The story of ‘La Tropicale’ is steeped in a history as exotic as the site on which the property stands. lt was in 1879 that the firing of one hundred and one cannon shots signaled the arrival of Marie Alexandrovna, empress of Russia, and thus the grand era of the Russians on the Côte d’Azur was born. In 1890 the Prince and Princess Lobanov-Rostouky, close friends of the Romanov family, came to settle on the Côte d’Azur and, inspired by its exquisite natural setting, chose a residence high up on the hillside above Cannes. Villefranche-sur-Mer Villefranche-sur-Mer is a commune in the Alpes-Maritimes department in the Provence-AlpesCôte d’Azur region on the French Riviera. Villefranche-sur-Mer adjoins the city of Nice to the east along Mont Boron, Mont Alban and Mont Vinaigrier, and 10 km (6.2 mi) south west of Monaco.
