’s who and what you should know. obsessed wITh. . . Claire Foy as Queen Elizabeth. She’s prim, proper and oh-so elegant. You’ll recognise her from: 2015’s Wolf Hall – clearly Claire suits period dramas. crushIng on. . . Matt Smith as a young Prince Philip. You’ll recognise him from: Dr Who and fancying him for ages… loVIng. . . Vanessa Kirby as the beautiful (and wayward) Princess Margaret. You’ll recognise her from: Me Before You, where she played Will’s ex-girlfriend Alicia. n The Crown arrives on Netflix, 4 November
