THE

MOTHER …

‘Mothering’ feels particularly poignant, personally and collectively; and it is not gender specific. This year, more than ever before, we all require mothering. It has been a hard year between Covid-19, politics, mental health and social issues. Social distancing and forced selfintimacy has brought forward all kinds of reflections and emotions for many. Most importantly, it has been a time to be with the child... the inner child, our own children and those who will be born into the effects of this time. Equally, it is time for the Mother to care for herself more deeply. A child cannot be mentioned without synonymously mentioning the Mother. But, just as women have to fight for the right to be seen, heard, acknowledged and valued... the Mother has also been cast aside, forgotten and dismissed. Society must honor the Mother. We must learn how to re-Mother ourselves, and how to lean into the Divine Mother's wise and loving arms. This means feeling, addressing and holding close what has not been held or felt.

As we consider the mother, it is necessary to rekindle belonging to Gaia, the earth mother. We are all part of this sacred ecosystem. Our collective experience has led to isolation, aloneness and fear this year... We are reminded to care... to love ... and to have compassion. The choice now is in how we deal with these issues and move forward. We cannot take care of anything in the outside world, unless we learn to take care of ourselves. This means becoming tender, gentle, caring Mothers. It also means cultivating strong, disciplined, fierce Mother advocacy. This movement begins with self... flows to our children... and then must ripple toward our earth. We cannot save anyone else... but we can model what being in gentle, fierce advocacy looks like. ReTurning to the Mother of Us All When I was first introduced to Jennifer Berezan’s recording, “Returning”, I never stopped playing it for days. The hauntingly beautiful invitation extended to us by Jennifer and the chorus of women with her to join with all the energies of “Mother” in nature became my anthem, my mantra day and night. This was some decades ago when I was learning to re-mother myself in order to heal from the pain of “not being truly mothered” by Anna, my mother, who was 17 when I was born, unwed, dropping out of high school, and deeply afraid and ashamed. A half century of my life was spent in regrets, blame, anger, resentment, unforgiveness for what I considered the misfortune of my being born of this mother. Why wasn’t Ruth, my maternal grandmother who raised us both until my mother was 21 and married my sibling’s dad, not my real mother? She was so warm, loving, affectionate, attentive, affirming! And, she was married to my grandfather who adored me. Since healing myself and sharing healing support with others is my life’s calling, the calling for me to heal myself completely of my mother wound has been my greatest inspiration. I refused to accept my mother as a woman who was so deeply afraid of life and of me, her oldest, incomprehensible daughter. She had no tools to deal with her fear, her shame, her confusion about why I was how I was, her disdain of innocent affection, her desire to be a loving mother and a party-girl at the same time. After many hours of therapy and metaphysical studies I practiced concepts of acceptance and forgiveness while true acceptance and forgiveness struggled with sinking deep into my body. Driven by the painful memories of growing up Anna’s daughter, I was committed to making sure that my own daughters never experienced the void of mothering that I carried. Of course, my mothering meant doing all the right things that we learned in the early 70s about loving parenting…natural birth, breastfeeding until the child determines the time of weaning, cloth diapers, baby food made from dinner and with a food mill, baby-wearing, holding our children and reading and talking to them, etc. I even defended my right to the feminists to give up my job to stay home with my children and be their first teachers. 6

Even though I so loved being a mom, so much of my behavior was to underline the evidence of Anna’s shortcomings. In the early 90s my spiritual and energy teacher opened me to the knowing that we have a mother who is our Divine ever-present, everloving, ever-accepting, ever-nurturing Mother… Gaia, the Mother Earth! I was taught to honor the rotations of cycles of the Earth and celebrate their relevance to our bodies and souls. She taught me to ground and connect my feet, legs and bottom to the ground, trees, water. I began to feel Her vibration in my feet first and eventually throughout my whole body. This blessing was such a celebration for me who had been living constricted by my own form of fear and shame of not being enough. Going to nature and consciously connecting my being with Her Being was becoming a daily practice. In order to be even more connected I moved from city living to places that offered me more access to the Earth Mother.

My relationship with the Earth became more intimate. I would spend more time sitting or lying on the ground to be in closer connection with the energy that was becoming so necessary for my emotional balance. Spending hours sitting and reading, meditating, gardening, walking, praying, honoring the four directions became regular practices. Then the time came when I would drop my whole body to the earth to give Her my grief, my heartache, my confusion, my needs, my joys, my gratitudes. I realized that she was The Mother, the mother that I had been looking for, been yearning for, been searching for my whole life. She received whatever I brought to ‘Her’ with a deep, enormous embrace and total acceptance. She returned my human judgements and confusion with a vibration of love that radiated throughout my whole being. As my studies of energy work and my understanding of chi energy as life-force, primal healing energy grew, I breathed deep into ‘Her’ heart to receive the abundance of life energy that I needed to sustain me. As this deepening intimacy grew I was able to free my mother from the clutch of the pain that lived in my heart and cells. Anna became the mother for whom I was deeply grateful. She was the mother who had agreed to conceive me with great passion and give me the home of her womb in which to gestate. My gratitude to her for being the sand in the oyster shell that forced me to grow to become a pearl. www.1111mag.com

THE ENTITY KNOWN AS …

NURTURE

I am hidden within your hard work... your effort, exhaustion and tedious ways. I am beneath your self betrayal, too little sleep, the lack of attention to how you eat… the way you ignore yourself, and give in to too much stress. I am in all of the busyness that keeps you distracted and restless. I am in the worry, pleasing and martyrdom that has you giving more and more; and then some.

I am the moment you stop, the pondering of ‘why', and the questions of 'why not'. I am in the pause... of each impulse, reaction and cause. I am the tapping within your mind, of ‘enough is enough’; and ‘when will be the right time’. I am the reason to say no, instead of following your addiction to go, go and go.

I am the the gentleness that spreads upon you when you pause to rest. I am feel good food, that relaxing bath, and when you love yourself. I am the 'yes' of inner truth. with the deep knowing of you. I am the mothering instinct within to not only care, but to care for you too. —Simran www.1111mag.com

Restoring… the Role of Mothers in Spirituality Healing Our Mother Wounds One morning, when I was 10 years old, I awoke in my parents’ bed. My mother was standing in the doorway, holding a letter, with tears streaming down her cheeks. She had returned from an overnight shift as an EMT to learn that my father had left us. Our life changed irrevocably after that. Raising three children as a single mother was difficult. We made it even harder when she started dating my future stepfather and we didn’t welcome him; we had learned to survive without a father, but not without a mother. I still marvel at my mother’s strength and resilience. Like so many mothers, she found a way to keep our family going. Despite our closeness, my relationship with my mother has also been a source of pain. I’m hardly alone. As an intuitive, I have worked with clients whose mothers did not want them, whose mothers suffered from addiction, and whose mothers behaved like children and forced their children to parent them instead. As a conscious channel, my guides, The Council, have spoken about the importance of our mothers in Bending Time:

Your goal, your purpose in waking up, is to address how you relate to your mother. That is why so many of you joke that you can be enlightened, except around your mother. Begin by seeing exactly where you feel pain, exactly where you feel that your mother doesn’t love you or what the requirements are for love. Then, see where else in your life you have replicated those requirements, attaching them as conditions to all those around you, to your work, friendships, partners, husbands, wives, children, and everything? It all comes back to your mother. Our mothers play a tremendous karmic role in our lives. Our souls choose our mothers for a purpose. My mother had me at a very early age, and my arrival essentially derailed her life plans. Throughout my life, despite enormous amounts of love from my mother and her commitment to me and my siblings, I carried with me a sense that my mother hadn’t really wanted me. 10

11:11 — DECEMBER 2020 — DIVINE MOTHERING

www.1111mag.com

After many years of inner work, I released this pain, this deep sense that I wasn’t wanted, and when I did, I realized how much it had shaped my relationship to life. When I confessed to my mother that I had uprooted this deeply embedded belief, she broke down in tears, admitting that when she got pregnant with me, she didn’t know that she could handle me because she was so young. I carried a version of that belief in my body when I entered this world.

Healing Our Treatment of Mothers Given that mothers play such a deep role in our lives, it is surprising how little spiritual wisdom focuses on helping mothers raise children. What if my mother had had material and emotional support? What if she didn’t have to feel that having me was overwhelming? What if she understood the karmic reasons she had me as a young mother? We idealize the role of mothers, but our society offers so little support in proportion to the work that motherhood entails. Spiritual wisdom can develop that support by foregrounding the importance of mothers in our lives. It can create spaces—in yoga, meditation, and other kinds of practices—to allow mothers freedom to express their worries and frustrations free from judgment that mothers are not supposed to have such feelings. Spirituality can also provide support by showing mothers how to trust their instincts, teaching them the deep wisdom of generations of mothers, working through the generational trauma from their lineage, and helping them to understand the karmic connection between mother and child.

Healing the Mother Identity Another way that spirituality can support mothers is by moving beyond the “identity” of mother that we have created. We’ve made motherhood into a monolith. How many mothers shelve parts of themselves once they become a mother, storing away dreams, desires, and ways of expressing their being because they don’t quite conform to some idealized model of motherhood? We can also expand our concept of motherhood to allow for experiences and ways of being that don’t fit a rigid mold to be expressed. That must include a sensitivity to the specific kinds of issues that mothers of different races and sexual orientations face when raising their children. This is no doubt a controversial point for some, but the role of mothering is also not unique to women. Cis-women who give birth have a unique physical connection with their child. But embracing the idea that all human beings can mother, whether they give birth or adopt, need not diminish the support we need to give to women who do give birth. www.1111mag.com

Mothers Are Agents of Awakening Mothers are fundamental for the creation of a new era of humanity. Our mothers teach us either to be in touch with or to suppress our emotions. They teach us compassion and unconditional love, or their absence. Mothers who are awakened and healing their own patterns can help raise a new generation of conscious, awakened children who know they matter regardless of gender, race, sexual orientation or any other category of identity that carves our world into caste. If we don’t, we will forever be trapped by our current consciousness and ways of seeking change, in which each generation suffers until they can no longer bear their pain, awakens to the truth of their divine being, and then seeks wholeness in the light of divine wisdom. That is our collective pattern now. Another possibility, a more enlightened world, is available if we empower the mothers who can make it reality. The Suffering Child You have to be the author of your own guidebook to mothering a suffering child— your suffering child. How are you going to do that? When you first put on your mother shoes—biological, adoptive, foster, grand, or any other version—you can’t help but feel waves of trepidation. Relentless questions suddenly surround you: How will we live? Can I do this? Am I ready? This is great preparation, because mothers have to learn to walk in paradox, holding joy and possibility in one hand, doubt and worry in the other. But then, you see that face, those eyes, asking you—you—for sustenance, for life itself. And with those eyes come feelings you didn’t know existed. You thought you knew what love was. But this? What is it? Is it wonder? Is it awe? Whatever it is, it’s a sacred level of surrender you haven’t experienced. And it’s intense. A great surprise is that you feel these feelings not in your heart but in every cell of your body. Your body is showing you how to mother. But there’s another emotion hovering in the distance. You can’t see it. You don’t want to see it. And I wish you didn’t have to. But the day comes when your child begins to suffer. Maybe an illness comes. Maybe a mental health struggle. Maybe addiction circles the house. Maybe your child is abandoned or bullied or abused. Maybe thoughts of suicide slip under the door. Whatever the cause, you have to watch. There’s no walking away. You are a mother—your child’s sacred witness. When suffering comes, ready or not, you have to mother a suffering child. And it’s hard. There are no rules. How can there be rules when every child’s story is unique. Every child’s suffering is personal. There are no books to guide you through this. Don’t go looking for “five steps to end suffering.” It doesn’t exist. As the mother of a son who has suffered mightily, I have crawled through several patches of broken glass. In grade school, he and I navigated a terrifying divorce. Then, as high school began, his father died. From then on, my son suffered bouts of depression, cutting and panic attacks that led to dropping out of school. In college, he found his footing as he worked to protect our right to dissent. He helped hundreds of young people navigate protests and arrests. But that got the attention of the government and he received two subpoenas to 14

before secret federal grand juries to name other activists. As instructed by his attorney, my son refused to speak. we are not really in partnership with them. Expecting the stones to act as objects we can simply own—and their energies as something we can consume—is another way of holding ourselves apart. And there is no magic in that. The judge was livid. “Don’t you know what I can do to you?” he screamed. My son stood silent. And the judge ordered my son to a high security federal prison until he was willing to name other activists. My son was never willing to jeopardize others, so he spent most of his 24th year in prison. I visited him five times watching him gradually fall apart. Witnessing your brilliant, brave, highly-principled child disintegrate in prison is a level of suffering I wish no other mother has to experience. And yet we know countless mothers around the world endure this every day. While my son was a prisoner, I found prayers and practices that helped center me in my sacred role of witness so I could stand with him and for him. Those were the hardest eight months of my life. They were also the holiest. In those eight months, I discovered the real transformative power of prayer and the hard-won freedom that comes with forgiveness. But before I could pray, I had to do something important. Something that made it possible for me to find the strength to pray. First, I had to find a mother. Before I could mother my suffering child, I had to be mothered. Before I could witness my child’s suffering, I needed to know that I had a wise and holy witness. That mother wasn’t my biological mother. ‘She’, like many of her generation and her mother’s generation and so many generations before her, didn’t mother well because she had not been mothered well. It’s no one’s fault. Or rather, it’s no mother’s fault. It’s our patriarchal world’s fault. During the 5,000-year stranglehold of patriarchal religion, god was external, male, demanding, and tribal. The central story of all our patriarchal religions is about a god-man savior and of course all his emissaries are male. But that wasn’t always the story. For eons before patriarchy, we lived in matrilineal cultures, worshipping the Goddess in the land. ‘She’ wasn’t lost somewhere in space demanding obedience to impossible My bones knew this somehow. My body had a hunger for an intimate relationship with the Feminine Divine—a hunger I didn’t know I had until ‘She’ landed in my body during a surprising 40-day and 40-night initiation. And everything changed. Everything. ‘She’ became the center of my life, my prayers, my www.1111mag.com

prayers, my devotion. I welcomed her to be my Mother and ‘She’ taught me what it really means to be mothered. ‘She’ has the name Mother Sophia, but ‘She’ has countless names: Isis, Ishtar, Mother Kali, Our Lady, Stella Maris, Tara, Shechinah…. Call ‘Her' by any name and ‘She’ is there. I turned to ‘Her’ throughout my son’s ordeal. It was ‘She’ who taught me how to pray for a suffering child. ‘She’ who sent me the perfect human helpers. ‘She’ who encouraged me to write him a letter every day. ‘She’ who guided me to create an altar of freedom for him and write each date for 253 days on a small rock. It was ‘She’ who held me when I cried. And ‘She’ who led me to forgive. The hardest thing I’ve ever done was to forgive the judge who sent my son to prison. It was also the key that unlocked his prison door. The first thing I did when he was released was say a prayer of thanksgiving to Mother Sophia. And I’ve been following ‘Her’ guidance since. I am who I am and doing the work I do because ‘She’ whispered prayer artist in my ear one night. I answered, “I don’t know what this means and I’m pretty sure it changes everything, but if you want me to be your prayer artist, I will be your prayer artist.” So if you long to be a holy beautiful mother, call ‘Her’. Call ‘Her’ by any or all ‘Her’ names. Your Mother will answer. rules; ‘She’ was right here, in our midst, in our sacred fires, in the sprouts of spring, the flowers of summer, the snows of winter. ‘She’ was our first Mother, our last Mother, our unconditionally loving Mother. ‘She’ knew how to mother us and we knew how to be mothered. Mother Mirror ME… Mirror Mother

As I made that collage with all the white (and a few black) faces within the outlines of my body, I felt all the old anger and resentment rise. I didn’t know what to do with these feelings. I felt like the art was making me feel worse. Should I cover the white faces with pictures of myself? But I’d always had access to pictures of myself and could look at myself in a mirror. That was never enough to heal me. Perhaps pictures of my mom or ancestors? To honor who I’ve come from? My grandmother- my mother’s motherpassed away last year. What I remember her lamenting about most often when I was a child was that her perfect skin was becoming wrinkled. She had beautiful, unmarred skin even until her 60's and 70’s.

My grandmother grew up in a coastal town in what is now part of North Korea. It was famous for its mineral springs, and my grandmother attributed the quality of her complexion to those waters. In Korea, my grandmother was tall, commanding, hard-working, wealthy and vain. She could also be very generousbut it was clear that she believed she was better than most people she met.

She didn't have any friends and
her relationship to my mother was probably the
closest thing to intimacy she experienced. Her own mother - my great grandmotherleft her when she was just a baby to make a new life in a foreign country.

My grandmother never really felt supported and loved by her father or step-mother. She suffered from this mother wound her whole life. My grandmother never wanted to have children or get married. She wanted to become a singer. Not only did she marry, she had 8 children! (She tried to run away several times and suffered from depression throughout her adult life). All her children were boys, except for my mother. Like many people in Korea at the time, she was conditioned to prefer boys
over girls and said things to my mother like,
"If not for you, it would have been perfect. I would have had only sons.”

My mother inherited her mother’s beautiful skin, pride, hard-working spirit, aesthetic sensibility, perfectionism and generosity. But, she was much more compassionate and lived to serve others, including her mother. Neighbors would comment that she was being treated like a step-child or a slave. But my mom never recalls having felt anything
negative towards her mother. Even now, her brothers complain about the lack of maternal love they received from their mom. But my mom only ever felt sorry for her. My mother was also considered beautifulbeyond just her complexion. She attracted attention everywhere she went for her beauty, style and grace. She was also wicked sharp, eloquent, skillful and physically unstoppable. So, as a chid, of course I looked up to her. And felt deficient. I remember sitting next to my mother while she looked at magazines, and she would compliment the white models, making comments like, “Wow, Asians don’t even look like fully-developed people compared to them. Look at those amazing eyes and legs.” And I would cry with indignation, “How can you say that? You are just as beautiful as them; You are more beautiful.” And she would smile, “No, not like that.” The thing was, she didn’t seem jealous. She owned her beauty. But, I couldn’t stand to hear her say these things. Not about herself, and not about me. Because if she- to me, the most beautiful woman in the world- was not even comparable to these white models, then where did that leave me? www.1111mag.com

23

It was strange. At the same time that I was being ostracized and felt ugly for being Asian. I also knew what it was like to be favored because of my appearance- among Koreans. I remember my grandmother saying often, “If we were in Korea, you could be Miss Korea.” (“Well, we’re not. And here, people tell me I’m ugly everyday.”) I remember saying to myself as a kid, “If only they (boys I liked) would take the time to get to know me. If only they could ignore the way I looked and see how great I am.” Later in college, that became “If only boys would like for me the real me, and not just for my looks.” I remember one of my white boyfriends had dated an Asian girl before me, and I was relentless in my assertion that he had an “Asian fetish” and that it disgusted me (while still engaging with him). I realized this obsession with physical beauty- beyond racism- was a source of misery. If you are perceived as beautiful, you engender jealousy in others. And you are always afraid of losing your looks, because it becomes part of your identity if you are constantly praised for it. And if you aren’t considered beautiful, you’re taught to feel less than those that are. My mom told me stories of how she didn’t have any friends when she was young because they were all jealous of her nice clothes and her prettiness and the fact that all the teachers favored her perfectly obedient behavior. (There went my theory that if I’d grown up in Korea I wouldn’t have had any of the social problems I did in the US) My mother didn’t have anyone to mirror her inherent value as a girl. a woman. a human being. She was only validated in relation to her looks and her behavior towards others. When my grandmother’s body was being buried in the ground, my mother fell to her knees and cried, “How can you leave me alone like this? without even a sister? It’s too lonely to bear. I am so alone.” 24

My mother has also suffered from a lack of maternal love her whole life. She always desired but struggled to experience intimacy with other women. With other people. With herself. I am also in this struggle. I think we all are. judgment. separation. sexism. racism. consumerism. The idea that we are better or less than others because of external forms. Because of our sex, our race, our accomplishments, or financial status. This sense of competition. That life is a race and we’ll get left behind if we don’t look good enough, make enough money, get it "right." This feeling that we are not OK just as we are. That we do not inherently belong and have value. That we are not unconditionally loved. That we are not held by the universal mother. By Life. The story “The Moon Comes Home” is all about the journey from shame and not belonging to coming home to unconditional love. I started creating paintings to make this story into a picture book years ago. I only did a few and then I got stuck. I got stuck around the character of the condor. I didn’t know how I wanted to draw him. I judged myself for this. I’m lazy. Not focused enough.I’m letting Life/ Mother Earth/ my higher self down by not completing what I’m “supposed” to. Ha. The story itself is all about trusting the cycles of life. And being in total surrender and self-acceptance. I have been delving more deeply into the blood mysteriessacred rites around menstruation. All over the world, when a girl begins to bleed it is said that she “becomes a woman.” How we view menstruation is intimately tied to how we view women and the feminine. www.1111mag.com

11:11 — DECEMBER 2020 — DIVINE MOTHERING

25

How do you view menstruation? Most of us feel it is something to hide, a nuisance, uncomfortable, painful, perhaps even disgusting. My periods used to be very painful and I also used to think of it as a nuisance. As I became more connected to Mother Earth, I found myself really enjoying my moon cycle. I started to feel very empowered and feminine when I menstruated. I loved bleeding into the Earth directly. I would give my plants water mixed with my blood. But I never thought to add it to my art until recently. I was guided to paint a yoni with wings. I painted it with my blood. Later that night, I kept thinking about the moon story. Suddenly, I realized the RED condor of my story, who is an ally and guide for the MOON, represents this sacred blood of life. And then I immediately painted the condor with my blood. And in that moment, I realized (again), I'd always been perfectly aligned with life. I wasn’t behind. I wasn’t lazy. I wasn’t stuck or missing something. I couldn’t have created the painting for this story a moment sooner than I did. We are connected to each other through love and blood. Not only our biological family, but to all of life. We are all born bathed in blood- it is our first anointing. This separation from our physical mother begins our journey of individuation. 26

But it does not end our relationship to the constant, loving embrace of the Divine Mother. As I open more deeply to the love of the Divine, that's always been here, I am learning to become my own mother. As my mother learns to become her own mother.
As my grandmother opens to the love of the Great Mother.
Now is the time for all of us to become our own mothers.

To treat ourselves with the patience kindness, and acceptance that is our birthright- so that we may embrace one another- as mothers, as children, as brothers and sisters.

Now is the time for all of us to become our own mothers. YEEVE RAYNE Korean-American artist and storyteller. myth. magic. poetry. beauty. innocence. belonging. flowers. fire. I serve the Divine Feminine ... and her dance with the Divine Masculine.

My Call to Motherhood

“Don’t be your child’s first bully.” I had to stop my body from ricocheting back, the way it would from an actual bullet. There was no gun, but those words barreling out of the moderator’s mouth felt like an emotional gunshot, leaving me stunned. I froze. My husband froze. It was a turning point. As we sat in our first support group meeting for families with transgender kids, my husband and I both had the same thought. Had we been our child’s first bully? In my earliest memories as a child, I wanted to be a mother. My favorite game was family, and I always played the mommy. My own mother would get frustrated because all I ever talked about was becoming a mom. Forced to leave graduate school shortly after my birth, she was determined that all three of her daughters would become professionals. At twenty-eight, I became a pediatrician and a mother almost simultaneously. But motherhood was always my calling. I am a pediatrician, wife, sister, friend, colleague, writer, runner, and an activist. But motherhood is 90% of my identity. So, at the age of thirteen, when my middle child said, “I’m not a boy. I’m a girl” out of the blue, the rug pulled out completely from under my feet. My identity as mother came crashing down as well. My daughter never had what I considered signs of being transgender as a child. She played with cars and trucks; wore t-shirts, shorts and crocs. She never tried on her sister’s princess costumes, resisted haircuts or said, “I’m a girl” before sitting on our family room couch at the age of thirteen and a half; giving a dissertation on what it means to be trans. Every narrative I’d read or seen on TV depicted trans-girls wearing dresses at age four. That wasn’t my child. So, what was my response when she came out? Anger, denial, disbelief. This had to be some teenage attention-getting, angst phase. I had no time or tolerance for it. As my daughter sat on the couch divulging the biggest secret of her life, I said, “no, no, no,” shutting her down. Over the next several months, as anger, denial, fear, and grief played a dance of who got to lead in my mind, I repeatedly questioned myself as a mother. If this was true, what kind of mother was I if I had not had any clue about the true identity of my child? If this was not true, how much of a failure as a mother was I to have a child who was so lost, confused, and attention seeking to resort to being transgender as an answer? No matter which side the coin landed on, the conclusion was clear—I was a terrible mother. Repeatedly, my daughter tried to have conversations with me about who she was, but the chatter in my head was so loud that I could not hear her. She sat on my bed and asked me if Images Credit: https://pixabay.com/users/anncapictures-1564471/ 34

just at home in private, I would call her by a different name and use she/her pronouns so she could test how it feels and I said, “No, absolutely not.” I switched her from therapist to therapist, looking for the one who would agree with me that this was a phase, until a counselor from school called me saying that my daughter had walked into her office with suicidal thoughts. That was the final straw that made me land in the support group meeting that I had been avoiding attending for months. We all have visions of motherhood and what we want for our children. From the moment we see that plus sign on the pregnancy test, a mother is born. We feel a bond to the magic growing inside, and our imaginations start to run wild. I knew motherhood wouldn’t be all sunshine and roses. I knew there would be challenges along the way, and raising three kids, I had faced my share. But never in any of my visions for my children had I imagined having a trans-child as a possibility. Thoughts of one of my kids getting cancer or being in some tragic accident would occasionally sneak in before I’d quickly force them out, worried that in some crazy karmic law of attraction way, I’d manifest these nightmares into a reality. The likelihood of one of them being trans without me knowing was so incredulous that it never occurred to me. This was the one parenting scenario that I was not prepared for. When I sat in that first support group meeting, and the words, “Don’t be your child’s first bully” were shot at me, I had a wakeup call. This wasn’t about my identity as a mother. This wasn’t about me. This was about my child. I had to turn down the volume on all the noise that was in my head and listen to my child. I had to stop living in visions of my future child. I had to see the one who was in front of me on that day if I wanted her to have any future. I’d wanted to be a mother my whole life? What did I think being a true mother meant? This was my call to action. This was my call to motherhood. It was time to answer it. After that meeting, there was no turning back. I made an appointment for my daughter with a therapist who specializes in trans kids. I made another appointment with a physician who specializes in trans-youth. I got out of my own way. Trusting other people, experts in the field, to tell me who my child is didn’t make me a bad mother. My daughter went from hiding and being alone and depressed to being out and thriving. Giving my daughter the space and support to be her true self, not the one I thought she was, this was what it meant to truly mother.

EIGHT IMPORTANT THINGS TO REMEMBER AS A MEDICAL INTUITIVE I should start a Dear Heather column for medical intuitives. Even in the world of lightworkers we seem to be an odd lot. I’m told a lot of mediums (and psychics or whatever word we’re using right now. I include everybody that reads energy) are nervous to be a part of a diagnosis. That’s never the thing that makes me nervous. Helping guide a healthcare worker of any kind even consider something that is being overlooked brings me great joy; literal unadulterated joy that comes with doing what you were meant to be doing.. I’ve come up with a list of things to keep in mind as a medical intuitive; largely because spreading knowledge and being open with what you can is so important. I love a list for my own doing. This stuff I know. 1. Listen carefully. Don’t leave anything out. — When reading a patient or client we hear lots of things that seem really outlandish. We hear about how to sit, blueberries, organs that have nothing to do with why we might be there. We hear about friends who have had other experiences and songs and weird shading over a thigh muscle. — Listen to those signs and say everything that you hear. Everything. If it doesn’t make sense to the health care worker or client, you’ve said it and I guarantee it will come up later for them. — You must plant the seed for all concerned. Let them stumble on it in their own time, or let it pester them until they go back and check again. — Spirits aren't wrong. I’ve been given images of friends or relatives that have nothing to do with whom I’m reading. Inevitably, the message leads to the right place. 36

11:11 — DECEMBER 2020 — DIVINE MOTHERING

www.1111mag.com

— Got a picture of late Aunt Rosie in your head who passed from kidney failure but the client is coming to you with lower back pain? — Tell them to check their kidneys. Ask them about urinary tract infections. The spirits will bring you to places in languages that you understand no matter what. 2. Get to be friends with an enlightened doctor. — I know they are few and far between to find. Western medicine has knocked all the love out of curing people. As we all know, many Eastern philosophies are taking root again. Many people are seeking higher ground, largely out of desperation; but also out of logic and how it sits with them. As people like us know, sometimes the abstract makes the most sense. — My practice changed drastically when I found a doctor that actually wanted to meet weekly to talk about her patients as well as what I working on. Now I send my clients to her. — If a client is open to being referred, I’ll tell the doctor what I saw and what some of the spiritual attachments are. The spiritual stuff is mostly to see what correlates but the real scientific work is as medical as any other doctors work. I realize that I’m lucky we found each other. She gets another view point and I get…..(this brings me to my next point) 3. Medical education. — I don’t expect you to enroll in med school. I can’t sit at a desk for ten minutes not to mention years. There is a lot to bring to the table when you speak the language that needs to be spoken. Just like going into the world as a young person and being able to speak with confidence, it is our responsibility to have the spoken word in our pockets. — About 25 years ago I went to my first homeopathic doctor. I couldn’t find a doctor that could help me; I knew I was sick. I was tired ALL. THE. TIME. My stomach was distended day and night. I woke up one day and heard “Find a healer.” — I’m not sure I ever thought that way but I started asking around and fate brought me to the first person that would be a health mentor to me, Dr. Eyraune Jau-Saune. He diagnosed me by looking at my fingers, irises and tongue. And he listened to me. — I learned a ton about food, herbs as well as modern medicine from this amazing man. Over the years with his encouragement I learned about Ayurvedic medicine and went on to absorb anything to do with the body. All these things are very mainstream right now and I urge you to find out what is real and what is not. www.1111mag.com

11:11 — DECEMBER 2020 — DIVINE MOTHERING

37

— So many of our “health gurus” are more celebrity personalities. Really be careful. — Learn about diseases; find out in plain everyday language what makes the heart beat and the brain function. How does aging affect people differently? What makes inflammation in different organs? Just read. 4. Be careful of truths. — When I was learning about Ayurvedic medicine, one of the teachers said to the class “Be warriors of Ayurveda. Remember it is not about body type. It is not about a trend. A 5000 year old medical practice cannot be boiled down to a list of body types in a world where we hit the ground running.” Brilliant words if you ask me. Just because it’s trending doesn’t mean it needs to get into your lexicon. — One of the positives and negatives of our work is that we truly utilize what we know whether it’s on purpose or not. We are very human; ego is always a possibility and it’s always fun to impress. — Remember, a majority of websites are businesses. It’s celebrity, click bait, money making. Research. Find that doctor friend and double check. You will know what is right or wrong if you really listen. Our work is what’s in right now. Let that flow around you. Appreciate it, please don’t wear it. 5. Be aware of all the levels of health. — Know that we’re not just always reading the immediate health. We also read deep seated DNA issues, ancestral issues as well as passed lives. — Do your very best to stay in the present. It’s easy to get pulled into the undertow of what reality the patient is working with. — Be aware of where your information is coming from. Listen to the language you are hearing and be discerning. Let your client know where your concerns are. — I find that in matters of health, panic and defensiveness kicks in. Many times I’ll ask question about health issues and the answer will be a resounding “No”.It’s usually followed up with a call correcting themselves. It’s hard to remember your own self when you are sitting in fear. Leave room for them to remember. 38

11:11 — DECEMBER 2020 — DIVINE MOTHERING

6. Protect yourself. — When I read, whether it’s health or anything else, I tend to take on the physicality of the spirits I’m hearing. I gesticulate the way they do; my speech will change slightly. My posture will be different. — Similarly, when doing a medical specific reading, often I will feel where the pain is in my client’s body. I can’t stress enough… before a reading, protect yourself. Picture yourself surrounded in light, pray, speak out loud to the spirits…whatever suits you. — This also protects you in knowing your own boundaries. Being empathic only means you can see other people’s energies and sensitivities. Always absorbing them means you have to work on your own boundaries. 7. Don’t second guess yourself when you see a run of the same diagnosis. — It is a classic spirit move to keep bringing in the same energy over and over. It’s how you get better. It’s a way of the energies showing you all the ways you can read one illness. Remember the old joke “How do you get to Carnegie Hall? Practice, practice, practice.” It’s always mind blowing how often this happens in all light worker spaces. — I was at a group reading not long ago where about 400 people were sitting in the audience. The medium asked the audience about a teen who had committed suicide. Two women had raised their hands. Both of their sons had. Then he narrowed the facts, “He played football; a green jersey with the number 12”. Again, both women raised their hands. There were a few more questions that covered both boys and then he named the mother. This happens all the time. Spirit was insuring that the energy and room was available for both parents. The other mother was read by another medium. Both were taken care of, and were in a space where they could be together.

— I often have to check myself that I’m not going right to something because my more earthbound side is taking me there out of ease. Inevitably, it’s just like energies teaching me how to recognize them. I will often be brought physical ailments that I’ve also experienced myself. I’ve suffered with endometriosis for all of my adult life and I can diagnose it – even with undocumented atypical symptoms – very easily. It is not just my own experience, but because of the client’s energy as she walks in for the reading. Very often it’s a new energy. Endometriosis shows up differently in each woman. — For men, the same with prostate issues. They show up differently, but the same. It’s our responsibility as medical intuitives to take note so we recognize it. 8. Never rely on what you already know. — I say this to my doctor associates. You cannot stop learning. We know so little of science. We will never know everything. We can know a lot. We can know more than most people we know. We can be cocky or confident. Do not ever stop learning, — Spirits come through in many ways to help you learn new things. If a client questions you, listen. I can be very confident about a diagnosis, and know it to be true. But, I will always listen to the client and think about it again and even reread it after the reading is over on my own time. Sometimes it’s something I need to do without the client in the room. That mention from the client is still a message for me in some way.

NEW YEAR FIRE LIMPIA RITUAL This fire limpia for the New Year opens pathways for an ideal and fruitful coming year. My mentor, Don Tomas taught me the importance of beginning the New Year, the first of January, with a New Fire Ceremony to set the stage for the coming year. He instructed me to thoroughly clean the house, let go of items that may hold energies that no longer resonate with me, cleanse and charge my ritual tools, and cleanse and feed the soul essence of my house. To clean the house, I typically make lemongrass and rosemary tea and place a cup of it in the cleaning solutions. If there are items that no longer resonate with me, before donating them, I usually smudge them. On one occasion, I let go of a crystal that had been given to me by someone whom I had a falling out with and had moved away from. I let go of it by burying it in the earth. I went hiking one day, dug a hole, and placed the crystal within the Earth, allowing all the energies of this situation to be released and healed by the Earth. I then cleanse my house with a white fire limpia and perform sahumerios in each room. Sahumerios involve smoking out all spaces of a room or house. The following items are needed: charcoal tablets; a steel brazier, in which to place the charcoal tablet; wooden matches; rose, basil, rosemary, or sage essential oil (optional); and the items that are identified in the listed blends below. If it is not possible to obtain all the items in the identified blends, listen to the space, your intuition, and the plants or resins you will be working with to serif you can www.1111mag.com

substitute something else. All of these blends are excellent to clear dense energies, feed the essence of spaces, and invigorate them with refreshing peaceful energies. Keep in mind that that all the plants identified in the blends should be dried, before using them for the sahumerio. Blend 1. Copal, storax, bay leaves, rosemary, rose hips, ground cinnamon sticks, ground coffee, brown sugar, and tobacco Blend 2. Flowers: rose petals, lavender, lantana, chamomile, calendulas, rose geranium, and lemon thyme Blend 3. Herbs: sage, rosemary, basil, rue, mint, lavender, chamomile, comfrey, lemongrass, mugwort, parsley, and yarrow Blend 4: Benzoin, frankincense, myrrh, cayenne pepper powder, wormwood, gum arabic, fennel seeds, dill, tobacco, and ground coffee Light the charcoal on the brazier and place the blend of items on it. I occasionally place a dab of one of my oil blends (rose, basil, rosemary, or sage essential oil work nicely too) to create more smoke and thoroughly smoke out spaces. For every room, begin by smoking out the four corners, and then continue to clear it out by moving in a clockwise spiral direction, as much as possible. This motion is said to encircle and clear out any types of dense energies. For a white fire limpia, the following items are needed: a pot with a handle, preferably a stainless-steel or cast-iron pot (the tools you use for limpias should never be used for actual cooking, eating, or drinking. They are your sacred magical items and should be placed in a separate space, out of reach, so they are not mistakenly used); a couple of handfuls of plain Epsom salts; approximately 8–10 tablespoons of rubbing alcohol (a small splash); and dry herbs, such as rosemary, lemongrass, sage, parsley, or chamomile. Place all of the items in the pot. Then carefully throw a lit wooden match into the pot. White-fire limpias clear very large spaces instantaneously. Unlike with sahumerios, it is not necessary to go to every corner of the room, as the intensity of this fire clears out all corners and spaces of a room. If possible, clear out all rooms and common areas within a home. 42

Afterwards, I leave a gorgeous platter of my favorite fruits on the dining table with a seven-day candle next to it. I do not, however, light the candle until the sun rises. I write my intentions for the New Year with a number-two pencil on a piece of parchment paper. I place the paper underneath the candle, next to the platter of fruit. When the sun breaks, I light the candle and let it burn out naturally. Then I eat half of the fruit on the platter and put the other half into the compost, sharing the fruit with the earth. The candle is symbolic of a New Fire for the New Year, similar to ancient Mesoamerican customs. Beginning the New Year in this fashion is said to bring in great fortune for the year. It has always been fortunate for me. This New Year Fire Limpia is from my first book, Cleansing Rites of Curanderismo: Limpias Espirituales of Ancient Mesoamerican Shamans. THE MAGNITUDE OF MOTHERHOOD

I was four when my grandmother said, “You’ll make beautiful babies one day.” My reply, “I’m not having any baby’s mom-mom. There are too many unwanted children in the world. Someone needs to care for them.” I can’t claim that I knew what I was saying at that age, however, what my intuitive little spirit predicted came to pass. Since I’ve not carried a child in my womb, you may wonder what I can possibly offer on the topic of motherhood. First, let me say that parenthood is the ultimate gift and sacrificial act that any man and woman can engage in. The mother is tasked with creating a hospitable environment that allows her body to be used to perpetuate life; to carry genes forward generation to generation. Whether she does this willingly or unwillingly, for life on Earth to continue, women are the carriers of genetic information that determines what life will look like in the eons to come. That’s a tremendous task that her body manages without conscious input; or so we’ve been taught to believe. So, while her body goes about the task of growing this little being, the mother is subjected to multiple levels of stimuli, which affects her physically, mentally, emotionally, and even spiritually. Everything she experiences creates an environment of either strain or peace for the life growing inside of her. As the microscopic cluster of cells develops from its embryonic state into an infant, its organs and systems mature. The nervous system, hair, skin, gastrointestinal tract, liver, pancreas, thyroid, skeleton, connective tissue, blood system, urogenital system and muscles become an integrated unit; while the intellect and intuition (sensory portions of the body) amalgamate. From the day the sperm and egg become one, the cell clusters intelligently assess and process all of the information and stimuli it is subjected to. From it’s host to the external environment, the child feels and experiences every sound, temperatures, emotions, tastes, smells, energy frequencies, and any other things it is exposed to. All living things do the same, in the developmental stages; from the one-celled 44

amoeba to the largest life forms. All of life is gifted with the ability to feel and learn from its environment. In the case of a human mother and her growing fetus, what the mother feels and how she experiences her world, is processed by the life inside of her. That life learns from her, about her, and about its outside world. Today, there is big debate over pro-life issues. I am not here to debate pro-life or pro-choice. What a woman does with her body should be her own business, no matter the circumstances. However, I aim to inform you about how your thoughts and actions matter, most from a Universal perspective. Everything you say, do, and experience matters. The web of life is so tightly integrated that a child processing what is sees, hears, tastes, smells, and feels becomes a being in and of itself. How it’s mother feels about her life gets passed down into that genetic line and will ultimately play out as the child’s experience; due to what it learned from the womb, and into adulthood. I have spent over 30 years working professionally as an empath and telepath. My body acts like an MRI or CT machine. Not only can I see what is going on within the cells of someone’s body, but I can also feel how the organs are functioning, or not. I can feel that person’s emotions about any and all experiences they have had throughout their life. When something goes haywire in the organs, I can retrace the abnormality to the experience that triggered the problem. That leads to my commitment for sharing this information with you. I am able to be a voice for those that cannot speak themselves. I am dedicated to helping future mothers better care for themselves and their children. Women need to understand how everything experienced, and every emotion connected to those experiences, will be passed down and felt by the developing fetus. On the negative side, if a woman is raped or impregnated in a hostile way, and she feels vulnerable, violated, and angry, the hostility will be felt by child. The negative stimulation will influence its development, either inhibiting or stifling its growth and health in some way. The same holds true when a woman experiences good things. We can all aspire to have a peaceful, successful life; however, life doesn’t always work that way. Motherhood should not be taken lightly. If you truly desire to be the bearer of life for the generations to come, please take mental, emotional, physical, and spiritual stock in what I have shared. Everything you sense and experience gets passed to that child inside of you, from the day the egg and sperm have their first intimate encounter. Be kind to yourselves; work diligently to be the ideal host to the life that desires to come through you. Their life, and yours, depends on it. Images Credit: https://pixabay.com/users/hhach-146898/

In Prayer… Infinite Spirit, Lift the veils of illusion from my eyes, so that I see the truth. Remove delusion from my mind, so that I see with Love. Let me know that each person in my life appears so that I learn to care more deeply for myself, others and all people. Let me see each experience as an encounter where I may open to revealing more of me. Let me realize that each harsh reality is simply the shadow of a past that is caught in distorted perceptions. Let me know that I am filled with the Divine hue; that radiates with the Infinite’s truth. Let me see that I am a conduit of Divine will, who must center, calm and be still. Let me realize that I am Source’s copilot; and that God has the wheel... I am along for the ride and through grace, every imaginable and unimaginable dream shall be fulfilled. Help me get out of my own way, so that your guidance becomes manifest. Teach me to mother myself, so that the needs of the child within are put first. Through you, my life has meaning... it becomes a way... the truth... and the life for holy revealing. —Simran Images Credit: https://pixabay.com/users/jordan_singh-4343948/ 46

EVOLUTIONARY BALANCE

This year’s election process revealed the building anxiety, fear and frustration within our country. At times, that erupted into dense waves of grief, anger, apathy and violence. Friends became unfriended. Families were at odds. Our children became more afraid. Each day appeared to amplify separation, conflict and divisiveness. Our political process and country, in the midst of chaos, was hanging in ‘the balance’. The way I see it, chaos is a harbinger of new birth. Worlds upon worlds were created out of the Big-Bang. That turned into an extraordinary and majestic universe. Why wouldn’t creation enact the same creative birth through our collective process? I see the world as it is, but I also know that the world speaks to us through signs, symbols and synchronicity. This is not the typical point of view expressed in the three-dimensional world of politics; but perhaps it is time to insert some light, love and unity, as a healing balm, upon a very deep wound. Put aside your identity and political position, for a moment. This conversation requires rising above the issues and awakening a larger perspective. It also means diving below the issues, feeling into the emotion and shadows that are asking to be seen, heard and acknowledged. In doing so, perhaps the mind will be broadened, and the heart can be opened; so that a bridge of oneness can form. Let us look at the present moment from a perspective of neutrality and energy. Everything is energy. Something bigger than political parties or issues is playing out. Although the country appears divided on an election map, look again. The election results reflect balance. We are in a process of balancing, not only within the 2020 election; this was occurring during 2016’s election. We are yin and yang; red and blue. Biden is our healing. Trump, equally, has been our healing. www.1111mag.com

11:11 — DECEMBER 2020 — DIVINE MOTHERING

47

President Biden is #46, which is a 10 or 1 in numerology. 10 signifies endings . 1 is symbolic of new beginnings, foundations, morals, values, and integrity. 0 represents starting over; the balance of alpha and omega, or masculine and feminine. President Biden chose a woman, Vice President Harris as his leadership counterpart. This illustrated ‘masculine’ aligning with ‘feminine’, which is a shift into balancing prior oppressed feminine energy. The Senate and House of Representatives represents the two sides of the brain, our governing faculty. These two must partner as ‘one mind’ for balance and alignment to occur. The ‘left’ brain is designed to be intuitive and feminine, feeling into what is being called for from ‘the body’. The right brain is logical and masculine, designed to implement what will support ‘the body’. The country is the body, and each one of us are a cell within it. By being divisive or separate, we are only attacking ourselves. This creates dis-ease. Through unity, we can restore the health and soul of our nation. This means coming together, cell communicating with cell; and both brains operating in tandem. ‘Life’ is not about men or women, red or blue, you or me. Life holds a bigger picture that will outlast all of us. Energy is equilibrating; rebalancing what went awry through historical interference, polarity and division. Everything is energy. Nature is in charge, balancing masculine and feminine energies of creation. Life’s biological intelligence brought Covid-19 (Coronavirus) to support our healing. ‘Corona’ means crown, head or mind. Our minds are infected with fear, separation and division. Our ‘inner houses’ are at odds. Mother Nature sent us inside to reflect on who we have become. ‘Masks’ are a blatant symbol of the invisible masks we wear with one another. They are also a sign that we must be quiet and listen. We are being guided home, into the body; to feel, intuit and understand. Covid-19 affects the lungs, which relates to unconsciously holding deep grief. Loss of taste and smell are representative of losing common sense… and our intuitive faculties. Our natural instincts are compromised. Covid-19 came to have us reconnect to ourselves, and each other. It is exposing the face of separation and disconnection. It is asking us to feel our emotions and empathy. This is what healing looks like. Healing often appears opposite of what we think. We are the healing. Creating resistance, interference, and fighting life’s transitions only makes things more painful. Finding neutrality will heal the soul of our nation. Attaining a neutral mind, regarding those who think differently, will assist in regaining balance. Feeling what rises emotionally, and doing the inner work to become neutral, is how we each can offer healing. 48

We are conduits of transformation. The choice to engage right thought, right word and right action lay before us. We can clear the stagnant energy and emotional debris that exists by being present and listening. We can unite and work together, if we get out of our heads and move back into our hearts. We must let life have a chance to balance our messes.

WILL WE

BE

ANIMAL …

Trust in life’s plan. Alchemy is present. Patriotism rose. More people voted than ever before. Feminine energy is now being recognized as equal in position and power. We live in a democracy where every voice counts. Let’s revel in that. Let us focus our conversations there. Let unity become the meditation… and our vision. Being the cure, instead of the virus, means that each of us engage in: •

Reestablishing trust with self and the other

Healing relationship divides

Reclaiming expressions of our Higher Selves

Anchoring into compassion and kindness…

Listening

Holding higher perspectives

Seeing others as capable

Realizing reality is created through our thoughts, words, actions and energy

OR

L O W E R, A S HUMAN…

Let us partner with life. Through individual mastery, we strengthen our nation. By disciplining focus and vision, engaging connection and communication, and uniting through the generosity of Spirit… we create a better world for our children, and children’s children. Rise above the fray, while also standing with grace in what you believe. Hold a vision for the highest good of our nation, so that we find common ground in what truly matters… humanity. It takes a village to raise a nation. Will we be that village?
