As spring marks new beginnings, I can’t help but think of these new beginnings in comparison to my actual beginnings in the publishing industry. We shot our spring fashion spread at South Coast Plaza—the shopping destination that has defined Orange County lifestyle for decades, and continues to do so. In the last three decades that I have been going to South Coast Plaza, so much about it has changed. When I first stepped foot in South Coast Plaza more than thirty years ago, I would take my daughter shopping and we would stop at our favorite lunch spot, Forty Carrots. Yes, Forty Carrots for those who recall that quaint little spot. I fell into the publishing world right around that time, and along with many milestones and memories, the rest is history. Now, it is recognized as an international shopping destination, attracting fashion enthusiasts from all over the world. South Coast Plaza evokes those memories in me so it was truly an honor to be able to work with the Plaza for our fashion spread along with a few of our partners, including Saks Fifth Avenue, Piaget, Max Mara, and MAC Cosmetics. This issue represents spring renewal focusing on health, happiness, and home. Be sure to flip through the fun shopping adventure, full of bright spring patterns in our fashion pages, in addition to intriguing interviews featuring Tony Moiso from Rancho Mission Viejo, who shares his plans on the new ranch community opening this year, and lifestyle tips from food and fitness expert, Katy Clark. Last but not least, we spotlight a few incredible travel destinations—from the remote islands of French Polynesia to the breathtaking mountain ranges of Ojai—they are sure to inspire adventure and healthy living in the months ahead. Here’s to the new season and all the inspiring places it may take us.

Forever Finds: “I’m obsessed with this Jonathan Adler pillow my best friend gave me as a gift. It’s black and beige with the letter “B” and it goes with anything in any room. It’s so cozy and well made; I know I’m going to have it forever because it will never wear out!” Truth Be Told: “‘Be yourself; everyone else is already taken’ –Oscar Wilde. I love the simplicity and honesty of this quote. It’s just a little reminder that in any situation, no matter how big or small, stay true to yourself.” The Great Outdoors: “One of the only places I have a desire to go camping is Big Sur—I think I would really enjoy hiking there while getting some really beautiful photos of the scenery.”

Spring Cleansing: “Juicing is an efficient and effective way to rid the body of toxins. Participating in a short-term, monitored cleanse is excellent and the results can be amazing. I prefer green juice and make sure I add a glass daily.” March Madness: “When talking sports in the spring, there’s only one: college basketball. I really enjoy the University of Kentucky—they’re a dynamic team and a lot of fun to watch!” Break a Sweat: “I highly recommend the popular P90X DVD series as an alternative to the same gym routine. I like to lift heavy weights, but I cycle in P90X DVD’s to keep me toned and agile.”

2 Robert E. Palmer

The Great Outdoors: “My absolute favorite place to soak up nature and get away from it all is my own backyard. It is so lovely to sit outside with the lit lanterns glowing and fountain flowing amongst my many, many oversized palms, vines, and mini jungle. Instant relaxation and my own slice of rainforest in Southern California.” Truth be Told: “‘Life is what happens when you’re busy making other plans’ –John Lennon. This reminds me to keep the back door open for surprise and not force the ways of life.” Forever Finds: “I have three hand-carved exotic wood benches I adore, a large mermaid and fish bench from Bali, and an elephant bench from Thailand. They’re all one of a kind, and I just love the unique artistry of them.”

A Room with a View: “Living on the beach in Laguna is something I will never take for granted. The fact that the most-utilized parts of my home— my kitchen, dining, and living room—all have full ocean views, is something I will never take for granted. Few can say they’ve seen a whale breach during a charming family dinner, or a family of dolphins play while doing the dishes.” Truth be Told: “‘We are spiritual beings having an earthly experience’—said to me many times by my father. Remembering this encourages me to stay happy and always keep things in perspective. One can enjoy the luxuries of life while maintaining a spiritual depth of goodness and meaning...the key is to find that balance.” Break a Sweat: “My current obsession is stand-up paddle boarding. It’s pure serenity and a bit of excitement, especially when paddling over a giant stingray or near a California Grey Whale and her calf, which I’ve experienced both just off of Laguna’s Pearl Beach.”

Forever Finds: “I purchased a wonderful, handcarved piece of Mexican folk art at an antique store– a winged priest-like warrior statuette. I found three amazing, hand-carved and whimsical warriors at an art shop in San Francisco and a historical guardian I found in an antique shop in Carmel. The five of them are all sacred friends and have protected me and my family without fail for nearly two decades.” Spring Cleansing: “There is a great juice bar called Nekter that was started by a local couple. They offer a one-day cleanse that uses six juice combinations over the course of a day, in either a basic or advanced package. I actually made it through the whole day without hunger on just the juices with a handful of raw almonds at dinner. I felt great not only that day, but the following day and now I try to cleanse every month or so.”

Spring.13.Contributors.indd 20

4 Heather Fish

6 Jenny Peters Break a Sweat: “Hitting the sand to play some doubles beach volleyball is always my favorite way to mix things up in my exercise routine. I only wish I could play every day.” The Great Outdoors: “Yellowstone National Park in the summer, where elk and moose wander by, bald eagles soar above, and a lone bison walking down the center line of the two-way road through the park causes a traffic jam on purpose.” Forever Finds: “What I thought would be a very cool art deco black velvet couch when I bought it, my living room couch turned out to be made of the crappiest velvet ever made. I hated it until I slept on it for the first time—then it was love. Can any other couch be so perfect for napping during an NFL football game? I have my doubts.”

The Great Outdoors: “My favorite place in the summer is Aspen. I don’t like the cold, and have never been there in the winter, but the summer is completely beautiful and energizing. But, I’ll never get used to the random bear up in the tree, five feet from where you’re standing!” Truth Be Told: “To paraphrase Churchill, he said that having common sense is a sign of intelligence, enough of it, is genius.” March Madness: “Almost every year we head to Vegas for March Madness, we meet up with long time friends and watch the basketball games—it’s riveting!”

Forever Finds: As a lifestyle photographer, it’s no surprise that Tony’s most coveted items in his home are photographs of his daughters. “The pictures of my kids bring me back to that moment in time, it’s captivating.” Spring Cleansing: Tony recommends Nekter Juice Bar’s 3-day cleanses to slim down and stay fit. “With the change of each season, I go to Nekter to do the 3-day cleanse; it’s a great way to start off a new season.” Break a Sweat: “I go to Equinox or I mix in boxing to switch up my workout routine. I find whatever keeps me motivated.”

8 Brett Martin and Michelle Lyn

10 Virginia Fay

A Room with a View: “I love to sit in the rocking chair in my son’s room, beneath the mobile that my husband and I made. It’s a tree branch adorned with hanging paper leaves inscribed with positive attributes, dreams, and wishes that were written by our friends and family for our son. When the sun streams in through the window, the light hits it in just the right spot and makes the leaves flicker, as if they’re dancing.”–Michelle Truth be Told: “Abraham Lincoln said a lot of things, some that I don’t fully understand, but one statement that has really stuck with me is, ‘We are only as happy as we make our minds up to be.’ I often have to remind myself that happiness is a state of being that comes from within.” –Brett The Great Outdoors: “I love packing up dinner and a bottle of wine for a sunset picnic on the beach. My husband, son, and I love to go to the beach in Del Mar, but I’m a sucker for any spot with a great sunset view.”–Michelle March Madness: “The NCAA Basketball Tournament is always something I look forward to after the end of the NFL season. I’m happy to see SDSU representing our city and playing so well.” –Brett

Truth be Told: “’Be silly, be honest, be kind’ –Ralph Waldo Emerson, one of my favorite quotes.” A Room with a View: “I love the den in the back of my house—the walls are covered in windows with one side looking at the giant tree in my backyard and the other offering beautiful sunset views of the LA skyline. It’s such a peaceful contrast of city and nature.” Forever Finds: “I collect postcards from everywhere I travel and use them as household decorations in frames and other collages around my room, and I love the reminder of my past trips.”

Break a Sweat: “Nothing like the outdoors to keep physical activity interesting and evergreen. Mountain biking gets you to scenic vistas faster than hiking, challenges the conditioning and rewards you with the downhill thrills. Sailing and kayaking keeps my love of the ocean alive and it never looks the same twice.” Truth be Told: “‘Think, believe, dream, dare.’ Often attributed to Walt Disney, it’s shorthand for a solid, simple formula for success: think about your values, make plans, believe in yourself, dream big, and dare to make those dreams come true.” The Great Outdoors: “Yosemite is certainly one of the world’s most inspirational natural wonders. Its rock slabs and rugged trails remain some of my favorite places to reboot. Its clean crisp air in spring keeps me mostly allergy free!”

Spring.13.Contributors.indd 22

11 Kirsten Prosser Truth be Told: Kirsten Prosser, founder and owner of OnQueStyle in Corona del Mar, is a renowned fashion stylist in Southern California. “My favorite fashion quote [is by] Coco Chanel:” ‘Fashion fades, only style remains the same.’”A Room with a View: “My favorite room is the breakfast room, it overlooks our pool and bamboo-lined backyard. It’s the perfect place to read my favorite magazine with a cup of coffee in the morning.”Forever Finds: Kirsten adores the special antique chest of drawers passed down from her Danish grandmother. “It has travelled from Denmark to Sweden to Spain and now it resides in my home in Corona del Mar. It’s a piece I cherish every day.”

13 Larry Weinstein Truth Be Told: “One of my favorite quotes is by Don Juan by Carlos Castaneda from Tales of Power:”‘The basic difference between an ordinary man and a warrior is that a warrior takes everything as a challenge, while an ordinary man takes everything either as a blessing or a curse.’ It’s taped to my desk and I try to remind myself of it every morning.” March Madness: “I don’t follow college basketball very closely for most of the season, that is until March Madness. Because then it’s like an entire season condensed into three weeks and along with millions of sports fans, I get basketball fever. My Ohio State Buckeyes are perennial participants but sadly are never there on the final weekend. But they do have a solid team this year, so even with past evidence to the contrary I continue to hope.”

music theatre RICHARD JACKSON Now-May 5 The Orange County Museum of Art presents a new Richard Jackson exhibition, Ain’t Painting a Pain, a retrospective of a radical Los Angeles artist. In a series of room-size installations, the exhibition presents a number of major works never before seen in this country. His wild “action” paintings, mutated with sculptures, are presented in their full glory. A 350-page catalogue will accompany the exhibition, which, after its OC run, will travel to Munich and Belgium.

Virtuoso Bobby McFerrin brings his amazing vocal talents to the Walt Disney Concert Hall for an evening of jazz, classical, and pop music with his trademark octave-floating bass to falsetto sound. He has performed and recorded with musicians such as Herbie Hancock, Chick Corea, Yo-Yo Ma, and a host of other legends. His 1984 album The Voice made jazz history, recording for the first time a solo vocal album without any accompaniment, and his 1988 Simple Pleasures album included his infectious hit Don’t Worry, Be Happy.

BILLY ELLIOT Broadway hit Billy Elliot pirouettes on to the Segerstrom Hall stage, with its 10 Tony Awards, including Best Musical, in tow. Based on the 2000 film, the play is a story of a young boy in a sad working-class mining town in Northern England. In the midst of a depression, Billy discovers an odd love and talent—ballet. Taunted by those around him, he escapes to a haven of dance, the Royal Ballet School, a first for such a working-class youth. While dark at times, the show blossoms with hope, laughter, and triumph, all to music composed by Sir Elton John.

South Coast Repertory brings the Fantasticks to the Segerstrom Stage as its final performance of the year. The remarkable production, with a book and lyrics by Tom Jones and music by Harvey Schmidt, ran for nearly 42 years after its opening in May of 1960. The duo received an Obie Award and the Special Tony Award for their efforts in 1992. This classic is reimagined by famed director Amanda Dehnert, who adds a series of visual illusions and fantasy to this timeless production. Come see one of the most popular musicals of all time, in a presentation the Washington Post says is “fresh and alive again.”

FLEETWOOD MAC May 28 Multi Grammy-winning and Rock & Roll Hall of Fame inductees, BritishAmerican rock legends Fleetwood Mac bring their 34-city US tour to the Honda Center after a threeyear hiatus. The tour marks the 35th anniversary of their 1977 Rumours album, one of the most successful records in history with over 40 million copies sold worldwide. The band’s current lineup includes founding members Mick Fleetwood and John McVie, along with the ever-spinning Steve Nicks and Lindsey Buckingham, who later joined the band in 1975.

Andrea Bocelli, the brilliant and blind tenor from Pisa, Italy, somehow finds his way to the Hollywood Bowl to perform with the Los Angeles Festival Orchestra. This talented crossover classical and pop artist has sold over 80 million albums worldwide, received a 1999 nomination for Best New Artist at the Grammy Awards, won the Golden Globe and an Academy Award nomination for his The Prayer duet with Celine Dion, as well as the dubious distinction of being named one of People Magazine’s 50 Most Beautiful People in 1998. Trek to the Bowl to see one of today’s most acclaimed classical singers.

CATCH ME IF YOU CAN June 25-30 Catch Me If You Can, the musical based on the 2002 Steven Spielberg film about Frank Abagnale, the teenager who successfully pulled off cons worth millions of dollars, lands at Segerstrom Hall during its national tour. After a run in Seattle, it took off on Broadway in 2011 and garnered four Tony Award nominations, including Best Musical. The stage production features a very sixties-based score by the Hairspray team of Marc Shaiman and Scott Wittman, and is a comic caper to be enjoyed by all.

Somewhat of a style nexus, industrialist Kuen Rameson applies her natural sense of fashion and business know-how to everyday life photographs by Tony Florez stylist Christine Vartanian

THE WOMAN: Kuen Rameson, 40, in a quaint cottage near the beach in Corona del Mar PROFILE: Founder and CEO of GLOSS Moderne, a luxury hair care company that created a sensational collection for women and men. Born in Seoul, Korea and raised in Orange County, the former wealth manager started the American beauty brand after finding inspiration from her clients’ success at doing what they loved. From her insatiable search for the most perfect beauty products, Rameson launched her own luxury brand in 2011. Since then, the array of paraben- and sulfate-free products have been making waves across the country.

“All of my looks are edited, simple, and clean, with beauty in the details. I’m enamored with the Jerome Dreyfuss collection.” Asymmetrical black tank, Helmut Lang, $180, Barneys CO-OP South Coast Plaza; Black gypsy pants, Theory, $265, Theory South Coast Plaza; Raffaella sandal in nero, Alex Wagner, $840, A’MAREE’S Newport Beach; Carlos handbag in marine, Jerome Dreyfuss, $1415, Barneys CO-OP South Coast Plaza

HAUTE HABIT: Her lifestyle is synonymous with her brand’s identity, exercising beauty and timelessness from head to toe. Inspired by clean, edited and modern labels, Rameson’s closet is populated with versatile everyday ensembles including Hermes, Chanel, Gucci, Chloe, and Bottega Veneta. “It’s my own curated collection. I gravitate toward neutrals—white, gray, black, and cream—and current labels. I’m in love with my new Jerome Dreyfuss handbag…the story of him being Isabel Marant’s husband sold me on the bag, [and it’s] named after their son.” ON THE HORIZON: After great success with Rameson’s hair care collection, it didn’t take her long to start developing a new line. Managing Director Jonathan Tudor, who helped grow Virgin Airways and launch Manolo Blahnik in the US, has recently joined the company in an effort to help launch a body care line and bath and home collection. “He really opened my eyes to the growth potential of GLOSS Moderne. Long-term, we are thinking big, like maybe high-rise big, white, lacquer, very GLOSS Moderne.”

Kuen meets with close friend and Pastry Chef and Co-Owner Amelia Marneau of Marché Moderne, whose restaurant is her company’s namesake. “Oh, Florent’s food! And Amelia’s macarons! The loveliest people, the most wonderful experience—and how perfect, it’s in South Coast Plaza. Whenever I think of GLOSS Moderne, I think of Marché Moderne…and that always makes me smile.” Silk shirt dress, Vince, $395, Neiman Marcus; Sandalo shoe in nero, Barneys New York, $550, Barneys CO-OP South Coast Plaza; Quilted handbag, Chanel, price on request, South Coast Plaza

bask: How did you develop your concept? Kuen Rameson: I wanted something that I couldn’t find out there. I was looking for sensorial aspects like design, fragrance, and efficacy. Esthetically, I wanted beautiful, clean, modern packaging, something that would look fabulous in my shower, and I had to have pumps on all the containers—not that mishmash of different colored bottles upside down! For the fragrance, I worked with one of the most highly-acclaimed global fragrance houses to create our signature Coco de Soleil fragrance—it’s rich in coconut, almond and rum… a sensual, intoxicating fragrance reminiscent of the French Riviera. As for efficacy, I made it pure— took out everything bad so it’s sulfate-free, sodium chloride-free, and paraben-free—and used only the most premium ingredients. I didn’t give my chemists a budget… I just said make me the best products that exist so that once people try them, they will want them forever. b: What is the biggest obstacle you’ve had to overcome in attempting a new business? KR: Definitely learning everything from scratch…the beauty industry was such a dichotomy from the investment world. Initially, I knew nothing about regulatory, manufacturing, distribution/retail…had never even heard of a PO or EDI…so I would talk very corporate and then rush to look everything up and learn everything I could as I went along. Also, I didn’t know any of the key players in the beauty [business]. Fortunately, it’s a

small industry, and there have been some very dear friends that introduced me to everyone I needed to know. The beauty world has been so kind to me; everyone in it wants to see young, fresh, burgeoning brands succeed. b: You must have some beauty secrets—what’s your everyday routine? KR: I believe true beauty comes from the inside out. If you’re in a really happy place in your life, and you take the best care of yourself, it will show! So, like the GLOSS Moderne Collection I created—for health and nutrition—I avoid all the bad stuff, like preservatives and artificial anything, and enjoy the highest quality nourishment…pure, organic, wild, grass-fed…along with special treats and indulgences from time to time! And as far as beauty secrets on the outside, I take impeccable care of my skin, teeth, and hair. If you put all of this together, it brings so much happiness that you just have to smile…and that’s the best beauty secret of all. b: What are your must-have products? KR: Oooh, I have so many! I love how my guilty pleasure is now my job! Must-have: lip gloss! Lip gloss for my hair—my GLOSS Moderne Luxury Hair Care Collection—and lip gloss for my lips. Recently, I was introduced to Pamela Baxter, CEO of Dior North America, and I told her if I was stranded on a deserted island with one beauty product, it would be her Dior Addict Lip Maximizer.

getting there + around Air Tahiti Nui With recent upgrades in cabin and in-flight entertainment, Air Tahiti Nui offers a comfortable 8-hour flight from Los Angeles to Tahiti. New seats have lightened each aircraft by 3.5 tons, so feel good about your minimal carbon footprint when dipping your toes in the South Pacific.

Tahiti Tourism Learn about the history and culture of French Polynesia before you go. Or, at least check out the pictures and start envisioning yourself there already.

where to stay Tahiti In Style Combining a love for real estate with the luxury hotel industry, Tahiti in Style is Tahiti’s first vacation rental agency. Offering villas, houses, and condos on Tahiti, Moorea, and Bora Bora, the agency provides personalized concierge services like grocery delivery and spa treatments in your “own” home.

InterContinental Tahiti Resort Minutes from the airport, the InterContinental offers the perfect introduction to Polynesian culture. Staff covered only by sarongs and tribal tattoos transport your bags while you sip mango and pineapple juice at check-in. Manmade lagoons and infinity pools provide a postcard-perfect view of nearby Moorea.

Bora Bora Pearl Beach Resort & Spa Luxury meets authenticity at the Bora Bora Pearl Beach Resort & Spa. With a near complete staff of locals, the Tahitian greeting “Ia Orana” welcomes you wherever you go. Built completely from local materials, Polynesian touches are the hallmark of the resort’s idyllic beach, garden, and overwater bungalows.

InterContinental Tahiti Resort The locals always know best and in this case, they know to head to the InterContinental for their dinner and dance performances. The best on the island of Tahiti, the impressive buffet spread is nicely complemented by the lively Tahitian dance performance.

where to eat Snack Mahana Run by a local family out of their home on Moorea, Snack Mahana is the perfect roadside restaurant to sample Tahitian poisson cru (raw seafood salad) or lagoon fish prepared traditionally with coconut milk. Clear your afternoon, because there’s no rush at this backyard cafe overlooking the turquoise lagoon. Bloody Mary’s A Bora Bora institution, Bloody Mary’s serves the fresh catch of the day in an ambient tiki torch filled space, designed to mimic traditional Tahitian Heiva huts. A warm local staff, sandy floors, and occasional concerts by Jimmy Buffet make this a popular spot for celebrities and honeymooners.

MaiKai Overlooking the water from the main island of Bora Bora, the MaiKai Restaurant features an eclectic international menu with both casual and intimate dining options. Their Lounge Bar is the perfect place to enjoy a martini or exotic island drink while watching the sunset.

Enjoy snorkeling, stingray encounters, and swimming alongside gentle black tip reef sharks during the lagoon tour. End the day with a traditional Tahitian picnic on your very own private beach.

what to see + do Shop at Le Marché Market Indulge your senses at the 155-year-old public market in Papeete, Tahiti. Rows of fresh fish, produce, vanilla beans, and flowers blend with colorful sarongs, handicrafts and oils to introduce you to all things Tahitian. Make sure to visit a black pearl shop just outside the market and pick up an iridescent memento.

Dive with Sharks Operating on seven islands in French Polynesia, TOPDIVE’s instructors offer safe, professional dive experiences for novice as well as seasoned divers. Explore the coral gardens inside the lagoons and along the barrier reefs to encounter sharks, sea turtles, manta rays, and dolphins.

Visit the Belvedere Lookout Tour the Jurassic Park-like island of Moorea with Albert Transport, choosing from 4WD trucks, ATVs, or buggies to reach spectacular mountain vistas. Or, cruise the lagoon and bays on a jet-ski tour alongside dolphins, rays, sharks, and whales, if you time it right!

Surf World Class Waves The waves in French Polynesia, although as beautiful as her people, are not necessarily as welcoming. Tahiti and Moorea are known for the challenging, yet perfect waves that break along the reef passes like Teahupo’o and Haapiti. There are a few spots for beginners, but keep in mind that a surf trip here requires some commitment and experience since most waves are best reached by boat and inter-island flights do not always allow boards.

Urban Fiji After our 6am arrival, and while waiting for the sun to rise, we were greeted by our driver who would take us for a “recovery” day to the Sofitel Resort on Denarau Island. Within the first hour, however, we met a series of Fijians who were not exactly what we had expected. We were pestered by our driver, whom whined bitterly over how much money he had lost due to the recent cyclone and now needed money from us. The driver was one step behind since the folks in the coffee shop at the hotel had already taken our money by treating US as Fijian money (it trades for only about 50% of the value of the US dollar). The trouble continued with our travel agents who had no idea of when our flight would leave the following day. To top that, the pace of service made the zombie apocalypse on the Walking Dead look like a world-class track meet. Unfortunately, we spent an uneventful day in Danarau, with diminishing hopes of Fiji, including four hours on the phone late that night trying to find someone, anyone, who could tell us when, if ever, our flight would take us to our resort on the other island. The following day, after our flight finally left (three hours late), we were flown in what appeared to be a prototype for the Wright Brothers Kitty Hawk aircraft to an airport an hour from the airport we needed to go to and our luggage was unceremoniously

thrown off the plane because they put in “too much” gasoline by mistake. As such, we photo: Chris McLennan

were nearly ready to take the next flight out—to anywhere—by the time we got to our resort after a 2-hour ride through the wilds of Fiji.

Rural Fiji All of our concerns magically disappeared upon our arrival at Namale and the real spirit of the Fijian people was first revealed to us. Greeting us were nearly a dozen staff members singing, clapping, and warmly greeting us in a sincere and remarkably friendly manner—all to the chant of “bula,” the traditional Fijian greeting, like the Hawaiian aloha or the Italian prego. Pronounced “boolah,” it literally means “life” but is routinely used as a greeting. A wave of warmth and hospitality, aided by being ushered to the restaurant and presented with a cold beverage, immediately transformed our view of Fiji. Within

Jean-Michel Cousteau Fiji Islands Resort is the most famous family resort in Fiji. With its award winning “Bula” kids club, nannies, and ecological focus, the resort has been a favorite for years. Namale is our resort of choice. Motivational speaker Anthony Robbins owns this luxurious resort, and it is often ranked the top resort in Fiji, although the property needs some remodeling. It features two restaurants and bars, multiple private decks, a beach, horseback riding, pools, a small 9-hole golf course, an indoor basketball court, a large spa, a bowling alley, and a worldclass diving program. Likuliku Lagoon Resort is a beautiful resort, and the first in Fiji with over-water bungalows. Turtle Island is one of Fiji’s top resorts, featuring the beautiful “Blue Lagoon” and a series of private bungalows. The Wakaya Club is another of the top resorts, and it features large bungalows, a mansion, and a host of activities.

In the days that followed, our family became a part of theirs, with every staff member greeting us warmly and mostly by name. We had a wonderful week without television. We snorkeled, had amazing dives on a one of a kind dive boat (complete with a subwoofer and amazing sound system designed by the owner himself), paddle boarded in the harbor, golfed, swam, bowled, played pool and ping pong, hiked,

Shark Diving is almost anywhere. Reef sharks are common, but there are also a number of sites where bull, tiger, and hammerheads frequent, many off southern Viti Levu. Namena Marine Protected Reserve is a world-class dive site located off Savusavu with a protected marine reserve, massive soft and hard coral, and an abundant array of fish. visited local villages, and enjoyed every moment at our island paradise. The turquoise waters of Fiji are magical, and much of your trip should lure you into them wherever you may stay. Warm, calm and stunning—diving (or snorkeling) in Fiji is among the best in the world. Rising up from the Tonga Trench are waters filled with life that help create the largest collection of soft coral anywhere in the world. On our dives, we saw amazing soft coral, lobsters, underwater caterpillars (as they are called by the locals), all species of fish, and hundreds of sharks, including reef, bull, photo: Chris McLennan

and hammerheads. The water is stunningly clear blue, and so warm that wetsuits are generally not required.

The Wakaya Club & Spa

Wherever you stay, no trip will be complete without the Kava Ceremony, an event for ceremonial purposes and nearly any social occasion. In fact, many Fijian villagers partake in kava for hours on end nearly every night. Simply stated, kava is a mild narcotic drink made from the pepper plant (aka piper methysticum). The ceremony consists of the kava being placed in a large, carved wooden bowl, where those participating in the ceremony sit on the floor around the bowl, clap to accept the kava, and drink the muddy looking water, which results in a slight numbing of the mouth. Tip: a nearby quick sip of Johnny Walker or Patron makes the ceremony far more enjoyable.

Where to Stay Fiji has a number of beautiful resorts in addition to Namale, and the islands are a favorite destination for romantic vacations. Most of the finer resorts are quite small, having only 20 or so “bures” or bungalows on property, some of which sit on stilts in the water. Fijians are gifted with the talent of making guests welcome, and at the intimate resorts most of the staff will greet you by name and know your favorite drink within a day or two. And, while small, luxury abounds.

troops, and several decades later, the storied spot is now a serene getaway to many and home to one of america’s premier southern california championship golf courses.

THE INN Established in 1923 for Edward D. Libbey, whose dream started with a private country club and golf course, died before the hotel was built, although his design plans were still carried out and the Inn was built nearly a decade later. The result: 308 well-appointed, spacious and modern Spanish Colonial-style guest rooms and suites overlooking 220 acres of beauteous natural landscape. DO There are several outdoor activities to partake in—hiking, biking, and fishing, to name a few. The obvious choice: golfing. With a setting as picturesque and acclaimed as this, play 18 holes on the championship course—host to seven Senior PGA Tour events—at least once. When you’ve had your fill on the green, walk the trails and venture into town for lunch at Rainbow Bridge (think: a smaller version of Whole Foods) and shopping; the main drag is a treasure trove of charming boutiques and artisans. Later, kick up your feet and lounge by the Herb Garden Pool and enjoy the private cabana service. PAMPER After a good night’s rest, watch the sun rise and cascade on the dew-laden grasses, grab a cup of coffee at Joe ‘n Go, venture to Spa Village and spend the day pampering yourself. Indulge in a complete sensory experience and begin your day with a personalized training session in the fully-equipped workout room, followed by a treatment (or two) at Spa Ojai. Don’t miss lunching al fresco at Café Verde, where you’ll be surrounded by magnificent views of the Topa Topa Mountains. The food is always fresh, organic, and locally grown— the perfect trio of ingredients for physical restoration. ART One of the highlights and what truly makes the Inn a unique location to visit is the Artist Cottage & Apothecary. The Artist Cottage offers several types of classes, including: drawing, water colors, painting, and mixed media. You could spend an entire day here embracing your inner artist, but don’t forget to also experience the Apothecary where you can blend and create your own personal scent for a perfume or product line. This bungalow is a hidden gem on the property, and a noteworthy activity for couples, friends, families, wedding parties, and children.

Blending scents at the Artist Cottage & Apothecary

EAT There are numerous places to eat in Ojai, but the best all-around dining experience will definitely be an evening spent at Oak Grill at the Ojai Valley Inn. Choose a table on the patio directly across from the green where you can appreciate views of 200-year-old oak trees and mountain vistas; despite cooling temperatures, it’s undoubtedly the best seat in the house. The centrally located patio fireplace and heaters overhead, not to mention the heated cement floors, will keep you warm and add to the convivial ambiance throughout. On the menu: a little something for everyone. Feast on delectable staples, from Brussel sprouts and truffle potato terrine to grass fed rib eye and perfectly-grilled salmon.

Bask in Fashion Spring Fashion Preview

The remarkably sophisticated glamour seen on the runway for Spring 2013 reflected a style that is certain to complement the confident modern woman. Many people tend to shy away from color, but the rich jewel tones that carried over into several of the spring collections, mixed with unique textures and designs, have created an irresistibly cool edge that will translate well into every woman’s wardrobe. Throw on those colored-lens shades, grab your clutch, and get ready for a daring season of fabulous!

The retro-inspired Corie Sunglasses in Blue Havana by Oliver Peoples feature an ocean blue-colored lens and are truly a vision.

Derek Lam’s unique creation, made of lasercut foil paillettes, has a futuristic sensibility—a theme that made its way into several spring collections. This beautifully structured metallic piece is particularly out-of-this-world, yet very wearable.

There’s always something eloquent and charming about a beautiful clutch, and this quilted fabric Chanel handbag in cobalt with chain accents will hold more than you think, while adding just the right amount of femininity to any ensemble.

Spring brings with it the opportunity to don a bit of whimsy, and what better way to do that than with these stunning Blue Pave Butterfly Earrings. Rock-n-roll meets ladylike charm. Christian Louboutin Manovra Patent PVC Slingback pumps, paired with cropped white denim or a lovely silk jersey Valentino dress, are perfectly on trend for the season.

State of the Art: Multifunctional Electronics Unveiled This year marks a tipping point where mobile computing and mobile devices have left the desktop in the dust. In early January, the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) debuted the latest devices that are scheduled to land on retail shelves during the back-to-school season. Once reserved for high-end PCs, the new devices have excellent screens and impressive multi-core processor power; the time has arrived when one can essentially watch almost anything, anytime, and anywhere. Critics have assailed the consumer electronics industry for slowing innovation. However, if you look a bit deeper into performance, software, and services, you will find that electronics are evolving as fast as ever and finally getting easier to use. Yes, really this time.

TV Sets Just when you thought you had the best giant HD flat screen money can buy, the consumer electronics industry creates the Ultra HD (UHD). UHD is also known as 4K TV, or 4x the resolution of HD TV. Overall, perceived picture quality is a function of many factors, including color palette, contrast ration, brightness, resolution, and source material. Over the next few years, the 4K UHD TV will upscale the old HD 1080p content making it look even better. Screens sizes are also inching upward. Most manufacturers now have offerings up to a whopping 80 inches. LED has won out over Plasma and now OLED (Organic Light Emitting Diode) is chipping away at LED for sheer brilliance and absolute dazzle, but screen sizes will remain relatively small, and very expensive, for another year or two. On the other hand, there is more to picture quality than just the number of pixels. Color palette, contrast, dynamic range and motion control all contribute. So, when you shop for an HD, or UHD TV, be sure to look at a variety of content, including Blu-ray, under different conditions.

Whatever you choose, you won’t be disappointed with any of the following choices for 2013: Sony’s Bravia X900 UHD TVs include multiple versions. All of the high-end models include WiFi and SideView, and a second screen feature for tablets and smartphones to control and supplement what you see on the big screen. Many Sony TVs, like LG, integrate Google TV, which includes voice commands via a special remote with an embedded mic. Get used to the Google TV search feature and you will never go back to a programming guide as it can locate almost anything. Samsung’s UN85S9 is state of the art UHD TV. At 85 inches, Super Bowl parties will take on new meaning and at 4K you will feel like you’re sitting in a private screening room. Samsung’s 2013 TVs feature vastly improved voice commands, and a recommendation system much like how Netflix provides suggestions and tracks favorites. Consider Samsung’s design, interface, and comprehensive selection, and it’s easy to see why it has become the top consumer electronics brand in the world. All of the latest UDHD sets have excellent 3D capability, but this year it doesn’t appear to be a focal point. We still believe that for big sporting events and certain movies, 3D will still be a desirable accessory but not the main mode of viewing.

Tablets, Phablets, Convertibles Can’t decide whether to pack a Laptop, Ultrabook, eReader, Tablet, or oversized Smartphone? Then, Convertibles or “Phablets” may be your answer. Convertibles bend, twist, slide, and fold from tablets into ultrabooks with touchscreens. Windows 8 is optimized for multi-touch screens running Intel’s “Core” processor and ultrabook convertible choices abound. Dell’s XPS flips and folds. Lenovo has products that flip (The Yoga), twist (The ThinkPad) and split, where the keyboard detaches completely (The ThinkPad Helix). Sony’s Vaio Duo and Toshiba’s Satellite U925t slip and slide their keyboards into place whereas Samsung’s ATIV Smart PC’s keyboard splits off. Android is unstoppable and comes with an almost unlimited range of applications. Android powered tablets include Sony’s Xperia, and, likely the best, Google’s own Nexus 7. Samsung started the phablet category blurring the lines between ultrabook convertibes, tablets, and phones with its Galaxy Note, sporting the once considered quaint stylus, and an oversized HD 5.5” screen. Over 100 million Galaxy units shipped—making it a serious iPhone rival. Not only is holding the Galaxy to your head for a phone call awkward, but also looks odd and is probably best used with a headset. Although you may not think you need a giant phone/small tablet, once you have gotten used to the excellent screen, quad-core power and versatility you may not go back. Direct to US, consumer newcomer Huawei’s Ascend D2 and Sony’s Xperia P are Androidbased phones that can easily double pose as tablets. The D2 is a serious entertainment machine sporting a 5-inch HD retina display, Dolby surround stereo, and 16 megapixel camera.

Alternative Transportation Z Board If the skateboard park has lost its lure, maybe consider skateboarding as transportation. The electric powered, weight sensing ZBoard was launched on Kickstarter. It accelerates as you lean forward and decelerates as you lean back (think Segway), with a top speed of 17 MPH and a range of 10 miles, it will get you around town and only set you back $949. Electric Bikes During our recent stay in Tel Aviv we noticed a plethora of electric bikes ceaselessly weaving in and out of traffic, bike lanes, and sidewalks. Proponents argue that electric bikes will also catch on here as a healthy, efficient commuter alternative. Bike lane-legal ebikes have top speeds of up to 20 MPH and 700 watts, enough to get you up hills and to local destinations for work or play. SoCal-based Currie Tech and Swiss made Stromer make top of the line choices that are both pedal assisted and controlled via a throttle with regenerative breaking. The new eFlow from Currie Tech features a removable high-capacity Samsung lithium-ion battery pack, seamlessly integrated into the bike’s seatpost for a sleek, balanced design. The eFlow has a healthy 35-mile range, taking up to six hours for a full recharge, but you can easily carry a spare battery, just in case.

AfterShokz Hear the music and all your surroundings simultaneously by slipping on a pair of AfterShokz Sportz M2 open ear headphones. They sit comfortably in front of the ear and utilize patent pending bone conduction technology to transmit stereophonic sound through the listener’s cheekbones to the inner ear bypassing the eardrums. With AfterShokz open ear sport headphones the ear canals stay open so listeners are able to hear ambient noises such as oncoming traffic, car horns, ambulances or other warning noises, potentially preventing accidents that can be caused by headphones and earbuds blocking out these sounds. This enables anyone participating in an activity to stay connected to both what they are listening to and the outside world. AfterShokz open-ear sport headphones are lightweight, water resistant, and feature an in-line control and a standard 3.5mm connector that fits all smartphones and music players.

Home On the Ranch A Pleasant Path

For more than a century, Rancho Mission Viejo has maintained thousands of acres just outside our backdoor. Known as “the greatest of all California ranchos, the 23,000-acre historic landscape has been home to the last working ranch in Orange County, miles of trails, citrus and avocado groves, as well as several established communities in the southern valley. Committed to ranching, agriculture, and preservation, this year, the family-owned and-operated company introduces Sendero, the first mixed-use residential village in the new planned ranch community. Here, we invited President and CEO, Tony Moiso, and Senior Vice President of Community Development, Paul Johnson, of Rancho Mission Viejo to give folks a look at what the future holds for this scenic sanctuary.

bask: What inspired the Sendero concept? And how important is the notion of a connected atmosphere? Paul Johnson: There are two terms that are important to what we accomplished in Ladera and what we’re bringing [to Sendero]. The first term is intergenerational living. There are builders thinking about intergenerational housing, [and] building new types of product, where three levels of generations can be [together]—grandparents, parents, and kids. Intergeneration is, in my mind, at least two levels: it’s intergenerational within a family context and also to people who don’t know each other. What we’re doing in Sendero is bringing out what we will call the 55+, the boomers, into a situation where they can intermix and live with all other age groups. We are bringing small, age-qualified neighborhoods [into] a master planned community that’s all ages to live in one environment. We also do well at building social capital in a community. It’s a big term, but it’s really simple. When you can provide a way in which people can connect and build relationships, suddenly their engagement, their trust, [and] their reciprocity of how they treat each other changes; it raises the level of what a community can be about. [This concept] can occur in any community, but we accelerate [the process] by bringing in a community service organization that’s permanently funded, that allows clubs to form, and people who have common interests to come together. photo: Eddie Perlas

b: Creating a community such as Rancho Mission Viejo and a new village such as Sendero is a team effort. How did you put together a successful team? Tony Moiso: Our internal Ranch team forms the foundation of our community development efforts. Each team member brings an incredible amount of talent, knowledge, and expertise to everything we do. We also carefully select the consultant teams, which consist of the very best in the real estate development industry. b: How does The Ranch differ from other similar spaces? TM: In addition to our great location in South Orange County, Rancho Mission Viejo is a working ranch—the last working ranch in Orange County. Generations of my family have been blessed to own and manage the Ranch since 1882. In addition, Rancho Mission Viejo is home to The Reserve at Rancho Mission Viejo, which, over time, will become one of the largest habitat reserves in California. Plus, Rancho Mission Viejo will offer up to 6,000 55+ homes and 8,000 allage homes set within inter-generational villages. So, there are many ways the Ranch is unique and distinct from other places and planned communities. Yet, perhaps the most important difference is what we call our culture of care, or the goal of establishing communities, which foster real Ranch-style hospitality. Ranch communities include many social gathering places that offer all sorts of ways for residents to come together and interact through programs and events at clubhouses, connections made on-line and in-person, traditional celebrations, and activities for all ages and interests. Starting with the village of Sendero, residents of Rancho Mission Viejo will be invited to participate in all sorts of events—and be as connected as they desire.

“This is a ranching, agricultural family that got into community development. The family decided 60 years ago that they wanted to stay. They said we can do both—we’ll start building communities, and [continue] ranching and agriculture. So, they’re really steeped in history in those multiple environments; they still run cows, still pick lemons and avocados.”

–Paul Johnson

3/19/13 11:58 AM

b: Has today’s lifestyle had a defining impact on the overall concept? Is this style a new way of thinking? PJ: Long ago we started to look at how the new-aging boomer wants to retire. How do they want to live? What’s the environment they want to be in? Until today, or [in recent] years, the real formula was these large communities in the middle of nowhere, where you picked up all your roots, moved out to this place, and that was it. You were in this massive community and that was where you were going to retire. So, we started to research how people [really] want to retire. At that point, we decided there’s a better solution. We think the solution is taking these small age-qualified neighborhoods, and intermingling [them] right inside the market rate. So, now you’re living with people of like interest and lifestyle. We are simply breaking down the fabric and [creating] a much more livable community. b: Many neighborhoods feel so impersonal—what are they doing wrong? PJ: They don’t have a way to accelerate people getting to know each other. We [provide] this organization that is permanently funded and staffed, who canvas the neighborhood to [connect] people with similar interests; that is what builds the social capital. We are one of the few community developers that commits to that process. We focus on making sure the neighborhoods are small and provide a way for people to physically connect. b: Seventy-five percent of the ranchlands are preserved. How have you been able to maintain this for so many years? TM: When other landowning families made the decision to sell their lands, we held onto the Ranch. It was a very difficult thing to do because the pressure, at times, was so strong to sell. However, my family and I are guided by the words of my grandmother to “take care of the land and the land will take care of you.” With that as background, more than two decades ago, my family and I voluntarily enrolled the remaining 23,000 acres of Rancho Mission Viejo into a scientific study program designed to identify those lands which should be conserved as a habitat reserve and those lands suitable for development, and in 2004, our Ranch plan was approved by the Orange County Board of Supervisors. The plan for Rancho Mission Viejo sets aside 75 percent…about 17,000 acres…of the

“Another unique piece to Sendero is the Ranch plan—acres of space surrounds these developments. The experience each day will be the drive in, seeing untouched rolling hillsides, agriculture, and every now and then, a cow on top of a hill. That is what’s unique…and this is the last of what’s to come in Orange County.” –Paul Johnson remaining Ranch lands to form The Reserve at Rancho Mission and 25 percent…about 6,000…for development, phased over the next couple decades. b: How can The Ranch contribute to a better future? TM: Certainly, The Reserve contributes to a better future, as does the establishment of places for people to live, work, and play. Yet, beyond that, we believe that the blessings of landownership come with the responsibility to be a good neighbor. As such, we do what we can to support local charities through our annual Rancho Mission Viejo Rodeo and other charitable activities. We also make sure that schools, parks, libraries, and houses of worship are included in each of our communities, as well as pay our fair share and more toward new roads and all sorts of additional infrastructure improvements. And, beginning in Ladera Ranch, we embraced such green practices as reducing impacts to local landfills by recycling homebuilder construction waste, adopting innovative water storage and water-wise landscaping practices, using photovoltaics in community facilities, as well as adopting a long list of in-home conservation practices. These continue at Sendero will be implemented throughout Rancho Mission Viejo. In addition, by creating employment areas within the communities we create, we help reduce vehicle-miles traveled and reduce emissions in an important way. There is also a long list of conservation practices implemented by our ranching and farming operations. So, we believe that everything we do contributes to a better future for residents today, as well as for those to come.

Eastern Inspirations The world’s oldest cultures have influenced design for thousands of years. Nature and culture have a profound influence on Asian aesthetic, and when introduced to the home, it will make a dramatic statement in modern or traditional décor. Taking inspiration from nature and environment, the use of natural fibers, soft color palettes, dragons, and bamboo all contribute to the organic, simple, and harmonic design philosophy. Jumping dragons on this Shishi fabric print are a current interpretation of traditional design. Adding exotic pillows or an upholstered chair to a room will make a dramatic statement to any décor. The traditional Lhasa linen print or the Bamboo Trellis fabric can be used separately or as a combination, linking together nature and environment, thus creating more interest in a room. Side tables can never be underrated; they are multipurpose and functional. With classic design options, like a round bamboo metal and glass table, an exotic atmosphere can be infused without pretense. Placing a beautiful candle hurricane from the same collection on a wood-stained dining or console table cleverly mixes the elements, resulting in rich-yet-subtle elegance.

Shishi patterned fabric, Bamboo Trellis, and Lhasa Print on linen are by Brunschwig & Fils.

A classic detail to any décor is the use of a sculpture. The Cypress Bonsai Iron Sculpture with its beautiful and graceful silhouette captures a bit of nature that is appealing in its richness and simplicity. With continued Asian inspiration, a hand printed sisal wall covering that features a clean, graphic rendering of traditional Chinese cloud design will be an important design detail that will add unsurpassed texture and depth to any environment. The use of tree-themed wallpaper with a modern interpretation of nature is a subtle option appealing to those who want a more suggestive and simple effect.

Bamboo Table, Bamboo Small Hurricane Lantern, and Cypress Bonsai Iron Sculpture can be found at Bassman Blaine, Inc.

starting anew The warmer weather usually signifies a much needed spring cleaning session. Clear your mind with some therapeutic deep cleaning and freshen up the look of your home by adding touches of springtime décor in softer color palettes. From organizing unnecessary clutter to tending to the garden, here are a few simple steps to get your home into tip-top shape just in time for spring.

Transform the look of a room by adding an accent wall. Wallpaper is surprisingly chic and can create a whole new look for a bedroom or living room that is in need of a change. Farrow & Ball creates stain resistant wallpapers in carefully curated designs and colorways. This modern leopard print provides texture, depth, and is made from water-based paint. Available in five colorways. Switch out the warm and wintery pillows for light and airy ones like these Pyar & Co. pillows. The burst of color paired with a delicately gold beaded pillow creates a whimsical balance that can work anywhere—from the bed to the sofa, and even the entryway. The bathroom linens also call for a few adjustments to get springtime ready. Serena & Lily’s Fouta Oversized Towel brings a sense of modernity to the bath with its subdued stripes and tassels. Smooth cotton on one side and cotton terry on the other, this generously-sized towel is completely versatile and will become a favorite for the bath, beach, pool, or even a picnic in the park. $48; This Neo-Shaker Lounge Chair designed by Frederic Frety for Environment is craftsmanship at its finest. Made from American Black Walnut and reclaimed shelter half army canvas—the design of this armchair will no doubt “shake” things up in any setting. We love the perfectly seasonless army tent hue, but this chair comes in an endless array of colors. Visit their South Coast Plaza showroom or

We all know the feeling, when life has just been hammering at us for too long and the stresses of the job, commute, family angst, and more all bundle together into one unbearable weight to carry every day. That’s the day to book an escape to Maui, to visit the lesstraveled lands of that island paradise, for a trip that is guaranteed to relax, rejuvenate, and refresh you in mind, body, and spirit.

alternative Maui experience” according to Xorin (as everyone calls him), one that centers on yoga and wellness. Yoga and meditation classes are included in the price of the room; most of those happen in the morning, after the complimentary organic breakfast is served. The resort boasts a large center courtyard designed for outdoor yoga experiences; breathe and find your center as you gaze off at the Haleakala volcano in the distance.

The first step is easy: book your trip on Hawaiian Airlines, the carrier that is consistently rated the best airline serving Hawaii. They still serve meals in economy class, while first class boasts top-notch service, and, of course, Mai Tais! Arriving at Kahului Airport (OGG), grab the necessary rental car and head on the Hana Highway toward the little town of Paia on the island’s North Shore. It’s a far cry from the overbuilt western side, where towering skyscraper hotels dot Kaanapali Beach; instead, Paia is a laid-back, little low-slung town, where casual restaurants and boutiques filled with surf and swimwear draw locals and tourists alike.

Spending a few mornings at Lumeria is sure to bring on that muchneeded feeling of relaxation and contentment; add in a Lomi Lomi Hawaiian massage or an Ayurvedic spa treatment (the resort offers many options) and a Zen feeling is not far behind. Be aware that the resort does not have televisions, telephones, or a swimming pool, however; and it does not offer lunch to guests either, so you’ll need to venture off property for your afternoon fuel and an ocean swim. Perhaps take in the waters at the famed Ho’okipa Bay Beach just east of Paia, where windsurfers shred the waves with incredible prowess.

Stop in to Johnny B’s joint for outstanding build-your-own burgers or a divine pulled pork sandwich (you’ll see it as you enter town, right on the two-lane highway) and remember it for later, too. Turn inland at Baldwin Avenue and make your way to Lumeria Maui, a few miles up that road, where owner Xorin Balbes has created an oasis of calming wellness. That well-known Los Angeles interior designer restored the property from one originally built in 1909, calling the process “a soul calling” as he ditched California and took up full-time residence here. Created as an educational retreat center, Lumeria offers “an

Maui Beckons

A great excursion is to take a drive all the way up to Haleakala National Park, pay $10 admission per car and head off on a hike into the volcanic crater that looms over the island. It’s a gorgeous (and easy) drive from Lumeria to a landscape that will leave you breathless. Take a long walk down into the crater, or just enjoy the incredible vistas from above the clouds; make sure to bring a jacket, as the temperature is cooler at higher elevations. On the way back, be sure to stop in Makawao for lunch at Polli’s Cantina for some of the best Mexican food you’ve ever tasted; the salsa alone is to die for, but don’t miss the seafood burrito supreme, jam-packed with shrimp and mahi mahi.

Or perhaps take a stand-up paddle-boarding lesson over in Kihei; the resort will arrange that or other ocean adventures like surfing or canoeing through Blue Soul Maui—and if you’re lucky, you’ll get Ekolu Kalama as your instructor. He’s a world champion stand-up paddler and a terrific teacher; turns out with a guy like that showing you the ropes, paddle boarding isn’t hard to master at all. And you might just encounter a sea turtle along the way.

Back at Lumeria, a delicious dinner is served at Harvest restaurant, using foodstuffs from their own organic garden as well as locally sourced fish, beef, and poultry. Only one seating is offered at 6:30pm, with a single choice of entrée, along with sides and desserts; you’ll get the daily menu for the week when you check in.

Once you’ve let go of all those back-home stresses after a few days at Lumeria, it’s time to go even further into the less-traveled areas of Maui to enjoy the ultimate getaway. In fact, Travaasa Hana is so remote, you can even give up your rental car, if you’re so inclined. That lovely resort is way out in the famed Hana Highway, that twisty, turny cliff road that takes hours to drive from Paia to Hana. It’s a seriously beautiful drive, dotted with waterfalls and allencompassing lush tropical forests, and well worth it, especially if it is a sunny day. But, if a long drive feels like a stressful way to spend an afternoon, you can also head back to Kahului Airport, turn in your car and hop on a quick flight on Mokulele Airlines’ 9-seat Cessna to Hana. That flight is free when you book three nights of the “Total Travaasa” experience the resort currently offers, which also includes meals, most classes, gratuities, and spa cash credits. Once in Hana without a car, Travaasa’s crack staff will arrange any transport you need. Book your own private Sea Ranch Cottage and sink into the warm hot tub on your deck, a glass of bubbly in hand. You’ll look out onto the ocean and feel your cares melting away, all this within the

grounds of this long-standing resort (that was once called Hotel Hana-Maui) and discover twisty-rooted banyan trees the size of small skyscrapers, swimming pools, fire pits and the spa, where detoxifying wraps and massages, sea salt scrubs, soothing facials and a Watsu (massage in the water) treatment are available to help to peel the stresses of the outside world away.

your bed each night proves. Try yoga or Pilates in the Wellness Center, or book a one-hour trail ride on a docile horse and meander along the ocean-side cliffs as your guide regales you with local Hawaiian customs and lore. Learn to throw-net fish and make sure to take the journey out to the Seven Pools, those natural rock-formed pools that make Hana world famous. But be warned: they are freezing cold, even in the summer—dive in at your own risk. But mostly just relax, as the staff at Travaasa (most who seem to have been there for 20-plus years) cater to your every whim. They’ll fix you a picnic lunch, set you up with snorkeling gear and boogie boards, then transport you to Hamoa Beach, one of the world’s most beautiful tropical spots. Black sand, craggy cliffs and warm, clear water, where a turtle or a brilliantly hued tropical fish is likely to swim past: what more could you ask for? Actually, there is one more thing that will make your Travaasa Hana trip truly unforgettable. They will arrange a bucket-list experience for you, with Skyview Soaring pilot Hans Pieters. He’ll take you up in his motorized glider, first showing you the breathtaking landscape of Hana from the sky (with the Big Island off in the distance one way, and Lanai and Molokai in the other), then silently glide you into the Haleakala Crater, dipping and soaring on air pockets through its otherworldly landscape. Pieters will even land you back at Hana Airport with nary a motor to be heard. If that blissful ride—and the whole trip to Maui’s lesstraveled places—doesn’t make you forget every bit of stress you brought along, then nothing will.

Grand Cayman’s

Cool Culture The Ritz-Carlton, Grand Cayman sets the scene for a luxurious yet laid-back vibe to a relaxing travel experience

SECLUSION The locals refer to the island as “Cayman” and will tell you that it originated from the Spanish term “caiman,” meaning reptile, after Christopher Columbus discovered the Cayman Islands on his voyage to the New World. Whether that holds true or not doesn’t matter so much, but when your driver from the airport starts chatting you up about the island, there’s something reminiscent about hearing those types of tales. Hidden in the western Caribbean Sea, 150 miles south of Cuba and 180 miles northwest of Jamaica, you’ve arrived in paradise. You traveled hundreds of miles to get to here, and the moment you step out of the car, you’ll feel the warm, damp climate against your skin and somehow this signifies your permission to relax. The beachfront resort is a luxurious island hideaway with 365 guest rooms and suites designed with aesthetics redolent of the tropical environment, and a gracious concierge staff on hand well before you pull into the driveway ready to tend to your every need.

HOMEGROWN Part of being on an island this remote is just that—you’re now out-of-the-way from many of the abundances that you’re used to. Welcome to the culinary world of sustainable cooking where most of what you eat really is fresh because it was picked or caught that same day. Coined as the leader of the sea-to-fork movement, no Cayman dining experience would be complete without at least one perfect meal at The Brasserie. The owners and Chef Dean Max’s innovative use of indigenous resources makes every meal unique. Not only do they have their own fishing boats that bring in fresh seafood every day, they also harvest their own vanilla Tahitian beans, sugar cane, and vegetables on site. Request a table near the chef’s garden, and arrive early to ensure your pick of the catch of the day; the experience will authenticate true island living. On those days when you prefer to stay within the comforts of the resort, you’ll find that there are several indulgences to choose from. For breakfast, take a seat on the patio at Seven, home to the islands’ most extravagant brunch. On the menu, there’s something for everyone—but don’t leave the island without trying the French toast with caramelized bananas just once; chances are you’ll be

passing forks around. For a more intimate experience, dine at Blue by Eric Ripert, a celebration of seafood in the grand tradition of Chef Ripert’s top ranking New York restaurant, Le Bernardin. The only thing better than ordering one item: the tasting menu, an assortment of dishes paired with hand-selected wines to enhance the unique flavors of each dish. Every morsel is mouthwatering and meticulously prepared to celebrate the regional produce.

DISCOVERY If you prefer your tropical retreat to come with a white, sandy-beach backdrop complete with crystal clear waters and a near endless variety of marine life, The Ritz-Carlton, Grand Cayman has to be the best place for anonymity, relaxation, and adventure all rolled into one. This is a tropical paradise for wate rsports enthusiasts—from diving and snorkeling to swimming with stingrays, the Caribbean heartland is sure to encourage you to test the waters during your stay. The eco-adventure program, Jean-Michel Cousteau’s Ambassadors of the Environment, will serve as a handy resource for introductions to several island traditions. Not a water junkie? Play nine holes at the Greg Norman-designed golf course, Blue Tip (eight holes are on the water). Later, revel in seclusion on the palm-fringed beaches in one of the private oceanside cabanas and nosh on fresh fruit and piña coladas from Bar Jack—a satisfying salve after a sun-filled day.

RESTORATION Home to the first-ever La Prairie spa, beloved by spa-goers and beauty aficionados for its healing waters and unique cellular antiaging formulas, a trip to Grand Cayman wouldn’t be complete without an indulgent experience at Silver Rain. Known for its unparalleled restorative experiences, don’t miss top services like the Caviar Signature massage and Caviar Lifting Facial with NuFACE technology, which hydrates and nourishes the skin. Silver Rain is an incubator for the perfect remedies that replenish the face and body. The latest endeavor for the luxury Swiss line: Cellular Mineral Exfoliator Collection—the combination of purifying, polishing, and perfecting using mineral exfoliators creates the perfect trifecta for leaving your skin feeling smooth and hydrated. Whatever pleasure-seeking mood you’re in, awaken your senses to this Swiss ingenuity.

in the kitchen with

Katy She’s gutsy, bubbly, fit, speaks Chinese, writing two books, the mother of three, and charmed fans on Food Network Star, season 7. Food and Fitness Coach Katy Clark, 36, is buzzing about Southern California hosting healthy cooking classes and sharing her fitness secrets.

bask: You’re amazingly fit. Advice? Katy Clark: I love to run; it’s healing to me to be in the sun, the air, and have time to think. But not everybody loves running. I help people find out what works for them, what they love, then we do that. b: How much exercise is enough? KC: My easy rule: you have to be sweating, breathing heavy or sore the next day. If you don’t hit one of those three, it’s not a workout. b: Is there hope for those who hate working out? KC: There’s so much from swimming to yoga to rock climbing—there’s almost no excuse to not find something you love to do. But you have to have the guts to try something new. It’s okay to be uncomfortable. b: Can you really love food and be fit? KC: Yes, but you need to retrain your palate. I love a good In-N-Out burger, but I don’t

love how I feel afterwards. And I know I won’t love how I look if I continue to eat them. b: Importance of food versus fitness? KC: Seventy percent of wellness is diet. Some people think ‘I’ll just keep working out and eat whatever,’ but if you don’t change your diet, it’s just sabotage. b: Tell us about your Light and Luscious series.

b: Current food trends? KC: Quinoa, people are starting to see it as the powerhouse it is—more nuts and berries, less dairy and gluten...and realizing how food reacts to your body, instead of just consuming. b: Foods to lose? KC: Diet soda. It’s like the bad boyfriend: does nothing for you. b: Your favorite spice?

KC: I teach classes at the Sub-Zero & Wolf showroom in Costa Mesa. It’s during lunch hours, people get educated and motivated about healthy eating—and enjoy a delicious meal.

KC: Turmeric! It’s full of anti-inflammatories. I love putting a little bit of spice in everything I eat.

b: Your Food Network Star experience?

KC: I’d like to be on ESPN SportsCenter, out on the field, chatting with the players, getting the live scoop of what just went on. That, or a teacher.

KC: I wouldn’t be who I am today if it wasn’t for the show. It catapulted me into becoming the woman I always knew I was. I’m so grateful.

b: If your career wasn’t wellness?

b: What’s ahead? KC: Three words: Fit. Whole. Beautiful.
